Three words come to mind; overpriced, tiny portions, and tasteless. Had ordered once before from "urban wok" and it was much better the first time (had flavor, portion sizes were small for the price, but adequate because it tasted good). This time it was really bad in a variety of ways. Was at my bro's a few days ago, and decided to order two bowls; I got the udon steak bowl, he got the some chicken bowl with rice noodles with extra veggies. Both were really chintzy, and cost about $15.00...apiece! For $15.00, we each got 3/4 filled containers (of the typical small square sized Chinese food containers) of tasteless, small portioned food. After the order was put in, it came to $40 total somehow with the tip. I assumed my brother had ordered an appetizer to reach such a total, but when it arrived, sadly there was just the two containers that fit comfortably into a lunch bag. After that initial disappointment, the first thing noticed when opening the container was how little food there was, not even coming close to the top (pretty standard for any eatery to fill up, especially when charging twice as much as most other places, without any organic ingredients involved). I hoped the taste would make up for the lack of food, but it had no taste whatsoever, except for a hint of orange and overwhelmingly salty, along with tough, tiny pieces of overcooked steak. I tried my bro's bowl, and that was even worse, because in place of little to no flavor, it tasted off, and was unappetizing enough to not try again. Besides being overly salty, and tasteless, both dishes were extremely oily as well. For these portions, and prices, the Urban Wok would be overpriced even if everything were organic, but it's not even that..and it's not even enjoyable to eat. Definitely the most overpriced meal I've ever paid for. I was hungry 45 minutes later, despite the oil content. For comparison sake, Ramen Station in Woodbury, and Eastside Thai on Payne will provide twice the portions, and quadruple the taste satisfaction for less cost. I don't mind paying more, and getting less, (if the quality of ingredients or taste is there,) but neither can be found at the Urban Walk away with your wallet. read more

The food tastes good, however I'm giving 2 stars due to the unfair portions. I paid $24 for one meal because each veggie is an extra charge of $.50+. I did see that upfront and willingly paid it, but my issue is that when I specifically pay extra for something like jalapeños : I expect more than 2 tiny pieces in my meal. This was the case for each veggie. Paying the extra amount should make my meal larger...instead my container was half full, same as when I did not order extra veggies on my previous order. It's dishonest so that's is why I am giving this business a low rating. The food would be a 4, but the lack of morals ruins it for them. read more

Absolutely terrible customer service. I ordered Urban Wok to be delivered, which went great. However, upon opening my meal, it didn't have the chicken which was suppose to come with. I called the restaurant to let them know my meal was incorrect, and then they told me to call the owner, whose number was on the website. It was not on the website, so I called back, which then they provided me with his personal phone number, which was strange. I called anyway, with no answer the first time, then he answered and hung up, and then didn't answer the third time. Needless to say, that is not how to handle a mis-order. I would have been very pleased with a gift card or a free meal next time, anything. Have still got nothing or heard anything back. Will absolutely not be ordering again nor recommending. Update, he finally answered. I felt like I was being attacked for telling him my order wasn't correct, so I hung up. I will always support small businesses but I hope they can handle a incorrect order better and not refer me to the owners personal cell phone number. read more

