Me and a friend came out for dinner and drinks. I've been here a few times and was never impressed with the food. Unfortunately, I'm still not impressed with the food. But I do like their drink called "The Swirl" that's why I ended up agreeing to meet here. My friend made reservations and we were seated immediately on the patio. Nice patio area to enjoy the nice weather and view. We placed our order for drinks and food. Our drinks, chips and salsa arrived. We were so busy drinking and chatting. That we didn't notice that we've been waiting for an hour for our food. We looked around and the two tables that came after us had received their food before us. It was only the two of us and I just ordered the chicken tortilla soup and my friend ordered the chicken taco dinner. We tracked down our server and asked him about our food. He sent the manager over to our table and it was crazy how they forgot to put in our food order. The manager waived out the charges for our food order. The food wasn't even good. My chicken tortilla soup was dry with no sauce or soup in the bowl. If I do decide to come back it would be only for the drinks. read more

I went with three of my friends, two of whom are from Mexico. I have been to the restaurant before and really enjoyed it. The food is excellent. I especially like the fact that there are several fish and vegetarian dishes. I ordered red wine from Spain, which was excellent . I always avoid California wines which are probably the worst, along with those from Australia. The server, as well as the staff at the front desk were very welcoming, friendly and attentive. This is my 2nd time visiting this busy location in Oakbrook. Today I dined w 3 of my coworkers and despite seeing at least 6 empty tables, we were told there was a 15 min wait. Normally that would be ok but being on a lunch break that 15 min wait was too long. So we decided to sit at a table near the bar. Chips and salsa were immediately served nice and hot at our table. Shortly after the bartender asked us for our drink order. And soon after we all put in our orders. I had ordered the 2 enchiladas platter. One with chicken and one steak. When my meal arrived it arrived with only steak. So I had to ask the manager if I can get one chicken because that's what I originally ordered. The manager said no problem he'll get that right away. 10 min later the chicken enchilada arrived and he said because of their mistake they would take care of the entree for me. This was really nice and unexpected. Wow this is excellent customer service. I didn't catch his name but I made sure to thank him and promised him I would write an 5 star review recognizing the excellent service. The food was also delicious. The meal was good. But not like really good. My tacos were homemade but not good because of the meat being extremely salty. I asked for a side of cilantro. And it tasted better. The Rice was tasting like it copied off of chipotle. The salsa tasted salty. Not enough garlic or onion flavor to it. At least in my 3 carnitas taco plate.. 2-3 little balls of dry meat each taco (seriously one taco had 2 pieces the size of quarters). Our margaritas were delicious (strawberry & grapefruit) And the chips n salsa was pretty flavorful.. But long story short, I was not happy with how lack luster the food was overall.. Be prepared to spend AT LEAST 30 bucks a person on just food. Id go back in a heart beat to try more drinks and get that piñata again. Pretty upsetting when you order food 3 hours in advance and not even get your order. I called the restaurant several times and no one picked up. I understand with the Covid pandemic going on that we need to be patient, but I also think communication, such as posting it in a social media platform, would help. I left after waiting for 2 hours for a 5pm order. Also, there were people getting out of their cars, not practicing social distancing, and complaining about their orders as well. Didn't receive non alcoholic lemonade until meal came. Silverware was super dirty. Meal came and chicken was slightly undercooked then I noticed steak in my fajitas had green and red spots on it as if it were either old or just simply not fresh. Complete turn off. Went for a special occasion during the week. While it was obviously a special occasion, they never asked if we were celebrating anything. Okay, fine. The restaurant was not full at all but it took a long time to take our drink order and a long time for the drinks to come out. Finally ordered our food, which ended up being good, however the substitution I ordered was not made. Okay, fine. The bill came and a member of our party paid it but as we were finishing up and dividing up the tab we discovered that TWO extra meals had been added to our bill. We flagged down the waiter who took it to be corrected. They credited us the amount of the two meals but the tip was based on the incorrect