A few years ago, I found this random restaurant in the middle of a residential neighborhood when my area became hippersterized. Completely not looking forward to the hipsters/yupsters finding this place!!! The food here is really yummy! Some of it is beyond yum and some is decently good. A couple of my favorite dish (ABOVE YUMMY) includes: - Sai Ooa Laotian Sausage ($3 each - 6" long, 1.25"diameter) - Nam Kao ($8.95) - fried rice, with super crunchy fried rice bits mixed with meat and coconut. Its served with a side of fresh lettuce and mint. My go-to meal!!! I just love that crunch and the AROMA!!! wowza!~ - Yellow Curry ($10.50) - Wow!! How the hell did they make the sauce so rich in flavor and spices?? Decent (still yummy, but I have another restaurant I like this better at) - Phad Kee Mow (Drunken Noodle $8.95) - Its tasty, don't get me wrong. This place was great - really pungent Laotian food. My sister, cousin and I ordered the following: -papaya salad Laos style: green papaya, peppers, lime juice, garlic, and tomatoes tossed in spicy sauce with dried shrimp. Holy moly, this was so pungent. They serve it with a side of noodles, so do yourself a favor, and mixed in those noodles with this dish because you'll be needing it. -sai ooa - baked Laotian sausage ($3): This was good, but not my favorite version. The casing didn't have a good snap, but in any case, it was a steal at 3 bucks. -nam kao ($7.95): deep fried rice mixed with pork, coconut, and sautéed in special sauce. It's served with peanuts, lettuce, and minced leaves. Probably one of the best version of this dish I've ever had - real good, robust flavors. -kao soy ($7.95): big rice noodles topped with ground pork and sautéed with chili paste. This was a little offsetting because I am used to the Thai creamy curry noodles version. It wasn't bad, but again, it took a little while to get acclimated to the flavors. I would order this again for good measure. From what I have discovered about Laotian food - there are two varieties - one that is Thai influenced and the other being Cambodian influenced. With so many Vietnamese and Thai restaurants dotting the Bay Area's landscape, it's always a treat to come across other Southeast Asian cuisines. Really, why aren't there more Laotian/Malaysian/Singaporean/Indonesian restaurants out there?? Although more homely/neighborhood joint than trendy, Vientian Café is no less of a destination spot. I kept calling Vientian Cafe "Venetian Cafe," and I was so set on the name that my immediate thought upon seeing the actual name sign outside was "Wait, why did they spell their own restaurant name wrong..?" Oh man, I blame it on the lack of sleep this past week. This restaurant isn't located in the best of neighborhoods, but the interior is decently well-kept and spacious. Some yelpers have said that it used to be a house that was converted into a restaurant, and it does have that kind of feel. This place is a great casual eatery for authentic southeast Asian food. The neighborhood around this restaurant is mostly residential so if you're not careful you may miss it, but it's well worth the trip! The flavors of the food are bold, and well spiced! I love the green papaya salad, but be careful because it is super spicy (and I like spicy food). The Lao sausage is also absolutely delicious, their order is actually more like half a sausage so for the full sausage get a double order which is still very reasonable. If you've never had Lao sausage you're in for a treat because it is one of the most flavorful sausages you will find with strong, fresh lemongrass flavor! You can order take out or eat in their relaxed dining area with family tables sporting all of your sauce and utensil needs. Vientian Cafe has been on my Bookmark list for ages . So Today I thought I would fix that. I jumped into the Weekend Whip tuned in a little Keisha and rolled to Oak town. As Vientian is in the Hood I left my Man jewelry at home and brought my Mission Bag just in case. I rolled down Brook dale and was amazed how the neighborhood is more run down than it used to be. i used to live around there in the Old days. Luckily I was able to grab a spot right in front of Vientian. I rolled in and grabbed a table that had direct view of my Whip. The Waitress dropped of a Menu . I ordered Chicken Skewers for an Appetizer and Seafood Sauteed in Chili with Bamboo Shoots and Jalapenos. I also ordered a Thai Ice Tea . 