Not too many hotpot + kbbq places that I know of, and given it's in Sugar Land, which doesn't have much of either, Volcano is a great offering! + Hotpot & kbbq, something for everyone, and the hotpot is individual rather than shared + Hotpot meats are self-serve, and stored in a fridge, just grab! + Decent selection of stuff, especially the seafood. Bigger selection of paying the dinner price. + Staff come by frequently enough to replace the lining on the grill + Szechuan spicy broth is good, lots of peppercorns. + Excellent lunch value - They line the grill with a paper with a application of oil/butter. It causes the meat not to stick to the grill, but the major downside is meat takes much longer to get that char, and it's a bit oily. I would prefer if it was just the grill, but obviously it would mean more cleaning for the restaurant It's not gonna beat the restaurants that specialize in one or the other, e.g. Shabu En or Handam. However, it's a great option if you want hotpot and/or kbbq, but you don't want to make it all the way to Chinatown. read more

I'm impressed by how much this place has improved since opening! Decided to give Volcano another try after hearing of their new changes, and it did not disappoint! It was $36.99 for the korean bbq + hotpot on Friday. There are plenty of tables, and I noticed there's another room with even more seats! The servers were super attentive and continued checking up on us. The meat selection has expanded, and while the quality would be better at a speciality kbbq or hotpot ayce place, this is great for those who want both. The hotpot broths are a good starting base, and you can definitely season it to make it even better! I like that the hotpot meat are trays you grab yourself. There are plenty of ingredients, and they all look super fresh. For the kbbq, there are some meats to grab yourself and some you have to order. We ordered one of each meat option, but the galbi was what stood out! It was super tender and marinated perfectly. I really enjoyed the food. Not a lot of variety on the physical menu of things to order but I didn't mind that at all because the walk-up buffet was stuffed. Sadly I didn't get to order a lot of anything, because our server only came up to our table one entire time my table was sat. Just the greet/initial order. No refills, no other orders, anything. Is that how this works? Like you can only order once? Am I trippin? You don't get refills or anything? And you have to pay up front? We were sat around 6, maybe 6:10 at the latest, and left around 7:20. And I am fr not exaggerating lol we only saw our waiter one entire time (saw him once more after I asked the hosts for help, but this was the towards the end). And when we initially got there it wasn't even too busy! I am literally a server myself and always try to be mindful of these things. It was so awkward. Every other table in what I am assuming was our section was, at their respective times, being helped or talked to. And they got to order multiple things! It got to a point I had to walk up to the host's stand and ask who our waiter was, where we could pay, and for a refill for my little sister. Which kinda blowed because this is kind of an expensive dining experience. For the first time in my life I had to leave a not good tip just because the service was actually the worst I had in my entire life but the hostesses were very very sweet and kind, especially in such an awkward situation. Ty sooo much to them, because my little sisters are 11 and 10 and were getting a little antsy lol. Speaking of, maybe the waiter didn't care to assist us because a kid was on the check? Not sure. He did seem kinda annoyed at that so I can only assume that's it. Just makes me sad. The overall tab still was high, around $98 I believe, as we still got charged for two adults and a child. Been here twice and every time it was a great experience. You pay for your own little area of hot pot or you can also pay extra for a grill. When I go with my friends they also feel the same about getting good service and food, which you have to get up and get yourself like a buffet. I've been coming to Volcano since they first opened in Sugar Land. The restaurant is spacious and organized, and the servers are always nice and attentive. There's always a wide amount of food selections available. Everything is buffet style, which includes the meats, seafoods, noodles, vegetables, and sauces/condiments. There's also a wide variety of broths to choose from, which include pork bone broth, tomato broths, different types of spicy/pepper-based broths, herbal broth, and mushroom broth. My broth of choice is always the mushroom broth, and you can customize the broths even more with the sauces/condiments available. Although the KBBQ selection is not as wide as the hot pot options, for only $4 more to the adult price of the hot pot, what they have available is delicious. I'm usually not a fan of both hot pot and KBBQ at the same time, but Volcano is definitely one of favorite places for both options together. It's super nice to have a good AYCE hot pot option in Sugar Land without having to go all the way to Chinatown area, so I highly recommend if you're craving hot pot in Sugar Land. read more

