First I am going to say I am not a fan of NY style pizza. I am more of a Detroit style pizza. That being said, we ordered delivery from this shop. Easy app to order and delivered quick. Hubby wanted to try NY style pizza so I indulged him. He really liked the thinnest of the crust, not too much sauce, and lots of cheese. He was a happy camper with this pizza. If this would've been pre-pandemic I would've given it FIVE Stars! What a difference a pandemic makes! Wow! My first time back into Manhattan and my first stop is Upside Pizza! Last time I was her was around February 2020. Since this place first opened around 2018, I e been always impressed with the pies here. From the perfectly tasty crust, to the exquisitely seasoned tomato sauce base and the nice proportions of cheese and meat and expertly cooked pies. What happened with that pizza? What happened with the original guy that I saw almost every day....from spotting him early every morning preparing dough and getting the first pies in the oven. I could hardly wait for lunch. When I finally got back and checked inside, everything looked the same as before, except that the original guy wasn't there anymore!! How much difference could his absence make? Unfortunately, it made ALL the difference in the world!! Such a disappointing experience. To start with, the dough was like cardboard. No tasty irresistible crust, I felt like crying! The tomato sauce, meh is a oak I can say. Is it different tomato's? Roma tomatoes or San Marzano's? Whatever they did it's not a good thing. I ordered a slice of the thick pepperoni (a square corner) cause they didn't have the spicy sausage available. After the big hit of salt, I was hit with the overcooked crust, nondescript sauce......such a disappointment to say the least. I still gave it two stars, mainly for its nice guys and friendly service. I truly hope that the original guy comes back and makes everything alright with the pizza world in midtown Manhattan once again! When that day comes, I'll be back. Don't get too excited! This isn't the best or the greatest pizza in NYC. it's good but unless you're sitting down and getting a pie, it might not be fully hot and there are so many pizza offerings in the city and in this area to try. First, I'm not a pizza snob, maybe just a snob. Most pizza has its charms and there are categories depending on your mood, time of day or night, convenience, price point etc. You cannot give a blanket review without context. So with that in mind, I'll give two, thick and thin references. The "thick" Sicilian style at Upside is very good and get it crisp, but when it comes to Detroit style thick, there's A Place in the jersey city heights called Low Fidelity that kills this style hands down. I mean, it's lifetime memorable and that to me is the sign of something great. My favorite "thin" in the city and perhaps the world is the tri pie at Joe and Pats on 1st avenue, they offer the same pie with three sauces (vodka, marinara, and pesto) at their other family related locations. It's not cheap or by the slice, but you can get it by the slice at their staten Island location. Happy pizza eating in the city that never sleeps and even the .99 cent a slice places satisfy. read more

Yet another really good pizza spot just opened, another one consulted on by the pizza master, Anthony Falco, aka Millennium Falco. Located in the armpit of the city, it's one of the few redeemable businesses on that stretch of 8th ave between Penn Station and Port Authority. Fun branding, very similar to Falco's own Rad Times Pizza, good hip hop music, and really great pizza, this is a real gem for this neighborhood that will be a go to recommendation and spot for myself any time I'm in the area now. read more

Solid slice in midtown. The pizza guys from Upside just gets it. The crust is crispy but soft. The sauce has the perfect balance between acidic and sweetness, and the cheese is pretty awesome too. Please keep in mind that there are not tables at this location. You would order your slice, wait until you're called and then fold and eat (it doesn't get any more NY than that). Prices are reasonable a for the quality of the food. The slices are average size and the service is good (pizza guy is pretty friendly). I tired the mushroom white slice, and the pepperoni square both were excellent. The only reason I would not give it 5 stars is because of the location. We all know 8th Avenue is not the best place to eat a slice on the street. Other than that go and get your pizza and go elsewhere to enjoy it. read more

The Sicilian was the better of the two, thanks to a solid interior. The tomato sauce was thick and creamy and the texture was soft. However, the cheese was a bit too burnt and the edges were charred. The Sunny Goldstein is a seasonal pie, which utilizes sungold tomato sauce. A bit tart, it provided a unique flavor, but not one that had me craving more. Quantity: Standard size slices, Sicilian is a bit heftier than usual. Value: $3.50-$5.50 for a Pizza Slice. Ambiance: Upside Pizza is located in Midtown Manhattan. The location is tiny with most of the indoor space dedicated to the kitchen. Guests have just enough space to order and then are immediately back outside. They had two high-tops set up on the sidewalk, which would make busier times inconvenient. Expect to stand and hold your plate. Crowd: Tons of people walking in and out, but very few ordering pizza. Tourist location creates weird traffic patterns. Service: Friendly guys behind the counter, pleasantly surprised to see them wiping down the outside tables immediately after use.
