My husband and I stopped in to Frankie's on a recent Saturday at 5pm. Our kiddo had a performance down the street at 6pm so we had a little time to kill beforehand. The neighboring spots looked busy so we decided to go with Frankie's, seeing as they were less inundated at the time and we had a time constraint. Another allure was the sandwich board at the front door advertising discounted cocktails - sold!! Inside there were a handful of patrons at the bar, another table with two additional patrons and maybe a couple on the patio so it was fairly quiet and slow, so it looked promising. We headed up to the bar and hung out behind two empty barstools, the single female bartender greeted us and said she'd be right with us, but then continued chatting up the seated patrons, serving them and their friends that had just joined (AFTER we'd arrived). We moved a little further down to the handoff area where she was making drinks to save her having to come back to us again, and stood there for probably 10 minutes while she took orders and made all the drinks. We commented that she looked like she could definitely use a hand, and she said they were still adjusting into summer hours and determining whether more coverage was needed at this time - I figured 5pm on a Saturday should be primetime, so I'm not sure in what universe having a single bartender makes any sense. Finally we placed our cocktail orders, waited while they were made, and then put our card down for the tab. After we'd paid, I noticed the cocktails were more expensive than advertised on the sandwich board out front - I couldn't find a disclaimer anywhere that said only certain cocktails were included, so while it was a bummer I wasn't about to wait another 10-15 minutes to catch her attention and ask for clarification. Just a heads up to beware of whatever is advertised that might summon you in from the sidewalk, and make sure you ask before you make your selection. Drinks were very subpar, nothing special to write home about. While I can appreciate the Gatsby-esque vibe they're trying to uphold at Frankie's, they really should increase their staffing especially during prime weekend and evening hours, and be more transparent about their specials and what's included and what's not. Hindsight is 20/20, and the low volume of patrons when everything else around it was going off was probably a sign, so we'll skip Frankie's our next go around.

In this case, "low-key" refers to a tiki bar that is not over-the-top; one that doesn't cause you to enter into an entirely different reality. There's a time and place for that sort of tiki bar but in a small coastal town perhaps you don't want or need to enter a fourth dimension. The Lobby is small (though larger than I'd anticipated), not noticeably dark (like many in the genre), and outfitted with a nice array of tiki-themed tchotchkes. Scooby Doo, playing silently on a small tv above the bar, is a perfect accompaniment to the pleasing decor. I both ate and drank here and found nothing not to enjoy. Tiki bars generally elicit happiness in me and this one, with its excellent server, did not change that mindset. An Astro Chimp ($14) was my tiki drink of choice, mostly because I was interested in trying a cocktail featuring cold brew. Very good, and it did not keep me up all night. Fish & Chips ($23) was a sizable and satisfying portion, plenty there to be shared by two. "Brussels" ($11), were also quite good and ample. You will not go hungry if you choose to dine here. The Lobby is a fun choice for your time in Oceanside. Stylish and satisfying on every front, I'd happily return. Other stuff: * There is apparently a stairway-accessible rooftop deck here but it was closed for a private event during my visit. If open, definitely worth checking out. * 5% surcharge is automatically added to everything you spend here.

The place has a cool idea behind it, but you can tell it's missing some of the professionalism and attention to detail that comes with running a good bar. The one thing that really saves this place is the view. It's a really nice view, and during sunset I can definitely see why people come here. Locals are obviously NOT their target anyway. This could be defined as a typical beach area bar hang with limited food choices for tourists who aren't expecting value.

