Every time I am in San Francisco I make a point to try and eat here if I can. I am a big fan of Japanese curry dishes, something you just really can't get much of in Sacramento. This place has never disappointed me thus far. Curry is nice a solid, not runny like other places I have been to, and with it on top of tonkatsu plates - yum! It's even better during the cold winter to have a belly full of warm curry. I mean, winning the Lottery would be better, but warm, delicious curry in my belly? Pretty damn good. read more

I was watching a Japanese food show and saw a Ramen noodle shop focused on curry noodle. It made me curious and decided to find out if there is one in SF. Found this place with 400+ Yelp reviews, and invited my families to get together there. Not sure if I have an unreasonable expectation, I was not impressed with its food. I felt that I probably could do the same thing at home by purchasing those pre-made curry blocks at regular markets. Basically, nothing is particularly exciting at this place. read more

I really like Katsu Curry, but it is usually hard to find a place that does it right. Most places have some soggy piece of Katsu with some semi-bland curry where all the vegetables are soggy as well and tasteless. This place is different. Their Chicken Katsu was crispy and tasty, their rice was done well, and their curry was excellent. The vegetables were not soggy at all and they retained their flavor while blending in well with the curry. My only complaint is that they have varying degrees of hotness for their curry, and I thought their Hot would suffice... It was spicy, but not THAT spicy. I guess I will have to try volcano next time. Other than that, this place is bomb and I will for sure come here again. read more

This place was a great surprise. Wonderfully favorful curry and veggie dishes. The Chicken katsu was great as was the veggie katsu. The kids enjoyed Chicken teriyaki and the noodle soups. We would recommend this place to all adventurous families. read more

Food is really good, price is not. $10 for veggie curry with three pieces each of carrot, potatoe, zuchini, and if you can find the small pieces of eggplant they are there too. Maybe add some more veggies. read more

Volcano Curry is definitely one of my go-tos on Geary because of its great taste and proportions. The food always taste fresh and the curry is also a good temperature. The service does vary though having some good waitresses, yes waitresses as I have never had a male waiter there, which is weird now thinking about it, but getting off topic. Volcano Curry has a good variety and I love their stamp card system. Overall I definitely recommend this place. read more

Good for the price and what you get! One of the cheapest meals you can get out of SF, and they are fast! So far, I've tried: chicken curry, chicken katsu, fried shrimp, "musubi"... It's good! Great for times when you are in a hurry and don't feel like cooking! read more

Go here as soon as possible. Eat until you cannot eat anymore. Go home. Repeat as often as possible.... That pretty much sums up my experience with Volcano Curry. I absolutely love this place. The food is delicious, completely reasonably priced, and served quickly (and by friendly waitstaff none the less!). 4 levels of heat for the curry, all are terrific, and countless combinations of amazing. Ambiance is about what you would expect, but the curry, oh the curry... I have absolutely no idea if this is traditional Japanese curry or not. To be honest, I really don't care. I'll be happy to be a cultural apologist on days that don't end with me picking up this potentially crack-laced container of goodness on my way home. Thanks Volcano, you guys rock!! read more

After seeing all of the raving reviews of people loving this place, I had high hopes. Were my hopes actualized? No, not really. We got a pretty wide variety with chicken katsu curry, chicken karaage curry, and just chicken curry. Okay, maybe not a wide variety in terms of protein, but a pretty wide variety of cooking styles. I expected the curry to be amazing. What I got was definitely Japanese curry, but not the kind I was necessarily expecting. It was really peppery and each plate got 2 roughly cut carrot chunks and a few potato chunks each. "It's not that hard to mess up carrots and potatoes" was my thought. However, today I was proven wrong. You can mess them up and make them taste earthy in all the wrong ways. The chicken itself was really good though, crispy and moist inside. And the rice was good as well. It's just that in terms of curry, I don't think it was anything outstanding warranting it over a 3.5 maybe. read more

I'm replacing my review. I went to Volcano this evening to see if they had improved, and they actually had. It's still not great, but the presentation was much better, there was a bunch of cheese on my chicken katsu, and everything just tasted better than on opening day. Yes, some of the same problems are still there -- paper plates/plastic spoons, a curry sauce that's more runny and bland than the good stuff -- but I wouldn't necessarily steer people away from Volcano anymore. read more

