I am proud to brag that I have known the two sisters who own Via Veneto for years, and know of their love and pride and incredible skill for what they do... one is the kitchen expert and the other is the customer expert, and between them and their daughters bringing the new generation to the patrons never fail to give anyone who eats there, and regardless of what they eat, a culinary orgasm. Neighborhood gem. Via Veneto is a cozy space with attentive staff. The fried calamari appetizer we ordered came pleasingly non-breaded and included a delicious red sauce and lemon. Generous portion. The first time we tried this place I called in an order and when I went to pick it up, they claimed that they lost it. Fast forward several years and we decided to give it another try during lunch. I got the fettuccini Bolognese. The sauce had a metallic taste and the noodles were so thin they almost disintegrated. It was bizarre and gross. I may not have left so hungry if they had offered some bread for the table but I guess that is my fault since I didn't get up from my table and track down the waiter. read more

We really like Via Veneto. It is a neighborhood hangout -- and is owned by serious Italians, speaking fluent Italian. Which in Alexandria is unheard of. There were two times last summer when the service was bad, they were short handed and our favorite waitress was out on maternity leave. Otherwise, we have always had good experience with service. The pasta and pizza is very good, I usually go with lasagna or whatever seafood special they have. read more

Nonetheless, Via Veneto's mistakes went hand-in-hand with my prediction of us waiting over an hour for our entrees; one of which was taken to-go (Alfredo w/shrimp), and was served with chicken instead. Found this place completely accidentally and went in Sunday for my birthday dinner. Everything was noteworthy, from the appetizers (a clam and tomato sauce dish for me and a fried mozzarella dish for my husband) through the main course (I had the most perfect bacon and mushroom pizza and my husband the fettuccine alfredo with chicken). I did order the tiramisu for dessert and it seemed a bit old and unfresh in texture, but it had a good taste and I didn't take any stars away for that since it might just be me being picky. Warning: this isn't your usual takeout pizza place! The large pizza is so small! I've seen on the "Alexandria curbside dining" fb page that their pizzas are highly recommended so we gave it a shot for pizza night and were so disappointed when we picked up our "large" cheese - it's barely 12 inches. A typical large is surely enough for 2 people and can usually feed more but this was more personal sized. Via Veneto often has specials, such as dinner for two with a bottle of wine, on certain nights of the week. Thus, in the past, we have been motivated to visit for special occasions that happened to fall on Tuesday or Wednesday. We have been occasional customers of this place for several years. This review is for a weekend visit a few months ago. The food, wine, and coffee are fine. Paying full menu price for everything, we had high expectations of a good meal and an enjoyable visit. What stood out was mediocre service, although there were very few customers. The waitress commented multiple times within our hearing that she was ready to get the customers out and go home. We did not overstay our visit or make demands. We did have to wait a little while for the waitress to pick up our payment, which we set out as soon as the bill came. Even as the same waitress was commenting that she was ready to get everyone home, she delayed our departure by making us wait. The owner (I presume) sits at the same table every time we visit. At many restaurants, an owner may circulate or make a point of greeting patrons, but not here. I believe that Via Veneto has forgotten the role of the customer in their establishment. The atmosphere leaves much to be desired. The place is overdue for redecorating, or at least painting over the water stains. I don't feel like I received the value that I paid for. Wally says that he is not inclined to visit again. We can have good food and wine at home. We go out for a pleasant atmosphere and friendly service, which we did not find at Via Veneto. read more

