Had a really poor experience... I had heard of UJC and happened to be staying on the same block in DTLA, so decided to try it at around 7pm on a Wednesday. Walked in and there was only one other person in the place - other than the girl behind the counter that was more interested in her phone - probably should have taken that as an indicator but... I love wonton noodle soup, so ordered theirs with char siu. My order was taking longer than I thought it should given the fact I was one of two customers and noticed that the 'cook' also seemed quite distracted by his phone - with a pot of heavily steaming liquid on the stove... This turned out to be my wonton noodle soup - served to me still (almost) boiling with overcooked everything and wontons that disintegrated when trying to lift them out of the bowl. Sad. I just left. I should have taken photos but just wanted to leave. read more

I have not been to Uncle John's since my last review. Yesterday I decided to give them another shot. Baby they delivered on the Spicy Pork Chops, Chow Mein, and Egg Rolls. When I tell you everything was delicious, I mean EVERYTHING. I stopped ordering egg rolls in Los Angeles a long time ago, but these egg rolls passed the test for me, crunchy and delicious. They must have went back to the original supplier for the chops, they were so damn good. They were good enough for me to order again today. Today I was craving eggs over easy and some potatoes. I ordered the Spicy Pork Chops, eggs over easy, and potatoes, everything was cooked perfectly. I ordered through GrubHub and the food was still hot and the chops were still crispy. My eggs were cooked perfectly. I do have to mention that when I initially ordered breakfast this morning I forgot to change my delivery address from home to work. GrubHub canceled the order, refunded my money and I reordered. I have not been to the new location, but whenever I order through GrubHub and I have a special request I call and when Jose answers the phone he is so pleasant and accommodating. He actually remembered me, that's a plus. I have only seen pictures of the new location via Google and Yelp and I'm looking forward to dining in because it looks inviting. I saw Uncle John's Cafe on a Facebook video that was looking for the best steaks at different price points. starting at $12.99 with eggs, fried rice and toast, you CANNOT BEAT IT! We also opted for the corned beef hash and eggs. The great thing was that the drinks were FREE! So we got a Thai iced tea and Jasmine Boba. My steak was cooked perfectly and rare just like I wanted it. The fried rice is something straight out of a Chinese steam table restaurant but that's fine with me. Sunny side eggs and white toast made the meal. The corned beef hash was nice and crispy. The shocker was the English muffin which was thick and not like a Thomason's EM. Not gonna lie, the Yelp reviews about the chops lured me here for the first time. Cute little place with a fair amount of seating in a bit of a sketch area of downtown. Super friendly staff and good service. I ordered the chops with fried rice. First, huge plate of chops for sure and nice and crispy cook on all. But man, they were dry. Like they need some sauce dry. Been here a few times. Love their honey chicken wings! And the portion is big. I usually got it with the fried rice. Though I must say the fried rice sometime is good and sometime it just ok. Didn't feel like going through the supermarket crowds or eating my own terrible cooking so I called up Uncle John's Cafe to order some takeout. Can't decide between diner food or Chinese? Why not both? I got the fried catfish with lemon pepper fries (they also have regular or cajun fries). Pretty good diner style fish and chips. Was missing some tartar sauce though. Also got the tofu & veggie chow mein. And my fatty self couldn't say no to a side of egg rolls. Great crunch, so good, bigger than your average egg rolls. They even gave a free Thai iced tea with your entree order. I liked this place, it has a pretty varied menu so there's a lot to try. If you work or are in downtown, this is a great takeout spot. Service was fast and friendly. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. There's street meter parking and a loading space in front to help you get in and out fast. read more

One of my favorite diners in LA. It's the ultimate comfort food being an Asian American growing up US. It really reminds me of when my mom would mix Taiwanese and American home cooking all the time. ^^ Pork chops and eggs with fried rice is one of my favorites here. The pork chops are consistently juicy and crispy and so full of flavor! I'm also a fan of the chasu pork omelettes and chasu grilled cheese. As far as the seafood boil on the dinner menu goes, I'm not a fan. But I'm still leaving 5 stars because the brunch menu items are so good! read more

