We love stopping here as a halfway point on our way home. The restaurant is quaint and historic, and I absolute love that they haven't followed that modern trend of having televisions in every corner. It really allows for a more personal experience with others and true enjoyment of the food without many distractions. The service is good and there is an emphasis on slowing down to enjoy the atmosphere and food, like the French people do. We sat there for about two hours, but had a fantastic time. The menu is a bit expensive, but the food and drinks are worth it! We were even recommended a fantastic Riesling to pair with the stuffed quail special. The lamb was cooked very well and the lentil salad was refreshing. The menu did say that there would be onions and a Dijon vinaigrette, but I only really tasted olive oil. The greens were fresh and the addition of lentils was perfect, though. We stayed for dessert, which was well worth it, especially with the handmade whipped cream! I'll start the review off with the highlights. #1 was our server CARTER! This young man deserves a 5-Star rating as he was simply a joy and extremely thorough at his job! The ambiance of the restaurant was also a highlight as it is definitely a perfect little date night gem with the perfect lighting and preserved historical elements of the building. The last highlight as the bar ... it reminded me of an upscale bar in The French Quarter and the cocktails were perfect! I wish the food was as equally as impressive as the aforementioned, and believe me, we wanted it to be, however, as you see there's not even a picture of my main course as it was so underwhelming I forgot to photograph it. I had one of the daily specials which was the Rockfish topped with crab and accompanied by spinach and caramelized onion linguine....the sound of the entire dish drew me in, but there was nothing whatsoever to write home about other than the nice amount of the crab that topped the fish....and sadly no other news to report. Oh, and the French Onion Soup ... it literally reminded me of Progresso French Onion. Again, I'm always excited when I see French Onion on the menu, but this wasn't what I expected. I would like to think that perhaps we didn't order the right entrees this go round at Up On Market because the neighboring table's steak looked and smelled mouthwatering ... but I am not sure I'll be back in order to see if that's the case. While the food and service were lovely, one part of the experience was not so pleasant We ordered 2 entrees and asked the waiter to plate the meals with half of each entree on each plate. One of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. Reservation was a 6pm, thinking that was plenty of time for the show at the Weinberg Center at 8. We ordered a drink and dinner, then didn't see the waiter again. Once I got his attention (after an hour) I enquired about our meal and ordered another glass of wine to have with dinner. He went to check, and again disappeared. Meanwhile, two tables had been seated and received their meals. At this point, it's 7:30 and we still haven't received our food. Another waiter saw me looking for our waiter and came over to check on us. I told him to cancel our dinner since we now had 20 minutes to make our show. He went to check, and suddenly our waiter appeared with our meals. It looked like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for an hour! The horrendous presentation seemed hastily thrown on a plate and rushed to our table. I told them that we had to leave and didn't want our dinners. The owner came over and to address things, but it turned into a barrage of excuses: "We were dealing with a large party." Six diners! "We have a small kitchen." "All meals are made to order." This one blew my mind! Aren't all meals in a restaurant made to order? "Our wait staff is inexperienced and they lack culture." Now he's throwing his own staff under the bus! I had to stop him as we were seriously pressed for time at this point. Our waiter was suddenly front and center as he handed me the bill for our drinks! I quickly paid the check and left, but not before the owner followed us out to tell us that he couldn't wait to have us back! Searching up local breakfast spots open before ten was a little difficult until i ran in to this wonderful spot. I've passed it multiple times and wondered how it looked like inside. Just as i imagined; perfectly designed down to the little details. This place was remodeled and has an extensive menu worth trying. This place is so cute inside! I didn't see it advertised BUT they have a wide variety of mimosa flavors--all very delicious! We ordered the orange, raspberry, and elderflower. We ordered the ham & cheese omelette, mushroom omelette, and the salmon benedict for our food--they were all incredible. The proportions were perfect and, as a person that loves ketchup, the roasted potatoes didn't need anything else! If you get the chance to speak to the owner and/or read the brief history on this building (available upon request), please do! We learned so much about the history of the building, how they came up with the recipes, and how they built the restaurant. There is an *incredible* amount of detail put into every design decision and menu choice. The restaurant is cozy and well appointed. The issue is the staff and owner-service was non existent. Our party of 4 had a reservation on an evening when there was an event, so the restaurant was full, but understaffed. Initially, the waitress was fine, we didn't have to wait too long for drinks. One of owners came over and chatted as he recognized us as