The pasta is amazing and the staff is wonderful. We used to eat here often but slowed down a few years back. We're back in there for carryout about once a week now. The Penne alla Lenzi ROCKS!!! It seems like this restaurant mostly either gets really bad reviews or really good ones. Perhaps that means that the restaurant is not very consistent? I don't know, but my personal experience was particularly positive. Unlike others, I got a very warm welcome when my mom and I visited the place. It wasn't even the employees that greeted us, but a group of locals that apparently come to the restaurant once a week to relax and drink wine. They talked to us like we were neighbors and were some of the most friendly people I've met in Virginia. Aside from the welcome committee, the server who showed us to our seats seemed slightly confused (perhaps he didn't know English?), and the waitress was very friendly. I thought that the food was yummy, too. The bread was definitely not the best in the world, but the fried zucchini was delicious, as was the main dish. It seemed to be made with love (if I remember correctly, the pasta was home-made) and more like a home-cooked meal than a gourmet dinner. We were referred by friends; otherwise this is a small little restaurant tucked into a old strip mall where you would never just drop in. Aren't these always the best places? Very small but the food is high quality. We had the tortellini and the marinara with peppers. Good sized portions requiring go boxes (made a good lunch the next day) and well seasoned. Right on the money about the bread and the salad. Add to that that the house wine is a little worse then Carlo Rossi and that the waitstaff wasn't friendly (in our case) and you have a complete waste of $70. Although our first time dining here, we were impressed that everyone is treated as family. The staff seemed to know everyone there, it's as if Via Veneto is the Cheers of Italian restaurants in Alexandria. The food was very good. I had the Vitello alla Francese, my wife the Lasagna. The service was wonderful, they took good care of us. If you are ever in the area of Mount Vernon, this is the place to go. read more

The food is good. So good that I keep going back, really wanting to like this place, but I just can't, because of the service. To put it mildly, the service is really bad. As other reviewers have noted, this is a neighborhood place, and there are a lot of regulars. The wait staff prefers to spend its time gossiping with the regulars instead of helping the newbies. Maybe this is some form of hazing? But the food is good. To mitigate the bad service, we considered doing take out. That's when we discovered the other downside to Via Veneto: it is spendy for what it is. For some reason, we didn't notice this when we were sitting in the restaurant (probably because by the time the bill came, we were so happy to be able to leave), but once we pulled up the menu to order take out, we were really astounded by the prices. A few months ago I came home to find my sister and her friend about a bottle deep into some great vino. I decided to join in and one thing led to another...we got pretty buzzed (get your mind out of the gutters). In our buzzed state we were looking to order some good food to compliment the wine we had. Seeing as the only restaurants that deliver to our area are pretty shit, we found Via Veneto and decided to carry-out. Let me tell you, that shit hit the spot! My sister ordered the Mille Foglie Alla Bolognese, her friend ordered the Penne Alla Lenzi (she asked for chicken instead of Italian sausage, and they had no problem making that substitution), and I ordered Tortellini Alla Crema. Although we went a little later than the twenty minutes we were told it would be ready (still buzzed), everything was still hot. The quality of the pasta and the ingredients were fresh and hearty; I really enjoyed how creamy the Tortellini was. I didn't try enough of the other dishes to really get a opinion on them, but the girls enjoyed their dishes overall. Oh, and the bread that came with the food was delicious. I am really curious as to what it is called, so if anyone reading this list know's, hook a bro up. Or I'll just have to ask them myself, because I definitely plan on ordering from Vio Veneto Ristorante Italiano in the future. read more

I got the shrimp and pasta in a red seafood sauce. The portion was huge and came with salad and bread. The pasta was sooooo good.

Love love the food here. I find that it is better not to have large selection on the menu, you get better quality and fresh food. This is a family business and for the past 4-5 yrs we always receive a good, reasonable service ( we don't like waiter to check on us every 5 mins and ask how is everything going, if my food suck I will tell you and if your food is good we'll be your regular customer). As for the price I thought it is ok, not too expensive or cheap. 1 order feed 2-3 people in our family ( may be we just ate smaller portion than usual). Two things they can improve on is bread and the container for TO GO. Otherwise food taste good just reminded me about my time staying in Italy as authentic as it can be. read more

