Scheduled a take out order for 9:30am and the food was ready and hot when we arrived. It stayed warm until we got home to eat it. Can't comment on the service or ambiance since it was a to go order. We enjoyed what we ordered and it was fairly large portions as you would expect for a diner, everything tasted delicious. I had the greek omelette which came with potatoes and toast. The omelette itself had great flavor as did the potatoes (cooked with onions and peppers). The toast (I opted for rye) was warm and not dry. We also tried the buttermilk pancakes (3 per order) which were tasty and moist. My husband had the mexican breakfast wrap which had great spice from the jalapenos. It is expensive for a diner, but that is the case with all diners in Manhattan. Overall a good breakfast spot with portions you expect from a diner. read more

She had the yogurt and fruit and granola, a huge bowl with lots of beautiful fruit around it; I saw that and I was sorry I didn't get it! I had 2 eggs, toast home fries, usual diner fare. We were seated immediately as we were a party of 5! Most people that were waiting were singles or doubles. I was concerned that since we were a large party, and this was just a diner, that not all of our food would come out at the same time, but alas, it did ! Everything we ordered was solid-- French toast, egg wrap, nova Benedict, omelets and an order of kids Mac& cheese ( they had a hard-to-find kids menu in Manhattan). All food arrived hot/they were able to easily make substitutions ( scrambled rather than poached eggs in the Benedict ) and they served oat milk! We had 3 children with us so this place was perfect: no long wait, no weird or unexpected spices in the dishes, service was excellent too with coffee and water refills all around. Two gigantic thick pieces of toast and completely dry and flavorless. When I came to the dinner I had just gotten oral surgery on my gums and I needed something soft to eat. I was craving macaroni and cheese with ketchup and they had just that. The person who took my order behind the register was really nice. The macaroni and cheese was creamy, soft, and cooked just right. The cheese was sharp and soft at the same time. It was a great pick me up/comfort food and the portion size lasted me around a week. The platter shows only a side of macaroni and cheese, although it was a lot. I've only ordered the macaroni and cheese off the menu but the burgers and fries looked really good with a diet coke. There are plenty of things that I would like to try off the menu and I look forward to trying a dine in experience rather than just ordering to go. The Utopia Diner seems like a great place. Have lived nearby for 50 years and food had always been good. On Friday 8/22 went for dinner on my birthday because I craved my my favorite... breakfast of cheese omelet with bacon fries and toast. What a let down-- toast was cold, omelet was cold bacon over cooked. And the coffee was brown water. Even the buttter was too hard too spread. Now this was around 6 PM and it was quiet there so no excuse! I'm not shy about complaining but I was with my friend and celebrating and decided to let it go. I would like to give Utopia Diner 4 stars, despite its flaws, because large, spacious diners enhance neighborhoods. And too many have closed since 2020... But one obnoxious waiter (not the very nice older ones) overcharged me just yesterday ($3.75 for a can of Diet Coke), gets orders wrong, pushes for tips on take-out orders (I tip anyway, partly because it is NOT expected), and doesn't even pack the food correctly. For years way before the pandemic I would frequent Utopia and have great dinners there. Recently I went back to the diner for dinner It was renovated and look really nice. I ordered Matzo Ball soup. The Matzo ball fell apart and the soup was watered down. I also ordered an Omelette with swiss cheese. It was tasteless and I know it was not Swiss cheese in the omelette. I also ordered a can of Diet Coke and they gave me a can that had expired. This use to be one of the best diners on the upper west side. I would not ever go back to this diner. Boy was I wrong! When my order arrived it was no where near what I thought a stuffed baked potato would be! They sliced the potato into four wedges and put SLICED CHEESE on top. No butter, no salt...just a tasteless potato that I had to doctor up to make edible. To make matters worse, it cost close to $15! The honey mustard salad dressing I ordered was two packets of honey dijon SAUCE (like for chicken tenders). I was to shocked and disappointed to complain. It was the worst moussaka I have ever had, stale meat with two pieces of Aubergine inside. Utopia holds a very special place in my heart. I moved to NYC five years ago and my first agency-provided housing apartment was on the UWS on W. 71st. Utopia diner was one block away and I would go here anytime I wanted a good, satisfying breakfast at any time of the day. Upon walking inside, it just gives me that NYC diner feel. Nothing fancy or pretentious, just cozy city diner vibes. They do have the usual autographed celebrity headshots hanging up behind the cashier. There are coat hooks randomly secured around the interior. The owners are friendly and personable. And of course, the food is consistently good and portions are generous. I usually have a little bit of leftovers. The coffee is nice and strong. The service is very quick and efficient. This place gets pretty crowded, I've noticed, especially during the weekends and there are lots of early birds. I, personally, have never had to wait, but I can see them having more customers than they can seat during a busy morning. They have booths to fit families and also smaller booths to fit just two people. There is also a counter where you can sit. I have no complaints about this establishment and will definitely continue to stop by when I am craving a good simple and satisfying breakfast while I am visiting the UWS. read more

My wife and I went to the Utopia Diner this morning at 10:30. There was only one or two tables occupied. We were greeted and seated by a somewhat gregarious man of apparently middle-eastern descent. Our first hint of what was to come was his comment that "We don't want to be another Carmine's". We were served coffee, and placed our order for breakfast. That's when the wait started... We watched while 4 other tables became occupied, all with at least 2 people. We watched over the next 25-30 minutes while all of the other tables were served. We had to flag down a server to ask for a refill on our coffee. Then we waited some more... A server finally came out and explained that they had an issue with "bubbles in the waffle batter, so they had to re-mix it. Should be coming now.". We waited another 10 minutes, watched as another table, folks who arrived a full 15 minutes after us, was served. It is worth noting that my wife and I are Black. All of the other diners were White. Not wanting to be further disrespected by their subtle but apparent racism, we stood up, tossed a $5 bill on the table, and left. I guess they are "another Carmine's". read more

The wrap wasnt that great (everything felt kind of excessive and didnt mix well), but that wasn't my initial problem. My initial problem came when i got my plate and I saw that I had a handful of fries on it, and not even a 5 guys handful. Maybe I'm petty, that'll be up to you to judge, but when I go to a diner I'm expecting decent portion sizes. Especially if the meal is $16. I did notice that another guest had fries with their meal and got way more than I did, so I'm not sure if they were rushing when they made my plate or what. First time here and I'm judging it as an outsider. This is place is not the cleanest, not the most luxurious, or the most sophisticated brunch place. But, it does have loving and caring people that work there. I got greeted with a big genuine smile and a welcome, which is already more than a lot of places in NY. I asked about they Challah Toast and was encouraged to get it. I'm all about trying new things so I did. It was super tasty, thick slices of bread soaked in egg wash similar to a French toast but with a much more thicker slice of bread. The coffee was more acidic than normal, tasty but strong and acidic. This by far, is the biggest side of bacon I have ever seen.
