Very om-nom-nom, unpretentious, basic diner. Good hang out place after the clubs close and you're really hungry coz you just shake what your mama gave you for the last few hours or so. It's loud at 2:30 AM, so your friend who still thinks he's in the club and talks like it, too, is duly ignored or just given amused looks. Food-wise, it's very good. I was in Minneapolis for 2 days for some grad school interviews and some students took me here. After being intrigued by the Gyro Omelette (although there were several other convincing options) I went for it. I decided to go for the egg white version, which was a dollar extra but still just as good. Thanks to all the flavor on the inside of the omelette you really won't miss much without the yolks, which you can't say for all omelettes. The meat was plenty and the tzatziki sauce was perfect complement to the rest of the breakfast. Hash browns were some of the better ones I had...I mean you could pretty much taste the butter. It wasn't dry at all and it was really just awesome. The breakfast also came with two pieces of toast and I asked for a side of peanut butter just cuz that's what I like to put on my toast. Unfortunately they did charge extra...I believe $.75 for 2 packets of peanut butter. I've always loved this place. I had to cruise through and show support before I got out of town when I heard the news that they fired employees who had photos of them in Nazi paraphernalia. Breatkfast is where it's at! The cinnamon rolls looked great--although we did not try one. We went right for the French toast, pancakes and ham and cheese omelet. The omelet was loaded with ham, the pancakes were the huge white fluffy kind. I prefer a heartier pancake, but the kids loved them. The French toast was fabulous! My favorite of the table. The portions are HUGE so plan on sharing--and the major downfall is huge portions combined with no children's menu. Service was fast and friendly. This was my favorite diner in the Twin Cities while in college. Considering the neighborhood I found Uptown Diner to be completely unpretentious with great service and a laid back vibe. My go to dish was always their crab cake benedict which was always a huge, delicious portion. Excellent service, vibe, food AND a parking lot. Terrible experience. First time (and only time) ordering breakfast for the family online. Spent $89 on a couple of combos. Called the restaurant to add an order of waffles. Person on the phone said he would take care of it. He did not, never recieved my order. Called back and got the run around. When looking for a good Sunday breakfast spot that is casual and has that classic diner vibe, I recommend Uptown Diner. This place reminded me of somewhere Guy Fieri would visit (maybe he has!) on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. We ventured here on a Sunday morning after a long spell of day/night drinking (for a good cause of course, Pub & Putt Classic in downtown Minneapolis). The only downside was the crowd, but I commend them for handling it very well. We waited only about 20 minutes and they turned tables quite fast. 20 minutes in our case, though seemed longer because of our current state of being tired and too much Pub the night before. All we could think about were pancakes! Once seated, our server was Johnny on the Spot with water and coffee. The food came out very fast which was impressive. Everything we had was great. I can't count how many times I've driven by this place and noticed its dated sign and used-to-be-a-Denny's architecture and kept on driving. Well, tonight, having the incentive of a sweet Twitter deal for b1g1 sandwiches, I took notice of the Uptown Diner and boy was I glad I did. It's got a diner feel to it, but this ain't no Denny's. Once you've been in there for more than a few minutes, you notice the beautiful prints on the walls and the shiny tables and chairs catching the slowly-setting summer sun. It pulls off an impressive feat of capturing the essence of a classic, while also conveying a message that says "we're more than kitsch." That's all well and good, but how's the food? Good. Quite good, actually. We both got the signature Uptown Burger and it is definitely not for those on a diet--of any kind--1/2 pound beef patty, american & swiss cheese; bacon; crisp, buttery sourdough toast; with a dollop of mayo for good measure. It comes with a portion of seasoned waffle fries or sweet potato tater tots (po'tater tots?) that could make a competitive eater wince. All of that for under $10! Good thing they don't skimp on the beverages either because you'll definitely work up a thirst. The lemonade was pretty good, too. It's sort of a happy medium between fresh-squeezed and MinuteMaid. You'll like it. The service here is about what you'd expect from a diner. While not