Another thing that earns them 5 stars is that they have the right fish sauces for every dish! You know how much we Vietnamese love our dipping sauces! Goi Vit (duck salad) is a must order! It comes with a dressing to mix in and ginger fish sauce for dipping the duck. Banh beo - fresh out of the steamer every time and topped with fresh made dry ground shrimps (not those flaky shrimps you typically see on party trays). Banh bot loc - I would say it's the best I've ever eaten aside from my mom's homemade one. The filling is perfectly seasoned. Banh nam - I don't usually eat this but I thought it was pretty good. When it's time to go out, and I wanna show off what San Jose is all about food-wise, I look no further than this restaurant just a mile or two from my house. Why?... 1. Ever had Chinese stinky tofu?--well... if you haven't, all I can say is that it would be the equivalent of eating hamburgers all your life but never having eaten fries. Seriously. You need stinky tofu. You'll live longer and be smarter. Your awareness of smells and sound will be through the roof... Alright anyway, unlike the Chinese version, the Vietnamese one is rotted further to the point that they can dissolve it into their soup. Came back here to try their duck because, well, the place has the word duck in its name. For $3 more I just got the large duck salad (goi vit) although it's actually a misnomer if you want a real salad, which is what I was hankering for. I wanted rau ram, and a few other Vietnamese veggies that I don't know what it's called in English because I was feeling nostalgic but it's just cabbage. Ordered the nuoc dua tuoi (fresh coconut juice) thinking its actually fresh but it was obviously sweetened, probably from a can and then with fresh pieces of coconut put into the drink. I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be so if you don't like things sweetened this isn't actually "fresh coconut" juice straight from the source in the way Starbucks isn't actually coffee to the coffee purist I suppose. I still would only come here for their Banh bot loc and Banh nam if you like that stuff because they're solid dishes but their duck is not as flavorful as say roast duck. You have to add their nuoc mam for flavor in the goi, which was not what I was expecting. Party in tow ordered pho ga and he seemed to be satisfied with its broth and presentation. I'll let him review what his real thoughts are over yelp :) It's still cash only and staff was friendly but aren't gonna refill your water. The small duck salad is a good portion for $11. I've never tried banh nam before, and it was fun to try something new. I love their broth. I got a side order of phan mien mang, and it was far from a side order portion. I'm a fan of the bamboo shoots and giblets, as well as the clear noodles. A cute little gem in little Saigon area that I was very happy I stumbled upon! I was greeted with the cutest and very happy staff which made me feel so warm inside already. The menu specializes in duck dishes and even has an enlarged photo of a duck in the front of the menu which I thought was funny and cute. My boyfriend and I got the banh beo, Bbh, and chao goi vit. The Banh beo was freakin amazing!! So good I couldn't stop eating them and was sad when they were all gone! The BBH was good but not amazing, and the chao goi vit was good, but I was a bit disappointed that they've already mixed all the ingredients in there for us. We were also not given the same similar size duck pieces as in all the photos on yelp, and had little slithers instead. Great place to eat for Vietnamese congee that comes with Vietnamese chicken or duck salad . My friend introduced this restaurant to me and she said it was ine of her favorite restaurants to get congee. It's a smaller restaurant and the typical Vietnamese type of mom and pop shop by but the food is so good. I got the small Vietnamese chicken salad and it comes with this sweet dipping fish sauce which is important to eat with the meal because that's what makes it unique. We drove by "Vit Dong Que" Vietnamese restaurant many times in the past, but have not tried it until today. The duck salad and porridge were amazing. The duck was fresh and tender and the porridge was very tasty. For the two of us, we ordered a small duck salad, a side of duck porridge and a chicken noodle soup and that were plenty of food for us. We also ordered the green tea, which they added a slice of ginger so it was very refreshing. The service was excellent as well. CASH ONLY! This is my go to place for chicken porridge and duck salad. It's located in the corner of the grand century plaza but sectioned off so the parking lot is small. They sell banh beo as well. I love that when I order to go, they always have my food ready within 10-15 minutes for pick up. Restaurant is a fairly good size for a mom and pop type of shop. So if you have a huge party, you might wanna call and give them a heads up. Their chicken porridge has chicken liver which is good. You can also order it with chicken pieces. Their duck salad has a good portion of duck pieces and a lot of salad mix