Pizza is supposed to be a thin crust but is closer to dominos. Was really supposed to be Buffalo chicken pie for $20, but got a plain (priced at $13). Turkey burger is plain bad, and looks like some mystery meat. She tried it, I tried it, cat wouldn't come close. Got the fries wrong in the turkey burger. (Again from the app but they didn't want to listen) The burrata is just ugly, and unless there's a better way to package that for takeout, I'd maybe do something else. Enough can't be said with how good Val's has gotten over the last year since its renovation. The addition of a new chef has transformed the dining experience. The old favorites (pizza, esp. the Surf and Turf; garlic puffs and wings) are still very strong, but it is the new additions that I go back for time and again. If you know the old Val's this may shock you; but some of the best tuna (tuna bites, tuna salad) in the area can be found at Val's. The place is so laid back and inexpensive, you might be reluctant to try a dish like tuna as it takes a great chef not to ruin such a delicate ingredient, but I suggest you try the Tuna Bites app next time you are there. While I don't care for pork, I am told by multiple people that the pork chop is to die for. Don't let the reputation from years ago or the newly renovated and very modern atmosphere fool you; this place should be on your regular route when looking for a friendly, delicious, economical and fun place to eat and gather. What an outstanding transformation has been made since my last visit before covid. The renovations are amazing and contact precautions in place between diners. The salad was fantastic, service attentive but was a bit disappointed in the lobster pie. I would've thought there would be more lobster it was skimpy for the cost maybe my expectations were too high after seeing pictures posted but mine definitely was not like the photos. I just went to Val's this past weekend with my family to watch the Virginia Tech game. My parents just happened to stumble upon this bar a few weeks ago without knowing it was a Hokie spot! I loved the scene there - it's a little small, but they had plenty of TV's so I could watch the Virginia Tech game in addition to other college football games on. I got a buffalo chicken salad to eat, which was fairly boring, but my brother's margherita pizza was delish! We also got some wings - the mango tango was out of this world good! We ended up here by accident. We were trying to go somewhere in Sea Bright but we were about to literally run out of gas. My navigation said there was a gas station nearby. We were tight on time and Val's was right there, we had a party of eight & they could accommodate. My 8 year old son & friend's 8 year old daughter ordered the personal pizzas. The girl ate all but one piece and my son said it was the best pizza ever. My friends loved their appetizers- one had a shrimp one and I don't know what the other had but they were happy. However- my friend and ordered the "tender scallop risotto" special. First- it was only like 6p like ten min after we ordered, we were told they were out of risotto. I really hate when this happens. How do you have something as a special but it's gone by 6p? 8p, okay, I can see it. But 6p? And as soon as you're out of that, everyone on the waitstaff should be told before their party orders. Or something- because it's really disappointing when you were looking forward to it. I didn't know what to order instead so I just got penne with the scallops. Lucky I did because that's all I could eat. The scallops were hard as a rock. Definitely not "tender". Maybe I should've known not to order scallops at a tavern. But since it was a special I assumed they'd be great. I was also disappointed in the garlic puffs. "Puffs" denotes something light and airy to me. I LOVE garlic knots so I thought they'd be soft and chewy because they were also filled with cheese. They were slightly burnt and hard. The waitstaff was very friendly and we got our food in decent time. Down the shore on a Sunday evening in the summer, it's hard to find a place to eat that can quickly accommodate eight people so I was grateful they could do it. And my kid loved his food and I think my husband was also happy with his meal. Maybe being out of a special and not so great scallops was a fluke. I would try there again to see. *Update* - Kevin the manager wrote me a message which I appreciate. I haven't been back but I totally would try them again. His response was very nice, not defensive- which I really appreciate. He also explained that Sunday is their last day of specials - that's why they would be out of something at such an early time. The burger was very greasy and the grease dripped through the too soft roll. The cheese did not melt on the burger. My husband's dish was tasteless. I grew up across the street from Val's as a child so I'm sure whoever is running that place remembers me as I was hard to miss. 25 years later it is still overpriced, full of the same loudmouth locals and still has a softball team. One thing that is still good- the pizza. Nice and thin, not too much sauce, and great with beer. My mom would make me go over there every Friday night and pick a pie up from the kitchen. That's one memory I miss about Rumson as a whole. I have to give credit for consistency as this place is an institution. Keep on truckin'. read more