The chicken katsu curry was delicious! The plate does look like it is mainly covered with rice, but the chicken katsu serving wasn't small either. I got the curry in medium spicy, and it was just right. I felt really full after finishing the plate. I wish there were more places like this in my neighborhood. It must be so nice to pick up some hot, comforting, tasty, and not to mention cheap japanese-style curry on the way home from work. I love love love the jalopeno toppers and always order them no matter what curry dish I get (pork tomato curry is pretty freaking good, btw). This is my new local favorite. Thai yellow curry has always been at the top of my list, but now Japanese curry is a very close second. The Katsu sandwiches are huge, and always hit the spot. The staff/owner is great, super service. I always get the beef curry "volcano" hot. It comes with slow roasted potatoes and carrots....the beef is awesome. I like it hot, so add the jalapenos. Prices are perfectly reasonable. My kids and wife find things they like on the menu, too. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. The curry here is better than CoCo Ichiban in Japan, which used to be my standard for excellence in Japanese curry. The food here is very good and reasonably priced. I had the chicken katsu and it was the best I've ever had. This isn't some fancy type of place. It's good just for a couple friends and a nice homey meal. I LOVE THIS PLACE. I always get the veggie katsu plate and eat half now and half later. Great prices, delicious food and it keeps really well! My boyfriend and I were visiting San Francisco, and we were starving and wanted a quick bite before dinner. We just so happened to drive by this place and I really wanted to go because I have always wanted to try curry. I ordered the pork katsu curry and my boyfriend got the chicken katsu curry each with an extra topping of fried spam. It was delicious! The katsu was crispy and the curry packed some heat but in a good way! Both of us were very happy to have stumbled luckily upon this place. Definitely coming back next time we are in SF! read more

I came here with my friend on a visit to San Francisco. We both got the pork katsu although he got a potato croquette on his. The time it took to get our food was a bit long. The curry was a bit bland because I got the mild spicy one, I probably should have gotten a spicier version. But the pork katsu had just the right crunchy texture and meat to coating ratio. The vegetables tasted good in the curry sauce, and there was just the right amount of rice. I ended up soaking the rice in the curry and spooning it into mouth. Tasty! I will be back, hopefully. read more

I love Japanese curry, and this curry shop gets an "alright". I appreciate the large menu with many different options and add-ons, including sandwiches. The quality of the curry is very good, with 4 levels of spiciness as an option. However, I am giving this place only 3 stars due to the fact that they are heavy on the rice and not much else. The cutlet you will get when ordering katsu (I've had both the chicken and pork) is on the smaller side, and they will really skimp you on the vegetables. Even when ordering the add-on of extra veggies (3.50+, rip-off) you get maybe an extra scoop with squash added. Other reviewers have posted photos on here complaining of the same thing, and they are accurate. It's a shame there aren't more curry shops in SF, the other options being the randomly occuring curry katsu you will see at traditional Japanese restuarants. Go only if you really need the comfort. read more

Generally like Volcano Curry but this is the third time they got my take out order wrong. They did offer to replace again but did not feel like walking another 30 minutes to get my order right. the chicken curry... wow. this is definitely my new favorite spot in sf. i came here after a shoot with my sister and best friend. the day after my best friend came in for another two days, 3 days in the same week! we honestly, really enjoyed the food here. my sister chose to get the chicken noodle soup... The chicken Katsu was fabulous, but the curry was on the sweet side, which we weren't too jazzed about. We were hoping for denser-tasting curry. My favorite curry place in the city. I always order the chicken katsu curry, extra spicy with a side of (kinda overpriced since they give u like 5) calamari rings and it's very satisfying and decently filling. The curry is exactly how do want my curry to be, very thick and spicy and it comes over a good amount of rice and ginger, along with a piece of carrot and potatoes. My wife gets the same thing, except medium and there is a noticeable drop diff in spice levels so they're pretty consistent about that. Water comes via a dispenser and you have to clean up after yourself - like putting our own plates away (or you should at least) but it's worth it. The sitting is pretty cramped too, but the place is at least clean (even though the first time I went there i got the impression that the tables would be hella sticky). The staff are nice and would take the time to explain the menu to you if you have questions (but of course the people behind you probably wouldn't appreciate it). read more

i went here twice and ordered chicken katsu curry. it's super good. for the price, it's cheaper than good curry at japan town and around downtown and the portion is big. i love spicy so for the second time i went there, i ordered triple volcano spicy. I recommend triple volcano for the spicy lovers. For the side dish, the potato croquette is great! read more