Let me start by commending the staff for their exceptional service. Their attentiveness, kindness, and assistance were indeed noteworthy. Despite our anticipation for a delightful Michelin Star dining experience, our expectations were sadly unmet. Our reservation, made over a month in advance, led us to an outdoor seating on the patio. Contrary to the fine dining ambiance we anticipated, we were greeted by metal tables and patio chairs, hardly reflective of a Michelin Star restaurant setting. The overwhelming noise from a nearby surf competition concert, compounded by traffic noise, significantly marred our dining experience, making it challenging to engage in any conversation about the delightful dishes we hoped to enjoy. Also , there is no restroom in the actual restaurant . You must go into the hotel or outside the restaurant . That seemed a bit strange for this level of service . The absence of the promised valet parking, owing to a beach event, added to the inconvenience, compelling my husband to park a considerable distance away. While the external noise was beyond the restaurant's control, a thoughtful seating arrangement indoors could have salvaged our evening, offering us the enjoyable dining experience we eagerly anticipated. Amidst the cacophony, the patio seating felt akin to a casual backyard gathering, overshadowed by a blaring concert, hardly justifying the substantial expenditure of over $500 for a meal for two. As for the culinary experience, it unfortunately did not compensate for the unfavorable ambiance. The dishes, characterized by an overpowering acidity and saltiness, lacked the harmonious balance of flavors we sought. The Lamb Birria, chosen by my husband, was disappointingly gamey, accompanied by dry and acidic tortillas. By the fourth course, our eagerness had dwindled, replaced by a longing for the meal to conclude. Roberto Alcocer's Valle is an innovative and stylish restaurant serving up a unique take on Mexican fare, with an emphasis on pairing gourmet food with Mexican wines from the Valle de Guadalupe. The dark and elegant dining room reminds me of the ultra-stylish Pujol in Mexico City, where Alcocer trained. I began with a Polano cocktail and it was lovely. The four-course tasting allows you to choose each course from about 3 or 4 options and I appreciate the flexibility. I began with a complimentary amuse bouche and they all tasted great. My first course was the wagyu tartare, served with smoky Mexican spices on toasted bread. It was lovely and flavorful, a unique taste on a classic dish. I continued with the "not Cesar" salad, an interesting take on the classic Mexican salad that came with pistachios. My main course was the catch of the day - sablefish from Oceanside. The dish came with a garlic mole-like sauce - truly delicious. My dessert was also lovely, chocolate gingerbread men with ice cream. I selected the $45 wine pairing and each wine was presented and explained expertly. Chef Alcocer personally greeted me and other tables, a personal touch. Overall, Valle is a great spot. read more

The food was good. The service was good but not great. The wine was excellent. On a general note i find the 20% "living wage" service charge on top of a tip extremely hypocritical and a typical word play. Shouldn't the employees be payed out of the cost of the extremely expensive food? You are paying hundreds of dollars for a meal and three to five times the retail price on a bottle of wine but you are supposed to pay a 20% "living wage service charge" then add another 20% tip. If these owners really wanted to pay a living wage they would pay it out of the very expensive food and wine rather than asking you to pay 20% service charge and an then saying it's not a tip and you should pay an additional 20% tip. Don't stick it to the customers twice and call it a living wage while you keep all the profits. The only ones who make out in that arrangement is the restaurant owner who gets to pay the living wage from the client and take home the profits from the overpriced food. Pay your employees well from the cost of the food. read more

My wife and I have spent far more on a dinner than we did at Valle and walked away feeling great about it. That was not the case here. The $485 price of a 4 course dinner for two was grossly overpriced for the small portions and terrible flavors that we were served. The small bites were bland. The lobster taco was no better than what you would get at the corner Mexican fast food restaurant. The rabbit dish was so over salted it was hardly edible. The deserts were simply disgusting so we left them uneaten. The $100+ wine paring were all sub par Mexican wines. Michelin should be seriously concerned that they have someone that bastardized a star by awarding it to this restaurant. I have to believe they were bought off. Long story short, do NOT spend your money here, you will regret it. Even if it was at half the price, you will regret it. Oh yeah, then they auto charge a 20% tip. Yes the wait staff are nice and trained well... the one bright spot. read more

Disappointing Private Dining Experience We recently had a private dining experience at Valle, and while the service was outstanding and attentive, the food left much to be desired. The chef's creations, unfortunately, did not live up to the hype. One of the most underwhelming dishes was the simulated "oysters" which tasted like nothing more than brined salt water straight from the ocean. The presentation of the dishes was impressive, but the flavors fell flat. For a restaurant of this caliber, we expected much more balance and creativity in taste. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, especially considering the premium price tag. Would not recommend for private dining. read more