Val's, to me at least, is like two different restaurants in one. One side is the bar, which has a jukebox, darts, and an awesome staff. The other side is the restaurant, which while safe to bring kids and comes with decent food, is entirely run by buffoons. Overall I really like the place. Usually I'm just stopping for a couple beers and a bar pie, so take my word for what it's worth. They do have great pizzas...although I think the toppings are a bit steep in price. This place is a local gem! We recently Moved to the area and we were having a hard time finding a good pizza spot... And then there's was Val's... All the times we have come here we sit in the bar area... Bartenders are always friendly fast and professional.. The pizza here is amazing!!! This place is the prefect spot for a relaxing night out. The garlic puffs are really good and the wings are definitely a good way to start you meal. And did I mention the pizza is amazing? Not what it used to be! Time to look elsewhere. Ordered two chicken parm dinners and garlic knots for takeout. Went to pick it up and the order was wrong. Waited for them to fix this, which took a long time with barely an apology. Asked for extra sauce for the garlic knots, and they gave me a tiny container filled only 1/3 with sauce. Did not provide proper packaging to get the food home easily. Finally got home to find that they only give you one small piece of chicken per order (used to be two large size pieces). Two tiny pieces of bread were poorly wrapped and completely stale. (they used to give you to large pieces of warm bread) Chicken parm sauce was bland. I love the atmosphere here as it is staffed by very friendly people and it seems that most people that go there are regulars who will strike up a friendly conversation if you happen to sit next to them at the bar. From the owners to the wait staff to the people who regularly go here, nobody is shy and they all make you feel more than welcome to be there. They make some really great pizza here. My personal favorite is the Buffalo Chicken Pizza, but every once in a while I try something new like the Fra Diavolo pizza, the White pizza, Reuben pizza (which I think they make special on St Pattys Day), the Lobster pizza, and I've never been disappointed. They also have really good pasta dishes and give a really generous portion size. The wraps and burgers are also very delicious. Garlic knots are a must. read more

I am new to the area and went to Val's for the first time. I will never go back! The bartender was the rudest most obnoxious individual I have ever come across. Didn't smile once and took forever to ask us what we wanted. Never came back when our glasses were empty to find out if we wanted anything else. Never asked us if we wanted to see a menu. Any comment he did have when asked a question was an obnoxious answer. He went outside several times to smoke, even with a crowded bar and being the only bartender there. My wife and I have been going to Val's for about three years now. Hell when my wife gave birth to our daughter she requested Val's Pizza and non other. If that's not a testament to how good their pizza is, I don't know what is. A friendly establishment that boast a local crowd and great conversation during lunch at the bar, full dining room at dinner. Staf may seem stretch thin at times but do their damnedest to make you feel like you're a regular. Good variety of beers on tap and in bottle. Homemade sangria in the summer, which is a very nice addition to any bar. The lobster pie is to die for and Val's is the only place I have EVER had a decent Buffalo Chicken Pie. I could live off of both day in and day out. A welcome addition to the menu since the new owners have taken over is the garlic shrimp pizza. Just be warned, the garlic will stay with you! Not the best choice for a first date dinner! Rest of the menu is nothing too crazy, simple salads and sandwiches, dinner gets a bit more lavish. Never had a terrible meal at Val's. Night life varies, DJ, Band, jukebox it varies from night to night. The building has been recently renovated and they did a brilliant job bringing Val's in the 21st century. read more

Had a horrible experience here with two staff members being blatantly rude to us. One of them actually scanned us from head to toe before answering our request and then proceeded to slam the item down on our table and walk away. I have never had an experience like this one. They made it pretty clear that we were not welcome in the restaurant. Point taken, you don't need my money. What an awful way to treat people, regardless of your beliefs/values. Very disappointing. I called takeout for a large three cheese white pizza and was told to pick up at the bar because the takeout window wasn't open yet. When I got to the bar I waited for about 5 minutes until somebody finally helped me and told me to go to the takeout window. I told them I was told to go to the bar and therefore they proceeded to get the pizza for me. I was charged approximately $18. I never thought I would say this but this was the worse tasting pizza I ever had. The pizza tasted bland. I ended up throwing out most of the pizza. I will be staying away from pizza for a long time. Had the opportunity to have lunch at Val's Tavern this week. This wasn't my first time at Val's and surely won't be my last. I'm a south Jersey native and resident but when I go up north ( I hear ya Central Jersey ) this is my go to place. Val's is a historic landmark in Rumson and the renovations made the place even nicer. Loved the openness of the place as well as all the big screen tvs. In addition to having a great atmosphere the FOOD is outstanding! Lest just say I'm a picky eater. The menu has so much to offer and my biggest challenge was what to get. But how can I go all the way to Val's and not have the signature menu item ( Lobster Pizza ). The Lobster Pizza is off the hook! Seriously, it not good, it's Great! I am a Pizza connoisseur so to speak and this is Must Have Pizza. If you haven't had it, get there and order it, you won't be disappointed. Thin crust, quality tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese with large chunks of lobster. Absolutely delicious. Love it. Also had the Asian Sesame wings. Excellent. Great tasting and meaty. Wasn't fighting to find the meat if you know what I mean. My only regret is I didn't order food to take home. They informed me that the entrees don't include salad or side with a to go order but that if I paid extra they would add the salad and side..huh? This and the fact that the staff who answer the phone are rude and act like they are doing you a favor means no more of my business.
