This is the worst dining experience we have ever had. Squid appetizer was frozen and freezer burned, sent it back. Fish and chips were heavy with grease sent it back. Baked cod was just as terrible, sent that back also. We told the very nice waitress we did not want to ay for food we couldn't eat. Owner DeMarco refused to come out of the kitchen and rectify the issues. Instead he called the police on us. Great way to run your business. DO NOT EAT HERE. As I write this I'm sick to my stomach. To start service is incredibly slow.... bit into my stuffed shrimp it was so sour I couldn't finish the first one. I attempted to eat the side of pasta the spaghetti was so hard you couldn't chew it. I never complain about my food but was concerned there was bad seafood for others. I was asked if I wanted anything else when they noticed my plate was barely touched at that point I wasn't trusting anything else and said no thank you. They charged me full price for my meal in which I couldn't even eat. Terrible service terrible food and terrible customer service can't say one good thing about the place. Also provided a 10% coupon given by our hotel and got $5 off a $78 bill.... so to my calculations they can't figure that out either.... stay away from this establishment eat any where else!!! read more

I was looking forward to a leisurely meal, but it was one delay after another. 10 minutes to find the hostess, 20 minutes to get a bottle of wine, an hour to get extra bread and finally receive our appetizers at the same time as the entrees. the meatballs and sausage were okay, the stuffed mushrooms were disappointing and tiny. the steak was pretty good, but I lost my appetite by that point. would not recommend. read more

This review is based on the experience we had listening to the Coastal Swing Band on a Thursday night in the banquet room downstairs. The food was ok, not awesome, but not bad. The music, however, was simply stunning. A full 21 musician swing band. The real deal. No cover! They play two Thursdays a month. Our waitress didn't tell us about the specials until we asked, she never asked us about drink refills, and didn't tell us about what the restaurant was out of until after we had ordered. We wanted a bottle of wine with dinner - about 5 minutes after our food had arrived she came back to tell us they were out of that wine. We ordered a different bottle - she came back about ten minutes later to tell us they were out of that one as well, at which point we were basically done eating and said forget it. This was definitely the worst dining experience I have ever had. My husband took me out for a nice birthday dinner. We ate here because it was next to the inn we were staying at for the night. I should have checked the reviews... Our table was sticky (due to using too much cleaner). I was willing to overlook that...our waiter took 20 minutes to bring our drinks. He probably said 5 words to us the entire time. Our meals were delivered by other staff and they were absolutely disgusting. I had a lobster special and it was waaaaay overcooked and piled with a mountain of dry sawdust stuffing. The potatoes were reheated, lumpy and dry and the vegetables appeared to be from a bag. I'm not picky but this was so bad I couldn't eat it. The worst part...it was $39! My husband's meal consisted of only 4 scallops and a pile of bland risotto. 4 scallops for $28?! When our meals arrived a waitress brought bread to the table next to us. We didn't realize bread was an option because no one offered it to us during the 45 minutes we had sat there before our meals arrived. We spoke to the assistant manager and shares our concerns. She offered me another meal but I didn't want to wait. She offered us dessert (im assuming she meant on the house but never specified). We declined and asked for the check. The waiter brought it and said nothing! no apologies or anything...and it was for the full amount. We paid and left. I have frequented this restaurant every Wednesday night, for the past four summers. Their Wednesday night all you can eat pasta bar is very good. Unfortunately, the service we received was so terrible that my group will never attend this restaurant again. After overcharging us by over $100 on our initial check, it took the manager over 45 minutes to get the amount correct. After this fiasco, we were promised a free meal the next week. When we showed up the next week, they charged us anyways. I asked to speak with the owner and the manager refused. They just lost a loyal group of customers, because of their terrible service. read more

