The restaurant is in a remodeled house just east of Pacific Avenue (SR7. There is plenty of parking available. It's a "comfortable" feeling restaurant even though it has standard older restaurant chairs. We arrived just before noon on a Sunday. The Sunday hours are only 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The menu on Sunday is limited and is a "rotating" menu. Once seated our server Darryl took our drink order. It did take a little while to get my coffee, but not a big deal. The owner came to our table to chat and a member of our party asked if she could have a meal without grits. The owner was confused and after a back and forth conversation brought a sample of her house made grits as a sample. The member of our party tried the grits and he "eyes lit up!" The grits were that good. Bottom line? The food was very good. Our server was attentive. Would we go back? Yes, but for dinner. I was very happy with my shrimp and grits. The shrimp could have been a bit more spicy for my liking, but were the right spice level for my wife. I am hoping jambalaya is on the menu in the evening along with red beans and rice. I just had a fantastic lunch at Velvet's Big Easy in Parkland. This place is a hidden gem! The owner and chef, Brenda was warm and hospitable and the food was beyond good! I had the red beans and rice with chicken and will be dreaming about it until I come back. My husband had catfish and grits and was instantly in love. He's very particular about catfish because his mother used to make it for him and it's the standard that everything else is held to. This is the first time I've ever seen him completely satisfied with catfish in the PNW. Needless to say, we will be back! The cashier was polite, but the owner came out and loudly scolded him, saying she told him the day before to change online orders to a one-hour wait and "the dasher will have to wait." I wasn't a dasher--I placed my own order. This was my third time trying this place, and it's been disappointing every time. Me and wife went here for the first time. The food was great it was well seasoned. The chef came out to the dining room and stopped at each table to talk to the customers. Very friendly staff , they answered all of our questions. The bright colors inside definitely had Mardi Gras influence as well as the paintings on the walls. The best part of the ambience is that the owner/chef for herself, came out and checked on us and asked what we thought she was very kind. Our server was not very descriptive and good on selling what we Should eat or suggesting I will say I was highly surprised that the pork chop meal was a dollar more than the seafood plate. The sizes of the sides were not big enough. In my opinion I wouldn't have liked to see different options of hot sauce besides just Tabasco now the dessert beignets in both of our opinion they were not cooked enough a little chew deli and overpriced. This is a small family owned restaurant that we really hope will succeed, the owner came around asking how we liked the food, we did, however the turn off was our waiter who lacked any knowledge of the menu and came across lackluster was a turn off. It's about time Tacoma got an amazing Cajun restaurant! I sent my boyfriend to make a to go order at Velvet's Big Easy on his way home this evening. I wasn't getting my hopes up as it was a little after 8 PM. Knowing that they close at 8:30 PM and were likely busy since they had live entertainment. My boyfriend said that the staff was extremely nice and apologetic on the wait time for the food even though the food did not take long. He said that the parking lot was packed and the restaurant was busy. All of the food was still fresh and hot when he came home. I ordered the deviled eggs for an appetizer. It came with four eggs, two with crab on top. The eggs were delicious, perfect yolk consistency not runny and slightly sweet. For my main entree I ordered the crawfish étouffée which was incredible. It was very flavorful/plenty of spices (not spicy) and they did not skimp on the crawfish meat! I also got two sides the collard greens which was seasoned well, also had a good amount of meat in it. The collard greens weren't dry. My second side was the macaroni and cheese. It was very cheesy, seasoned, tender noodles and not too greasy. Finally, for dessert I got the fried peach pie. It was comparable to a turnover. The crust was fried perfect, it wasn't burnt or soggy. There was the perfect amount of peach filling! I look forward to going back and trying more food. Disappointed but found some other items to try. We ordered a few things to try out their food. We tried collard greens, cornbread cakes, wings, fries, gumbo, mac n' cheese, deviled eggs. Collard greens were bitter and there was no sign of any meat nor did it taste like there had been. Cornbread arrived as 1 single, small, pancake that was overcooked and pricey. Chicken wings looked amazing but we're over-cooked and dry. Fries were good, seasoned. Gumbo.... had spice but just spice, lacking in flavor and was a bit on the bitter side. Mac n' cheese was not bad, nice and cheesy with a nice cheesy crusted top - but lacked seasoning to top off the flavor. Deviled eggs..... we will just pretend that we did not pay $9 for two eggs cut in half served as typical deviled eggs. Recently three friends and I ate at Velvet's Big Easy. We each ordered something different so we could share bites with each other and I'm so glad we did. The mac & cheese was creamy and velvety and delicious. You just can't beat comfort food. I really liked the red beans and rice. How can something so simple be so delicious? We were lucky enough to meet Velvet herself and she told us the secret ingredient. It is love! Lol well she must've put extra love in the rice and beans dish because I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. All the other dishes I tried were spot on as well. Try the Johnny cake!
