The Uptown Diner reminds me of a 50's diner without actually being jukebox themed. Maybe it's because I always opt to sit at the counter to skip the wait. You will definitely want to get here before ten thirty on Saturday (and walk if you're able), it's so busy! But the positive news is, it's for good reason. The breakfast here is awesome. The absolute best thing I've ever had was their Elvis Waffle. It's a really big Belgian waffle with bacon bits in the batter and peanut butter and banana slices on top. It may sound like a crazy combination but it's crazy addicting. Another top favorite is their Crab Cake Benedict. The hollandaise and crab just melt together, I love it. For those with a serious sweet tooth, the chocolate chip cookie dough pancake is killer. It's doughy and gooey and cookie-licious. There's no other way to describe it. On the other end of the spectrum, they also have some decent healthy options. When feeling especially obedient to my health regimen I get the veggie scrambler with lots of broccoli. I'm addicted to this place and since my first time trying it, it's been at least a monthly habit. I am obsessed with diner food and breakfast, so naturally I'd gravitate to Uptown Diner. It's almost always packed when you enter, but don't despair! Service is super speedy, and you'll be served up mass quantities of carb-heavy, hangover-curing, breakfast classics in no time. Their breakfast specials are my favorite - I always get the eggs, bacon, and special pancakes (the pineapple upside down pancakes are to die for, and the cookie dough pancakes - smothered in chocolate syrup and whipped cream - are worth the subsequent heart attack.) Bacon is always cooked to perfection: crispy but not overcooked. Everything else though...meh. The regular buttermilk pancakes are fine. Biscuits and gravy and the French Toast are both lackluster. Specialty pancakes, bacon, eggs, and service are all a 10. The servers are all super friendly and very speedy. Food is served promptly and they keep the coffee coming! Have you ever told a drunk a country fried steak sounds so good right now? How about have you told that to 7 drunks on the same table? Yes. We were celebrating one of my friends GF's birthday and somehow we ended up here. And yes, everyone ordered the same things with different eggs and one person tried to get "sunrise" eggs. They were busy!!! The food hit the spot. Sausage gravy on the steak was yummy.. Hash browns were crunch and well cooked. I have no complain about their food, food was great. But.... Only complain I have was about the service, I bet at 3 am, no one wants to deal with the bar crowd. But they didn't have any silverwares on the table and when we asked for silverware's, our server brought bunch of forks and napkins and put it on the middle of the table and left. We couldn't find her for any refill. All these, I would say - 1 star. The other star was for actually not bringing out all 7 meal plates. She brought out food for 6 people and walked away. We got a hold of her after 5-7 mins. She went back and brought the 7th plate. Also she never separated the bills. But I will try them on a slower time, when it is not so busy. I liked the food. For some reason, I always remember the Uptown Diner as really fantastic. And then I get there, and well... it's just not really that great. The food is pretty good for the most part, but the prices are kind of silly for what you actually get. Especially the split-charge that costs almost as much as the food itself. It is your typical diner, but they are open late, and located right in Uptown.. what could be better? I lived right down the street from this place for a while and always looked at it, but ventured in only once! The food was pretty decent, I had eggs, and toast, and bacon, and juice! You know, your typical..GREAT, breakfast meal! It was at like 5 am too, so the place was pretty busy and food was extra greasy!. The Uptown Diner has come a long way since the dark days of 2011. Then, I went to breakfast with friends and after a perfectly reasonable time for three people to order and eat a meal, maybe 40 minutes was asked by the waitress to leave to make room for the all of three people waiting for tables. We did leave, and then Come Monday I called the manager to raise hell. At first I got some babble on issue but in the end got all 50 or so bucks back the three of us had paid to eat. A recent experience there (it took me that long to come back) was better. Decent coffee, great service, nice ham and cheese omelet with some tasty done just right hash browns. From what I see I would recommend it for sure. Priced right too, which can be hard to come by in this area. read more

