Went with my good friend and ordered the chicken lettuce wrap, mongolian beef and barbecue ribs. Dishes were delicious. The best part is our server Fermin, he was the best . We went out to Lombard and stopped at Uncle Julio's - one of our favorites. The hostess was welcoming and sat us within a few minutes. Stacey, our server, was quick to the table with a friendly welcome. I opted for a perfect Patron margarita - one of our favorites and we started with our standard guacamole - delicious as usual. Where I became disappointed was when I received my crispy tacos. I hadn't ordered them before and failed to ask how they were prepared but I certainly wasn't expecting Taco Bell or Old El Paso crispy shells. I'm at a Mexican restaurant so certainly thought the crispy tacos were going to be a soft fried tortilla. My wife and I had went to this Uncle Julio's a month ago and thought it was great so we figured we'd try it out again a couple weeks later. When we went back to eat it was a terrible experience. There were only a couple tables that were seated so it wasn't busy at all besides 1 party of 6 people. After they sat us we ended up waiting 30 min until I had to ask who our server even was and if we can get water and chips. Our server finally came and apologized. After he greeted us we then waited another 20 min to order. His only tables were us and the party of 6 which by this time they were already gone so we were confused on what was taking so long every time. After we finally received our food my wife's crispy chicken tacos were wrong so she sent it back. When the "corrected" tacos came back it looked even worse. Looked like Taco Bell tacos and nothing on the taco besides the chicken was correct. We tried being nice the entire time but then we received the check there was nothing that was comped and they tried charging for an extra margarita so after this experience we're definitely not going back. This is our first visit here. Place looks pretty nice. Love their chips and dip and guacamole . My mom had steak fajitas and i had fish tacos. My mom didn't really like her steak due to it was so salty and I agree with her. The steak was pretty tender just salty. My fish taco was buried under all that veggies and fish was pretty small. I wish they'd given me lime and sauce cause the flavor is not really there. So, i only ate one taco and my mom only ate almost half of her steak and we swap so we can try each other's food. She said fish taco is okay too not the best. The best part about this place is the piñata. My mom had a great time smashing it open . Dear Uncle Julio, I have not seen you in several years so thought I'd stop by for dinner. I see the crowds are still coming as we had to wait 20 minutes past our reservation. I'm so perplexed. The chicken fajitas are just not the same. I was anticipating the sizzling plates of visits past that brought back fond memories of Southern Cal. Instead, bland, no sizzle, just luke warm. Plus, butter melted on top of my chicken. What's up with that? Service seemed harried. And tables took longer to be bused than the good ole days. Uncle Julio's - Bathroom gets as much attention as the food - Mexican Near Me - Lombard, Illinois

My folks and I originally planned on going to late lunch/early dinner at Lombard's Adobo Grill...only to find it CLOSED, as in closed down. Thus spurned, we went looking for an alternative, and found it in Uncle Julio's, a place we used to go sometimes in Dallas (there are many sprinkled about the country, but they're not as ubiquitous as many chains). The decor/ambiance is hot colors, old-style portraits, and a plethora of bull heads and horns. Music blared loudly, and again this is one of those places with the stained concrete floors etc., so there's nothing to absorb sound. The hostess wisely steered us past many tables with small children to a big cushy booth in the corner (though we could still hear a yapping older [i.e. old enough to know better] child in the front corner for most of our meal, even over the vibrant music. Geez.) Our server, Gregory, did a great job, staying on top of things admirably and had great rapport as well. I started with a Chambord margarita: frozen margarita with the black raspberry liqueur added. Not as sweet as flavored margaritas usually are, it also still packed a boozy punch. We also got a bowl of queso, which for whatever reason is the hardest thing for Mexican places to get right around here! (I iterate: queso fundido is wrong! Why mess with a bowl of melted cheese by putting ground meat in it?) This was lovely cheesy goodness with some onions and peppers, a bit thin but that gave it a good flowability, and it came with excellent, thin, crispy, warm chips (which we'd already been eating with the thin, smoky chipotle-laced salsa). It was definitely a queso score. For entrees, my parents both got enchilada combinations, and I mixed it up with something a little unusual, since Uncle Julio's has some rather unique items on its menu, especially for a chain. I ordered the Paloma, which was mesquite grilled quail plus beef and chicken fajitas. I'd never had quail and wanted to see what I thought, but to be on the safe side (i.e. in case I hated it) I got the combo with an old standby option, the fajitas, as well. The quail was interesting. They're small birds of course, so not incredibly meaty, but the meat had a rich taste that married to the mesquite grilling; unfortunately, some of this was drowned out by the smothering of the chipotle BBQ sauce (the taste of which i can only describe as "bottled"). Still, it could have been a lot less successful dish. The fajitas were perhaps the best fajitas I've had ever, and bear in mind I lived in TX for 20 years so I have eaten a LOT of fajitas. The tortillas were so fresh it seemed impossible: puffy, soft, with that heavenly yeasty aroma of a new baked good. Into them went grilled onions and slices of tender, still-juicy steak and chicken. The only thing was that among all the accoutrements they bring to you (pico, guacamole, rice and beans, etc.): no sour cream. Aside from that, absolutely perfect. We were too full for dessert, though sopapillas might have called unto me on another day. Overall, the best Tex-Mex meal I've had in a while. Tio Julio, you're my favorite uncle! read more

