The two girls behind the counter hardly made eye contact with us. We did order our food. While we were waiting an older couple came in and tried to figure out the ordering system. We ordered the soup as well, as someone with a cilantro issue (genetics cause it to taste like soap), my wife enjoyed it much more than I did. Excellent fast casual. It's Americanized fare, but tasty and very, very filling. I ordered the cauliflower cilantro lime rice with veggies and chicken, and they didn't stint on anything-- I could have made more than one meal out of my lunch. The meal took a while, but no fault of the kitchen staff, which had a skeleton crew during a busy period but were apologetic and very clearly working as quickly as possible without cutting corners. This place reminds me of Noodles World Kitchen, I'm wondering if it's the same company. You pick your noodles, zoodles or rice, you pick your protein, you pick your vegetables, you pick your sauce, you can add a spicy sauce but it comes on the side. The sauces come in three levels of hot, hotter and hottest. I ordered the jasmine rice with yellow curry and added the hotter jalapeño sauce. I wish I'd gotten the hottest sauce. But it was still pretty tasty. I had shrimp with an extra protein add on of tofu. There was way more tofu in the rice then there was shrimp but the tofu was really good. The prices online did not match the prices in store. I thought my order was going to be $17.76 as told when I ordered online at Grubhub pickup, and it was actually over $18. It wasn't a drastic difference but it was an unexpected difference when I picked up my order. read more

Had pot stickers were extra and just added into the mix. Found only one and it should have been separate. The garlic and soy sauce was so salty that I was unable to eat any more than my first bite. Awful. The pot stickers were to be 6 but maybe saw 3. It was like eating a strict noodle dinner. They do not use low sodium soy sauce. We've gotten delivery from Urban Wok twice, and both times I found the portion sizes small for the price and the flavor bland. The tofu wok last time only had maybe four cubes of tofu in it. Few of each type of veggie too. (You can choose eight types.) Seems you're supposed to order two different bases for an entree, but I don't want to pay extra for a second base, i.e. butternut squash "noodles" in addition to rice. So if you just go with one base, you don't get much food. When we opened our carry out packages, the food was about 3 inches below the top, and it seemed like we didn't get much for our money. Sadly, this is food without a soul. From the kiosk ordering system to the guy weighing exact portions, this feels like a marketing project, not a restaurant. It made me wonder if it was established by someone who knows nothing about Saint Paul, but imagined hundreds of lonely, hurried commuters would be pouring off the green line looking for a quick fresh bite. Which brings me to the food which i can only describe as watery mush in a takeout box. I was excited to try the zucchini noodles described online as actual zucchini. My meal had some kind of stretchy pasta, that I suspect was not gluten free as described. I dined with two companions who also were underwhelmed. We all agreed the takeout box was a nonstarter for a return visit. We had beef, shrimp, and chicken and we each agreed the protein was the highlight of the box. The concept is for diners to have near limitless combination options. It is as if no one cares if the combos work for flavor and texture. There is no love of the food here. Urban Wok is a gimmick to make money from food. It is not a place to enjoy food with friends. Really a shame because the space is quite inviting. read more

Ordered delivery, but from what I gathered this is kind of a Chipotle style build-your-own rice or pasta dish. I've seen this place for a while, but never ordered it because it seemed like a pretty expensive option compared to all the other Asian offerings in the area. Overall, we were both happy with the dishes we ordered. I got a Pad Thai type noodle dish, and the girlfriend got something in the vein of pineapple fried rice. Mine was pretty tasty, but was a little dry, while her rice was a little oversaturated. The flavor was great on both, though. And while they have a decent selection of options, I feel like they could still expand their veggie offerings. We finally chose this place because of the 30% off discount through Grubhub. Even with that discount it was still pretty expensive for the amount of food received. Generally $30 of Asain food (again, that's after the discount) can be expected to last us both two full meals, if not more. That wasn't the case here. The portions seemed lopsided between the two of us (I had significantly more), but were still pretty small for the price. Would probably only order again if a promo is going on. Don't you do it! I am actually only giving Urban Wok 1/2 a star; the following are my reasons. I ordered the beef and chicken, with udon noodles, been sprouts, bok choy, snap peas, mushrooms, green onion, and the garlic ginger soy sauce. Both the beef and chicken were tough and over cooked, the snap peas were nearly raw, and the 1 mushroom that I found was rubbery, with a chewing gum texture. I received 3 slices of bok choy bulb, 1/2 TSP of green onion, and, I kid you not, 2-1/2 inch pieces of bean sprout. This was all horribly finished in a black peppery, salt lick marinade of garlic ginger soy. Well, they say it's got ginger. I say they're saving money by just increasing the BP kick. The noodles were decent. Big whoop; it's not like they made them from scratch. read more

