A friend took me here for coffee one Saturday morning and it was very busy (which is always a good sign). The parking wasn't great but, you can manage. Now the coffee.. I love lattes so this was such a treat because they have so many to choose from! I played it safe and got a large dirty chai and it was SO good. They do have food. Gotta give this place some kudos. I walked in behind a group of ~10 people, and I received my order within a very short wait. The baristas are fast, friendly, and importantly pretty decent at latte art, which I've noticed has gone downhill at other coffee shops. Definitely would not expect such fine-tuned service from a place this new. The menu is a tiny bit overwhelming, with an excellent selection of both hot and cold drinks, and sandwiches served all day. I had a cardamom latte and treated myself to an almond croissant that was too pretty not to eat. I noticed several customers going for the premade refrigerated single-serve cakes, which also looked delicious. There's a generous amount of seating both indoors and out, as well as plenty of parking. I've seen some reviews complaining about parking and have to wonder if the reviewers have ever visited either any Starbucks anywhere or any urban indie coffee shop. Like, come on. I look forward to making Underdog a regular stop for a sweet/caffeinated treat, and will probably buy some of their adorable merch at some point too. read more

Who knew Annandale, VA is now suddenly a destination for coffee aficionados? I remember a time not so long ago when pastry and bakery shops such as Tous Le Jours, Shilla, and Breeze where the only places to get a "decent" cup of java. But within the past few years, establishments such as Cafe V (https://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-v-annandale?osq=Cafe+V) and Drip CA PHE (https://www.yelp.com/biz/drip-c%C3%A0-ph%C3%AA-annandale?osq=drip+caphe ) have given the 22003 some serious cred for folks looking to satisfy their caffeine fix. Been hearing lots of buzz about Underdog Coffee and Bread, so decided to meet up with my sister to check it out. Located off busy Columbia Pike, Underdog has a large sign advertising "Coffee and Bread" to passing motorists. The parking lot is deceptively small...not large...small. I appreciate that the parking area is wide enough to manuever, but there actually aren't many spaces. This "deceptively" large illusion extends to the interior of Underdog. It cannot be denied, that the decor is very inviting and welcoming. Large windows illuminate the space, where white is predominate color scheme. Cafe colored tile flooring, matches well with the white marble table tops and subway style tile backsplashes...along with the blond wood tables. The high ceilings and IG worthy space, detracts folks from the fact there isn't actually much seating. There are round and longer rectangular tables along the windows. And odd design choice was the long bar in the middle of the room - which I suppose serves a dual purpose to guide people in the ordering line; and for folks to stand and sip their coffee as is the trend in European coffee houses. There is also a merchandise wall with Underdog themed T-shirts, cups, and bags of coffee. Given the mini-statues and prints of the breed of dog, I can only assume the owners are fond of dachshunds. After a few minutes of waiting, we were able to snag a coveted table. My sister's pistachio latte had a nice frothy milk top, and was topped with ground pistachio nuts which gave a nutty slightly salty crunch. The beverage was also slightly sweet with a nice strong coffee flavor. My "regular" latte was by comparison, predictable but fine. The requisite foam leaf art dissolved upon stirring in a few packs of turbinado sugar to reveal a flavorful mixture of espresso and steamed milk. We didn't order any food from the limited sandwich menu or any pastries from the display case, but did observe several tables munching away on these items. Underdog is a welcome addition to the burgeoning coffee scene in Annandale. But more importantly, it is yet another place for people to just "hang out." With more folks opting to reduce their alcohol consumption, people still need places to gather and socialize. During our hour stay, Underdog was always busy with people popping in their to-go coffee and others chatting away. In the warmer months, might we see a few outdoor tables? read more

Nice to see a cafe open up in Annandale! It's spacious so definitely a good place to work or hang out. The staff is friendly and attentive. I got to try Banalatte (iced only), Iced Peanut Cream Latte, Blueberry Latte (iced only), and Strawberry Lemonade. My favorite is definitely the blueberry latte (no espresso) since it was a homemade syrup with fresh blueberry bits. The lemonade was good, but a bit too sweet so had to wait for the ice to water down. Both the Banalatte and Peanut Cream Latte lacked flavor so I asked for them to put more syrup. I enjoyed the Banalatte, but the Peanut Cream Latte was more just peanut flavor and not sweet so it wasn't my favorite. We tried the Homemade Jam & Cottage Open Toast, and it was not bad! They put blueberry, strawberry, and mango. My favorite was mango and strawberry. I have a feeling these jams are the syrups that they put in their lattes! read more

Flavoring, size portion, taste, and price all need to be improved. The banana bread was hard and not moist and detected zero banana. It was tiny for the $6 price tag. The pistachio cream cold brew had only pistachio shavings- tasted zero nut flavoring otherwise. When they asked if I wanted sweetened- they said with vanilla- and I said no thinking that was on top of the pistachio. So it was literally cold brew cream with pistachio toppings on top. No actual flavoring. Not happy. Both of these cost $13! read more

The cafe is super cute & ideal environment for working at a cafe. Instagram worthy and if you get there early enough, the crogel sandwich probably hits just right... unfortunately, we did not though. Drinks wise we enjoyed the hot pistachio latte the most. My salt drink was good too but probably could've been a little more balanced. My favorite was the pumpkin bread and the (not pictured) earl grey tea cookie. My sandwich was OK, a little saucier than I would've liked but at least it wasn't plain. A lil pricey for what it's worth right now but hopeful that it'll get better over time since there's lots of potential. Overall, pretty OK. read more