I love dining here - it's as simple as that. The chips and salsa are the best I have ever had. The chips are always hot and fresh, and the salsa is more liquified, rather than chunky. For me, I think it's a lot easier dipping in a liquified salsa, but that's my personal preference. The salsa has just a little spice to it, otherwise, it is not too hot. Plus, the guacamole and queso are excellent! I usually order two things when I dine here - fajitas or tacos (although I have tried the majority of the menu). I never have had a problem with the food here - always comes out pretty fast, and is always very tasty. Plus, the portions are large enough where you can have leftovers! Desserts and drinks are also great. For drinks, I recommend the fresh fruit margarita of the day - and if they have raspberry, order it! For desserts for a small party, I recommend the sopapillas or the cajeta. However for large parties, the chocolate piñata is a must - it's filled with fresh fruit and mini churros with various sauces to complement. The only bad thing I have to say is once in a while, you will get a bad server, although lately I have had better service. There is one waiter in particular, as well as one bartender which I always ask to wait on me if they are working just because of the level of attention which they give. Also during peak times, the hostesses are very unreliable in answering the phone in my experience, as calling other locations stems from them answering almost immediately. After finally being seated- we waited 10 minutes without a single worker even looking at us as they walked by and served adjacent tables. Finally a worker walked by and asked, "Has anybody come by to take a drink order yet?" We said, "nope! Not a single person has even said hello". Another 5 minutes rolls by, and we saw the one server go to the host and say we had not been touched yet. A blond 16 year old host looked at us, then went back to work. Still nobody came. At that point my blood was boiling. So I hopped on OpenTable and made a reservation for WeberGrill (next door). We walked out. And the blond host says, "oh- thank you for coming!" Totally clueless that we'd been ignored. I told her we had waited close to 20 minutes without being so much as looked at. And that we were headed to another restaurant. "Oh- gee... Everything was on salty side, the rice was not very good nor the beans (refried would have been better). Wife had a tummy ache after the steak taco. Won't be back. read more

I'm only giving two stars due to good service from our waitress. All other aspects of this place would be zero stars. First of all, we had a reservation and still had to wait about 25 minutes. When the hostess brought us to our table, the table and the booth's seats were very dirty. I asked if she could please wipe it down and she seemed very inconvenienced by this. The food was very underwhelming. I would not even call this Tex-Mex food. Very basic and flavorless. And the whole time we sat there, there was toilet paper all over the floor... Tuesday evening. It's nine o'clock. We are huuuuungry! Uncle Julio's was the nearest restaurant on foot and I quickly learned that it is a favorite of my cousin's. There was ice all around the restaurant, so it would have been nice if they had salted a bit. I know that it's late in the season, but I still don't want to fall. The immediate good news? The hostess was lovely even though we were walking in just an hour before the restaurant was scheduled to close. We took a seat at a booth in the back and had great service for the next hour! It was my first time and I was immediately unsure of what I wanted because everything sounded so good. That's good and bad. Thankfully, they had a combo plate and before long we both decided on the same combo with a few variations. The food arrived before we could hardly get into our conversation. Hmmmm. This made me nervous. Here's my take... They cook the food in advance and plate/heat when it's ordered. The food was all fine. Nothing exciting and nothing awful. The sauces were fairly tasty and that's probably what keeps them afloat at three stars for me. The food is overpriced for not being cooked from scratch at the time the order is placed. HUGE FAIL! There was a time when Uncle Julio's was a favorite of mine for Mexican cuisine, or at least the Americanized attempt. However, that time is long gone - either the quality of their food has diminished and/or my pallet has matured. Either way, my most recent visit was indeed a decision I regret as the meal didnt merit my visit and surely not the bill. Firstly, the nachos. I have no idea who in management believed it to be a good idea to go with nachos so