My favorite Korean bbq restaurant. The store was clean and had many seats. I went with both hot pot and bbq option, which was around $34 per person. You should try their Galbi. The meat had good thickness and well seasoned. They also have the line for bbq meats. Personally, I don't like their hot pot. They have many soup options, and they go well with the meat. However, their toppings are not special. I would say it was mediocre. A big "yay" for their staffs, super friendly and attentive. I will comeback but only for grill menu. read more

I've come here probably 5 times already whenever I have friends in the area. This place is so good and has so many options! The first time, I came here with 2 friends for a double date and we all wanted KBBQ and hot pot. It was quite overwhelming to find all the goodies on their buffet bar for the KBBQ and hot pot but overall it was good. They have so many options of meat, seafood, veggies and noodles for hot pot and their sauce bar is very well stocked with whatever sauce you personally enjoy with your hot pot or KBBQ! Service is good, they come by frequently to try and clear out empty plates and make room on the table for more plates. We really like ordering the short ribs from the kitchen, they're super flavorful and already cooked so while you're waiting for the meat to cook on the grill or pot to get boiling you can enjoy the cooked short ribs! They have also an AYCE ice cream and some fruit options as well. Price wise it's fairly reasonable for what you're getting. If you want only the hot pot then the entire table has to order the same to avoid any double dipping so go with a group of people who agree on everything LOL read more

Let's set the expectations first before you visit this place: 1) Everyone at your table has to order the same set up. Meaning if one of you wants hot pot and the other just wants barbecue... Guess what..both of you are paying the barbecue and hot pot price. There is no separation. this was a dealbreaker for me. 2) This is not a buffet in the sense that there are items for you to just put on your plate and sit down and eat. It's more of a buffet of raw things you can choose to put in your boiling pot. Sure there are a couple of fried things that are cooked like eggrolls and noodles and fried rice... But that's about it so if you don't like hot pot, and you are not going there for barbecue because you believe you can grab other items in the buffet... It's not that. 3) If you found out that you now are at the $33 price (hot pot & bbq), come very hungry or make sure you have eaters at the table otherwise it is a huge waste of food or money, depending on how you look at it. 4) If you are super hungry, know that you are cooking your own food so you are basing your experience on whether or not you can add seasoning and meat correctly and waiting about five minutes for your food to cook or even longer to grill. With that said, I thought the soup bases were great. I got the Tom Yum base and my mom chose the pork broth. Of course, going to a hot pot during the summer in Houston is not a great idea but because I wanted to try it... The desserts are just there. They pretty much align with your typical Chinese buffet desserts. The ambiance of the restaurant is quite a neat set up. I think I would probably enjoy this more during the winter time to tell you the truth, but I don't know even for that price. I'd rather just go to my local Pho place and have it already made for me. I stuffed myself with beef, lamb, pork, mussel, shrimp, meatballs, mushrooms, and assortment of greens. $36.80 after tax and before tip per person if you choose the hot pot and BBQ option (price as of Oct 2024). If you only do hot pot, then it's about $4 less. Service is sufficient. Not over the top but not bad either. Plenty of tables inside. Place seemed clean and well maintained. No complaints! They had shin ramen as a option which V loved. For our broth we got the Sichuan style and pork bone broth. You can also do kbbq too but we just wanted to try hot pot this time around. The music was great and the drinks were delicious aka I got a bottle of soju to sip on. services was great as every time we cleared a plate they would pick it up from the table so we had more room on the table , which helps a lot as we went back and forth to add more to the hot pot. Volcano Hot Pot in Sugar was a hit with me. I've never been much of a Hot Pot fan but always loved good Korean BBQ. However, this restaurant does both very well. The buffet style selection of seafood, chicken, and beef allows you to get as creative as you want with your meal. The service was fine once we got past the initial questions of the ingredients of the soup options. Volcano had very tender and flavorful beef which was perfectly seasoned. Their seafood was very fresh but needed more seasoning for the grill if you want to skip the hot pot. Remember this is a buffet but plan to eat what you take since there is a charge for wasted food. The restaurant is spacious with a moderate noise level and no wait on a late Wednesday evening. I look forward to my visit with plans to enjoy the bar. read more