20 Minutes later I had my Chicken Skewers it came with a Chili dipping sauce. It was Tasty. Next came my Seafood Dish and a Bowl of Steamed Rice . The Seafood dish was a little disappointing , It was more Bamboo Shoots and sliced Peppers than Seafood. It had 2 Mussels ,4 pieces of Squid and 4 Shrimps. It really wasn't that Spicy either. They do take Visa , MasterCard and Discover Yay!!! When I left there was a Couple Of Thug Life looking dudes hanging outside ,but they didn't bother me . It's difficult for me say which Lao/Thai restaurant I like more. Vientian Cafe or Champa Garden? The truth is I like them both and for different reasons. I've been to Champa Garden many more times, but Vietian Cafe is quickly gaining a spot in my heart. I enjoy Champa Garden's lively atmosphere. But due to its growing popularity, it takes more effort and the need to make it an occasion just to go there. Vientian Cafe, on the other hand, is casual. If I have a sudden craving for Laotian food, I know I can count on Vientian Cafe. The food at Vientian Cafe is homey and delicious. Their baked Laotian sausage is a must! I see people eating it with sticky rice. I like to wrap it in lettuce. Their soup noodles are also delicious. I've had the Kao Soy (flat noodles with ground pork in chili paste broth) and the Kao Poun (coconut curry vermicelli noodles with chicken and pork blood). Both so flavorful and gooood! Neighborhood is not my favorite - although there is always parking - but food is tasty, helathy and cheap. Their lunch prices rock! Also, the ladies are super friendly and always up to a little chat (if the place is not too busy). They have Laotian, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine and I like them all. So I told him I'm new to the Eastbay and wanted to know what his favorite restaurant in Oakland was. He said "Vientian Cafe." So I was excited to try'em out, plus the wifey loves Thai Food. As other yelpers mentioned this restaurant is in a weird location. Not really bad but an occasional crackhead may stroll by. Walking in, I love Thai decor. The fascination with elephants and other art work is cool. The waitress was really sweet and helpful. The menu was quite extensive, more variety than most Thai Restaurants. But we settled on: Nam Ko: 2 stars this is a appetizer with crunchy rice and some type of vermicelli. I thought over all it was bland and maybe I'm just not used to the combination of textures. But I wouldn't order it again, even though as I looked at other tables around me they were ordering the Nam Ko, so what do I know right? Pad Kee Mao: 1 Star once again I found it bland and wasn't what I was expecting. Catfish red curry: 2 stars. probably my favorite Thai dish, they failed to make it with the variety of ingredients and complex flavors that make me love red curry dishes. Angel Wings: 5 stars. The wings are on point here. The sweet and savory wings are the one shining star. Delicious wings. ALthough the AngeL wings were crispy on the outside and cooked perfectLy on the inside, the sticky icky sauce tasted simpLy of sweet and sour sauce that you can buy in a bottLe at your typicaL Asian grocery store. My new apartment doesn't have a ton of dining options within walking distance -- MacArthur near 35th is not even close to an equal to Temescal/Piedmont/Rockridge for dining. I was pretty psyched to see Vientian Cafe come up on my Yelp app and went there the first week I moved to the neighborhood. I've eaten their food about 4 times so far -- and I'm not sold on setting Vientian as my "go to" neighborhood eatery. The food is satisfactory but being vegan - I guess I'm limited in my options, and when you say "no fish sauce" - you end up with steamed vegetables here (just like most standard American restaurants). Many of the vegetable dishes are just variations on one thing: tofu with basil and a smattering of some other ingredients, no outstanding flavors or seasoning (even when asked for "spicy"). The fried tofu is crazy overfried -- but not entirely inedible. They do use super fresh ingredients -- the peppers and broccoli were not overcooked/soggy, and the rice was also well done (not overcooked). Service is ...distracted. Whether you eat in or take out, it's hard to get a sense that you're anywhere but interrupting an emergency call center. If you eat there -- and like eating there - stay away from the bathrooms. It takes you past an open "walk in" cooler area where uncovered meat and other food products are sitting out and the kitchen is kind of scary looking. I'm still looking for my new neighborhood "go to" spot... vegan friendly with fresh (hopefully organic!) ingredients and FLAVOR! Any tips on how to order at Vientian appreciated. read more