thin a brisk wind would result in them breaking into crumbs. Couple that with the ever so watery salsa and you have an utter disrespect of the most basic pairing. I'd highly recommend a decision-maker of this restaurant take a short ride west, destination Burritos on Highland and Butterfield RD. There they will find a clue as to what nachos and salsa should be. Beyond the disappointing snack, I had misplaced confidence in the entree, daring to order steak and chicken enchiladas. While the chicken enchilada was eatable, the steak enchilada left much to be desired. For the life of me, I couldnt figure out why the steak--apparently prepared medium to medium well--so effectively mirrored that of eating dry rubber. Frankly, the only thing I found enjoyable during my most recent visit, dated 09/14/2018, was their strawberry martini. The martini and the server are the only reasons I could rationalize rendering a 2-star rating. Otherwise, this restaurant's disappointing attempt at Mexican cuisine would yield a null value. I would highly recommend bypassing this place, heading west to Burritos, or if in the mood to drive s bit farther, head up to Salsa 17 (i believe that's the name) for a much more rewarding experience. Uncle Julio's opened this location not too long ago and after having visited the North Ave location I knew exactly what to expect from its suburban sister! Go for their signature Swirl drink- a delicious blend of frozen sangria and frozen margarita. A summertime favorite! Their chips and salsa are also great. As for everything else? Great fluffy tortillas! A bit pricey but definitely worth it. The salsa is really good but REALLY spicy! I love their paper thin tortilla chips, almost filled up on the chips alone. I had the fajita combo that included FROG LEGS. They were really delicious, a lot different than the kind of frog legs you get at a chinese buffet (which I love). The frog legs were grilled and you could really taste the char, but they were flavorful and made me wish they weren't just one pair. The steak and chicken that came with the fajitas was incredibly tender, juciy and delicious too. My date had the bacon wrapped shrimp and I had a bite. They were DELICIOUS. I had the swirl margarita, and if you like frozen margaritas, I'm sure you'll like it. I saw so many reviews I just had to try it, but I'm really not a tequila girl and DANG, it's strong! This was my first experience with Uncle Julio's. I found one near me so it definitely will not be my last! I was in town for work. My coworker ordered guac, which was good. It came with chips. I ordered a drink. Can't tell you what it was; it was pretty so I ordered it.....boy was it strong! I got nothing done the rest of the night. For dinner, i ordered the guadalajara. Yum!!!! It was 3 different meats with fixings to make a fajita. It was absolutely delicious! I was so stuffed when i left there and i could not finish it. Two people could have shared that dish. If I'm paying a pretty penny for my lunch I expect it to be amazing and delicious. The food is good, not like I was disappointed, but I just expected a little more. Show up with 6 senior citizens to be told they can't seat us. Now, I'll preface this with I was wrong and made a bad decision to think they'd sit a group that large. Was hoping we could work something out only to be told that we can leave if we want. No alternative. Just leave if you want. In a Covid-19 environment you'd assume they'd want patrons. We were going to En Fuego but was told this had a better vibe so we decided to try it. Its nice inside, very clean and outside as we chose to sit outside. I am giving it 4 stars because of the wonderful service we had, but other than their housemade chips I just didnt like my food. Its nothing against them, I just hate oregano and had never even heard of mexican oregano but I hated it too. It wasnt in my chicken enchilada but it was in the beef so I didnt eat them. I loved their chips, buy not the salsa or the cheese queso dip which just tasted like melted velveeta. Hubby loved his steak tacos and it was fun to have the guy make guacamole tableside even though I dont eat it. I've been coming to Uncle Julio's for a very long time and it's honestly one of my favorite "chain" Mexican restaurants. People were waiting and standing in the bar area, outside in the entrance area, and outside, but honestly that is not too surprising. It's a popular place and always have been. They told us the wait time would be 45-50 minutes and gave us one of those buzzers. We waited honestly the full 45 minutes and were seated. ****Tip**** The crowd died down around 9:15/9:30pm and there was no longer a wait time. You walked in and immediately was seated. I ordered what I typically always get and specifically come here for, the fish tacos and a swirl margarita. This drink I swear used to have me feeling some type of way after one. My memories of the swirl was a very tasteful/potent drink. Now, it's $9 of frozen water and color mix. The drink was so bland and weak I was tempted to send it back but didn't because since they pre-make them I figured the next one would of been just the same. It was the weakest drink from there I've ever had out of all my years going. The fish tacos were Ok but were lacking that taste factor I am used to. The flavor was just not there this time. The tilapia fish pieces were dry and warm, not hot. I still love the salsa and chips. They still doing that right! I don't know maybe I caught them on an off night and will probably give them another chance eventually just to see if my feelings change, but right now I'm just not feeling Uncle Julio's like I used to. read more