repeat patrons. We placed our order and the waitress then just ignored us, didn't even look over. I had to call out her name to catch her attention for another drink, 20 minutes later, she brought it. We asked for bread and when that finally arrived, part of it was frozen. We had been seated at 6:30 and ordered soon after, and at 8:10 our dinner finally came out. While the rest of the party's dinners were ok, mine was terribly dry so I sent it back. The waitress was visibly annoyed, not sincerely apologetic. Neither owner came over to engage with us about the wait and food issue. We didn't have another hour plus for me to order another dinner, so my party shared with me. I went to speak with the owner about the experience and she was also visibly annoyed that I was bothering her. She made excuses: That's our #1 waitress It's very busy tonight She's doing her best When she asked what I wanted, I said take something off the check, her response was "I am not charging you for the quail" ( that I sent back ). As that wasn't an acceptable response and she wasn't amenable to satisfying her patron, I told we will never come back. Very condescendingly, she put her hand on mine and said you do what you need to do, I have plenty of other customers. They used to be great, but now Up on Market isn't worth the time or aggravation. Gave us eight drink menus and two restaurant menus we had a party of five? We had drinks and appetizers. I had to wait several minutes for my drink, and had to remind my waitress about my drink. (The waitress was fine). However we waiting almost an HOUR for our food. I ordered the filet...please save yourself and order something else. It was chewy and under seasoned sooo much. Our party featured one person with a dairy/egg allergy. We made clear at the beginning that she had an allergy. During the meal she noted she was getting itchy and there must've been something in the food. We told the waitress and just wanted clarification that there was no butter. We were greeted by darth Vader herself - the manager aka the old blonde/grey lady. SHE HAD NO COMPASSION. She was so rude to our table when we were just making sure our friend was ok. She said there was a small amount of parm cheese on the dish which btw is dairy and said "oh that little amount?" YES..REACTION IS REACTION???? There was no is she okay? I came alone and there were several nice sunny tables available in the window. They were really tables for two with three chairs. I was told I couldn't have one of them because "there are people waiting for three tops. No one was waiting. I sat at the bar and the freezing air conditioner was blowing directly on me. I asked to move (after a long wait for service) and was crammed into a table in a corner flanked close by with a table of five people having a loud conversation in my ear. The place was 2/3 empty. I moved back to the bar. I was ignored for half an hour. Meanwhile no one came in to take any of the nice tables. When I told the owner I had been ignored, She snapped, "we're busy.' They weren't. Just disorganized. I ordered a Bloody Mary which was good when I finally got it. And empanadas with lump crab meat for $17. Three tiny fried empanadas off the appetizer menu with practically no perceptible crab meat. When he asked me finally how they were , I said ok, and he asked "just ok?" I explained the lack of crab meat and he replied that they use lump crab meat...even more surprising that I couldn't find it. He did offer to bring something else. Too little too late. In the meantime, the sunny little tables in the window remained unoccupied until a woman alone walked in and they seated her at one of them! I have been here for an hour at the corner of the bar when I would have been quite happy given a decent table, in spite of the abominable service and pathetic food. What's wrong with these people? I've given them three tries with similar results because it's such a cute place. I quit. Unless you have all day, and don't mind indifferent staff and owners, go somewhere else PS When I finally got the bill, the empanadas had been removed. Again, too little too late, my dreams of a Bloody Mary and a light meal in a cute French bistro on a lovely day was ruined. By the way, am I the only one who is sick of substandard treatment because I'm a party of one? Ambiance counts, and it can even overcome bad service and subpar food. A charming little restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's in one of the oldest buildings in Frederick (~1789) and has been renovated beautifully, a la French bistro. This resturant is fantastic and you have to try it. Michelle and Francis are the owners and not only do them make you feel like family their food is a culinary experience. My wife had the crab cakes and with just a couple of bits that I had they were the best crab cakes I have ever tasted. I had the scallops with the garlic mash potatoes and green beans that were out of this world. We topped it off with dessert that too was fabulous. There are a ton of restaurants in downtown Frederick and Up On Market is by far one of the best restaurants in that down. This place is terrible. It's an extremely over-priced, wannabe chic restaurant that doesn't deliver on quality or excellence by any means. The service was absolutely terrible. This also includes the owner. I think we caught his name: Francis...I doubt he actually cares about customer satisfaction given his attitude toward our table. The only nice reception we received was from the hostess/waitress which was less than a minute of our miserable experience. In addition to the bad service, the food