The staff is EXCELLENT. The owner is HORRIBLE. He's mean to customers and staff. We sat outside and he came out to tell us to move our seats because "this is New York" and he'll get a ticket if we're blocking the sidewalk. If he thought we were tourists, he should have politely explained why he needed us to move. I am not a tourist and live VERY close; the likelihood of a cop ticketing him is slim to none. The only time I see cops on the block at night is if extra security is needed at the Beacon. read more

Viand Café is a diner located on West 75 St. & Broadway. I haven't eaten here yet because I just went in to have a cup of Hot Chocolate. The staff was polite, the service was the usual thing when a place isn't too busy & the place was simply decorated in American diner style. However, I don't think I'll be having hot chocolate here again. It was kind of watery & tasted like something you could make at home out of a packet. I went there recently for a quick meal before going to see a play later on. The food was good, I had a tuna salad sandwich (comes with cole slaw and pickle) and a Diet Coke with lemon. I went early evening on a weeknight and had my choice of seats. I do think they were a little overly soliticous in terms of coming over and seeing if I wanted anything else. Also, the busboy at one point came over and started to almost take my plate (I still had some cole slaw leftover and wanted to finish it), and if I recall, the server did too. Both times I had to tell them that I was still working on it. I'm still giving them a decent rating though because overall it was a nice place to eat on my own and I didn't have any trouble getting the food brought to me quickly - or getting the check when I needed it. Came into this cafe before our show started at the theatre , obtained something lite/light to eat and drink. The appetizer chicken wings were good and the cocktails were okay. Prosecco and a screwdriver was ordered. You can't mess up a Prosecco , but the screwdriver didn't have an ounce of a screw or a driver inside that cup. Just a tall glass of orange juice. We stopped in for pre theatre drinks. The place was buzzing with diners, lots of laughing and jovial talking. The waiters were all engaged with the patrons, which was nice to see. We managed to get the last two bar stools. We ordered a manhattan & a cosmopolitan, both were delicious and reasonably priced for the Upper West Side. We got a first hand view of how the staff worked together. The bar & the space behind was small, which had a way into the kitchen. It was super busy with waiters, the bar tender and the owner coming & going, they all helped each other, smiling and laughing. We had two rounds before having to leave to catch our show. I told the owner that he should be commended for his staff & how they work together. Next time, we'll eat there, instead of eating closer to Penn Station, like we did tonight. Viand Cafe is perfect if you are attending anything at the Beacon Theatre, it's right up the street. read more

This is the quintessential New York diner style restaurant. Good grief, I forgot to look if they had an egg cream on the menu! Yes, it is that type of place. Came with a friend, and it was a very good experience. They have a variety of seating, booths, tables, and outdoor seating, too. We opted for an indoor table. The menu is what you'd expect with many deli type options. I absolutely had to have a corned beef on rye bread sandwich. It came with a kosher pickle, a small container of deli style coleslaw, and a small bowl of potato salad ($21.). That, and a glass of ice tea in a traditional fountain glass w/straw, and I was quite satisfied. The sandwich was delicious with a heaping serving of very good corned beef with all the fixings to fill it out. I found the coleslaw and potato salad is what is to be expected, nothing special yet good. Service was competent and provided everything in a timely manner. If you want an authentic New York diner experience, this is the place. read more

The food is average, not better than you can find in a hundred places in NYC. However, my biggest issue was the service. My husband, baby and I visited today; the waiters and host were polite and attentive, but an older man, who appeared to be the manager, immediately gave us a look when we walked in - I'm guessing because of our baby who apparently committed the crime of not being old enough to exist in public - and kept asking my husband whether he was finished even though there were plenty of empty tables for him to offer other patrons. I will never return to this place. After YEARS of loyalty, I was given the wrong meal (which happens all the time) and got NO apology---my boyfriend's meal was finished when my proper meal arrived. The waitress did not apologize for messing up my order; and the manager didn't either. NO discount or other comp offered. I wrote and called, was given an "apology" and told that maybe they would've given me a discount the next time I go (there is no next time). Viand Diner aka Viand Cafe at this location is in the Beacon Hotel close to the Beacon Theater. I lived nearby for many years and I still visit this neighborhood as much as I am able. I find all the Viand locations are below my expectations. It's overpriced. The service is old school which is costly. It's okay when I'm are nearby for a show or movie. I'm not going out of my way to eat here. I know it's popular with some people, I have to be honest. This is not the Viand I remember from years ago when it was on East 86th Street! I visited this place for brunch today, Sunday. My friend and I were seated promptly, but I incorrectly chose a table for two that was not very well stabilized. A couple across from my table started to leave the place, and we decided to take the their table (after asking one of the servers for her okay). Unfortunately, one of the male servers was kind of perturbed by our move, although I explained that the other table was unstable. My point is: the server should have been more sympathetic for my situation. Other than this, the place is nice and the food was delicious, and the ambiance was excellent. Buss boy didn't bother moving any of the table condiments when he cleaned and reset the tables. It was better than I expected for a coffee shop. It has a more upscale feel now. (Just the bathroom still felt old). We sat outside which is lovely to do in nice weather. A nice waiter giving someone their check waved us into the outdoor dining shed saying it was cooler there and would be better if it rained ( which it did later on).