I also really like the food, even if it is a few dollars more than at a typical Mexican restaurant. What a surprise I got when I went to take my second bite into my taco I bit something hard, I admittedly checked my food and what did I find a damm nail/tack not a small one but a medium one . Ol boy wasn't I pissed. We took it back and they refunded the whole bill money back. They did try to offer us more food and gave us a ticket to come back for a free dinner for two on them. Restaurant Review I was running errands in Lombard and decided to go eat out and my wife recommended Uncle Julio since their business had their food catered by them. I was expecting good solid tex-mex food like chevy's. We went at lunch time and it was easy to get seats. There is a weird odor emitting from the restaurant that I can't explain but it was not pleasant. The menu itself for lunch was rather limited and had fajitas and different tacos. My wife ended up choosing fish tacos which were grilled. I tried the steak fajitas and they came sizzling on a hot plate. The steaks are 21 day aged which were taste, but not the best. It is crazy that they charge another 1.99 for cheese and sour cream. The dish itself came with 4 fresh tortilla, gauac, picco de gallo, spanish rice, and beans. The price for this was 13.99 which is comparable to Chevy, however I feel like you get more food. One plus is free chips and salsa with the meal. The salsa is watery, but not too spicy. Also I agree service is so so. I don't understand why people that get water don't get straws and when you buy a drink you get a straw in your cup. I went to this restaurant after my graduation today. The host was very nice and accommodating to all of my questions. We were seated quickly (would have been a long wait for a party of 4+). Our waiter, Horace (I hope I spelled that right) was so nice and patient and overall a very pleasant person! He checked in on us to make sure we were satisfied with our meals (which were delicious!) The manager also came around to check on us which was assuring. Overall, I was happy with my visit to Uncle Julio's in Lombard. I really don't have any reason to complain! read more

I went there recently after not going to an Uncle Julio's for a while. I used to frequent the one on North ave in Chicago. Food portions are definitely smaller now. Fairly similar tasting. Biggest complaint is that there's no longer any tangible amount of alcohol in the Swirls. I had 3 Swirls and didn't even feel buzzed. I went home in an Uber because when I've had three before that was a requirement. For fun, when I got home, I blew into my newly calibrated police grade fuel cell Breathalyzer. I was only .039!!!! They are a totally ripping people off! I probably had more buzz from the sugar I consumed. I'm sure the managements response here will be "get the melt- down" which is an added shot on top. The food here is good, but unfortunately they always seem to have service issues. It is always SO SLOW here. Yesterday it took us 45 minutes from ordering before we got any food. It is always something here. One time ordering drinks from the bar right after we sit down we are eventually told the bar is backed up and we probably won't get them until our food is here. That turned out to be accurate. One time we waited over 30 minutes for dessert after ordering. We were there with a large party and they did a good job of taking care of us. The decor was interesting and the big bull head mounted on the wall near our table was distracting. The menu was basic except for the frog legs. I have not seen those on any Mexican menus before. I thought my mojito was a little too sweet and sugary. The food was pretty good. Watch out for the spice levels though. The guac almost took the roof of my mouth off. BTW, they need sturdier chips. Extremely bland tasting food. Reminds me of Applebee's and Chilis, where you can't quite tell if they just microwaved the food. I may be a bit of a Mexican snob, as tex-mex doesn't quite do it for me. True mexican food is fantastic, even Chiptole has it right. But there is something wrong here that will keep me from returning. read more

This is a place I don't always think of when I am deciding where to go eat, but every time I go, I leave satisfied and my Tex-Mex craving is satisfied (for a day or two anyway!). I also go in thinking I'll try something different, but I always end up eating fajitas, which is their trademark. The set up of the place is good-plenty of fairly open tables and some booths. The service is decent and the place is clean, so good marks on those counts. I highly recommend the steak and Parilla (moderately spicy small shrimp) fajita combo. Good sizzling meat (cooked to order) with basic fixings like pico, guacamole, grilled onions and a grilled jalapeno. Cheese and sour cream are extra, which is odd. The rice is very good and they've changed their beans to more of a standard refried variety-they used to be soup-like in a cup. Kids meals were decent sized and looked appetizing and were enjoyed. I almost forgot, the buttery, foamy, garlic sauce that comes on the side with their shrimp dishes (fajitas as well) is out-of this-world! Freshly made flour tortillas are plentiful-wish they'd make some corn ones as well! Overall, a good place in a very good restaurant area. read more
