Ryan's been cutting my hair for about a year now and he's consistently great. It's honestly hard to find a salon that does men's hair well, but he gets it. This last cut was exactly what I was looking for. I asked to keep the length and go for more flow, and he nailed it. He texturized it perfectly so it doesn't feel heavy or bulky, and it falls a lot more naturally. He really listens and makes small adjustments that make a big difference. I was in major need of a haircut. This upcoming March would have marked THREE YEARS since my last cut. My hair was nearly all one length, some old dyed hair that were near the ends, and sitting below my lower back. Bleh. I was referred to Lien here by my sister. Making an appointment was quick and easy. Lien was very flexible which was great for me! The salon is very large and can seat I want to say at least 8-10. They did have a back part of the salon where I saw employees and clients head in and out of. I didn't need to go back there since I was only getting a cut but from my view I could see this is where clients can go to sit under the heat lamp. And from reading prior reviews the other part of the back section is for a visit to their esthetician. I showed Lien my inspo pic for long layers. She made it clear that the image would show choppy layers if not styled which I wouldn't style everyday. I trusted what she decided to do and LOVE it! At least 4-5 inches were cut + more when she moved towards layering. We made great conversation, pricing was very reasonable, and the salon was a space I would love to come back to. I waited a little before writing this because I wanted to see how my hair would actually behave after the haircut and styling advice and honestly, I'm so happy. She really listened to my concerns (having a fine, thin, naturally curly hair) and gave me a cut that works with my natural hair instead of fighting it. For the first time in a long time, I can wear my hair down and natural without feeling like I need to put it up. She also recommended a simple product combo (styling gel and volumizing mist), and it completely changed how my hair looks and feels. Even 3 days after washing. I have been going to the salon for a couple of years now. I moved up here and needed to find a new stylist. I brought my color formula with me from my stylist in the Bay Area. After a couple of tries with other people I was grateful to have found Lien who uses the Redken color line and has had lots of experience with it. She is warm, kind, friendly and definitely knows her stuff. I trust her 150%. She's also done color for my daughter and it turned out great. The salon is very welcoming and has a cool aesthetic without being overly snobby. It's clean and bright. Everyone is super nice and hip and they are all very good at what they do. I've been putting off finding a new stylist for awhile. Today I made it my mission to get a hairstyle with long layers to frame my face for my cousin and I. I called a few local salons in Elk Grove and was hoping to scoop up someone's cancellation appt. Stumbled upon Urban Monk, called and within the next few hours I got a call and text that Mili could absolutely do both of us around 4pm. I can't tell how happy we both are with our hair. This is hands down the best hairstyle I've had in more than 20 years. She offered color and root touch and of course I was all in. BEWARE! This review is specifically for Miya Martinez. She has over 20 years of experience, but I've never had balayage done as sloppily as she did mine. The "technique" she used was basically freehand and winging it, making the bleach go anywhere unevenly. The brush she used was scratching my scalp, it hurt. No foil was used to separate bleached hair. She bleached, toned, trimmed, and curled all without letting me see because apparently "I'm a licensed hairstylist of 23 years. I do not consult or ask my clients to check or approve the steps of which I use to achieve the color they are asking me for." That was her text to me. She did not achieve the look I asked for and even when I commented on the color, she said "any darker and you won't see it" meaning she didn't want to do anymore work. What happened to the customer is always right? I'm very particular with what I want and her work was not it! I'm very unhappy with her service. I wanted to treat myself, but instead I've been unhappy and wondering how I'm going to fix this mess. I don't want to spend hundreds again just to correct her mistake, and she won't do anything about it (correction for free or partial refund so I can get it fixed elsewhere). She said she would have to charge me again. Another text she sent was "I also didn't charge you for your haircut which is normally $65 because you were short on funds but your ends looked so terrible from you cutting it yourself I went ahead and gave you a haircut at no cost" ..... I have no idea why she would say I didn't have funds when I paid the deposit prior to my appointment, and paid the full amount plus tip when it was time to pay. Who's judgmental? I cut my own hair, yes, but that wasn't her problem to fix. I asked how much the haircut was and she said it was included, so I had it done, but if she had said $65 then I would not have had it done since there's a girl I usually go to that I love but she is booked for a while. The only positive thing I can say is she "accommodated" me on her day off. Had I known the outcome would be horrible and make me feel worse about my hair, I never would have booked with her. I've included our text exchange. Also, she blocked me. Lol! Otherwise, the salon has a nice and open ambiance. This review does not reflect the other stylists. read more

She communicated with me consistently until we both found a time that worked for me to come into Urban Monk, which I appreciated that she didn't give up on me! Lien did my hair EXACTLY how I wanted it and asked for. All I had to do was show her what I usually get done from a previous salon in the Bay Area, and she did exactly that. She gave me a lived in highlight that doesn't require me to come in more than twice a year, perfect for a busy mom like me! She knows what she's doing, she's professional, quick, and does beautiful work. I felt comfortable and relaxed with her, and I just knew that she was going to do a wonderful job and I didn't have to worry. Upon arriving, she was ready and on time and greeted me with a smile. She is professional yet warm and welcoming. I went from super long with layers to blunt shoulder length with somewhat difficult to manage hair (thin, but a lot of hair, curly/frizzy).
