We were really impressed with the mini SSAM, which was full of flavorful chicken and loads of fresh, beautiful, julienned veggies. A great alternative if you don't get the fried chicken! I also ordered the two drums two wings combo in medium and it was still spicy! I must be a wimp. Anyway, the wings were plump and juicy and had a very nice crunch to them. The fries were crispy too. I actually think that newer BB.Q Chicken franchise (two miles north on El Camino) might now be the best among Korean chicken joints, but they only offer big full meals, so I still visit Vons for their lunch specials. Those lunches have gotten expensive, though. Up until 2020, one of them was $9.99 for six wings; now it's $13.99 for five. After tax/tip, that's an increase of about 64%, more than triple the inflation over that period. Another thing: one time I came in right when they opened (11 AM), and I think they served reheated leftovers from the previous day (it was dry). Oh man, vons has the best and juiciest fried chicken! My husband and I are huge fried chicken fans, and we're always loyal to Boncho as the best Korean fried chicken. However, after having tried Vons several times we've decided it's a winner. They have the best selection of flavors, sauces, and options (as well as salads and sides). My husband likes their crispy fried chicken, and I like their ssam chicken dish (it comes with a platter of veggies and radish wraps that you can wrap the chicken with, it's super refreshing and tasty!) Overall, Vons chicken is juicier even though Bonchon has their signature soy garlic that cannot be beat. They also give you gloves to eat your chicken with. The chicken was fried to perfection, crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I personally preferred the honey butter one. The drums were really big, I started to get full after eating 3 of them. The rose ddukbokki was a bit of a let down. In COVID times they added an online ordering option, so you can preorder online and then show up to pickup, which makes the process super seamless. You can also call ahead or order in person. Vons has several fried chicken options (OG, honey butter, cheddar, etc), though the original crispy chicken is my favorite flavor. You can order either a full order or a half order, which is a great way to divide up the portion, or mix and match half-orders of different flavors. You can also specify the type of cut of chicken (wings, drumsticks, combo, boneless) which guarantees you only get the parts you like! For the portion you get, it is definitely a delicious fried chicken meal and a steal for the price. We always have plenty of leftovers for days, and the chicken is still moist and tender inside when reheating. Definitely high quality chicken and very flavorful breading from Vons. They also have some side items (fries, rice cakes, etc). I ordered it through takeout most recently, and the chicken was really flavorful with a crispy golden brown exterior and a juicy, tender inside. The level of spiciness was just right for me. There was only one person in front of me inside the restaurant so waited 6 feet behind him (great markings on the floor) and gave my order number and left within 5 minutes. It looked like they had a ton of pick up orders waiting on the tables so I'm assuming that they get pretty busy which is a great thing! 25 minutes after pick-up, I arrived home and everything was still hot and crispy! We ordered 3 kinds of chicken and an order of onion rings. Spicy Chicken (hot): This was a tad on the spicy side for me and I think they had one level above this. Next time I'd probably get medium as it was definitely too spicy for my partner. Garlic chicken: This was my partner's favorite! So much garlic that it smelled up my car on the way home (in a good way)! Honey Butter chicken: This was the most interesting but seemingly very popular. My husbands dad liked this one the best. I loved the daikon as it gives a refreshing bite to counteract the spicy chicken! At each table there is a small stainless steel container w/plastic bag (I'm assuming to put your chicken bones.) There is also a small dispenser of clear plastic gloves to keep your hands as clean as possible from the gooey, saucy chicken wings! Nice touch! The only reasons why it doesn't get 5 stars is because my chicken arrived warm, not hot. I like my food to come out hot! My friend's lunch plate arrived a long 5 minutes after mine did. This is my second time getting Vons Chicken take-out during the COVID19 pandemic. The first time, my experience was great. When I got home with the chicken, the skin was still perfectly crispy and crunchy. Definitely impressed by that since fried chicken usually starts getting soggy rather quickly - especially when you take it to-go. I'd gotten the honey butter boneless chicken and the pieces were all tender and delicious. The honey butter flavor adds a nice sweetness to the meat. The second time, my experience was more subpar. Again, I opted to get the honey butter boneless chicken. The chicken that I received was mostly crunchy still...however, to my dismay there were many pieces that were tougher to bite and chew through. That didn't live up to my first experience at all and I wasn't into my meal much after my first few pieces of chicken. The coleslaw included with the chicken is quite sweet and is covered with a thick mayonnaise sauce. The pink pickled daikon is quite acidic - unfortunately I wasn't much of a fan. Overall, I feel disappointed today with my second experience. Where have you been all my life?? This place makes bonchon look like amateur hour. So glad my friend recommended it. We got 1/2 crispy fried chicken and 1/2 yangnyeom. Crispy fried chicken - this chicken is a testament to the fact that sometimes, basic is best. It's so effortlessly crispy, juicy, and flavorful. We've gotten it mild and spicy and both are great. There's a subtle garlicky flavor, and the pieces are huge compared to other chicken places. It's even great reheated. Yangnyeom - I agree with the other reviewers that this flavor is hard to describe. It is reminiscent of Chinese food - maybe sweet and sour sauce? But mixed with more intense spices. Either way, it wasn't my thing. Overall, this is def my new fav chicken place and I can't wait to try other flavors! read more
