It had been a minute since I had had an appropriate oil change. In all honesty, since moving to the DC Metro I don't drive as much as I used to. It had been nearly a year since my last oil change, but like I said, if I didn't put the miles on my vehicle, I wasn't going to do unnecessary maintenance on it either. However, I was about to do a trip home and I knew I was going to need to get this done. Through a school sale program I had purchased a coupon pack and I figured why not use it before it expires. I was coming this way to do some shopping before the trip home and I know that it will take no less than 20 minutes top to have my oil changed out. First, I missed the turn into the lot as I saw the 'Enter Here' sign after I had passed it. I made a quick turnaround and found myself in the lot. Pull around to the back of the building and right into a bay. There weren't many customers here at the time of my visit. I pull in, turn off my vehicle and the technicians go about there routine. They do the check of lights, filters, and levels. In doing this, they attempt to up sale me to include things that I have no intention of doing. I just wanted my oil changed and be on my way. I had just replaced my filters and they do that over the top, run their finger across the filter to make me think I need a new one. I remember purchasing the one you are fingering and installing it myself. Once they knew they weren't going to get anything else out of me, they went about and finished up the service. I went in to get my oil changed. The team that provided service were a well-oiled machine. (Pun intended.) They called out to each other what they were doing, every service was checked, double-checked, and checked again before departure. I'm aware of other "quick lube" service centers that didn't refill the oil in a car, creating engine failure, then not living up to the service failure. The multi-checks the team did provided 100% confidence they were doing a great job. They even told me about a couple of loose screws on the protection shield under the car at no charge. As expected, the team looks to upsell new filters, wipers, and additional [often expensive ;-) ] services, of course. Where the team fell short was in checking my cabin filter and lights. It was clear I did need a cabin filter, but the team ripped it out, so I had no choice but to replace it. That was like $50. Then they showed me the engine air filter and I quickly said 'no thank you' because it wasn't in the budget today. But my 2015 Ford Escape tells me every failure, even when a light is out. And it hasn't said that, until they checked my lights and told me I needed a new one. I have replaced my own bulbs for decades, and I had no warning light or notice until I was pulling out of the lot. Color me disappointed... This would be a 1-star review except for the polite nature of all the staff and the free-of-charge repair on the road shield. Thanks for a great job guys, but you cost me an extra $50 or so because my low beam was just fine before today according to the computer. Know what your car needs and doesn't before going in. They'll be sure to point out any problems. Stay aware of what they're looking at and don't be distracted because there'll be 3-5 people working in the car and its easy to lose track of what they're looking at when the primary guy is having you look at the computer screen... and giving instructions like lights on, lights off, etc. Just be aware. They seem like good guys, and did good work. I'm pretty sure I didn't need a new headlight, and I certainly didn't appreciate the way I had no choice to make regarding the cabin filter. read more

I really like the convenience of staying in your car while your oil is being changed. I started going to Valvoline during the Covid period and I continued using their services. I'm giving them a rate of 4 rather than 5 because they tried to convince me back in September that I needed a new battery right away. I declined since I had not had issues with my battery. Improperly put back on my under tray and then denied that it had anything to do with them after I returned immediately due to it dragging on the road. Manager was extremely dismissive and claimed they had video of the car's undercarriage in its previous state but refused to show me the video when I returned. Just not worth the headache of dealing with Michael the Manager. Attempted to submit a claim with their customer service and the area and market manager were too lazy to contact me resolute being told they would be reaching out. Instead the claim was denied by the awful store manager (had stated when filing the claim that the store manager was problematic and was told the area manager would be handling it). As a military family that just moved here and is very used to putting alot of miles on our vehicles between moves, Valvoline has been a true blessing. When you go there if you have Jeray as your representative just know you are in good hands. He truly is a good person and deserves a raise. I had just gotten back from a deployment and my wife hadn't changed her oil in over 5 months so I went to Valvoline. Jeray informed me that although it had been 5 months, she had only put a 1,000 miles on the car since and it did not need the service because they had previously replaced it with a full synthetic that was good for much longer. Went to this location on Feb 3rd to get a oil change and to be told by them that I had a really bad engine oil leak after they've completed the oil change. Why wasn't I told that before they started ?? NOW mind you this was the same location that I took it to back in Aug and there was nothing wrong with my car. So obviously when I went in Aug they didn't put the cross washer back on my car!! It's basically the gasket that goes between the screw and the oil pan!! I've been going to this location for over 10 years. The staff has changed but for years they did a good job overall. Over the last 2-3 years the place has absolutely tanked. The last two times I've come in to get my tires rotated I got a speech about how four-wheel-drive tires need to be balanced if they're rotated. So I have been going there for years. The service is friendly enough. After about a couple years, one of the guys noticed that my air filter hadn't been changed in years. It was extremely filthy. He asked if any had mentioned it and I said no. He said they are supposed to check every visit. Okay fine, I let it go. Last time I went, they didn't screw back the oil cap properly and just a few miles into my drive home my engine seized up because all the oil leaked out. I had to pay a few thousand dollars for a new engine. Whatever deals they may give there is not worth the cost of an engine. They had one job and they could not do it right. My main cs guy was Mike and he freaking deserves to be employee of the year there. Super patient, polite, and provided friendly conversation all while my satanic child was screaming. These guys are awesome! I'm just sitting in the car as they do the oil change. Simple and easy. There's no wait. I've just moved from California and trying to get an oil change was really difficult as most places wanted me to make an appt. It's just an oil change!! I was able to get my car into the shop right away and see what they do. They checked lights, brakes, top off fluid (included in the oil change), and Mike was really nice and professional. These people have a horrible attitude. They try to tell you that your car oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles with FULL synthetic. YEAH OK. They rushed through the oil change. They did not let the oil drain out long enough. I am missing two tire air caps because they can't even top off air without messing that up. What a wonderful and enjoyable experience! Don't think I've ever said that before after getting an oil change! Stopped in during my lunch break. They guarantee around 15 minutes but mine took longer because I was a first time customer. Ralph greeted me immediately. Explained their process and took all my information. We walked through preventative care and things that I could change in the way I use my car. Other employees chatted with me as they worked, which is nice because oh did I forget to mention? You get to stay in your car. What a treat. I don't have tons to say about this place besides it's great. They treat you like a real person. You don't feel like cattle (like you often do at Jiffy Lube), they are friendly and don't talk down to you. They explain what they're doing, as they do it. Excellent experience. This is a "drive-thru" service, you don't even get out of your car. I was in and out in 10 minutes. There was no pressure for additional parts or service. They recommended wipers, which I do need, but when I said no, there was no further conversation. While they pointed out the full synthetic oil service and its advantages, again, no pressure when I opted for the basic oil change. I will be using this location for my future oil changes. read more