wasn't great (especially for the price). We were excited to order the beef bourguignon, but it was bland and COLD. The overpriced steak entree was well-seasoned but you can get better steaks at the same price at other restaurants nearby with better service. And don't let the professional photos on their Facebook give you false hopes. We were literally SO excited to try this place out and had the biggest let down in recent memory. It was the worst dining experience we've had and won't be coming back. In hindsight, we should have left after 30 minutes of not receiving water on a hot evening or even a server coming to the table. It breaks my heart to write this review. We have been trying hard to support this restaurant as it's located around the block from our home. Let me start by saying that Up on Market is a beautiful place with a Parisian-esque atmosphere. Kudos to them for transforming a vacant building into something so lovely. However, our experience thus far has been less than ideal... We went here twice recently over the course of about a month to celebrate our engagement with our parents. The steaks were overcooked both times. I let it pass the first time because I ordered med-rare and I usually order rare and it was fairly close to that. The second visit, however, my rare steak was med-well, totally brown when I cut into it. We had to send them back. They were apologetic and returned with two VERY rare steaks, despite the fact that my fiancée had ordered med-rare. Taking into account that the majority of our party ordered steaks, it resulted in a total of 6 overdone steaks. Their cocktails were delicious, but it would be nice if they expanded on their signature cocktail list. I will say at least the crab cakes were tasty! If your signature dishes are pricey, yet simple steaks and seafood, then they should be executed perfectly. I hope they can improve upon the accuracy of their steak preparation. read more

We decided to try the Up on Market and Inn for dinner. Arriving we had reservations but they were not ready, getting a table ready for a large wedding group so we sat at the bar. Everyone there does everything so the bartenders are also the servers, they were busy and I would say a bit understaffed. The drinks were good but pricey but everything is pricey here. We did get seated and ordered more drinks. They came out fairly quick and we ordered our meals. Service was pretty slow and the timing was not good for the entrees. Three meals came out at the same time, my wifes was about 15 minutes later. I must say though everything we had was very good. I ended up with crab bisque to start. Very tasty and well presented. My main dish was the venison and it was delicious. Cooked as I asked for with a nice sauce and tasty potatoes. My wife ordered the crab cake and for whatever reason it took forever to come out. You could tell it was fresh, the fries were very hot. We finished up with a nice creme brulee for dessert. The meal with tips was $200, not inexpensive but worth it. My only complaint is the service was a bit off, probably need at least one more staff member but these days that is tough. We got into a nice discussion with the owner, about the building, how he converted the building and the Inn. He is very proud of what he has created and should be. read more

I don't like giving bad reviews, but we did not have a good experience. Friday night at 6:45pm and the place was dead. Lots of servers, not many tables. Slowest services I've ever had. Didn't get greated for 25 mins. Didn't get a chance to order drinks and apps 20 mins later. Entrees 20 mins after that. All in all we sat there for an hour and 50 minutes and I had a decent meal and 2 drinks. I only had a chance to order two drinks with the amount of times the wait staff came by. Food wasn't great, but was good. It was not worth the money or the service. If you are looking for a good fancier meal tasting room or firestones is miles ahead in every way Edit: for a $200 meal for 2 people you at least expect the server, the food runner, or at the very least the manager to be able to pronunce a single French item. None of them knew how to pronounce anything we ordered, which was a pretty big red flag. read more

Terrible experience. We had 11 people and it was supposed to be a special night. Our reservation was at 6:45; the table was set for 10 people. Water to arrive at table - 15 minutes, drinks over 45 minutes, dinner entrees was 2 hours and 15 minutes later. The manager told us it was our fault and was quite rude and condescending. Unbelievable. Now the food. Lamb was good; they ran out of their signature steaks and we had to order the filet. They were tasteless and so over priced it's ridiculous. Salads are good but not great. Mushroom soup was good; they charge for bread!! On a $900 bill. One of our guests had eaten 2/3 of her filet before they brought out the sauce for it. I could keep writing for several paragraphs, but why. For $900 it was miserable. We didn't leave the restaurant until almost 10:00 for a 6:45 reservation. You can do the math. We decided we needed a staycation and chose to visit Frederick, MD, about 2 hours away. We had heard a lot about the lights for the Christmas holidays and decided to go see them -- while not huge, they did not disappoint. Because we wanted to be able to walk the downtown, we chose the Up on Market and Bistro to stay at. Right downtown on the corner of 3rd and Market, it is centrally located which made it perfect for us. The owner Francis were gracious, friendly, super accommodating and ensured we understood the nuances of parking in downtown