    Cheesesteak with onion
    Dorothy Y.

What is a trip to Philly without having a Philly cheesesteak! There's multiple stores in Reading Terminal Market that sell cheesesteak, but I think Uncle Gus' is the most famous. They constantly have staff cooking steak with and without cheese, so ordering is more about waiting for them to assemble it for you. They have a dedicated waiting area three steps away from the ordering counter. It's right next to a door to outside, so I'm not sure why that was a good idea. When ordering, my friend asked for "cheesesteak with everything" to capture any toppings they offer. We saw their menu say we can get it with onions. The cashier got confused, because she started telling us that "a cheesesteak doesn't come with anything". We tried asking what we can get with it then. I forgot everything she said but I remembered mushroom and onions. When we said yes to both, she said how it doesn't usually come with mushrooms. When we said no to both, she said how it's common to add onions to get the full experience. She was finally satisfied when we said we'll take onions. At that point, we don't even know if it's included in the price or charged separately, but we wanted onions. Turns out it was complimentary. Next time, we know to say add onions to avoid confusion. I'm conflicted as to how I feel about the sesame on the bun. I appreciate how abundant the sesame seeds are and how it adds a nice toasty flavor. However, I might like the bread more without the small texture and flavor. Appreciate how much meat they gave per sandwich. It was stuffed which makes it feel worth for the price $16. I can't get a clean cross section of the sandwich due to its size. The cheese adds a nice funk to the sandwich, but it makes it heavier. I don't know if I can finish a whole one. I shared the sandwich with a friend. Half wasn't enough to fill me up but my mouth was tired from chewing partially from the size and partially from the chewy bread. The bread wasn't tough but it definitely had a chew.

First time visiting the market and it was a good time. The sandwich was very good, from the bread to the cheese. The sesame seed bread was awesome to me. Quick service, easy ordering. There are common area seats and it wasn't too hard for us to find Some open.

    A thing of beauty!

Fantastic! Wow! A very simple menu, cheesesteak with or without onions, with Cooper or Whiz, chips and bottled beverages. They crank the food out here! Seeded crusty roll was artisan quality, creating the perfect roll-to-meat-to-cheese ratio! I felt like I had ordered it with extra cheese, there was so much gooey melted Cooper sharp! Excellent! Don't hesitate to get yourself a steak sandwich from here!

When in Philly and you visit the Reading Terminal Market you must stop and visit Uncle Gus's Steaks. Its a step above the famous Gino's and Pat's... in fact, you can skip those places. The cheesesteak is served on freshly baked seeded bread, which is different than other spots. I opted for the cheese, of course, and added fried onions and mushrooms. They get you through the counter fairly quick, and hand you a receipt with your order number. About 5 minutes later my order was up, the anticipation had been killing me! The hardest part of this experience was finding a seat, but luckily we walked all the way to the back of the market and found a stand up table to enjoy this bad boy. Of course, cheesesteaks aren't complete without ketchup and once the final touches were on I tooka bite out of this and I was thoroughly impressed. Extremely flavorful, crunchy bread, not sure you want anything more than that in a sandwich. Real top notch.

Pretty good steak sandwich. Line was long. Sad I couldn't get the bread toasted. Probably one of the better choices in the market.

Solid Philly cheesesteak. A bit of a wait but worth it, get a big sandwich for like $20 bucks.

    Heaven in a bun.

You just cannot go wrong at Uncle Gus'. The cheesesteaks... amazing. The staff will gladly hook you up, make sure you stand in the box while you wait, and then deliver you a flavor bomb worth the wait. The market itself is already great and I can spend hours there, so enjoy one of the best sandwiches, in the best bread, in the best city to get them.

Walked to the park to enjoy my amazing food.

First time visiting Philadelphia! I was in town for business and was told I had to check out Reading Terminal Market--and it definitely did not disappoint. There were so many incredible food options, making it hard to choose. I ended up getting a cheesesteak from Uncle Gus's, and it was hands down one of the best I've had. The market was absolutely packed, and there was a long line for cheesesteaks, but despite the crowd, my order came out surprisingly fast. If you're visiting Philly for the first time, Reading Terminal Market is a must-visit. Great atmosphere, amazing food, and a true Philadelphia experience. Highly recommend!

Simple cheesesteak sandwich on a sesame roll. There's cheese well-mixed into the beef, and you can add toppings as needed. Service was fast!!!

I mean. Delicious. I came for an early dinner for the classic cheesesteak with onions and was not disappointed. Service was very quick and the storefront looked clean and authentic old school Philly. My first Philly cheesesteak did not disappoint!! It was $20, but they loaded it up with so much meat, cheese, and onions that it could definitely be split between two meals or people. Overall: a little pricey but must try if you're in Philly for the first time.

The market is fun and a must stop if in the city. You can't go wrong with any of the spots but Uncle Gus has some delicious cheesesteaks. The employees are friendly despite the demanding crowds. The market is a lot to take in very colorful and crowded but fun

We went to the location in Reading Terminal Market - I'll be honest - I wanted to try one of the other well known cheesesteak places but we just didn't have time. I thought this one was going to be just "ok" because of its location but I was pleasantly surprised. It's huge, flavorful and yes, pricey at nearly 20$ for meat, onions and cheese.

This was so delicious! This was my first Philly cheesesteak ever and it was a great one. The bread is so soft and had the perfect crunch with sesame seeds. The meat itself is juicy and the sauce was so solid. I had such a great experience and would definitely come again if I'm in the area!

Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3 Cost to worth it rating: 3 Opentableable: no reservations Return worthiness: yes! Eve awards best cheesesteak of my life--still thinking about it Highlights: - The bread: a soft long roll with sesame seeds was a delight I didn't see coming. - Meat: was lightly seasoned but kept its pure flavor. Most cheesesteaks have such bland meat so this did it right - Cheese: melty coopers cheese was perfectly mixed in. - Onions: just the right soloing if grilled onions mixed in to complement the meat but not overwhelm it. - Size: monstrous! You can easily share (but you may not want to). - Fairly efficient: even with long lines, put your phone number in the kiosk, can pay with credit card, and wait til you are texted to pick it up. - For the whole family: my cranky teen son said it's the best thing he ate on our 23 day summer East Coast trip (including lots of great dining spots around Philly and NYC). Lowlights: - Waits can be long and brutal in heat. We got lucky with a shorter line. - No seating: just an ordering counter inside so many are eating out on the sidewalk.

3.5 stars. Sorry,…read moreguys, this is another WAY overdue review from my 2015 visit before the name change from TONY LUKE'S. Took a short day trip to Philadelphia on Sunday, June 14, and had to try for the first time an authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. When in Rome, right? My cousin and family took me here, the original location of TONY LUKE'S, a mainstay for cheesesteaks in South Philly. The street-side sandwich shoppe had a a classic, no-frills neighbourhood stand vibe, featuring walk-up windows for counter-service. The dining room was a weather-protected, four-wall area with outdoor picnic tables. Tony Luke's covered a broad array of Old Philly Style Sandwiches from Roast Beef ($7.25 - $10.25) to Roast Pork ($7.00 - $9.00), Chicken Cutlet ($7.25 - $10.25), Rib-eye Steak ($7.75 - $9.75), Chicken Steak ($7.25 - $9.25), Hoagies ($7.25 - $9.00) to Specialty Sandwiches ($6.00 - $8.00). They also offered Side Orders, Fresh Sautéed Vegetables, Breakfast and Beverages. Accustomed to being served Philly cheesesteak sandwiches with provolone, grilled onion and green peppers in California (which I love), I was surprised to learn that the traditional cheesesteak from Philadelphia is composed of only thinly shaved ribeye steak, griddled quickly, chopped, and topped with lots of cheese (Whiz or otherwise) served on a soft, crusty hoagie roll. We ordered a Cheese Steak ($8.75) as well as a Cheese Steak Hoagie ($9.75), both of which were tightly wrapped long rolls in Tony Luke's wax paper. They were OK, neither knocked my socks off, unfortunately. My search for a mind blowing cheesesteak will continue when I return to Philly.

The Original Pat's King of Steaks is located in South Philly, specifically in the Passyunk Square neighborhood. It sits at the intersection of East Passyunk, South 9th, and Wharton. The building has many different signs and lights that will let you know that you are in the correct place. Since this is in the city, parking can be somewhat tricky. There are times I have had to circle around, or get whomever I was with to drop me off and have them come back. However, sometimes I have secured street parking not too far away. This will just depend on the time of day, and really the luck of the draw, if you are able to easily locate parking. This is an outdoor stand, meaning there is no inside to enter. You will order at the counter, and food is packaged to-go. However, there are some tables surrounding the building that you can dine at. They are all under the roof overhang, so you will be somewhat protected from the elements. On this day, it was not terribly busy. I really did not have to wait in any kind of line before being able to place my order. This was around 4:00 on a Saturday in September. First, I took some time to look over the menu posted near the sidewalk. There is also a helpful guide on "how to order a steak," for those that are unfamiliar. When it was my first time here, I actually found the humorous display very helpful. I placed my order for two classic Cheesesteak Wit, made with Cheez Whiz. When ordering, you specify if you want Wit (with onion) or Wit-Out (no onion). Given that I was wanting to try the most authentic sandwich I could, I opted for the onions and the traditional Cheez Whiz. My sandwiches only took a minute or so to be ready. As stated, it was not busy, and they are able to whip up these sandwiches rather quickly. I ended up taking my sandwiches to-go, and having them for meals the next few days. They reheat well, and have good flavor. I like having the onions on it for an added texture. Pricing is not terrible. Pat's is more expensive than Geno's by $2 for the same sandwich. My total was $36 after tax for the two sandwiches, making them $18 each. You definitely are paying for the experience and the novelty that is coming to this famous corner of Philadelphia. But, this price is not out of the ballpark of other places in the area. The sandwich is a decent size, and you can definitely get two meals out of it if you are eating it by yourself. So, all that considering, it is a fair value for what you pay. It seemed like most menu items were $20 or under. FYI, they take both cash and card. The staff are quick and efficient. However, it will not be the most friendly or pleasant experience, especially if you do not know how to order. I am not saying that the experience was poor by any means, but be aware that this is not Disney World and they will not be overly kind to you at the order window. Being from Pittsburgh, I had never had a true Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich until a few years ago when I visited for the first time. Since that trip, I typically make it a point to stop and get a few sandwiches to take back home with me. I enjoy coming to Pat's for the atmosphere, and the true taste of Philadelphia. I recommend giving it a try at least once, just to say you have had it. Plus, the sandwiches are pretty tasty, too. I will definitely be back here on future trips to South Philly.