I envy the positive experiences otherwise reported on this vendor but mine was not so. Pulled my '97 BMW into the pit and the assistant manager, Rob, was immediately helpful and attentive. As he was explaining the service schedule to me, another gentleman across the shop yelled something to him. Turns out this was the manager warning the assistant manager to warn me about the danger of damaging the rubber bushings holding the oil filter housing if too much torque is applied. I asked if this was a recommendation to not go through with the oil change, to which the manager replied that it was not, but that he would not take responsibility if they were damaged. Not the most confidence inspiring second impression... I then asked the assistant manager if he was aware of a secondary oil drain on this engine. He was not but passed the inquiry on to the manager, who responded "I don't know, that's why I don't like to work on those things..." It was pretty clear by then my business was not wanted, so I thanked Rob and backed out, disappointed, oil change-less, and wondering how so many people had had such a great experience. Kudos to Rob for his courtesy and professionalism in a situation not of his making; condolences to the manager for whatever mitigating factors caused him to be just the opposite. read more

"BEWARE" If you don't know your car, don't go here. I have a 2013 Scion XB that the factory specs conventional oil 0W-20 or 5W-20. The guy here told me the factory says full synthetic.....not. When I told him to put conventional 5W-20 he said they would not guarantee the oil change unless I used full Synthetic. After they were done I asked him not to put a sticker in my window since the 'change light' comes on at 5,000 miles after the reset. He then told me that I would have to change the oil at 3,000 miles because I used the conventional oil.....not. I also mentioned that when I purchased the car new they included 5 free oil changes every 5,000 miles and they used 5W-20 conventional oil each time. His answer......"they didn't use Synthethic because the dealer wanted to save money". I have had the Valvoline shop in Ellicott City change my oil many times and they "never" pushed the Synthetic. I follow the factory specs on this car and have had no issues. My question, " Are the guys pushing Synthetic to everyone because management has instructed them". So....now I'm concerned.....do they actually change the oil....the filter....?? I'll never go here again because now I can't trust them. Tony K. read more

I absolutely love this place! Why? Because they are super thorough and fast, that's why! Let me give you an example of what happens when a car pulls in to their bay.... As soon as you pull in, they'll of course ask what service is needed. Let's say that you want a simple oil change. They'll tell you what your options are in terms of price. The prices are also clearly displayed on the wall. Next they'll confirm all of your information or enter your information if you're new so that they'll have a record of what 's been done to your car on every visit. Also, if you want your receipt emailed to you, they can do that for you as well. Next, they're going to tell you that if you have any questions to please feel free to ask them as they go along. They'll check your front, rear, signal and brake lights. They'll check or ask you about your windshield wipers, check your air filter, check to see if the battery is fully charged, that all of your fluids are topped off and then check your tires to make sure that you have the recommended amount of air in each. They'll even ask you if you're okay with the amount of air that they're going to put in your tires before they put it in there and I haven't seen any other place do that! While they're doing all of this, they're shouting out everything that they're doing - don't be alarmed! LOL!!! This may seem pretty odd to most people but I'm guessing that they do this to make sure that 1) you know what they're doing, 2) they're concentrating on what they're doing and 3) if they miss something and someone hears it, they can remind them to do it. This is also important because doing something like forgetting to screw the oil back on and having their customers fly down the expressway with oil splattering is a nightmare so I appreciate them memorizing a checklist and consistently following it! They also work as a team, so while all of this is going on there's somebody underneath your car changing your oil, which means that it doesn't take them forever to finish all of this. You're pretty much in and out within 15 min. which means they have a healthy respect of other people's time. If you've always had great experiences with oil changes in the past, then this probably doesn't sound like a big deal. But as one who has experienced services at places like Jiffy Lube all the way to dealing with dealerships that claim to have "Quick oil change," lanes (only to find myself waiting 2 hours just to get one), I'm very appreciative of the service that I've received from Valvoline thus far! I've been there at least 5 times already and I've never been disappointed! So, if you're someone looking for a place that won't waste your time and you get the most for your money, this is the place to go! read more
