There are so many amazing options for Tex Mex around here that I found Uncle Julio's to be just ok. We tried their pineapple/bacon guacamole and thought it was good. It took me a solid five minutes to even remember what I ordered (flautas) if that gives you any indication on how run of the mill they were. I have been going to Uncle Julio's for years. It is our old reliable for high-quality Mexican food. Only twice in my memory have we had poor service--it is definitely the exception. Usually service is quick, polite, and helpful. A great measure of a Mexican restaurant is the quality of the chips and salsa. Uncle Julio's always delivers. The salsa is served warm and has a delicious, smoky flavor. The chips are perfect. Uncle Julio's has an extensive menu. I highly recommend the beef fajitas, cheese enchiladas, and any tacos. You really can't go wrong. Given the quality of the food, the prices are reasonable. The only fault with Uncle Julio's is its size. The restaurant is large and it is filled with tables. It can feel a bit cramped, especially if you are there during peak hours when the restaurant is packed. Naturally, the noise level is high. It's not hard to find Mexican food of all quality levels in any city in Texas. This joint was on a list circulating at my client's office, so we decided to give it a shot. The ambiance is nice enough--typical terracotta walls and ceramic tiles on the walls, faux Kahloesque art hanging. Coworker and I were seated quickly and served by, it was immediately evident to me, a new server. He wasn't perfectly acquainted with the menu, more on that below, but fortunately Mexican food doesn't need an explanation. We were greeted with thin, crispy tortilla chips and a nice salsa you could taste the smoke in. Easy to ruin your appetite just with that! One feature of their menu is fresh guacamole made tableside. I thought for $11.99 it was a bit pricey, but Coworker wanted some, so we got a bowl. The guac alchemist asks you exactly what you want in it, so no complaining, including no complaining about the heat. We both like a little heat in our guac, so he put in a few jalapeño slices along with tomatoes, garlic, cilantro, and onion. About four avocados went into the mix, the whole thing mashed up, but not perfectly mashed, and served in what looks like a faux pumice Aztec head-shaped vessel. It came out great, the way I like it, with a good garlic flavor, hardly any tartness, and recognizable chunks of avocado. The part where the server's newness was apparent came when I, always on the lookout for low-cal or low-carb entreés, spotted ahi tuna fajitas among the fajita selections (unusual as it is for a Mexican place), and noted that the menu offers you a substitute of Bibb lettuce instead of flour tortillas. What's not to love? So when I placed my order for the tuna fajitas, I believe I said, "and oh, by the way, can I get that as a lettuce wrap instead of tortillas?", server furrowed his brow and said he wasn't sure that could be done, but he would check with the kitchen. I pointed out that the menu offered it, and he said he would still check to be sure. Manager came over a few minutes later, after we placed our orders but before the entreés came out, and I mentioned that Server didn't know about the lettuce option. Manager apologized and said he would make sure the server knew. My objection here is, Server could have just said "oh! I didn't know that!" and admitted he was kinda new. I would have respected that. Show a little humility, please. All was forgiven, though, when the food arrived: seven rather long strips of seasoned, seared ahi tuna, served on a bed of sautéed julienned vegetables, accompanied by four leaves of Bibb lettuce and a sweet-n-sour slaw of some sort to put on top. Once I figured out how I was going to parcel out seven pieces of fish among four lettuce leaves, I was in bliss. Perfectly seared tuna, buttery, tender sautéed vegetables, and a little of that yummy guac to put on top. Delicious! Coworker ordered the cheese enchilada, and as usual made two meals out of it. I suspect the reason she couldn't finish it all, because she said it was delicious, was from spoiling her appetite with all that guac! Now, when I try a new (to me) Mexican place, I always get flan for dessert. Julio's flan is a traditional type, no fancy flavors, no graham cracker crust, just baked custard, burnt sugar syrup, and nothing else. The serving was about five inches in diameter, enough for us both. When there's no adornment, the quality of the flan's taste and texture is center stage; no flaw can hide. This flan was pure in taste, but ever so slightly overdone: not curdled or eggy, but not so smooth it slides on the tongue, either. I'd have given the flan five stars by itself if the texture were closer to crème bruleé. But who an I kidding--I'd get it again! Price for my share of the meal, tax, and tip came to about $30 (we ordered no alcohol), which I consider quite reasonable for the Metroplex. I'm taking off a half-star for the callow server, and another half-star for the noise level in the dining room: there is no carpeting or soft wall coverings, it's all hard surfaces, and even on a Wednesday night the place was near-full, so the joint was LOUD. I had to have people repeat what they were saying to me multiple times. Not conducive to conversation, and for this reason not a great first-date restaurant. Go for the food! read more