Frederick (parking is definitely at a premium). We had done some research and picked a few places to eat but took the opportunity to dine at the Bistro. The meals were excellent, the wait staff were courteous and professional while ensuring we were taken care of. We had the opportunity to try new drinks, which made the stay extra enjoyable. Our first visit to the restaurant for a Saturday Brunch. Was greeted by a stately gentleman who politely enforced a Strict COVID-19 plan of keeping 6-foot distance between attendees. Waited for 10 minutes for menus and a few more minutes for water. The only waitress asked for our forgiveness while serving others outside. By observation the outside facility was full with approximately five tables inside waiting for service. Notices two couples left after they were seated after us. The ambiance is quite delightful with pleasant background Italian music. The menu was seafood-rich while their main menu having a wide range of selections. Prices are $$$ and above for both menus. I had a very flavorful shrimp croissant with a seafood soup. My wife had a beef sandwich on a roll. Either selection came with side dishes and her sandwich was heavy with horseradish and very light on sliced beef. We may decide to try again for dinner but with so many quality restaurants on Market St that supports higher quality customers service, it may be a while before we venture back. read more

My experience here was the most disappointing experience I've had at a restaurant in a long time. My husband and I were trying to go all out for an anniversary dinner. We had heard good things about Up on Market and had been wanting to try it for a long time. Walking in the restaurant is was a cute ambience, exactly what we were looking for and we were seated and served right away. I've read reviews of bad service from this place, but our server was attentive, so no complaints there. However opening the menu, I immediately notice the prices are prohibitive. Ok, that's fine I don't mind paying money for high quality food, after all we're here to splurge. So we order our drinks, to our surprise, the wait staff makes the drinks. That's fine, a little odd because they had to look up how to make the drinks (and they used the wrong liquor in one of my drinks). I could see how this would slow things down if the restaurant were busy. So we put in our food order and when our appetizer arrives it's very small, flavorless and overcooked. It's certainly something that was frozen and then served. I was going to order a glass of wine, but after seeing the app, I didn't know if I wanted to invest anymore money into this place. I was glad I didn't because when my entree arrived it was the absolute most mediocre food. While it was edible and I ate the whole thing (I was starving saving my appetite for my big dinner), I could have prepared that exact entree better myself. It felt very cheap. My swordfish was flavorless. The night before I went to an Italian place where I ordered an entree, app and a glass of wine for less than my entree costed at up on market and that food was 100% better. So sure, if you want to pay exorbitant prices for food you can make better yourself, then this place is right for you. Otherwise, I recommend going some place else. read more

My friend and I came in on a weekend afternoon around 12pm without reservations, and we were seated immediately. The atmosphere of the restaurant was pleasant and we saw several items on the menu that looked good. We put in an order of appetizers while deciding on the main courses. All else considered it was fine in terms of noise level, seating, decor-- however it took a while for the wait staff to come back to our table to get our main orders in, and the food took a long time to arrive. When the mains eventually got to the table, it was lukewarm at best but we shrugged it off because it was still tasty (or we were just really hungry by that point). The biggest thing that made me want to rate this location so low was when the final bill came, we were taken aback by the extra surcharges that got tacked on with zero explanation. There was also an additional $3+ fee simply because I asked for a small plate to separate my salad onto (which to be fair, they did write somewhere on the menu on one of the pages that there will be this $3 fee for "sharing" a main but is this the same thing??). Not only that, but the math of the suggested tip on the receipt itself was way off. No amount of justifying and tallying up did the percentages make sense so definitely do your own math and watch out for scammy behavior like this. We didn't feel it was worth it to stay around any longer so we just split the bill and left it at that. For the quality and quantity of food on our plate, we did not think the prices were worth it and we both thought we should have gone elsewhere. All in all, I don't think either of us will be visiting here again which is unfortunate because the history of the building itself was really cool to read about. read more

The owner, Male, seated us and asked if we had been there before, yes 3 times, He proceeded to tell us the historical improvements, what they did with each board. We gently reminded him, we've heard the story. At each course, regardless of our conversation, he inserted himself into the conversation with recounting how he learned to make bloody Marys from his sister, when he was 12. No consideration of his guest conversation. Each course, brough a new conversation from him, although we told him several times we new the story and we could read, which they have printed for the diner to read.