They location is nice and well decorated. This is a coursed meal, you only have the choice of a vegetarian option or the surf and turf. I highly recommend getting the meats involved. The service was impeccable, they did an outstanding job explaining each of the dishes. I generally don't eat course meals, but this was a special occasion and this was the right place for it certainly. They did have a private room in the back which we enjoyed. They also have a kitchen you can sit in and watch the meals being prepared and have the chef himself explain it to you. I didn't get to do this but I certainly am going to get a reservation for that at some point. read more

Food is priority and everything was great. What makes a place exceptional is the service and atmosphere and it felt spectacular! I believe most people whom given bad reviews really are hyper focused on flavor only and their deeply subjective arrogant opinion. Sure, that's fine but if you've ever actually tried to open a business yourself it's so difficult and people can be so mean! I mean how could anyone give this place anything less than a five star? Our second visit to Valle was just as memorable as the first! This time, we chose it for our anniversary, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. The tasting menu was outstanding, with only one dish repeating from our previous visit. Our server was impeccable, going above and beyond to make our evening extra special. We were seated on the patio, which was perfect, with the ocean just across the street. Yes, the restaurant is on the pricier side, but that's to be expected from a Michelin-starred establishment. The Koji Aged Rib Eye - Medium Rare was phenomenal. I think everything it came with complemented it so well. My friends (coworkers) and I ordered some additional corn tortillas to eat with our rib eyes and man those were so good. Dessert menu was great and I forgot what it was called but the one I ordered was fantastic. I will say, dining here is worth the price. You get such great foods, great service, and the view is just gorgeous. Will definitely be coming back. When you're serving raw fish, cleanliness and food safety should be a top priority. This was a very disappointing experience, and I hope the restaurant takes sanitation and quality control much more seriously going forward.

One is a nice, sit-down restaurant. One is a coffee house. The third is the Pocket Pool and Bar. We found the service to be good, but we really didn't enjoy the drinks. The space was rather empty in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. We received coupons good for two welcome beverages at The Pocket when checking in at the resort. When we arrived at The Pocket after checking in but while waiting for our room to be ready, we found ourselves to be the only guests there. No reservations were needed. The clouds were out but it would soon be nice and sunny. We sat down and each ordered a zero proof cocktail. The ask was for something fruity and sweet. We ordered a variation of the Feeling Peachy, consisting of peach puree, citrus, mint, and bubbles. We did choose to give the bartender the freedom to make drinks that would be fruity and sweet as none of the drinks on the menu sounded like what we were feeling for. The bartender brought us drinks that we tried and decided we wouldn't have ordered if we didn't have vouchers for free drinks. As such, we acknowledged they weren't for us, though if we would have paid for them, we would have been disappointed. As such, I'd encourage anyone ordering drinks at The Pocket to stick with drinks on the menu. Speaking of the menu, the menu offers beach bites like smashed guacamole, craklin' buffalo wings, elote fries, quesadilla, sunset ceviche, and dirty nachos. The main event dishes include blackened Baja fish tacos, the wagyu double smash, millionaire's BLT, coastal Cali burrito, and Pacific poke. The balanced-ish menu items include pocket Caesar, the wedge, paradise bowl, and the Santorini. Treat Yourself dishes include cookie sando, assorted fresh fruit, and seasonal sorbet. Beverages include cocktails, wine, drafts, cans, zero proof. The Pocket is a surf-inspired bar with a view. There are televisions to watch sports games, and with the bar being part indoors and part outdoors, you can catch the nice weather or escape from it depending on if it is sunny or rainy. You can make a reservation on OpenTable. The bar hours are open daily from 11 AM to 7 PM. The kitchen is open Monday through Thursday from 12 noon to 6 PM, Friday and Saturday from 12 noon to 7:30 PM, and Sunday from 12 noon to 6 PM. Should we visit the Alila Maria Beach Resort Encinitas again, we may give The Pocket a try again but more for the atmosphere, good service, and perhaps some bites instead of drinks.