The food was incredible we had bacon wrapped shrimp with chicken and steak fajitas also table side guacamole . Too yummy chips and salsa were on point ! I also had a margeirita with corona on top I've never had on like that its basically coronarita delicious. But must say the service was really bad our waiter took forever and luckily we were in good moods we just sat and enjoyed each others company. But seriously why do waiters do that when they depend on tips. And we even left a pretty good tip considering the service . The food was great tho hopefully next time itll be better. "Fine Mexican foods"?????? I think not. This place is what I like to call a "Textbook" place. Food is your typical Tex Mex, and you know exactly how it's going to taste even if you've never eaten here before. I seriously don't see the draw. You have Mia's, Manny's, and Primo's all within 2 miles of this place, yet it's so popular. The times I've been there, the service was less than acceptable and the food was quite literally boring. i've driven by this place dozens of times.. and today i finally went for lunch.. service was good.. the chips were fresh and crunchy.. the salsa was a warm and bit bland though.. i ordered the combo fajitas (beef and chicken).. the beef was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the chicken was quite tender.. the tortillas were warm.. not to thin and not to thick.. just right.. overall.. it's a solid place for tex mex... since it's relatively close.. i'll probably be dropping by this place quite often.. however.. i still love pappasitos tex mex over pretty much over every other tex mex restaurants read more

I like the queso and overall quality of the food. However, it's really expensive for Mexican food; but that seems to be a trend for Mexican food in Dallas. we waited over 30 minutes for a pickup order, they provide no updates and when i called they placed me on hold and never came back. i called back and asked to speak to the manager david, who took 8 minutes to get to my call on hold, and over 10 minutes to follow up after that. this place stinks, i would not even think about eating here or ordering from here again. they are obviously having a difficult time hiring people for low wages, and i suspect that the food will be toxic if and when we ever get it. this is the worst restaurant in dallas, if not texas!!!!! do not order from here ever!!!!! i would give this negative stars if that was possible. the contempt that they have for the people who support them is pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!! they were sitting on the order the whole time!!!! they made us wait a half hour while the order was getting cold!!!!! read more

Very good tex-mex with nice touches. Great top shelf margaritas - just tequila, cointreau and lime, none of that disgusting sweet and sour mix other places use. The grilled frog legs are unique and delicious. The ceviche royal is fresh and perfectly marinated everytime I've had it. I typically have nothing but love for Uncle Julio's, but when my steak fajitas came out well done and I sent it back, only half the portion arrived back at my table and STILL OVERCOOKED! My girlfriend and I jumped across the street from Gloria's yesterday after having a few drinks for a meal at Uncle Julio's. We had a great meal, but the single reason we went over was for their awesome coconut flan. We were sadly disappointed when we were advised by our waiter that they were out already and it wasn't even 7:00pm yet. This is totally unacceptable and whomever is in charge of making sure they have enough on hand should be taken out into the parking lot and beaten about the head, shoulders, and buttocks with either a cookie sheet or spatula by the waitstaff as a lesson to everyone, because their coconut flan is just that good read more

I love coming here! The fajitas and the tortillas are the BOMB. It is expensive, but sooo worht it. The tamales come with a bean salsa that just takes it to another level. I recommend starting off with the guacamole. For sure try the tortillas, they are freshly made in the restaurant, It's mostly always packed, so make sure you call ahead and reserve a table if you dont want to wait.
