My family has been coming here since before I was born...and I'm 40 now! Uncle Charlie's is truly a local staple with consistently great food and so many memories tied to it. I love the stuffed shells and turkey sub (they seriously have the BEST mayo on it). My mom always got the lasagna, my dad loved the steak sandwich with peppers and onions, and my grandfather always ordered the family pizza for everyone. We still love Uncle Charlie's! First time at Uncle Charlie's and it certainly won't be my last. The atmosphere is welcoming, the customer service is impeccable, and the food is exceptional. I ordered the fully loaded cheesesteak with lettuce, tomato, onion, peppers, and mushrooms and it was cooked to perfection on one of the softest rolls I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. We also opted for 5 large pizzas which reminded me of my time living in New Jersey and the high-quality pizzas I enjoyed while there. We also added sides of mozzarella sticks, onion rings , and French fries. The pricing is also very reasonable, we fed over 10 people for less than $120. read more

Always great food! Always fresh they make their own pizza dough. Over the years I have eaten everything on their menu board at least 3 to 5 times. Never been disappointed like anyone else, I have my favorite!!!! I've never in the entire city of Jacksonville found another onion mushroom cheese steak made as great as the ones they make!!! Westside gem! Hands down best pizza and subs I've had in Jax. Comparable to a fave in our hometown called Cousin Vinny's Pizza. I joked with my Husband that they are related and shared recipes but Uncle Charlie's was a surprise hit. We have tried other best pizza places and nothing compares to this homemade dough and price. You get so much more for the dollar here. We ordered the All the way pizza which comprised of the meats and veggies, a sub and 10 pc gold bbq wings. I have missed the flavor of Carolina gold and Uncle Charlie did not dissapoint. Wings were on point, sub was jam packed and pizza.. delish and hearty until the very last bite. Aesthetics is very Old school New York deli which gave the place so much charm. Could be updated but I think its fine just the way it is because the food was good. read more

I just visited Uncle Charlie's and as always I was more than satisfied with my delicious meal. I ordered the lasagna with an extra meatball. My husband and son ordered Uncle Charlie's Special ( the sub ) and both said it was scrumptious. From the first time I tasted their food I told them they have a loyal customer for life. They not only meet our expectations, they exceed them. I don't care what day or time we come in the food is always mouthwatering unlike many other restaurants whose dishes are continuously inconsistent. This place has great pizza and by a real NY/NJ guy. Freshly made cannolis too! Authentic! Wonderful, friendly staff--makes you feel like you've known them forever. Second time I went there, I'd called in to see if they were open first, but found they were closing in 10 minutes-- I said No worries, because I didn't want to be "that guy" who orders when they're about to close. If you are expecting food that will blow your taste buds away... This place ain't it. However if you want some decent food that's priced right then this might be your spot. My in law said he stops here every time they are in town to grab a cheesesteak sub. He raved of other items on the menu. That prompted me to plan dinner here one night so my wife and I ordered entirely too much food. Their menu consisted of subs, pizza and lots of fried stuff. If you are dining in then you order at the counter, wait for your food, eat and then pay. That was sort of new to me. No waiters. The decor was minimal and the building was old. Not a deal breaker. As I mentioned at the beginning the food is decent. The sub was below what is called a Jake's hoagie at Larry's Giant Subs. The pizza had a weird sauce. Reminded me of middle school pizza. The fried mushrooms were alright. The corn nuggets were good although that's hard to mess up when it came from a box which I noticed was sitting on the counter. I did stop by another day for lunch and grabbed a tuna sub. It was okay. My wife introduced my in laws to a place that I go for cheesesteak subs and THAT might be their go to now but they know the owner here so they will keep coming back. So will I. When you have been coming to a hole in the wall restaurant like this for such a long time they know you by name, they ask you if your having your usual order or if you wanna change it up. I've eaten here twice in two weeks and have ordered hot meals. The food was tasty, but both times the food has been cold except for the fried sides. The lobby and especially the high chairs desperately need a thorough deep clean. Needs more attention to keeping a clean lobby in between customers and down times. This review is based on 2 separate take-out orders. Conveniently located just down the street from my house, I wanted to check out Charlie's because I've heard they're a community staple and the reviews are for the most part, positive. They've been in business for 38 years and I highly respect that, especially when they're a family-owned establishment. The following is a recant of my experience. The Look-Around: The decor seems very bleak and uninspired. Everything from the dining area, furniture, and the lackluster paint colors...it just didn't feel homey or inviting. I also noticed some old shabby posters on the back wall (one with a sports schedule from 2012). Yes, I believe it's safe to say that the place could use a little TLC. Grub part 1: On my first visit, since they're primarily a sandwich shop, I went with both a pastrami sub and a steak sub. I wanted my focus to be on the quality of the meat and bread, so I didn't stack either of them with a bunch of extras. Just lettuce, mayo and provolone with the pastrami and peppers, onions, and provolone with the steak. Bread? No problem there, not too thick, and very fresh tasting. The other ingredients, however, left tons to be desired. The veggies had no snap to them...no crispness. The flavor of the pastrami was favored over the steak, though because the latter sadly lacked seasoning and that "manly hearty steak sandwich" appeal. Grub part 2: I wanted to sample their pizza since that was what the majority of the customers on visit #1 were getting for take-out. I ordered a small (10-inch) pizza with hamburger and sausage, because much to my disappointment...bacon wasn't among the topping choices. I had high hopes...at least for the crust because I saw the guy tossing the fresh dough into the air behind the counter. However, that hope quickly dissipated upon my first bite. There was no crunch to this crust at all, even at the ends. The sauce highly resembled something out of a can and the toppings...just lifeless. I was shocked, actually, and as much as I hate wasting food...i didn't bother to finish. Service: THIS I will say. The service here is above and beyond. The guy behind the counter greeted me and welcomed me to stay and order even though I was that one "5 minutes before closing" customer. The lady working the kitchen was nice as well, and very informative about the history of the business, so kudos to the both of you, extra star for that. And So: *shakes head* I hate doing this sometimes, because i am SUCH an advocate for these family-run businesses...especially those that have been here and stood the test of time. But something has to give. I understand, Charlie's, that you're not trying to be a bistro or quaint little cafe, I get it. BUT you have to understand that with time comes adjustments to this and some revamping of that to stay competitive with all the other joints (and now food trucks) that are popping up DAILY. Do away with the bulk containers of dressings (that I noticed in the cooler), sauces, etc., and with fresh ingredients comes a fresh identity. Believe me it WILL pay off and people like me WILL travel out of our way... to come to you. Nuff said. Till next time everybody...See You on Yelp! read more

I ordered the meatball sub for myself and my boy got the stuffed shells which he absolutely loved. To start, I'm not a huge meatball sub fan and rarely ever order it. I thought it was OK. The meatballs really didn't taste homemade to me and that was disappointing. It was pretty difficult to eat as the bread got rather soggy and fell apart. Overall, I think I should have ordered an Italian sub or the anti-pasta salad. I think I would try this place again, but probably just as a lunch spot. Others rave about the pizzas so perhaps next time around. read more

I used to come here with my dad once a week (atleast) when I was little and I haven't been in a long time until we recently met up there to grab a bite to eat while I was back in town visiting. It is exactly how I remember it- from the amazing food to the picture of Larry Bird on the wall, it seems nothing has changed over the years and for that i'm grateful. The staff is always so friendly and the food portions are good for the price.