I will try to remain as unbiased in this review as possible. I'll prompt with the disclaimer that I brought my kids here for the first time. I think opening your third eye to other foods and cultures is important. That being said...I did not order for myself. I came with kids ranging from 8 to 14. I went into this knowing my 8 and 10-year-olds probably would try a few things and not like them. I was prepared to eat whatever they did not like. Apparently, that is frowned upon. The waiter asked me if I wanted to order. At first thought, I was a bit dumbfounded. I just looked at him and said "No, thank you. Just eating what they won't, so we don't create waste". To that, the waiter replied that if I were eating their leftovers, he would have to charge me for another full meal. So I opted to not eat. I wasn't about to create a scene infront of the kids, so I let it go. The audacity had me pretty riled up though, considering I'm the paying for the whole thing. If I pay for the food, I should be able to eat whatever I want. The ambiance is an attempt at modern Korean restauranteurship. It's pretty mid. The restaurant itself was fairly empty as we went during off-peak hours. Overall, it was fairly clean. The food bar had a decent variety to choose from. The food itself was pretty good, which included the hot pot. We did not get the grill today. Overall consensus: Go buy a French Fondue set and do it yourself. You can have this experience at home. Just prep the soup the day ahead and choose your own proteins and vegetables. In the long run this option is much cheaper than the overpriced restaurant hot-pot experience. The only reason I Gave 3 stars instead of is that therr is no option for those who eat very little. I would love to go there again but it would not be worth it for me or my son. He is 17 but is autistic, has ARFID and eats very small amounts. He is too old and not allowed to pay for the child's meal. I went because at lunch it was supposed to be cheaper but I messed up and went on a Friday and lunch was same as dinner price. So I paid 35.99 for 3 bites of rice, an eggroll, and a piece of meat I convinced him to eat that I cooked on the grill. I made one small trip to the buffet area.. 1 plate that wasn't full and 2 had 2 of the very thinly sliced premium meats they offer. I am a bariatric patient and unable tp eat more than 1 to 2 cups of food. That being said...it is a great place for the experience and trying new things. Just don't go if you do not eat much unless you want to just pay for the experience. Often, going with a group is very difficult to places that can not or will not accomodate smaller appetites. Big NOTE here: the whole table has to order the same food level! One person can't get just bbq or just hot pot at a table.. the whole table has to order the same. I hope that maybe as more and more people are changing their diets to smaller portions that places like this can put something in place to help. Came here last night while visiting family in Texas. Reminded me a lot of Qpot in the Bay Area (both offer AYCE hot pot + kbbq). We picked hot pot only. What's fairly outstanding about this place is the selection. The meat is a bit more limited on the hot pot side (lamb, chicken, pork, and beef), but that's made up for by the seafood selection. It's buffet style, so you go up to get your own materials (which saves a lot of time of having to wait for items to get delivered). Soup base selection was good, and so were the sauces. The restaurant is also quite large, with good spacing between tables. Overall, reasonable price, great selection, and good service. It's a pretty typical AYCE hot pot restaurant, but in a good way. Most of the BBQ meats were marinated, and the hotpot meats were in a separate freezer. Only thing that I wasn't used to seeing is they put a sheet of paper on the grill and you're supposed to grill the meats on top of this. The service was very quick and efficient, and I appreciated that our server was wearing a face mask. That is not common to see anymore. The food was great! It was a peaceful and good vibe meal since we came during lunch time on a weekday because we don't want to have to wait during dinner or weekend since they are always crowded. Reservations were easy over the phone for bigger parties too so that's a big help. Walking in, this restaurant is very spacious. You choose between just hot pot or Korean BBQ, or you can do both for a small additional charge. The waiter asks what kind of broth you want, I went with the pork bone broth, and then you help yourself to the meat/veggie/noodle options at the bar. While the selection is relatively big, I'd say the one thing that can be improved here is the meat quality. They offer beef, chicken, lamb, and pork, but it's just 1 of each thinly sliced and frozen. The plus side here is the seafood though. I'd recommend getting lots of snow crab legs to get your money's worth. 