First of all, this is a review of the Uptown Diner, not the Uptown Bar, which is well covered in four of the other nine reviews on this page... I appreciate the enthusiasm, but a bacon and cheddar omelette should not have half a pound of bacon in it. At a certain point, it just gets gross. Said bacon was also of questionable quality. Add to the experience a chocolate-banana shake with too many stringy chunks of unblended banana and slow service on a slow night and you get a reason to not return. read more

Well damn, why didn't someone tell me I was missing out by never having eaten at Uptown Diner?! It might be my new favorite breakfast spot. I had my first Uptown Diner experience yesterday afternoon, and despite the fact that it was almost 3pm, I opted for breakfast (pro tip, never pass on breakfast food, regardless of the time of day). I ordered the crab cake eggs benedict, which I discovered, after the first bite, was an EXCELLENT choice. The crab cakes were very flavorful, and the poached eggs were perfectly runny. And to complete any good eggs Benny, the hollandaise sauce was on point. It came with a generous--- and I mean very generous-- portion of hashbrowns on the side. The hashbrowns were tasty, but I couldn't even make a dent in them because I was so full. Finally, as with most diners, the coffee was good, and plentiful (yay for frequent refills!) I have no complaints about the service or cleanliness, all of that was acceptable. My only real complaint is that one of the employees was vacuuming the carpet in the dining room (like right next to us) for several minutes. It was loud and annoying. Besides the noisy vacuuming, it was a very positive first experience. I can't wait to return! read more

How does this place have above a 3-star rating? The Uptown diner is not terrible, but definitely no more than ok. The food is ok at best. The prices are higher than it should be and the service is spotty (some times good some times bad). The reason I went to uptown diner at all was because it was there. At the time, I didn't know of any better place to have breaksfast or grab some diner food. The place really benefits from have "diner" in its name and having that big sign on Hennepin. However, I have not gone there since having found better spots. The place is not horrible, but I'm surprise people give it more than 3-stars. The physical restuarant is kind of nice and classic looking though. Perhaps people enjoy going there an reflecting on the experiences they've had in similar better diners in the past? read more

Heard someone say this was no longer open 24 hours. I was there in June at 4am, so I hope that this isn't the case, because part of the Uptown Diner's rating is DEFINITELY that it's open twenty-four-freaking-hours-a-day on the weekends, and that deserves a whole lot of loving. At 4am I got a bagel with cream cheese, a big cinnamon roll, and a tuna melt with a side of hash browns and a coffee. Big, solid diner menu. Big, solid diner meals. You should be able to form an intelligent assumption about what you're going to get at a place like this. The food will probably come in slightly above that guess. Win. read more

I'm a regular customer of the uptown diner, Just came from there disappointed, frustrated and gven poor customer service. I was supposed to meet a friend at the diner my friend change their mind. I previously made a reservation for two as I waited for my table I noticed I was being passed up twice! I later asked why I was at being passed up they told me their policy was not to seat someone who's waiting for someone else to add to there table, I would not have made a reservation of being informed of this, this is a poor policy I told them; after getting upset "your policy is too turn customers away?" after I said that the host/server could not even answer me back and all she could say " it's our policy" they didn't even communicatie to me what was going on . In all my customer service experience skills in the hospitality industry, this is how "not" to treat a customer; this takes the cake to tell a customer NO! this kind of experience makes me have less confidence at this particular restaurant... I often wonder how businesses continue to flourish that provide no real customer service skills for there staff especially when these kinds of events happened to someone like myself or someone else , also how come there is no manager/owner on the floor? especially on the weekends to negotiate such events, It behooves me. My boyfriend and I ordered food here and it was the most unprofessional experience. First they messed up our order and gave us someone else's food. So once we got home we had to go back up to get the right food which they charged us for someone else's order. I called into complain and Joe the general manager was so unprofessional. He told me that he would physically throw me out of there- asked who raised me - yelled and swore at me. They asked for the original food back when we had already open the bags - which would be illegal to serve out to someone else. After calling the general manager Joe blocked my number and called me a f****** r*****. I don't think Joe should be the general manager of a restaurant after he messed up several orders and continued to over charge us and then treat us like crap. Order the cinnamon roll it is delicious! They have giant portions, I ate my omelet for three meals. I also believe they are open all night long, I know I have been there at 3am. The rest of the food isn't very good, I have eaten here for breakfast twice and other than my cinnamon roll I have been disappointed with most of my food. Coming from NJ I was excited to check out this place. I've been craving great diner food and this place looks awesome from the outside, but the experience was overall disappointing. We showed up around midnight on a Saturday night and I was excited to order some typical post-bar food. The service was a bit blase (they didn't seem particularly excited to have customers) but we ordered a variety of things. My burger was hugely disappointing. The patty was unfortunately flavorless and overcooked. The breakfast that my friends had ordered looked better, so maybe I made the wrong choice. The first time I went to Uptown Diner it was after working a really long day on July 4th. My friend and I were to busy throughout the day that we didn't get much time to eat and we were starving. Luckily Uptown Diner is open 24hrs!!! When you are starving in the middle of the night there is nothing better than that. The food is also delicious. After my initial visit I have gone back a few times and I have never been disappointed. I have had the Carnita Benedict, Spicy Cajun Benedict, and the Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes, and all of them are very flavorful. Wait time: It usually does not take me more that 10 -15 min to be seated for brunch. If you are short on time I recommend calling ahead. Parking: They have a few spots reserved for customers in the parking lot next to the restaurant. For anyone who knows the uptown area you know this is key! read more