The ordering process was fairly easy, I liked the idea of an order screen but wish it was a little more easy to use and allowed more customizations. The person making my meal was very nice and still allowed me to do half noodles and half brown rice. I did see there was an option of taking the ingredients home and making it yourself. I ordered half buckwheat noodles and half brown rice, veggies, chicken, and peanut sauce. My meal was finished very quickly and I received a text when it was done. With the first bite, I noticed a slight metallic taste which bothered me a bit. I couldn't tell if it was the sauce or one of the ingredients but I was glad I asked for extra soy ginger sauce so I could try and cover up that flavor which helped. The portion wasn't disappointing, but it would have been nice to have a bit more chicken compared to the base. I can tell this place is still fairly new and hope they make a few changes to make this a great lunch/quick meal spot. read more

Urban wok was a good meal, a great fill and the ingredients where great, i only had a few complaints, like incorrect measurement of oil need to make it (some of it stuck to the pan and took a while to clean it up, but the wok still stayed warm), also some times it was dry and other times it was nice. I like the idea of this restaurant, I wasn't wild about the food. I had a brown rice chicken dish with pineapple, red onion, green onion, carrot and snap pea with peanut sauce. The person helping us said the medium spiced sauces were truly that and not 'Minnesotan hot'. I thought my dish was over sauces, making the rice gummy (or maybe the rice was gummy to start and the over saucing exacerbated it?). The veges and chicken were flavorful, the pineapple tasted like it was out of a can. My work partners got different dishes, one zucchini based with the house sauce (she liked it) another rice based who also thought hers was over sauced. And my sauce was Minnesota hot, it was not spicy at all. Nice restaurant space and food atmosphere. Lunch + beverage will put you back about $15, which is high for this area for lunch if you are not receiving table service. You are served in a Chinese container and it will only be about 2/3's full. I'll give them another shot in a month or two to see if they worked the kinks out. Went to a similar concept in Whistler, except the patron picked out the ingredients from a bar and you paid by the ounce. Th whistler meal was better cooked and more flavorful, and it's what I was comparing it to. Around here I'd head to Lee's express to get a Chinese fix, at least for now, it's less expensive and more flavorful. read more

I really like the food, but I ordering online is a big problem. Last week I ordered two meals and my appetizer wasn't in the bag when I go home. I sent them an email letting them know, but never got a response. Today I placed an order which appeared to go through since it took all my credit card information and gave me a time when it would be ready, but when I got they said they had no record of it. I didn't have another 30 minutes to wait for a new order so I just left. The problem was NOT with my credit card because I went right next door and got a coffee using the same card and it went through fine. Finally it is a real pain to drive up to pick up because there is no place to stop without blocking traffic. A couple of times I have pulled up and stopped only to have people behind me honk, so I go around the block and by the time I get back the person bring out the food has come out, not seen me, and gone back in, so I have to start the whole process of calling all over again hoping that the same thing won't happen. I probably will give Urban Wok one more chance, but three strikes you're out. After all , it's not like they are the only place to get food in Lower Town St. Paul. read more

I want to be waited on and I've worked in a lot of restaurants, You go to be served and to have your wants met. The computer system you order on is overly confusing and you can't pay with cash? That's BS and a trend I will never ever support. The place is so useless I will never go back and I live 2 blocks away. I wish I could give it no stars. The ambiance of the space is fine but the concept is not very appealing and the food was underwhelming. It is as though they went out of their way to remove all human interaction from the experience. So as a Light Rail Operator and this place sets right on the side of our ending station ( Union Depot) I noticed right away something was going in the spot. Today I decided to try it meaning the food and time it takes to make seeing I only have 15 min before I leave again. I loved the look of the place and I think it's cool they have you order on iPad looking things the main complaint that I have is that it takes away the one on one conversation and with it being new it's hard to decide on menu options or understand the menu fully. The guy I seen was moving fast so I didn't bother him. I got noodles with a few veggies,chicken and the peanut sauce. It was ok not something I'd order again kinda sticky mushy but was different then anything I've had. I think the sauce was what I didn't like but they have at least 5 others so I'll try again.