I'm giving this place 2 stars because the food was delicious, although today I called from work to make reservations for my daughters birthday, the lady who answered heard me when I first called the moment I said 16 people she acted like she didn't hear me. All you had to do was say you can't accommodate that many people instead of being rude. I called back a few times and she said hello 3x and hung up, then she called my phone and just kept hanging up. I had my coworker call and ask a question, she answered the question then when he asked about the reservation she hung up. Very rude! The idea is to wrap it all up in the lettuce w some mint, i dip my lil piece of roll in the sauce, in the nuts, don't forget the cilantro, and quite literally shove it into your mouth hole. Sooo good. Crispy crunch from the fresh lettuce and lightly fried wrapper, salty fishy tang from the sauce, herbs brightening each bite from the cilantro. Pad Thai w shrimp which they substituted an item out for me which i really appreciate. Steamed rice and some lao lemongrass sausage. They slice and make crispy the sausage which is filled with lemongrass flavor. It's a beautiful mix of unctuous mouth feel from the fried fat casing of the sausage but the lemongrass prevents it from becoming too heavy. I kept it simple this time but i love the curries and LARB here it is so good i just didn't order any to include in the photos for this review. Highly recommended and believe, highly sought after. DEFINITELY GET THE NAM KAO. Me and my friends did family style, and this dish was definitely our favorite! Our waiter was new, but he was still really nice and made sure everything was okay. Recently visited my cousin who was an instructor at Mills College and decided on trying popular ethnic cuisines which we normally aren't able to find in the South Bay. Like some of the businesses around here, Vientain Cafe looks like a converted house turned restaurant. The place feels quaint and homey and appears to be popular with the locals. We wanted to try food that is unfamiliar to us with a couple of favorites picked out by the waitress. *Nam Kao - Lao crispy rice salad or Lao fried rice ball salad. *Pad Soy or Pad Soi - A soup made with wide rice noodles, coarsely chopped pork, tomatoes, fermented soy beans, chillies, shallots, and garlic, then topped with pork rind, bean sprouts, chopped scallions, and chopped cilantro. *Sai Ooa or Sai Uoa - Baked Laotian sausage made from coarsely chopped fatty pork seasoned with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, shallots, cilantro, chillies, garlic, salt and fish sauce. *Mok Pa - Catfish, lemongrass, dill, onion, garlic, kaffir lime leaves steamed in banana leaf. Although ll of the dishes have their own unique flavors loaded with aromatic spices and herbs, the two dishes that stood out for me was the mok pa and nam kao. I love Thai food and this little cafe is so amazing. The food is so delicious. We ordered B.B.Q. PORK SPARE RIBS $ 8.5, PAPAYA SALAD (Thai Style) 7.95(small) and PHAD THAI w/ chicken $8.95. During covid-19, we have been supporting our local businesses but also trying to make our way down the Chronicle's Top 100 List. Last night we ventured out to Oakland for a take out. It was 40 minutes there and back without traffic and it was SO WORTH IT! Oh my goodness was the food good. We ordered: big noodle soup, papaya salad Thai style, rice salad, sausage, and Thai Iced Tea. Everything tasted like heaven. The rice salad was so unique and delicious. It had crunchiness and softness and it wrapped so nicely in a fresh piece of lettuce. The papaya salad was the perfect tartness and they wrapped it so it did not get soggy. The big noodle soup was with a pork based broth. We asked for no spice which still had a slight level of spice that was delicious.Husband reported that the sausage was tasty. Let me start off by saying that I really did not care for the food that I ordered here. My mother and I love to eat Thai food so decided to check this place out. Ive driven past this place millions of times. I actually never thought about checking it out until today, due to it being nearby. Once I got near the restaurant, I noticed that we were about to go to the restaurant that we've seen for years but never tried. Walked in, it has seating to your left and right and even though it seems small inside, its not stuffy. It took forever for our order to be taken by the gentleman and it wasn't busy to me. Finally he comes. We order a Large Thai iced tea ( which was a large qty), shrimp pad thai, green curry chicken and shrimp fried rice. The pad thai was different. It was reddish along with tail on shrimps. Have you ever had to remove the tails in pad Thai? My fingers were now gross. The shrimp fried rice was crunchy and so discouraging. It was not even finished. The green curry dish doesn't even come with rice. You have to purchase a side of rice. So I guess i was supposed to eat it like soup. I'm hesitant to tell others about this place because I don't want it to become even more popular that it already is. But, this is the best hole-in-the-wall for Thai food! It is one of Oakland's hidden gem, literally. Word on the street is that this place use to be a house where a couple sold food out of. Makes sense if you see where it's located.