which is mostly cabbage and banana flower. For the duck salad, they give you fish sauce and a ginger sauce to pour over it. They sell dishes individually or part of a combo. The menu is simply, very easy to read. Sometimes when I'm ordering for a big group, they have the big party trays. If I'm not sure how much I should buy, I would ask them. They never try to upsell me and tell me to order extra. One time, the person on the phone told me I might be over ordering and should downsize my order unless I wanted leftovers. Overall, reasonable price for a good portion of food. I was here because they serve shrimp egg rolls. I orderes shaken beef, shrimp egg rolls, bahn beo and a duck noodle soups. And man, I was DISAPPOINTED... Bahn beo never came, though I ordered with shrimp egg rolls as soon as I got seated. The shrimp egg rolls (5pcs) are thick and hard, and stuffed with carrots and onion. Very bland... The entrees had no flavor, the rice of the shaken beef was red but very bland (thought was tomato flavor but no) and dried. The beef cubes were so small and just sweet... I absolutely loved the banh beo, but because I've never had it before, I really couldn't begin to compare it to others. Had this place bookmarked for awhile now & finally got a chance to sample their duck items. Ordered banh beo, shrimp rolls & small duck salad as appetizer. For our main, we order the duck noodle in fermented tofu soup, a bowl each :) When our orders were taken, the guy already warned us it's too much food for the 2 of us but we knowingly acknowledged the fact Banh beo was good.. slightly on the thinner side. We wolfed those down in a jiffy. Duck salad was next. It's basically steamed duck on a bed of cabbage slaw. The slaw had some rauram & slivers of banana palm flowers. The guy told us to pour the more watery sauce on the slaw but not the duck. We were supposed to eat the duck by dipping it into the thicker sauce which had some minced ginger in it. It reminded me of the hainanese chili sauce but sweeter. The combo was a bomb. I can actually eat this as my meal! Fried shrimp rolls came out piping hot. Another tasty item but I prefer the salad while my friend polished off the rest of the shrimp rolls. The duck noodle soup was served while we were still savoring the salad. The soup was kind of 'muddy' from the fermented tofu & taro but smells heavenly. I had to try a sip even though i was still working on the salad. I was in love :) It reminded me of the Chinese red wine ginger chicken without the wine. However, both the noodles (egg noodles in one & vermicelli in mine) were slightly mushy. Another pleasant experience here. The banh beo is super delicious, especially with their nuoc mam cham. It's very soft and slightly chewy as it should be. Shrimp is savory. I would like a bit more hanh phi (fried onion) and mo hanh (green onion/scallion oil), but that's just my preference. The banh beo is pretty great already. The bun bo Hue is alright, it isn't the best. I wouldn't recommend ordering it here. Don't be fooled by the sugar cane drink poster! It looks super awesome and refreshing, but it's actually strange tasting. Like they mixed pineapple or something in it. It tastes like a canned drink, unfortunately. I still had a good dinner, nonetheless. This place is called Vit Dong Que, so be sure to try out the duck dishes. They know how to prepare their duck! They had old school Vietnamese folk songs playing in the back. They specialize in duck dishes but they also offer chicken versions of the noodle soups/porridge/rice plates. There's also a few Hue specialities. -banh beo, banh bot lot, banh nam and bun bo hue. We ordered.. Chao Goi Vit $12.50 (Porridge with duck salad) -porridge was slightly bland for my taste and it had a gingery note. It came with a few pieces of sliced gizzards and liver. This came out piping hot, and stayed hot throughout my meal. -duck salad was literally the size of my hand! It was HUGE...but mainly a pile of shredded green cabbage with 7-8 chunks of moist and tender duck. The color of the duck was a little off-putting though; pale brown. Bun Vit Nau Chao $11.95 (Vermicelli soup with duck meat, fermented tofu, taro chunks, and mustard greens) -this bowl of noodle soup was HUGE as well and the broth was slightly sweet. My BF ordered this and said it was good and flavorful but the duck was a tad bit overcooked. When the waiter brought out the sauces for each of our dishes, he actually explained which sauce belonged to which dish. Yes. Like I said, both orders were HUGE. Each one was enough for two people. We were looking at Vietnamese food options in the area and my girlfriend decided on this place based off the juicy and meaty pictures of duck meat on Yelp. We came with two other friends and were seated immediately around 6 on a Saturday night. The place is very mom and pop; we were greeted in Vietnamese. Their menu is a lot different from the usual Vietnamese menu (pho, bun bo hue, bun rieu, etc.). Instead, a quarter of their menu consists of duck; they had duck salad, duck soup noodles, duck rice plates, and straight up duck. Apparently "Vit" in their name Vit Dong Que means duck so it makes sense why the menu is filled with a lot of duck items. Being the more adventurous couple, my girlfriend and I decided to order for the group. Since we were not very hungry, we ordered mostly appetizers. The waitress was helpful in telling us the difference between banh bot loc and the banh nam. We decided to go with banh bot loc for the chewy texture. We also ordered the banh beo, the chicken wings, and the egg rolls for appetizers. The chicken wings were delicious; marinated in fish sauce, honey and lots of garlic. The garlic flavor was so prominent that I almost thought we were in Gilroy for the garlic festival (meaning that it was freaking good). The banh beo was simple yet it was thing that hit the spot. For the main entree, we decided to share half a duck and their chicken curry with baguette. Then the moment my girlfriend has been waiting for, the duck. It tasted just as amazing as it looks in picture. It was very flavorful and meaty. The chicken curry was very aromatic and we can taste the complex flavor in the sauce as we eat it with the crunchy baguette. Even my friend who normally isn't a fan of curry liked it a lot (and she is a local). Overall, we like this place for its more uncommon Vietnamese food and would definitely come back on an empty stomach to try their other items on the menu. I would rate it a 4.5. Tried this place today for the first time , and I was very happy with the food and their service . The duck salad and bun mang vit ( Duck noodle soup with bamboo shoot) were so delicious . I also ordered a glass of avocado smoothie. At first , I was confused as they gave me two types of sauces . Later they explained to me that the ginger sauce is for the duck meat, and the tart lemon fish sauce is for the salad . The duck meat dipped in the ginger sauce is amazing. Loved it ! The duck salad was a big portion , so I ate some and Togo the rest home. The workers (waiter /waitress , owner? ) were super friendly . I felt the warm welcomed as They greeted me when I walked in , and also asked me if I liked the food or needed anything else While I was eating. I definitely would come again. Found this restaurant after reading the article in San Francisco magazine, and the recommendation by the writer of the article is definitely spot on and fully justified. This restaurant specializes in Hue food as well as the steamed/boiled duck. The duck salad is a must. My dinner party could not stop commenting on how lean the duck is, and this is huge plus. Lately I have been traumatized by how fatty Chinese roast duck could be despite of the fact that I am a big fan of the dish; so having a lean and yet still flavorful duck is refreshing. The slaw or salad that comes with the duck is bright and fresh, the dressing is the usual combo of sweet, sour, hot and umami. We also ordered Banh Beo (steamed rice cake in a cup), Bahn Bot Loc (steamed rice cake stuffed with dried shrimp wrapped in banana leaf for the unique fragrance) and Banh Nam (steamed rice cake with fish wrapped in banana leaf). All are highly recommended, you will take your palate on a joy ride with these. Last but not least, Bun Bo Hue! We concluded that we liked it more than quite a bit, the flavor is cleaner than most others that I have tried, the noodle is cooked to perfection, and the generous amount of fresh onion is just a perfect garnish on top. I really enjoyed this place. The banh loc were yummy, be it the fish sauce was kind of bland. That particular fish sauce tasted so watered down and mellow that it didn't do much to accentuate the taste of the banh loc. But holy moly the sauce had the spiciest chopped peppers! The egg rolls came out piping hot and delicious. The wings were had a great fish sauce flavor (although a bit too salty). And they had run out of banh nam right before I got there, so I'll definitely be back to try them. My friends and I also got two bowls of the bigger duck noodle soup with salad: one bowl vermicelli, other glass noodles. The soup has a unique taste to it--it honestly tasted like something essential was missing but it was still okay. The real winner was the duck and the spicy ginger fish sauce! I imagine that's why most people come here anyway. The ginger fish sauce has such an amazing balance of spice, sweetness and ginger! Just how my mom makes it :') and the duck comes perfectly cooked! This place is shady!!!! People please be aware of your money when you pay. They don't accept cards, cash only. I paid my meal which was $30 and I gave the cashier (which I think is the owner) a $100 bill. she gave me $20 change which had a lot of dollar bills hoping I would not count. I told her it was the wrong change and she told me I gave her $50 (she raised up a prepared $50 bill and told me that was the bill I gave her). We were back and forth about the wrong change, then I got so furious and demanded her to check the camera. She then admitted her mistake and gave me the correct change. What kind of ethics is this? If you want loyal customers then at least be honest. I'll never return to this place. read more
