For the past year, I have visited 3 Chinatown bakeries to try different items. So far, AA Bakery wins in the Chinese egg custard tart selection. Perfectly crispy, layered crust with silky, just-right sweetness eggy (yet light) filling. Highly recommend this place for their Chinese egg tarts. Huge selection of cakes and pastries, too. We got 8 egg tarts, 2 Napoleons, one sachima, one sponge cake -- all for only $30.50. Fantastic value for great quality treats! (PS. Feels like a hole in the wall. I randomly dropped by here to pick up an egg tart and a wife cake. I didn't even eat them until the next morning and they still tasted like fresh. Wow I was impressed and regretted not getting more to go. It's nice not to have to wait in line or wonder whether a bakery will be open just because it's famous. AA Bakery - my all time favorite egg tart spot growing up in Chinatown This place on Stockton has been my go to since I was a kid and I was hoping to gatekeep it, but was convinced by friends to share my love of this establishment as the rightful king for the best egg tarts in SF Chinatown. The custard has that strong sweet egg flavor I love, super rich and not watered down at all. It also has this beautiful glossy exterior that when surrounded by the crust gives it a jewel like appearance. The crust is super layered and flaky which makes it delicious but also messy so you definitely need a napkin or you'll end up with crumbs everywhere. I always skip the dim sum here and go straight for the classic Chinese bakery treats. They have a large variety and everything is exceptional but the egg tart is by far my favorite item hands down. I'm glad this spot hasn't gone viral yet so there's usually no crazy long lines. Most of the time I can just walk in and order without waiting forever. The vibe is pure old school Chinatown with Chinese uncles and aunties sipping coffee and gossiping in the corners. Late afternoons are even better if you're a bargain hunter because they discount the day's products. Nothing fancy just a true classic neighborhood bakery that's stayed consistent for years. Everything I got was super yummy. We tried the pineapple red bean bun was amazing. The mango cake could've been better but still really good. Another mango and coconut red bean jelly? It is like a spherical, but yeah, overly cool dessert that's small. That was really good. Prices for mid 2026 are still pretty darn good. I wish I lived here so I can come here all the time but also glad I don't so I don't over eat. Definitely would return. Definitely recommend. Just try all the things- that's what I did and I didn't regret buying any of them!! The service is decent too! They speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese and maybe more but that's what I heard in the shop. There was a steady stream of people coming in in the middle of the afternoon. You can sit there and eat, which is what we did. We ate all five things we got very quickly because it was so delicious. I wanted to try their egg tart. It was not too sweet and it was tasty but a bit flakey like some in SF. They also have inside some Japanese cheesecake along with sweet mango desserts and cakes with a cherry on top. They also have savory treats like corn buns and traditional Mexican buns. This a great place for all to enjoy some delicious treats for Chinese New Year's. Randomly came across AA Bakery during a Saturday morning Chinatown run. We were hitting a few of our usual spots when I noticed AA Bakery tucked along Stockton Street. Despite the weekend rush, there was barely a line -- a pleasant surprise given how packed Chinatown usually gets. Inside, trays of assorted Cantonese buns, cookies, pastries, and cakes were all neatly lined up and ready to go. - Dan Tat (Egg Tart) -- silky, custardy center with a light jiggle; crust was flaky though slightly thick, still comforting and classic. - Rousong Bao (Pork Floss Bun) -- the pork floss almost melts into the bun like a glaze, adding a subtle sweetness that balances perfectly with the salty, savory floss. In the back, a few Cantonese aunties and uncles were gathered around, playing mahjong and sipping Hong Kong milk tea -- almost straight out of a scene from Interior Chinatown. Overall, AA Bakery is a charming and underrated gem among the many bakeries and dim sum takeout spots in SF Chinatown. I'll be back to try more of their baos and HK-style milk tea. read more

This is a tiny little Asian bakery. The street it's on is super busy and has absolutely no parking. Pretty common problem for sf, especially Chinatown. Insane quality baked pork buns. The bun is fluffy yet chewy. The pork filling is rich, salty and sweet. Their mango pudding is super creamy and custard like. AA has become my go-to spot for pineapple buns because of the convenient location in Chinatown, efficient service, and good quality. Every time I go, The line moves quickly, and I don't have to wait that long to get the goods. The buns are super cheap at just $1.50 each, and the credit card minimum spend is only $5, which is the lowest I've seen. The buns retain their freshness too even if left in the small plastic bags for a day or two at room temperature. I do wish the serving bags were a bit bigger or that they provided a takeout bag with handles, but it's better for the environment that they don't, and it's on me to be prepared and bring a tote next time. read more