I was really hoping this would be good. It is one of the few spots open after 4 or 5 pm in St. Paul which is unbelievable (but more a comment on the city). I got the food as take out, so this is a comment for that. I chose brown rice, tofu, and for the vegetables added mushrooms, broccoli, onion, and one more which I forgot. Bill came out to $13! Can you believe the charge for each vegetable you add?? On an already expensive price tag of $10 for tofu. Even fancy salad places have a certain amount of veggies included. I wouldn't complain if the food were cooked well, but not only was the sauce (ginger garlic) extremely salty, it was also super soggy and wet. How is this stir fry at all?? To cap it off, my take out box was only half full, so I was left still hungry and needed to cook another meal to compensate! I'm not giving it a one star because service was relatively nice and it is one of those few places that are open later, so I'm secretly hoping they improve the place and I'll give it another chance. I discovered this spot when meeting with a buddy downtown. It's a bit hidden (across from the Union Depot) but once there you'll be glad you kept your eyes open...the menu is varied, portions are strong, the ambiance is cool and the staff is both friendly and effecient. They advertise wok prepared food "your way" and it's 100% true. There are lots of options starting with the "base" (various noodles and rice choices), "protein" (from steak to tofu), more than 15 veggies and 13 different sauces from mild to steaming hot. By the way, they also offer wok-cooked apps (do the wings or get some to go for later). The staff was great, the setting was cool (and clean!) and the management is visible and interested in what you think of the place. There are plans in the works for additional locations around the Cities so keep your eyes open. The food here was real good. You basically get to pick exactly what you want so if you mess it up that's on you. But the real star are the guys working! They were super dope and answered a lot of questions I had being new to the area! They deserve high praise because I'd come back just to chill with them again. Urban Wok is truly delicious. Very much like Chipotle and Subway- you gotta pick stuff you'll like, so don't blame the resturant if it takes a few tries to get it right. Below is my perfect combo in case you want to try it. There are some reviews complaining about price and portion size that I wanna push back against- I've never had a problem with that. In my experience portions are always a full to-go container, and unless I'm particulary hungry I get a full meal and a half, sometimes two, out of it. I think the prices are similar to Chipoltle and well worth the money, although if you're ordering instead of picking up it might be a different story. I went here for lunch earlier in the week with my wife. It was a beautiful day so we went for a walk on our lunch breaks and found ourselves here. When we walked in we were greeted by a nicely refinished room and a bar with a row of kiosks that you use to place your order and loud pop-country playing through the speakers. It is a 'cashless enterprise' which i won't try to unpack other than to say I understand why a business would go that way just as much as I understand why cities are considering banning the concept as biased against the working poor and communities of color. The food: my wife and I both had Udon noodles I went with chicken and the "Hot Gochujang" sauce, my wife had tofu and curry sauce. Both had a good flavor, fresh-well cooked veggies, but also severely lacked in the spice level which I should have known would be the case based on the choice of music. For being labeled as HOT, there was no heat to the gochujang sauce though it did have a nice depth of flavor so I wasn't too upset. The Curry, though, tasted bland and weak without heat to round out the flavor. The portions were also small for the price, we each had a drink and spent nearly $35 for lunch and received what I would have rather paid closer to $25 for . The portion size was good for lunch, though. The service: the person behind the counter who's business card says she is the restaurant's 'Lifestyle Consultant'(seriously), was very nice and attentive. We were the only people in line so she made sure to ask if we understood how to operate the kiosk, offered suggestions, and answered any questions we had. The food took a bit longer than I would expect to arrive at our table than I would expect when no one was ahead of us, about 15 minutes. Advice: The concept is good, but not as developed as it could be. For starters they should remove the word 'Asian' from their stuff, the food isn't really Asian and it isn't run by anyone Asian that I could tell either. Calling it 'approachable Asian' when the menu is as much Latin and Caribbean having a Jerk sauce, Green Sauce, and Habanero sauce seems poorly managed to me. Look at the press for The Lucky Cricket and see how bad it can get. The name 'Urban Wok' gets the point across just fine. Calling this menu 'approachable asian' is a bit like casting Emma Stone as an Asian gal in the movie 'Aloha' to make the character more 'Approachable'. Also: Ditch the Music, there is nothing urban or Asian about bad pop-country. Overall, the food was good and I will probably return. I don't like judging any new place by a singular experience or dish, opening a restaurant is hard and mistakes happen. On the other hand the place seems like they put a lot of thought and effort into it and my reservations were on things that seemed thought out. Maybe some of those decisions should be re-evaluated. The restaurant fits the personalities of the people that opened it more than the neighborhood they opened it in. In the end, it seemed to me that the restaurant isn't target at me, but rather at my mother, who is not someone who goes to Lowertown. That could result in downstream problems. read more

My husband and I've ordered Urban Wok a number of times. All of the sauces are truly delicious, particularly the Spicy Peanut, which is rich and nutty. The Gochujang is the perfect level of heat and reminds me of my time spent in Seoul. We've tried many varieties of their noodles; my favorite are the Soba. Some reviewers have noted their portions to be skimpy, but we've found the opposite to be true. The last time we ordered takeout, I had enough food for three meals. read more

I should have paid attention to the bad reviews, this place is exactly what they say. Overpriced, bland, and terrible portions. I paid 18 dollars through doordash for a custom rice noodle dish. After literally 4 bites there was no more steak, it was missing almost all of the ingredients i picked up save for some carrot, onion, and peppers. Noodles were slightly overcooked and the sauce wasn't that good. Basically ended up just being a slimy and mushy tasteless mush. The buffalo chicken tenders i got were equally as disappointing and after making it halfway through i set the food aside and felt gross and made myself some other food. All in all, 36 dollars down the hole from grubhub and left hungry and sick. Will not be coming back. read more

This restaurant is still in its first month and has some kinks to work out. Everything I say here is fixable and I hope the restaurant makes changes because as a resident of Lowertown, I really want this place to succeed. 1.) The kiosks are awesome!! It'd be nice if all the veges would fit on one page (see Panera's kiosks). It would also be nice if you could do a little more customization. 2x broccoli or light/heavy sauce would be nice. 2.) This is a tough price point in downtown Saint Paul. I get the quality is a little higher, but the competition is fast food chinese ($7.50), Thai food (Buffet or meal for $10-13), World of Beer ($8-10) etc. I can get Kincaid's lunch for $12 with a drink. This is on the high end of that ($12-14 with protein). It has to be at under $10 for lunch. 3.) Bowls. The food is served in basically to-go chinese food boxes. These are REALLY hard to eat out of. If eating in, it needs to be served on a plate. This is a common complaint and the owner told me "they are not changing it". Not great management style... 4.) Quantity. Maybe we just got unlucky, but my group of five all received our boxes half full and were left pretty hungry. It was 1/3 of what you would get at any other restaurant. At a minimum, fill the box with noodles, they are cheap. Plus a half full box gives a really bad look. In summary, the space is pretty cool. The concept is great. The food is good. The company just needs to address some of its flaws and it could become a staple of Lowertown (and easily a bigger franchise). Right now though, I would not recommend it relative to the other options in Lowertown and I personally will not be returning. read more

First time here, actually came in because the Elephant Bar was closed. This is a great fusion place of Asian with many different flavors. The kiosk ordering was different but the gentleman behind the counter walked us through the process. I had steak and my wife, chicken, and this was during their happy hour, where all dishes are 9.99. We understand some order to prepare at home too. The orders came out in a short time and they were delicious. By this time, one of the owners came in and gave us some other sauces to try.