bill amount. They should have refunded the whole thing and started over. The worst part of the experience occurred when we were headed out of the restaurant. One of the servers or bussers walked right in front of me and I couldn't get by to exit. He refused to move and said he was headed to the kitchen. I told him I was trying to leave. Instead of stepping aside for the customer, a lady for heaven's sake, he blew right past me and left me standing there shocked that a service employee would be so rude. I am honestly surprised with how happy I was with my meal. I am gluten free and was worried when I saw their meat is marinated and seasoned with gluten. However, I decided to go ahead and order the carne asada anyway and let me tell you...THIS MEAT IS SEASONED. It was hands down one of the best strip/flank steaks I have ever had. The waitress served it with corn tortillas and recommended I try the Mexican butter to dip them into. The Mexican butter was delicious, it had a little heat and lots of garlic. It's amazing how on a Sunday at 1:45PM there's a 45 minute wait and the restaurant and parking lot is empty. You might as well just stick to takeout because you can't staff your business. On top of that the so called hostesses at this location are always rude and have zero personality. They're lucky they have good fajitas but not good enough to wait 45 minutes just to get a table. I just don't understand how you think your business can survive in this environment without having decent staff who can be polite at the very least. Our server was nice but she was clearly only one of maybe two servers on staff. On top of that with the restaurant being empty they literally sat us in the middle of four other tables sitting on top of each other. The entire time we were there we never saw the manager take his hands out of his pockets he just stood there watching everyone work. I've never seen anything like this. When the restaurant is empty you can socially distance the tables but not in this place. When the manager sees your table needs to bussed or you need more drinks he could take his hands out of his pockets and do some work. What a joke. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had at this location. We even made the mistake of ordering food for takeout which was improperly prepared. The steak we ordered was rare for some pieces and well done for others when ordered medium rare. Good luck staying in business with service like this. I was very disappointed that twice I have tried to eat on the patio and was told it was closed! The young girl acting as hostess was very rude and dismissive. Finally, had to ask the manager to be seated on the patio and then was very sad to see the quality of the food has really changed. Under the new ownership, just not the same quality as before. With its over-the-top decor, you might think you're stepping into a stereotypical Mexican restaurant with the same old same old for food, but I was surprised! I started with the fresh fruit strawberry margarita. Everyone told me to get a Swirl, which is a frozen margarita blended with a swirl of sangria. I bucked the trend but I don't think you could go wrong in the drinks section. I ended up having two of the fresh strawberry and I was very pleased with my decision. For food, I had the queso with chips and I cannot express enough how delicious the fresh chips are...I ate an entire bowl by myself. Addicting. Also helped with my margarita intake. For dinner, I tried the waiter's recommendation - fresh housemade tamales! Just fantastic. I will visit again when I'm in town! read more

This used to be my favorite place. However everything has just gone downhill. This review is about my carryout. I picked the order up myself and ordered online. They charge almost $11 for a large order of queso. That's expensive. I attached the photo of what I got. When I asked the girl why it wasn't full she said "well that's how it's done and we don't have the right containers." I ordered a cup of soup for $5.99. The cup was smaller than my free salsa. Our waiter was great , came to take our drink orders right away and gave us menus . You know how it is when you get a group of girls together? While I still love their food, especially the chips and salsa, the service has gone down considerably over the last two years. A wait staff that takes forever to take your order and an underage or perhaps immature host station with inexperienced hostesses seating you. It's sad to see this place be so complacent about taking care of the customer. We were elated when we found out they opened one in Lombard but now we probably won't bother coming here anymore. Went in for apps and dessert. Our primary purpose was to try the famous chocolate piñata. Their complimentary chips and salsa are actually very tasty, a dip rich flavorful salsa. I ordered a cup of the queso with beef for my appetizer. While