Visited UJ's today for lunch. Servers was busy, so it took a few mins to place my order. Although the servers are nice, they seem overworked. There should be a designated cashier at all times. Main: 1) Steak & Eggs (2.1/5) - Medium-rare. Yes it's an $18+ steak; hard to complain but boy, were 1/8th of the steak inedible. Hard to chew, like rock hard. Not as tasty as I had hoped for. Maybe charge a bit more for a better quality one?? Not recommended. 2) Iced tea (4.5/5) - Hard to screw up iced tea. Refreshing. I recommend this. 3) Service (4.2/5) - Kind-hearted & attentive from both ladies. But again they was busy with the 5 tables. Ambiance (4.5/5) - Updated interior, with decent chairs and clean tables. Natural light shines through. All in all, I would like to give them another shot by ordering something else next time. Wish this was closer to me, and opened as late night/drunk food!! FYI, it's diner food....if you're expecting anything more than it's useless to come. (Yes diner like Denny's, Carrows, Norms, cafes, etc...). Location: Attached to hotel with red entrance canopy. It's next door to it with a black and white chef icon as it's sign. Corn harsh was also pretty good. They offer egg whites too. Looking forward to try the pork chop or fried chicken wings version next time. Breakfast AND Chinese food? Yes, please. Came here for lunch yesterday and arrived at just the right time. We were able to be seated immediately and there were only three other parties there. We were approached quickly and had our order taken shortly thereafter. Service was quick and friendly - like super fast and genuinely friendly. Steak and eggs were delicious. Asked for medium and got a medium. The meat was tender and had just the right amount of fat. The potatoes were seasoned just right and crispy in the right places. Chashu and chow mein were tasty and even better for lunch the next day. All in all, I will be back, either for the breakfast/lunch or the seafood boil in the PM. read more

This is my downtown LA spot! Looking for a nice, clean spot to get a bite to it and here it is. This place is always busy for a reason, and the staff works hard to get you a seat and get your food to you ASAP. Parking can be an issue here, but that is not their fault. The interior is pretty divey, casual, nothing too impressive. Kind of a come, eat, run, sort of place...not somewhere you'd really hang out and enjoy. You order at the bar and then you sit down. Your food is brought to your table when it's ready. The food was very underwhelming. I barely finished my plate and so did my husband. My friend and I came here because we saw it on Buzzfeed's "worth it" series. Overall, the food was good but nothing special that I'd come back for. We got the two most popular items (pork chop and steak/eggs), and both of us definitely liked the steak and eggs more. I've always been a fan of the Chinese style fried pork chop and this one was decent, but not as good as those I've had at other restaurants. The steak and eggs were delicious, and the fried rice we chose as our side was alright. I kind of wished there was more "stuff" in it like traditional fried rice because it was just rice with green onion on top, and I was hoping there'd be a bit more flavor. I did like that portions were huge for the price though, because we were both extremely stuffed. Also, would've been nice if there were more sauce options besides A1 and sriracha. Service was awesome though. Our server was so nice and friendly, gave us good tips for parking, and played an awesome kpop playlist lol. Even though we came pretty late and were still finishing our food when they were closing, the employees made sure to tell us to take our time and everything. My friend got lucky enough to find street parking 1-2 blocks down, but I couldn't find any within several blocks so I ended up parking in the passenger loading zone right in front of the restaurant and sitting near the door to keep an eye on my car (as recommended by our server). Uncle John's is a nice down home spot for a variety of dishes. It is located on Grand Avenue between 8th & 9th. Keep in mind Grand is one way going south but you should be able to find plenty of street parking if not in front, surely on the side streets. I grabbed the Tuesday special which was a Chinese inspired dish with Egg Foo Young - Outstanding. Food is prepared fresh. Staff is professional and efficient. You can dine in or take-out. read more

The food is delicious. The service is quick and friendly - you can tell they have regulars and it feels amazing to experience the familiarity. The ambiance is what you make it! They have indoor seating and outdoor seating, which I usually opt for because I love sitting outside even if it is just a table on the sidewalk. If you are a friendly but solitary diner like I am, I recommend sitting outside, they make sure to check on you but not too often. The orange chicken is delicious, the fried rice, the pork chops, the honey walnut shrimp, the XO fried rice and the house chow mein are all phenomenal. They also close midday to switch their cuisine over and the seafood boils are legit! No matter which menu you get, you're in for a treat! read more

Great food, chill ambiance, amazing service and reasonably priced! Went to check out this fusion spot for breakfast since it's across the street from the Freehand Hotel. It's very popular and there were lots of regulars (lots of "I don't need the menu, thanks!"--always a good sign!) The servers are so cool, very nice, quick and attentive. We had a nice chat with our server about her cool piercings and she was so sweet and made us feel at home! The steak, eggs and rice are a popular dish, but I got the beef pho which was delicious...and the leftovers were even tasty cold! (Unless it's gazpacho I *never* eat cold soup, but we don't have a microwave in our room and I was not gonna let that tasty pho go to waste!) The iced tea is delicious and not bitter.