necessarily bad, it's about adequate. Our server was pleasant and happy to bring us some extra napkins when we asked, but was slow on the beverage refills. Not a deal, breaker, by any means. I'm sure the drunken crowds who pack the place on a weekend are just happy to get their food, soak up their excess libations and stumble on home. I came here because of a great b1g1 sandwich special they were running through twitter. I decided to get the Uptown Burger, which is a 1/2 lb patty with buttered sourdough toast, mayo, two types of cheese, lettuce, tomato and applewood smoked bacon. It came with a choice of salad, soup, waffle fries or sweet potato tots. I chose the waffle fries and was really happy I did. The burger and fries plate was absolutely huge and delish. The waffle fries were very crispy and had great flavor. There was so much food on my plate that I only ate half my meal, which is a pretty good deal for $9.50 (pre-twitter special). I also ordered a glass of lemonade and was happy to see that they had real lemonade and it came in a very large glass. The ambience of Uptown Diner is casual and pretty nice. It's a tad worn down but not too bad (our booth seat had a tear in it). The bathrooms, however, are disgusting!!! I was absolutely appalled by the amount of dirt and grit in the bathrooms. They were dirtier than most gas stations. Definitely avoid going to the bathroom here. The service was great, the staff was super friendly and helpful. I have been to the Uptown Dinner a few different times for breakfast. Each time I have been there the waiting area has been packed liked sardines in a can. This is partially because it has the best traditional breakfast list in the Uptown area that I have found and because they will not call names on the waiting list outside. While the amount of people waiting to be seated can be daunting it does move fast. Their service is mediocre, they are not the best at keeping your water or coffee full (I usually have to ask). The last two times I have been there the waitress has forgot to put in our order for over 20 minutes, she told us she forgot, but didn't apologize. Also every time someone's order seems to be messed up. Not sure if this is because they are trying to get people in and out quickly or what. I have enjoyed their breakfast specials I usually go for the #1 1/2 or the #2, they are pretty safe bets at any restaurant for breakfast. They give you a large helping of hash-browns with the #1 1/2, which are delicious. read more

Went in on a weekend for breakfast and the place was bustling. Regardless they were good on getting us a table with a short wait. The hostess gave a 15 min wait and was good with not underestimating as we probably were seated under that. Ambiance is diner with an interesting color scheme. Royal blue with perhaps a hint of purple on the walls and some orange and yellow splashed in. With the bustle and the diner atmosphere it doesn't hurt the feel of the place. Given the flow its a good place to people watch as there was a variety from college to families to 60+. The menu is good with lots of options and large hearty portions. There is a large serving of hashbrowns that comes with most of the plates in some form. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. They are super busy so they won't hover, but I was not left wanting on refills. (I drink a lot of water) The food was tasty even as leftovers the next day. Came here with a friend for brunch last week and left with a meh experience. Our waitress was very nice and she recommended the chicken fried steak. The potatoes were not hot, and the gravy had a weird aftertaste with a congealed texture. I got a biscuit with it and it was also ruined by the gravy. The better points were the waffle fries and the piece of chicken fried steak. Other than that thought, I didn't really like the meal. The portions of ginormous so maybe next time if I find something I want to eat here, at least I would get a lot of it? I love this place its my go to when I don't know what I want to eat at night. I haven't had one thing on the menu I did not like honest to the big man upstairs. Me and my boyfriend love there malts & shakes I get the cookie dough malt and he always gets cookies and cream one. My experiences with the Uptown Diner have been hit-and-miss. While it is convenient if you need a late-night dining experience in the Uptown area, I definitely think there are far better options food-wise. Their breakfast items are pretty safe. One item that I enjoyed was called the cajun breakfast (I think). I have a good appetite, but even I had to take a good portion of it home with me. But then you have items like the Cuban sandwich which are poorly executed all the way around. If I had to make a suggestion, I would say stick to simple dishes like those on the breakfast menu. Pros: Open 24 hours, location, friendly staff. Cons: Average food at best, street parking can be a nightmare around there. read more

Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes, Tex Mex / Farmers, Minnesota Omelette. That's whats up, and anything with their waffle fries. I'll be honest, I've never been here before 1AM on weekends in my early twenties. But everytime I go, it is on point. The food portions are huge, so you can share with your other friends that may be slightly intoxicated. People watching is fun here too at the right time. I sort of call this place "last chance diner," because there are some people that walk around hitting on people that they struck out... from wherever they came from (club, lounge, etc.). Yes it is kind of funny that you have to stand in line sometimes at 3am for a table but it's a part of the charm of this little corner diner nestled in the heart of Hennepin. The caramel / pecan rolls, take one home with you and try it out. It's got a kind of odd addicting quality to it. If you've read some of my other reviews, you know I lose patience with upscale restaurants that try to get me to like the food by overusing butter and bacon. That said, the Uptown Diner is kind of a grease palace but I like it anyway because nobody's claiming that this is fine dining. Fabulous hashbrowns--a slab of shredded potatoes, oh-so-crispy on the outside, potato-y goodness on the inside. Build-your-own omelet contained FRESH spinach, none of that chopped frozen stuff. Pancakes the size of life rafts. Next time I come here I think I will split an entree with someone. Our waiter was good-natured and patient, and cheerfully accommodated a substitution request. Nice to have kindness from a big, slab-ly ponytailed dude instead of Perkins' typical apple-cheeked Christian youth. This place is only a block from my apartment and I've never given it a chance because it looks utterly mediocre and not too amazing. However, I turned to Yelp to set my opinion straight. It seems like people generally love this place or hate it. I decided to come with my fiance early on a Saturday morning. We're both morning people, and it was snowing, so I thought maybe there would be less people wanting breakfast. I strapped on my snow boots and we walked to Uptown Diner. He's a very picky vegetarian that doesn't like eggs. I'm a vegetarian that doesn't like syrup. But luckily we both found something we LOVED. He got the pineapple upside down pancake (just one) and he could only eat half of it. I'm not even sure why it was called a pancake, it tasted exactly like pineapple upside down cake. Delicious, but intense and filling as heck. I opted for the Caprese Benedict. Holy mother, it was delicious. Giant slabs of mozzarella and chunky tomatoes on top of an english muffin. There was an amazing pesto hollandaise sauce that they unfortunately drowned my meal in. - That's why I'm giving you 4 stars Uptown Diner! The hollandaise was amazing, but they put a soup-like amount on top and it completely soaked my hash browns. But, I ate it regardless. read more

My daughter was excited to try this place for dinner one night, but it turned out to be a disappointment for the whole family. We love diner food because we usually expect the experience to be all about the food. Instead, this place seems to take the lean heavily on the Uptown part of its name and sacrifice food quality in favor of large portions and higher prices. I am willing to concede that the place may be better suited for breakfast or late-night eating than dinner. When we visited the place was sparsely populated and the service was indifferent. The young man who served us seemed like he might be a sweet guy, but he just seemed to be tired or bored. This is about as classic a greasy spoon as you'll find in the Uptown area. You don't go there to be adventurous. You go there because you know exactly what you want, and they know exactly how to make it for you. And let's be honest. You go there for the breakfast. I've always had stellar service. They're quick on coffee refills and are attentive with everything else. My Lady and I have spent many a brunch there, feasting on carmel apple waffles and the excellent country fried steak and eggs (remember Patton Oswalt's great routine about the KFC bowls? That's how I feel about country fried steak and eggs from Uptown Diner...just mix it all together and inject it into my femoral artery with a caulking gun). Their eggs Benedict is really good, as well. In a rare fit of wild adventurism, we once ordered lunch there. She got blackened catfish and I got a burger. The burger was just average, and the catfish was too salty for her liking (I didn't think it was too bad). But we decided after that meal that we'd stick with the breakfast menu.