it was delicious, the mixture was too thick to scoop with the chips provided, they kept breaking off. Eventually I put a whole bunch of chips in the queso and ate everything with my fork. The chocolate piñata dessert was a lot of fun. It came out on a large tray with caramel, raspberry, chocolate sauces, and whipped cream. The piñata is a chocolate sphere filled with fresh strawberries, pineapple, blackberries, and churros. It hangs on a hook like a real piñata. You are given a thick wooden stick to actually break the piñata. It's a fun dessert, very simple pieces presented creatively. Service was ok. We had to flag down the server for refills. My sister's soup arrived cold, and took a bit to replace. The veggie tamales were also very average. read more

I visited Uncle Julio's with my family, for lunch. * Our waitress was very accommodating, when we told her we don't eat meat, and even substituted the beef/meat with shrimp for the dishes we ordered. * Unfortunately, we did find random pieces of meat in most of the dishes we ordered. * What was strange was that there wasn't meat in the meal itself, it looked as if the meat just "fell on" to the plate. * We alerted the waitress and she quickly took the dishes back and offered to remake the dishes. The manager made sure to exclude those from the check. SUMMARY Overall, our experience at Uncle Julio's was pleasant and yes, I would go again. I was so shocked to see all of the low star ratings for this place. Bewildered, I skimmed through the reviews to find they were mostly for slow seating. I have a solution for you guys...sit at the bar! We had excellent service there. Perhaps it's because I was dining with a "regular" who tips very well, I'm not sure. Our service absolutely top notch, our food and drinks were very tasty and served in a timely manor. We grabbed a seat at the bar immediately on a very busy Friday night. We wanted to watch the Bulls game and that was the perfect place to do so. House made chips and salsa were placed in front of us within seconds. My only complaint would be the chips were very thin, breaking into the salsa pretty easily. The fix is just to use smaller pieces. I started with skinny guava margs on the rocks with salt. Just the right amount of sweet especially for them being "skinny" and just the right amount of tequila. Refilled immediately as were waters with lemon. Delish, but were a tad pricey. $10 a pop. Apps were the three pepper guac which had big chunks of different peppers. Very, very good, but VERY spicy! Our party also ordered habanero honey bacon wrapped shrimp. They were huge and came 4 to an order. I personally ordered the veggie fajitas eaten sans tortilla since I was carb-loading on chips already. I will say they fresh press their tortillas, on display for all to see too, which I LOVE! They veggies were excellent! Possibly the best veggie fajitas I've had. An entire juicy, perfectly seasoned meaty portobello with other veggies mixed in. All fajita orders are served with another entire plate with fresh pico, guac, sour cream, lettuce and cheese and a side of black bean and tasty lime cilantro rice. The others in my party ordered the Guadalajara Fajitas which were wrapped jumbo shrimp stuffed with Monterey Jack and jalapeño with Chicken, Beef or Combination. This is their go-to dish here. They love it. It was certainly packed on a snowy Friday night. The place is rather large, but many were still waiting for tables so bar it or bring patience. Loved the decor! I loved the classic Mexican tiles and pops of turquoise. The vintage bullfighting posters brought me back to Spain which of course I appreciated. Cool vibes. Tv's at the bar area for game watching. I have been eating at this location for the last 10 years and get the same thing each time which is the Jalisco platter. It has beef, chicken and shrimp fajitas. Unfortunately on my last few visits, I noticed they have gone up on the price AND reduced the portion size of the beef and chicken fajitas which is a double whammy. They have also even reduced the size of their flour tortillas. Now I fully understand the price increase during these unprecedented times but when you also reduce the portion size that's where I draw the line. I would not go to this location. The service was awful. The waiter never came and checked on us after our food arrived. They forgot to bring out 2 of the entrees tortillas. Had to actually waived down our server to get some service and tortillas. Meanwhile the rest of us had to start eating because the food was getting cold. Our waters were never refilled. Our server sat down with other customers to chat 3 tables from us and still....we waited for service. As we left the restaurant and passed the hostess stand. The manager and 3 other servers/hosts were standing there chatting. Not one of them said "thanks foe coming" or "have a food night" worst customer service ever!