Have to trim original review, it doesn't fit! My wife and I looked forward to our Friday night "date night". I was sick with a cold, but I insisted we go out. We decided on Venice as it usually has pretty good food on busy nights. Also, it is near Misquamicut beach where we were going to take a walk afterwards. We ate at the bar because that's just what we usually like to do. She had a wine and I had a club soda. We spent a good deal of time trying to figure out what to have for dinner. I asked the bartender, Katie, if I could get the ravioli (17 dollars) with a side of salmon (no price listed but a side of chicken or 4 meatballs was 4 dollars). She said, "sure, no problem." The pasta was a little heavy but overall it was a good meal. The company was excellent of course. We had a good time. Then I got the check. What should have been about a 50 dollar meal had somehow become a 65 dollar check. Not only had I been charged 17 dollars for the ravioli, but I was charged 18 dollars for the salmon. Now I want you to understand, this was a 4-5 ounce piece of salmon. It was cooked nicely but it was definitely not worth 18 dollars with no sides or dressed up presentation. I'd have been okay paying 8 dollars extra on top of the meal price of my ravioli, but definitely not the price of a whole additional meal. I talked to Katie. She told me the manager wasn't going to do anything about it. I was shocked. I told her to get him anyway for me. It took him a solid 5 minutes to come. I used to work in the restaurant business. I know that a manager should make it his priority to talk with upset customers. I did not feel like a priority. I explained the situation to him. I explained how a side of 4 meatballs, chicken, scallops or shrimp is 4 dollars when added to a pasta meal according to the menu. I showed how there was no written price for adding a piece of salmon to the meal. He explained how it is 4 dollars for 1 scallop or 1 shrimp. I had not realized this at the time and admitted such, but that is truly beside the point as salmon is not listed as a side for a meal. He then showed me another section of the menu that has salmon listed at 18 dollars for a dinner. I then told him that the bartender should have said something along the lines of "Just so you know, the side is going to be 18 dollars", more than the meal itself. The meal altogether cost more than the seafood fra diavolo which has lobster in it! The manager said his hands were tied and he refused to do anything about it. He told me, "This comes from the top" and "The owner won't let me do anything about it." He proceeded to walk away from me as I was talking to him. I paid the bill and left a 10% tip. I always leave a 25% tip, but this just wasn't right and the bartender should have said something to me. My wife and I left the restaurant. I was ticked, but I was determined not to let it get me down. On the way home I went to get gas, but my card was declined. I looked up my account and found Venice Restaurant had double charged me. I was pissed.I drove back to the restaurant and asked for the manager. He took his time again but I wasn't being as polite as before. He saw me glaring at him and decided he better come over. I explained and showed him with my phone and banking app the double charge. He went behind the bar for a few minutes with the bartender to look over their charges. He came back and told me only one charge had been submitted. He said an extra wine was initially charged, but this simply wasn't true. When I initially discussed the cost of the meal with the manager the extra wine was not on the bill. I never gave my credit card until AFTER discussing the bill with the manager. There was no extra wine on the bill to be taken off, ever. I believe they double charged me and when I came in they reversed the second charge and made up the whole "extra wine" story. I again explained my disappointment in the restaurant. The manager told me "I understand" and "I agree". I replied, "No you don't or you would have done something about it." I explained to him how he was extremely rude in walking away as I was talking to him. I explained to him how my mother had her wedding their 7 years ago. I explained how I have eaten there many times and never will again. I explained how I was going to blog and review the crap out of this. The manager just smiled and didn't offer any recompense whatsoever. I said "Now you just stand there." He just stared at me, a twinkle in his eye. I continued, "Look at you, you're getting a kick out of this." I ended the night with, "You're a pleasant fellow. Have a nice night." I will never eat here again and I don't recommend you do either. No one should give business to a restaurant that treats its LOYAL customers so poorly. Also, the issue with two charges to my account is something every wary consumer should be cognizant of. Remembering good food & reasonable prices, we went there tonight with a friend. Two of us ordered the seared tuna & one prime rib. The tuna was old, Grey & terrible. Prime rib was fair... The bill was a shocker! $32 apiece for the terrible tuna put us on the floor. When the owner came over to say hello, hubby told him bad meal w/ an outrageous price. The Venice Restaurant is an interesting place. Upscale dining on the first floor, banquet room on the second floor, and the SkyBox Lounge on the third floor. I go to the SkyBox 1-2 times a month to get my dinner, and every visit has always been exceptional. The SkyBox is promoted as a sports bar, but it's really a very laid back, local hangout that might be the best kept secret in Westerly. Yes, there are several TVs and a pool table, and people do go there to watch a game. For me, I go for the food and the opportunity to talk with some of the locals. An excellent sandwich and a cup of coffee sets me back about $11. The place can get crowded, particularly after a banquet lets out. The crowd is usually older. People come by to have a drink and look out the windows at the ocean in the distance. The staff is polite and friendly. It's been my observation that people drink in moderation - probably a good thing, because walking down three flights of twisting stairs might be difficult if you're above the legal limit. (There is an elevator, but I never use it.). Good food, good coffee, excellent staff, nice location, good prices, good customers. But I don't think success will spoil the SkyBox Lounge - let's hope not. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. Oysters were not cleaned and came out covered in seaweed. Some were broken in half and we were eating more shells than oyster. Calamari was not crispy and some were covered with oil. My husband ordered the baked shrimp, they were overcooked and dry. The side vegetables definitely came from a frozen bag and the mashed potatoes a box. My "special" was a stuffed salmon, which was not actually stuffed just a pile of mush on top and the salmon was also overcooked. The risotto side had no flavor, I couldn't even finish one bite. This is an interesting review to write as I have absolutely nothing positive to write about this restaurant. I have not written a review like this for many years. We called in advance to make a reservation and to be sure we could bring a bottle of wine ( and pay a corkage charge). We arrived around 5:30 and were promptly seated and told a waitress would be right with us. There was a waitress waiting on 3 other tables but there was some type of drama going on. She would not make eye contact with us ( even though she had to walk by our table to get to the other 3). While waiting my wife commented on the old musty smell of the dining room. After waiting 10 minutes I got up to ask for help and noticed a big meeting in progress at the POS terminal. The drama queen waitress was there with lots of arm waving talking to another lady in a suit and lastly, there was a young lady with an apron who looked like a busser. The "busser" removed the busser apron and came over and said she was our waitress. She noticed our bottle of wine and asked if we wanted her to open it. (I'm not sure what she expected as an answer). She went off and got a corkscrew and began fighting with the bottle. She had no idea how to open it. She ended up breaking the cork and I took the corkscrew and finished opening the bottle. She brought up wine glasses both of which had some crud that we scraped off with our knives while awaiting new glasses. She arrived back with 2 water glasses which we gladly accepted ( remember we have been sitting for about 25 minutes at this point). I asked if there were any specials. She said she had been working a wedding downstairs and did not know about the specials but would find out. She came back and took our orders ( Prime rid very rare for my wife and veal parmigiana for me). My wife's Prime Rib arrived medium rare to medium. She took 2 bites and said it tasted bad and pushed it away. My veal arrived at the same time. It also tasted funny and after two or 3 bites I could not eat it anymore. We paid the bill and went home. Both of us were sick within 3 hours. So, in summary, the building stunk, the dinnerware was dirty, the service was terrible, and the food was bad. Service was very pleasant. That is the only good thing I can say. The atmosphere is dated. Food was mediocre at best. My daughter enjoyed her salad with steak tips. The calamari was too light in color, even when I asked for it to be browned more. Mozzarella sticks looked like the frozen grocery store brand. The eggplant appetizer was tasty but cold. The restaurant is on the fine side but the entry way appeals to be part of something else like a hotel. The menu selection was small. The Caesar salad was large based on the price and anticipated appetizer. The shrimp scampi lacked flavor. Other than the shrimp it was bland. We had our Thanksgiving dinner this year at Venice. The food was delicious, the service acceptable. We had a large party of 17 people and overall the service handled it well but it wasn't overly busy due to it being Thanksgiving and 12noon. The only complaint would be the lack in attention to drinks. Both my husband and I needed refills and ended up finally having to ask for them when she brought the check because we didn't see her for 20 mins before that. Otherwise attentive and friendly staff. The food was very good, well seasoned turkey, great mashed potatoes and stuffing. The green beans were seasoned and cooked to perfections, still a crisp bite to them. All the food was just really great, no complaints there at all. I am looking forward to another visit to try some of their regular dishes, I bet it will be very good. When I go to the north end in Boston, (I'm from MA originally) and I ordered vodka pasta it was large, creamy and I had enough to take