1. Service - Our waiter was pretty attentive. He came often to clear our table and refilled our soup several times, but he didn't ask to refill our drinks. This is one of the basics of being a part of the waiting staff. That was a bit of a disappointment, but I get it. He was waiting on many other tables and staff was stretched thin. When a place is huge and he has to focus on two different halls, it's definitely a challenge. When you come in, wait to be seated, order, and pay at the table. Your food is at the buffet table, but you have to tell your waiter (at the table) if you plan to eat both Korean BBQ and Hot pot or Hotpot only. Then you have to tell him what broth you want. 2. Price - for an Adult, BBQ and Hot pot is $34, and Hotpot only would be $30. Kids ages 4-6 is $12, and ages 7-10 is $16. 11 and up you're considered an adult. This is average for BBQ price, and about the same for a hotpot only restaurant. Don't forget that this is a buffet and All-you-can-eat. Drinks, taxes, and tips not included with this fee. They can charge you up to $14 per pound for food wasted! 3. Ambiance - this place is huge. There are tables available for 2, 4, 6, and even up to 10! There are so many neon lights in there, it feels as if I'm at an arcade. Nevertheless, it's about the experience. Great place to bring family and friends. In the hall with the big tables, they have Karaoke available. What?! They have many locations in Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Sugarland is their only location in Houston thus far. 4. Food - Forewarning, most of the items at the buffet are raw (90%). You'll need to cook it at your table. The buffet display looks clean and organized. You can also make your own sauce. What I like about this hotpot place is that you have your individual bowl for cooking your food. That is so sanitary. I really like this idea. Speaking of which, there are 7 different broth flavors to choose from. You can look them up in the photos provided by others, but I recommend their PORK BONE SOUP. For the kids, they even have pre-packaged ice cream cups! Look for the white refrigerator next to the buffet table. The individual hotpot is not a new concept, but I do prefer hotpot restaurants that do this. Some other competitors that first introduced this, also had a wow factor at the beginning. But they just couldn't keep up with their buffet display and cleanliness. 5. Cleanliness - one thing I've noticed is that the grill on the table for the BBQ was still greasy from the previous visitor. Perhaps that is not the case for every table, and this could just be a one off. But it makes me wonder. I like that they have tile floors. It seems fresh and clean inside. I'm surprised the air is not greasy as a typical Korean BBQ grill house. But I've noticed that they invested in some really nice fume extraction devices above each table. 6. Summary - Overall, it was a great experience. I would totally come back to this place. Despite some of the few disappointments, I did enjoy my first visit. It can't always be perfect. It's like 90 degrees out right now but we decided to try Volcano Hot Pot & BBQ anyway. I'm not disappointed, though! I had never been to a hot pot before, so I needed some help figuring out what to do at first. The parking lot was packed so I thought it would be a little busier than it really was. It wasn't slow but it wasn't super crowded. We decided to just do the hot pot and not the BBQ this time. There were several different soup bases to pick from. I went with the Thai Tom Yum base and it was really good. It was just a little spicy and kinda sour too, I really enjoyed it. We ordered the base and then hit up the all-you-can-eat section. There were so many protein options from beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, crawfish, lobster balls, imitation crab, really you name it they had it. The BBQ meat is labeled so we knew not to grab that for the hot pot. On the other side, they had a fully cooked crawfish boil, baby Bok choy, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and even different noodles. Several veggies were available as well. They had several sauces to choose from as well, I was a little overwhelmed at this point by all of the options. When we got back to the table the hot pot base was already waiting for us. We just went for it and started cooking everything we had chosen. It's nice to see Sugarland getting some new spots that rival some of Chinatown's eateries. This place is huge with lots of parking. My friends and I came on a Friday night and the place was packed. Larger parties should expect