This is the diner of diners. Bring a Tupperware because you will have leftovers! The Cajun breakfast delicious - huge mound of hashbrowns with "spicy" hollandaise and eggs (Minnesota spicy, but they have hot sauce which will do the trick). If you're really looking for a sugar coma, the cookie dough pancakes are, well, exactly what they sound like - no maple syrup needed there. Diner breakfast classics are all good, and the booths are squeaky and pleather as can be. Never had non-breakfast food there (breakfast is served all day), but good malts are a good sign. read more

It actually masters it quite well blending it's 60's diner decor, with it's 80's diner cooking. I wasn't overly impressed with the food itself as there is nothing super outstanding about it. It is exactly what I would have expected when I ordered Eggs Benedict, well with the side fact that the portion was big enough for me to have shared it amonst three people! Better than Perkins? Uptown diner is great for the gut bomb you need from a long night. There are many other places that I would go if I wanted a legit breakfast though (hell's kitchen, good day cafe, fat nats). They have the perfect serving size for the drunken hungers and the perfect amount of grease to keep everything down (and out?). My 5th time here! We went there for breakfast on a Sunday at 8am so there's a small crowd in the diner. I ordered the carnitas Benedict and it was amazing. The dish consists of an English muffin, topped with pulled pork, and poached egg. The pulled pork was absolutely amazing, juicy and tender - great flavor too! The poached egg was perfectly cooked, topped with hollandaise sauce (a little lemony but still good). The waitress was very friendly and very patient to explain through the huge selection of food on the menu. One thing I have to say is that the eggs Benedict isn't consistently cooked. One out of my 5 visits here, the poached egg was overcooked. Hence, no runny egg yolk :( read more

Great place, awesome service and very delicious food. Unfortunately for me, 50th street cafe closed down, but luckily found this place which is owned by same folks and has a similar menu. Our server was fantastic, had a smile (even though working on Black Friday, when half the world is busy shopping) and made sure we had everything we need including hot water for my sick wife. We had the caprese Benedict which was fantastic, as I live pesto sauce and the blend with egg was just too good. This is going to make me look for this dish every diner I go. Hashbrowns were made perfectly well and complimented the sauce. We also go veggie scrambler with fruits on side (probably canned fruits) but nevertheless healthy version for the wife. Ambience was good and not so loud (just like 50th street cafe). Con- this is in uptown so have to drive all the way up here, as compared to 50th street cafe which was around the corner for me. My daughter and I went to Uptown diner today after church, the staff was incredibly rude, when we stood at the front desk to get on the list to be seated 2 waitresses walked by us and did not say anything to us and then the hostess walked up to the counter did not greet us and just shouted out the next person on the list to be seated, it would have been nice to have been welcomed and asked if we would like to be added to the list so we could enjoy breakfast but that was not the case so we left and went down to The Lowry were we had a wonderful experience! read more