I went there on a Saturday after dim sum. It was probably around 12:30pm. I was surprised I didn't have to wait a long time. They have 2 display cases. The first had cakes and the second pastries, with a sales counter in between. The cakes were beautiful and the pastries looked delicious. I went there for the baked char siu bao. I ordered a half dozen for myself. For my companions I ordered pastries. They told me they were good. I didn't have a bao until the next day. The bread was light and fluffy. There was quite a bit of filling. The filling was good but I have had better. My only problem was they use cupcake paper and the paper stuck to the bao. But I wouldn't hesitate getting them again. When I lived in San Francisco, 30 yrs ago, I always had difficulty telling shopkeepers what I wanted. Yes, there was a language barrier. I didn't have that problem this time. This is hands down one of the best bakeries I have been to within china town. I got the matcha cheese cake and the egg desert as well and it was so savory and tasty. The picture that I attached below is the matcha and it was so creamy. It has an authentic matcha taste. They have so many other pastries there that are delicious that I'd recommend everyone to try. This is one the only bakery I would go to in Chinatown. Our go to was the pineapple bun with custard, regular pineapple bun, egg tart worth coming back to, the cocktail bun was great too. The service was interesting make sure you know what you want before ordering or else you'll get skipped. Been coming here for years when in town. It is about a 20 min walk one way (40 min round trip) from the business district down town and probably about 30-40 from Fisherman's Warf. The walk is safe during the day, but would take an uber at night. The people who work here are generally friendly, but they are extremely prejudiced. Pretty sure they are Cantonese like many in this area. Not sure if they all speak Mandarin, but think at least some do. The bakery items are hit and miss. The more traditional Chinese items are usually pretty good. Some of the more Americanized items are sometimes dried out--maybe since their clientele is mostly traditional Chinese and maybe few tourists some of the Americanized stuff sits a long time and gets old???? The surrounding China town is typically dirty and sometimes homeless people drift over from the near by Tenderloin district that you want to avoid or only uber to and from. The shop itself is very small with limited seating and reasonably clean. It says a lot that many of the other bakeries on the area have either closed or changed ownership, but these guys are still here. For traditional items like Dan ta (egg tarts) etc. they are definitely worth a try. Some of the Americanized stuff if good too, but as said, the quality varies on that. Some other places nearby offer bigger dan ta or different styles, so check around and either try several or find the one you prefer. Sorry, no pics this visit. read more

My dad used to buy checkerboard cake rolls when I was younger, so I had really fond memories growing up of AA Bakery & Cafe. Unfortunately, from my most recent visit, I don't think their bakery items are quite as good as I remember. The buns here are still delicious, but they give off "par-baked" and "a few days old." Still not a bad bakery to visit while in Chinatown, but I do prefer others (e.g. Yummy Bakery & Cafe). read more

So glad we stumbled upon this bakery. We stopped in on a mid day morning and there were a few locals sitting at tables and another tourist couple ahead of us. They were recommended a cheesecake so we got one as well. Along with a pineapple bun and another pastry. The pineapple has a nice sugary coating but had coconut which was unexpected. The cheesecake was a Japanese cheesecake so it was extremely light and fluffy. Some of the things I've bought include good egg tart (egg yolk/milk), coconut red bean pudding, the three different pineapple buns: plain, red bean, custard, coconut/peanut mochi. However the one thing I bought this time was their flaked char siu bao. The first bite I can already something was definitely off, the sauce tasted sour like on gone bad and has a weird yellow had a weird yellow texture in the filling definitely not normal. I'm not really a Chinatown bakery connoisseur, but I do know a good bakery when I enter one. You can just tell because the baked goods don't look like they've been sitting there all day. I was feeling peckish after a dental appointment, and with no cavities, I felt entitled to something sweet. I never plan to come to AA Bakery but always end up here for some reason. I have a really hard time differentiating all the Chinatown bakeries some each other but I generally enjoy AA Bakery & their staff more than other places. I like their wide variety of mooncakes (still only very classic and traditional flavors) and they were the only place open late enough for me to do a last minute mooncake run for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Their egg tarts are yummy but they are extremely soft and don't travel well even in a plastic to-go container. They also aren't the cheapest egg tarts in SF Chinatown. Decided to visit multiple bakeries during a Sunday afternoon and I can confidently say AA is slept on compared to the other highly reviewed bakeries in Chinatown with long lines. There was no line and we ordered an egg tart, milk tart, and the women behind the counter also recommended the pineapple bbq pork bun when we're originally going to order the regular pork bun so we took her recommendation. The pineapple pork bun is quite tasty with a satisfying crunch from the topping. The tarts have a rich, buttery and flaky crust which complements the fillings well. I'll definitely stop by here for egg tarts next time I visit Chinatown. read more

Stopped by AA Bakery to try their egg custard tarts. The bakery is small with a bunch of customers crowding in and jockeying for position. Unfortunately there is no order to the line inside and I was at a disadvantage as I didn't speak Chinese. Some additional help arrived behind the counter and I managed to get some attention and secured an egg custard tart. Egg custard tart - $1.90 - these tarts were a lot bigger than ones I had earlier in the day at a dim sun restaurant. They were also half the price. The crust was flakey, buttery and crispy. It was perfect and filled with so much egg custard. It was very good but I felt the taste of the custard was a little too eggy. Overall this was a very good egg tart, just slightly too eggy. Pricing is reasonable. They do however have to work on their line management. read more