a wait, which indeed we did. It looked like the largest tables accommodated 6 people so they suggested two 6 tops next to each other. We decided one couple could share a pot and squeeze into one table. Worked out great for us. Each person has their own hot pot burner and everyone shares one burner for KBBQ. Customer service was great but slow as well. You have an option of hot pot only, but for 4 dollars more, you get hot pot and KBBQ. To me it's a no brainer to go with the combo. They have a nice variety of soup bases. I wanted something different so I went with the Thai Yum base. It was one of their spicier bases with strong Thai flavors. It was good, but a one and done for me. I'll stick with the spicy Szechuan base next time. All their proteins are set up at a buffet line. They have a pretty large variety and everything we had was delicious. I do feel like the sauce selection is weak but if you can cook, you can make a good sauce for sure. Our broths never went empty and our grills were cleaned regularly. Overall, my friends and I really liked this place a lot. This place just recently opened up in Sugar Land. It was under construction for what felt like forever. They took over the old Luby's, so I was expecting a lot. The build out looks nice. We entered not knowing it was all you can eat, I think they need to advertise that more. I have to say their meat selection is one of the best in town. The had plentiful short ribs and snow crab legs! Generally at other AYCE places the crab legs you have to stalk to get them. Here I felt like they kept refilling. The ribs are the same way. Also the other cuts of meat were great! My only complaints about this place is the broth flavors. He had the Thai and it was very bland. They do have a sauce bar so I was able to adjust the broth to my liking along with supplementing it with a great dipping sauce but would like a bit more flavor there. And my biggest grievance is the hours! It's open at 12-1 on most days, which is way too late for lunch. Recommend reservations for party over 6ppl We came on a Friday evening for dinner close to 5pm and was done by 6:15pm the latest for a group of 8. Because we had no reservations, they had to spit our group to two table 4 tops. It was Father's Day weekend. But the restaurant wasn't even 30% capacity. Honestly the could've gave the bigger table to accommodate us and our kids. When we left no one was sitting at the big tables and restaurant was starting to pick up with more guests. They have steam white rice for the bbq (ask server) Pork bone broth flavorful and throws you off there's actually pork bones in there (so scoop it out) My friends like the Tom yum broth For the cost with Korean bbq & hot pot it's worth the cost. I like we can go grab our own meat & seafood. The meat selection isn't the best compare to shabu, but the Korean bbq makes up for it. We like the short ribs & grilled some zucchini. Still throws me off with the butter and parchment paper, but it helps decrease the burning. I like the individual icecream cups. So much cleaner and sanitation compared to shabu zone self serve. read more

The food is good and all, but it's way too overpriced, they don't even make Ramen from scratch, The restaurant just buy Ramen packs. It's ridiculous that you can get takeout for drinks, but not for food, instead you have to pay for the food order wasn't eaten, It's giving greedy for money. If they hacked down the prices, accepted takeout for food, more people will be coming. Overall, I don't recommend this place. read more

There was a delay at the hostess just to request for a table but we got seated right after. The place is huge so there's plenty of seating. Wonderful wait staff. I got the tom yum broth and so did my husband...and my daughter got the pork bone broth. All chicken broth based. Tom yum was light not spicy, I prefer the broth at little sheep hot pot though. Lots of food options of what to put in. I filled 3 plates and that was enough to fill me up. Everything was fresh and delicious. Overall a great place locally for hot pot. This is very comparable to the ones on Bellaire. Not the best but pretty decent. Glad they have one in sugar land. Service was great. Szechuan broth 3/5 Just okay. We didn't like it as much. It was all oil but no flavor. Spice level was mild. Tom yum broth 5/5 Tasty but no so spicy. We marinated it some more. Pork bone 5/5 Good as you would expect. Healthy. Veggies and seafood selection 5/5 Everything looks fresh. Filled consistently. They also had blue and snow crabs. Meats 3/5 Just decent. Only got three choices. Only tried the hotpot so can't comment on the bbq, but I thought their hotpot was good. They have a good amount of broth options; I opted for the pork bone broth which I thought was good and not too salty. They also had a wide variety of other ingredients that I don't normally see at other hotpot places like pork blood and frog legs, which I appreciate. Overall solid hotpot place! read more