We get two things from here and it's always carry out. 1) The pizza. It's good. Not Bugsy's good but close. 2) Spaghetti Carbonarra. It's rich and creamy and reasonable. The place is usually full on weekends...clientelle leans towards the elder side. I think it gets a lot of regulars. read more

I come here for the takeout pizza and it is what my 5 star rating is based on. It is excellent-- among the best in Alexandria and I'm including the fancy, trendy places that have sprung up in Old Town for that assessment. San Marzano tomatoes, a thin crust that is always perfectly cooked, a very garlicky (?) sauce, and their meatball topping is the best! The results are sometimes variable, but rarely is the pizza less than very good. Monday's may be the best bet. We are very fortunate to have something like this in the area. Update: So I've made my way through their sandwich selection and have to say that it is quite dismal. The only one worth anything is the meatball. The steak and cheese is made with steak-ums and is barely edible. The Italian sub is completely forgettable. The sausage and pepper is bland. The fries that come with their sandwiches is mediocre, and I generally approve of most fried carb products. A complete waste of time sandwich-wise, this place is. Go to the Italian Deli or Roseinas if you need one at lunchtime. Update 2/14: This is the first time I have dined in. We ordered the lasagna and mussels with linguini. The lasagna was okay and the pasta was homemade. The mussels were also acceptable, but the linguini was not made in house. I typically make my own pasta and it was obvious. The bread was stale. Very stale. All in all, I would avoid this place for pasta. A La Lucia is not that far and offers vastly superior pasta and sauces. I continue to favor this place for their excellent pizza, but otherwise, this is no better than a common 3 star homestyle Italian restaurant. read more

This restaurant is local, I live very close but don't come often their food has always been great, but today their service was horrid! I was in a group and i specifically said "Large Cheese Pizza" and pointed to it on the menu she repeated it and wrote it down, but u guess she didn't put the order in. They also got my cousin's order wrong, she asked for Penne and was given spaghetti; they fixed her order pretty quickly though. Everyone got their food but me. My mom asked the waitress who said she never took the order. I finally got my food 20 minutes after everyone else the food was good, but the wait shouldn't have happened. read more

Hidden gem...down Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria...Again , tasty genuine New York Style pizza..and that clam appetizer was so..good I had to dip my bread in the oil & juices! Via veneto is one of the few restaurants I have been going to my whole life and will continue to for the rest of it. I try to visit at least three times a year and everytime I do it is exactly how I remember, which is perfect. My favorite thing to get is the spaghetti and fetachini and mix together the sauces, it is what heaven taste like! When you walk in you instantly are greeted by this family atmosphere, it is such a cozy small restaurant where you can see the cook in the back making the pasta, the waiter refilling drinks, and the two sisters who own the place sitting at the same table in the back that where I have seen them sit for the past 25 years. Make sure you're ready for the whole experience, get some wine, bread apps (Clams Casino) an entree, dessert, and espresso. and keep in mind all the entrees come with a side salad and side of spaghetti! so you'll need your appetite! read more

Due to COVID we ordered carry-out. The tortellini is to die for! Seriously the most delicious I've ever had. The capresse was super fresh and the perfect appetizer. We didn't have a good experience on our first attempt, but we will try again in hopes it will be better next time. We ordered the antipasta misto appetizer to start and the lettuce was spoiled underneath. Not a little brown on the edges, but rotting in some areas. The meat was like rolled lunch meat instead of fresh italian cured meats. We came specifically for the mussels, but they were out of them and veal. My wife ordered a clam pasta dish with red sauce, but received the dish with white wine sauce. I wanted to see if it was possible to switch, but the waitress did not return to our table for the entire meal. After 30 minutes, she finally came back and asked if we wanted dessert. We asked for the bill, which she delivered promptly and didn't return for another 20 minutes. I finally went to the bar to pay my bill. I'm willing to chalk up the poor food experience to being an off night, but the service was bad. This is a family restaurant that I want to support, but I hope they pay more attention to the finer details next time. read more