I was up early, so I went for breakfast. I've driven past this place many times, but never stopped in before today. Like I said, it was early (about 6:15 AM), so my experience may be different from many other Yelpers. I walked in and the place was empty except for a couple servers, the cook, and me. Everything was clean, and I loved the rarely found "Seat Yourself" option. I ordered hot tea (since it was a cool, rainy Saturday) and a custom omelet with hash browns. Tea included a clean mug of hot water, a selection of various organic teas, lemon wedges, honey, and additional hot water. My omelet arrived in about 10 minutes, and it was so stuffed with sausage, green peppers and cheese, that I had to take half of it home after devouring the hash browns. Sam (my server) was great! She checked in with me, but was not stopping by every few minutes to see if I "needed anything," which I liked. Old school service that was attentive, but not intrusive. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed Uptown Diner before...I've been there more times than I can count...all between the hours of 1AM and 3AM, although they are open all 24 on the weekends. I guess it's probably because Uptown Diner isn't anything overly special. It's pretty typical diner food, and the focus is mostly on breakfast. I'm a fan of the caramel rolls, all warmed up and gooey at 2AM....however, their pancakes aren't the best. They're kind of dry...I had high hopes for their chocolate chip cookie dough pancakes once upon a time, but I wouldn't suggest them, not a lot of flavor, and like I said, dry. The other downside: their prices aren't exactly cheap...it's not like it's an expensive place, but all in all, it's not someplace you go to save money either. The service isn't bad, but it isn't great either. Sometimes they are super packed and it's late, so I understand. All in all, it isn't anything to complain about, but it isn't anything to write home about either. Up until this past weekend, I've always opted for one of the combo breakfast platters (eggs anyway you like them, toast, hashbrowns, and sausage/bacon). It's always been decent, or at least decent at curing that weird craving. However, I decided to try the breakfast burrito on a whim. It was seriously delicious. Plus, the portion was huge and I had enough for a whole other meal with my leftovers! Uptown Diner, unfortunately, I cannot review without being biased. I used to live in Minneapolis, and was my go-to breakfast stop (when I could afford breakfast). So when I returned here years later, there was a sense of nostalgia. There's something unique about the qualities of this place. It's almost hard to pinpoint what it is. The first thing I noticed when I brought my wife there for the first time, and the first time I had been there in 6 years was there was no significant changes aesthetically. It's interior was just how I remembered it. That is not a bad thing, at all. Uptown Diner has the niche of being able to cater to many different lifestyles and types of people. There is no set dynamic of persons there. Looking around you'll see the hungover'd college kids, the "hipsters", elderly couples sharing coffee, and the good 'ole family with children having a brunch. We fall in the latter. The service is pleasant, courteous to all. On the note of service, the past two times we've been back there my wife, daughter, and I have had the privilege of being served by the same person. I kept her receipt for the purpose to name drop her on Yelp. Our waitress, Jo, was fantastic! She has always been so upbeat and positive. I have no idea who could be that way in the morning, but she was amazing. She always pays attention to her tables, easy to converse with, and is very complimentary to her fellow co-workers. I hope if you go there after you read this review, you get the pleasure to be seated in her section. The food there is diverse and delicious. The have something for everyone, to the eat-anythings to the pickiest of consumers. One thing I did notice was there menu had extended to accommodate a larger selection for vegetarians, vegans, and others who may certain food restrictions. Being we know people who have these certain values, I really enjoy finding places like this who give a larger offering. I, personally, love bacon with my breakfast, and can't imagine life without it. So those options aren't doable for me, but they're there. The only neutral point I'll make is that there prices are, to me, above the average fo what you get. This sort of varies from dish-to-dish, i.e. - crab cake eggs benedict & certain sandwiches are both around $10. Good deal for the crab cakes, not that great for a sandwich. The food is good, but I think some of the prices exceed the value of the meal. In summary, you must go here! Even if it's just a for a malt or a cup of coffee. It's a staple in the Minneapolis community, and I would expect we will go there every time we stay in the cities. In regards to my mentioning on price, I don't even believe that's a negative point.
