The restaurant is located in the cute downtown area of Plano! Plenty of parking in nearby lots or on the street. Ambiance: This restaurant is HUGE! They have a large first floor seating area, large upstairs seating area, and a covered rooftop to enjoy basically almost year round. Service: The servers here were very friendly! We went on a weekend afternoon and basically had the whole second floor to our group. Food: The food here was so good! Probably one of my favorite TexMexs around the Plano area so far. We went to Urban Rio early last night for Mother's Day. We had a great experience. Our server, Seth L., was attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the overall ambiance. Even though it was Mother's Day and busy, we didn't have to wait for a table, it wasn't loud and we didn't feel crowded. The food was really good and reasonably priced for the high quality. Our server was a bit inconsistent on checking in with us; my friend requested a refill on the black bean dip and had to ask multiple times. Overall, your experience may just depend on your server. We've been eating at Urban Rio for the last 5 years and it remained one of our favorite places for interesting offerings , good quality food and great service. Unfortunately, our experience yesterday was such a let down, I have to write a review. We can usually count on very good food, but last night was such a disappointment. I don't know if Urban Rio has a new cook, but we noticed the beans and bean dip were completely bland. We added salsa to both to try and improve the flavor but it was seriously lacking and nothing we did helped. Additionally, our food arrived promptly after ordering but both of our plates were cold. We sent one plate back and decided just to keep one plate, since when you send plates back it can take awhile before they return. When the plate was finally returned, several minutes later, it looked like the kitchen had microwaved the plate and then dumped all of it on to another plate. So it wasn't exactly an appetizing experience. We usually stay for dessert or extra drinks after dinner, but after having had such an unpleasant meal, we decided to leave. The staff were okay, but not as great as in the past. It seems they have newer staff, so maybe they haven't completed their training? In any event, I am sad to say we won't visit Urban Rio again. There are plenty of other Tex-Mex places in the area that offer upscale dining experiences with interesting menu offerings. read more

We got here at 5.30pm on a Friday night and it was empty - but within half an hour it was busting at the seams - so we accidentally picked the best time to arrive! Amazing margaritas, attentive service (thanks Manny!) and great food. I wasn't a fan of the mole sauce that came with the tortilla chips but that could be just me being picky. I had the tamale pie as I've never see anything quite like it on a menu before. It tasted amazing but was SO filling, I couldn't finish even half (definitely a dish for sharing). My kids had the beef tacos and my picky eater finished the lot! We will definitely return when we are in the area again read more

This is one of my go to Mexican spots in Plano. The upstairs patio you can walk to and get seated immediately if you find an open table. They have live music or a DJ up there sometimes and that makes the place more energized. Downstairs is still great too just more traditional ambiance with an upscale vibe. Drinks are great, solid tequila selection, and food is great. I recommend the crab enchiladas or the stuffed avocado. Fajitas are good but not great. Service is usually good. Out of every 10 times I go, maybe I get a slower waiter 1/10 times. Try it for yourself! read more

We just returned from enjoying another wonderful meal .... Except! This is the second visit where I've had to ask the server to clean the table. Then I made the mistake of looking at all of the trash under the table. Finally I brushed the chip remains off the chair. The waiter had decent customer service. He was very knowledge about the menu. However was not prompt about refilling our drinks. The Steak skewers and empanadas were amazing. First I'll say my wife and I have visited this business on many occasions. We usually sit upstairs at the bar or a bar top table. Today 10/19/25 at around 3:45pm we walked into the restaurant and made our way to the upstairs bar. Finding two seats at the bar and happy to see the Cowboy game that had just started at 3:30pm was on. It did take a minute to get greeted, but could tell the female bartender was busy. We did order a soft drink for my wife and a frozen margarita for myself. We ordered queso and chips and the female bartender appeared annoyed. A short time later we ordered pork carnitas. At some point a male bartender arrived. While still eating, the female bartender dropped the check in front of us and said nothing, and walked off. Well we are not done yet, my wife would like a refill on her soft drink and I'm going to get another margarita. Very odd and rude. My wife did get her soft drink refilled by the female bartender when we asked for it and again she appeared annoyed. Upon finishing my margarita I asked the male bartender for another margarita, He was pleasant and quickly delivered my drink. The female bartender proceeds to grab the dropped check left in front of us and replaced it with another updated check and asked if we were ready to pay out. (Side note, I never asked for the check, I'm eating and drinking the food I ordered, just Ridiculous!). I then asked her something like is it shift change, or are you leaving? She says yes, and walks off saying 30 minutes ago...... Wow! Very rude, not professional, and somebody who should not be in customer service. I promptly then paid our $41.00 tab, left a $6.00 tip when I should have left nothing, especially when I didn't even drink the margarita I just received. At that point we had no desire to spend another second or dime at Urban Rio Cantina. We would rather go someplace else to spend our time and money where it's appreciated. If we could give "ZERO" stars for today's experience we would have been happy to. read more

Abi was initially OK at first. However, the elderly white couple came in after me and Abi made sure to ask the elderly white couple on SEVERAL occasions if they were OK. She was extremely attentive to them. She went to their table way more times than she went to mine. She would go to their table several times and just skip over me. Any interactions that she would have with me were very rushed and felt forced.. She even asked the elderly white couple if they wanted a dessert and checked them out before me. Mind you, I arrived before they did. She did not ask me if I wanted a desert or anything like that. I hate to play the race card, but I don't know what else to say. A very unpleasant experience. My friend didn't like her tortilla soup. My friend enjoyed her tacos and my other friend enjoyed her chicken enchiladas. Our service was just poor. We never received our fries when they brought the food out, we were almost done eating when DeDe stopped back by and asked if everything came out ok. So we had to wait on the fries. The prickly pear drink, was juice. I don't believe any alcohol was added. I almost asked if they had forgot it but I'm exhausted at this point with the service. Interesting restaurant that's not typical north Texas texmex. The queso and chips were good, the brisket enchiladas were not that great. The brisket was overly sweet like candy sweet with lil smoke. The rice was undercooked and crunchy. Didn't understand the need for two different colored rice piles. The stuffed avocado with chicken was a decent deconstructed style salad with crunchy onion topping. The booth was overly tight for its size and with weak seat springs and microfiber cloth made it difficult to squeeze in/out. Rarely visit this side of Plano so not sure if I'd be interested in returning. read more

Not a fan of Tex mex food but this restaurant did it right. I requested my Carne asada medium rare- and they delivered! Great service and lots of space- we came in as a party of 8. In the end we ordered the smores dessert dish, which included banana, strawberry and regular flavored marshmallows. Urban Rio is the perfect spot for brunch, lunch or dinner. I've been here at least 10 times and the service, food and drinks never disappoint. They have various happy hour specials every day of the week (see the attached photo). Urban Rio has a large seating area and bar downstairs, and the upstairs bar seats approximately 15-20. This was the location of a co-workers retirement lunch. It was a great location with fabulous food to celebrate her. We were in the back in a private room so we had the right ambiance for the conversation with our group of around 15. The pork carnitas were very good. The carnitas are shredded with a touch of crisp to them. Served with your choice of corn or flour tortillas and selected the flour tortillas. Three tortillas come with the order, which were perfect amount for the meal. If you want a sampler of items, get a soup and an appetizer. The tortilla soup was flavorful with chicken, bits of carrots, potatoes, and topped with avocado. The could have been a little warmer as it cooled off rather quickly.
