Stopped into VIP Coffee & Cake Shop a few weeks ago for the first time. My family and I were next door ordering some dim sum and I suddenly had a craving for some egg tarts. By chance, I stopped into VIP Coffee & Cake Shop to see if they may have any solely for the convenience of their location. To my surprise they had a lot out on their display and so much more. Definitely have been sleeping on this spot. VIP Coffee & Cake Shop is a cafe located on Broadway in Chinatown. Their menu offers a mix of savory options and desserts. There is ample seating for customers to dine in (many were dining in during my visit), although several patrons while I was in the restaurant were ordering to go as well. Definitely a popular spot. Service was prompt. Prices on the menu were affordable and portions of the plates for those dining in were generous. As mentioned, we came for egg tarts and they definitely did not disappoint. I have been coming to VIP since I was a child and their baked pork chop rice tastes exactly the same as it did 20 years ago. It has always been a go-to comfort food for me and a staple in my family whenever we head out to Chinatown. One thing I have noticed has changed with this dish is that the pork chop they use now has become much thinner with a lot of fat. Other than that, their sauce tastes just the same. Service itself can be a hit or miss. They are often quite busy and we usually just go in and sit down wherever a table is empty and wait until the host notices us. Because they do not have a time limit, you will often find patrons hanging out in there for hours on end as the restaurant doubles down as a local favorite hangout. It can be a bit loud as well. This is the first time I am reviewing a restaurant. I had an EXTREMELY TERRIBLE experience at VIP Coffee and Cake Shop. The customer service was terrible from start to finish, and on top of that, we were pressured to tip more despite the horrible food and service, which felt very inappropriate. The cleanliness of this place was shocking. The shop itself was filthy--there appeared to be mold on the walls, the bathrooms were covered in urine, and there was even debris floating in the water. To make matters worse, we were initially given plates that clearly had leftovers from the previous customer. When we asked for clean replacements, we were handed two more plates that were also used, with visible stains. The utensils were no better, covered in smudges and fingerprints. On top of all of this, we witnessed a man being mocked and discriminated against for not speaking Chinese. The workers clearly understood English but chose to do nothing about the situation, which was upsetting and unacceptable. Between the unsanitary conditions, poor service, forced tipping, and lack of basic respect for customers, I would strongly advise others to avoid this place. read more

Been here since I was a kid in the 90s and the taste brings back memories. I almost feel like I'm giving up one of my city secrets, but this is the best hot milk tea in the city. I honestly love all their HK cafe styled plates but this time, I got the baked pork chop over rice. Next time, I'm getting either the macaroni soup or club sandwich with fries. This place is hard to get to by car, so plan on taking public transportation, or bike it, like I did. They were very nice about letting me bring my bike in. Enjoy this one Yelp. The food was great, specially the iced milk tea, which was worth coming back to. The baked pork chop was not what I expected, not much meat but definitely a lot of rice which was good. We ordered scrambled eggs with shrimp but in return we received shrimp fried rice which was a bit disappointing. This might be my favorite place ever! Not sure what the lower reviews are about, but I personally find that VIP hits the classic canto diner right on the mark! The prices are very very affordable in the city, the food is solid and comes out hot, and the service is great! Low key...this place has really good egg tarts. A true Chinatown IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW kind of place. In my opinion, the egg tarts here are better than that other popular store that starts with "G" and ends in "Bakery". Entering, you'll find what seems like a normal restaurant with booths for seating. A lot of locals (green flag number 1). If you turn to your right you'll see a couple bakery items, including the egg tarts. The attendant behind the counter is not super friendly but very efficient (green flag number 2) You then will order your egg tarts and hot Hong Kong milk tea. A beautiful and perfect combo! The hot milk tea here is delicious as well and perfectly warmed my soul. For the tart, the egg custard is THICK, smooth, not overly sweet. The crust is perfectly crispy and crunchy - sturdy enough to hold the custard but not too thick that it would overwhelm the filling. Not too greasy! A 10/10 from me. Note that like a lot of older, classic Chinatown restaurants, the atmosphere is kind of dilapidated and unimpressive. The restrooms are dirty and there are no photo opportunities. What I'm trying to say is, if you're a tourist and looking for a place to oooh and ahhh at, this is not it. Since the pandemic, it has been easier to get seating at this once packed coffee shop. Their "premier" booth seating is now easily available ;) My go to at VIP is their HK Milk Tea (hot or cold), and their VIP sandwich. This place is definitely dated and for the old timers, but clean and reasonably comfortable. Service is what you expect from a local, inexpensive local coffee shop... meaning, don't expect much! lol You should be quick to place your order, and be aware enough that you will need to leave after finishing your meal IF there is a line. Super hole in the wall and unassuming, but as an HK local, I would say this is the closest resemblance to food in HK. The macaroni was super comforting, and perfect for a rainy day. VIP Coffee Shop has been on my list of restaurants to revisit for a long time. They close at 6pm and I can't make it to Chinatown until after 6pm on weekdays. I had a day off today and it took over 25 minutes for them to make my baked pork chops spaghetti $14 at 11am. There's this single waitress that handles the dining room orders, phone orders, bus the tables and the bakery take out counter. Obviously they are short handed. The pork chop spaghetti tasted OK. It was slightly burnt on top to infuse the tomato taste onto the dish. It would have been nice if there were cheese or chopped onions in there. It was missing that wow factor. I am quite particular about this specific dish because I grew up eating authentic HK cafe items & places can never seem to get it right. VIP is AMAZING. they truly have the right recipe for the sauce. 100/10. It's also so cheap for the big portions. I also love the beef tongue baked spaghetti. makes me miss Hong Kong so much. FOOD: VIP Sandwich with fries $8.50 (3/5) they give a generous amount of fries which I love ! it was those thick cuts and crunchy! however, the sandwich was off even though it had egg, ham, tomato, and lettuce, it had no flavoring. They def need to put some spread on that. Baked pork chops over rice (2.8/5) it looked so good from the table next to us, so we decided to order this as well. they give two pork chops and ALOT OF RICE (will post picture) so the portion was completely off. With that much rice, the tomato flavor rice was low. The pork chops weren't bad. But if you LOVE RICE then you may want to order this.