home for another meal. I can best serve the readers by warning them to stay away. On my first and last visit to this restaurant I was served water and wine in dirty glasses. Upon discovery I was provided clean glasses and expected to pour the dirty wine into the clean glass. The broccoli rabe was tasteless and the grated cheese I requested arrived after I was finished. Stuffed mushrooms were tiny, dry and had no seafood in the stuffing. We ordered my sons burger plain (specified just meat and bun) and medium-rare. Burger arrived with cheese, lettuce and tomato and when we said something, the guy said he would take the cheese off! What??!! New burger arrived 15-20 minutes later like a hockey puck!! What an unexpected surprise our trip to the Venice Restaurant was! We booked a room at the neighboring Winnepeg Inn for a little romantic getaway this summer, and decided to try our luck at the Venice, even though it is sometimes risky to eat at a "hotel" restaurant. We were very pleased that the food was better than expected, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the prices were reasonable for the quality of food. I got a special: the lobster scampi, and my boyfriend got the Thursday steak special. I thought I would be getting the equivalent of shrimp scampi, only with some lobster meat instead, but I got SO MUCH MORE. A huge plate of linguini in a garlic butter sauce came out with not only huge chunks of lobster, a jumbo shrimp, and four scallops, but also a WHOLE STEAMED LOBSTER cracked in half on the plate. It was very tasty and the presentation was beautiful! The Steak special was a three course soup/salad, steak with baked potato and veggies, and a cannoli for dessert. All courses were VERY good- the steak was so tender that you could cut it with a butter knife! The meal was topped off with a generous portion of fresh baked bread and a garlic olive oil to dip it in. They have half a dozen beers on tap, a full wine list, several enticing mixed drinks, and a dessert/coffee list as well. Prices are fair- entrees were between $15-$35. Our waitress was extremely nice and friendly, and the staff across the restaurant were professional and outgoing. We had a great time and would absolutely return again! We are from Chicago and we know good Italian food. Venice is suburb! Their ribeye, pasta, eggplant app and grilled romaine is best in RI! You won't be disappointed with their cuisine. I gave Venice three tries, and felt generous because one of those dinners was a function and sometimes restaurants can have a little trouble with events that they can handle easily with regular dinner service. No, Venice is just a mediocre restaurant. The service is good, but the food is fair to poor. It is a shame because the ambiance is just fine. The best experience was the pasta bar where I was giving instructions on ingredients and cooking... The worst was when I had to send my dinner back because the overwhelming flavor was of chemicals. The waiter returned (with my plate, no less) to tell me that there were capers in the dish and the chef thought that perhaps I was unfamiliar with their flavor and mistook it for a bad chemical taste. Good grief! Not only unprofessional, but just bad business.. not to mention a bad meal. I wanted to like Venice. It is near my home. It has a great sky-bar and view. But the food does not live up to the atmosphere or location. Go and have a drink then have dinner someplace else. read more

We celebrated my in-law's anniversary at Venice. Right away, I knew this was most likely going to be our location. Maria was so easy to work with and always got back to me in a timely fashion. She was there to answer every little question I had. The Florentine Room is a perfect setting and size for a dinner party. When I arrived to bring some decorations, the room was set up perfectly and they were there to take care of all the details. I just had to bring a few finishing touches to personalize it to our family. The food selection for a buffet dinner was excellent. They were easy to work with as far as swapping out different entree choices. I'm actually not always a fan of buffets but I certainly went up more than once! Our guests remarked how good the food was, especially the tortellini carbonara and chicken Parmesan. The stuffed sole was certainly a hit, too. We even had a few passed hors d'oeuvres which were a great touch. I recommend the bruschetta for sure. The pricing couldn't be beat for all the great meal choices we had. The wait staff present the night of the party was excellent! They were attentive and made sure everyone was taken care of. They made the entire night run smoothly. We worried about nothing and were able to enjoy the company of our family and friends. They helped wrap up the night and clean up was a breeze. Absolutely the best prime in in RI or Connecticut-bar none. Christy the bartender upstairs runs the show and makes you feel pampered and important. Buck a shuck oysters are fantastic and fresh. Salmon is to die for-my wife's usual choice. The only prime rib close to it is Rathskeller but this is superior at Venice. read more