To be honest, I originally wanted to rate this cafe 3 stars because their parking situation and the fact that they charge 75 cents for ICE pissed me off so bad but my banana latte (comes as only iced so no upcharge!) and the earl grey cake were so good that I decided to look past it for now. Welcome to the newest coffee & breakfast sandwiches in town! They just opened a day ago, needed to try one of their drinks (and a sando!) They have a variety of crafted speciality coffee drinks and some interesting teas (like the strawberry choco latte that I will be ordering in my next visit if I don't get their banalatte!). I'm always on the hunt for a good latte (yeah, I like my coffee quirky and fun) although their drip coffee has a rich flavor and aroma! The pastry case has a variety of baked goods, from savory croissants to pain-au-chocolat! For lunch I had their "All Day Breakfast egg & cheese Sandwich" which I asked if they can add the veggies (spinach and aragula). The sando itself has American and white cheddar cheese, some tangy mayo like kewpie? And the folded egg omelette! Butter croissant is slightly pressed on a panic presser! It was a delicious not so complex sandwich. It's definitely a laptop friendly environment to do some remote working or even if you just want to have a coffee and doomscroll on your phone. Big fan of banana matcha latte! Theirs was the first I tried and I got hooked -- been ordering that at other places but this one does it the best! The black sesame latte (hot) was amazing as well! The "not too sweet" but still sweet enough brings the nostalgia back like no other. We were recommended to try the avocado toast the first time we were here but they ran out. Decided this would be the first stop on our cafe journey as I saw it on social media and it just looked so cute. This was the only place I have ever seen someone do a thai iced tea with espresso and we opted to try it. Their menu is quite expansive and it took me a bit to find what I wanted, but the server at the register was so nice and patient to help me through the process and helped me get the M&E. The thai iced tea espresso (T-I-T-E) was quite balanced, not too sweet and had a creative twist to typical coffee. The foam on top was better mixed in with the rest of the drink than sipping but give both a chance before committing. The matcha espresso was balanced where the espresso was not overly bitter and the matcha still had a floral essence to it. Given that it was the first cafe, we had to try some food too. We opted for the crogel sandwich which seemed to be an everything bagel and croissant together. The sandwich had a balance of cheese, protein and veggies. I usually do not go for everything bagels but the flavor of this one was not overly "everything". The grande jose burrito was very packed and was quite egg and cheese forward. The salsa is cutely prepared in an espresso cup on the side and it does pack some heat. Super cute coffee shop in Annandale, but the iced latte drinks are just ok. I tried both the banalatte and the butterscotch latte. They seem to use a lot of milk in their drinks so it's hard to taste the coffee which is extremely unfortunate. If they could figure out the balance better, that would be a great improvement. The pastries are not made in-house; they're ordered from some place and delivered "fresh every day". I tried the pumpkin bread and it seems to taste exactly as the one you can get at Peet's. I also got the Teddy's No1 house special sandwich, and it was very tasty. Seating is ample enough, but on a Thursday afternoon, the place was packed, and there was nowhere to sit. Everyone had their laptops out which meant many stayed there for hours working so I would suggest getting there early if you want to get a seat. The music is very loud so it's hard to have a conversation if you're here with someone to talk or listen in on meetings. The power outlets are awkwardly spaced out. In one section where there are 4 tables in a row, the only two power outlets are placed at either end of the section, directly behind two tables, instead of placed in between the tables. This means if you are sitting in the two middle tables, you have to ask to reach in between someone's legs to be able to plug in. Which someone had to do to me, which I didn't mind, but I could tell she felt awkward asking and this could have been easily avoided. Overall, this place is very nice for its cute aethestics, but I would not recommend getting the iced lattes or the pastries here. I would recommend the sandwiches here based on the one sandwich I got. If you want good coffee, I would recommend going to DRiP Cà Phê - Espresso Bar on Annandale Road just down the street. read more

I'm always excited to see a new cafe pop up near me, and this one has sooooo many flavors I'm interested in. I actually went 2 days in a row bc I'm sick so this is a review of those. The cafe is nice and airy inside, but when I first went on a Friday afternoon, every single seat was taken. This tells me they need more, can you imagine on a Saturday or Sunday? There felt like there was a lot of open space to put more seating. Lots of people with laptops or working. On the first day I got the peanut latte, peach lemonade, and banalatte. Everything was so good. My favorite was the banalatte which tasted like banana milk. Incredible flavor. On day 2 I got a blueberry latte and a half iced tea half lemonade (which is technically not on the menu so my bad). The iced tea lemonade was verrrrrry sweet, which tells me that the iced teas are sweet (which I would like!) the previous day I thought the peach lemonade was a bit too sweet so I was trying to game the system but putting something less sweet in but that didn't work. The blueberry latte is exactly how it sounds, blueberry and milk. Mmmmm I would want to try the mango next time, I think I would like it better. But if you put matcha on top of it, it would be fireeeee. Now my friend got the banalatte, the same one I got the previous day. But this time instead of tasting like banana milk it tasted like real banana!! With chunks and all. We didn't really like it, it leaned too far to the smoothie side bc if felt thicker due to the real banana. I'm so curious though if the real banana is what they normally do or if they ran out of banana milk??? I want to have what I got on the first day again, but I'll have to ask.
