We were really excited to try this place finally! While I don't think the texture of warabimochi is for everyone, we really liked it! The mochi is super soft and delicately sweet. The flavored powders complemented well. We liked the matcha one more than the regular because of the added bitterness that offset the sweetness of the mochi better. We did try both with the brown sugar syrup, but we preferred it without it. As for the mochi drinks, I'm glad I tried them, but I felt the mochi was too sweet. I'd probably skip the mochi type drink next time and just get the regular or go elsewhere for the drink (they sell hojicha and matcha lattes at Churnt next door). The tea flavor itself is good though. Also to note, we got here at 1pm and the 10 piece boxes were already sold out, they're more affordable per piece, but I do think 10 pieces is a lot for 2 people if we had gotten two boxes of them. 2 of the 5 piece boxes was the perfect amount for a small snack in the mall. Also be warned the box has a separate, not connected, lid! I'd definitely get this again if I had a craving. It's nice Santa Anita mall has a unique offering like this. Having just came back from Japan, I can say the mochi here is not as authentic but it's still pretty good and I would get it if I'm ever in the area. It is pretty pricey though. Be careful opening the lid because I ended up making a mess since I didn't know the powder gets stuck on the lid. I also ordered yuzu lemonade which was very refreshing. I stumbled upon this brand in Japan and it was very memorable, so naturally I was so excited to see that they opened a spot in LA!! Since I tried the strawberry yogurt the last round, I opted for the strawberry matcha latte mochi drink...and needless to say, I was so disappointed :( Taste: Make sure to give it a good mix, but the mochi and strawberry syrup were WAY TOO sweet. I had to resort to watering it down because it was to the point where I felt it was inedible; and because I added water, the watery drink became even more thin. It definitely has SO MUCH potential if they just make this specific drink like 50%-75% less sweet. Prices: $8 for this large drink is a pretty sweet deal these days, especially when boba is so expensive. Worth the wait! Went on a Tuesday to take advantage of the promotion and despite it being a weekday, the wait from the line to pickup took an hour. Based on other reviews, this is pretty good. The line is organized and the store is minimal and clean. I ordered the 5pc box (one per person) and two drinks: matcha mochi and strawberry milk mochi. The warabimochi was fantastic and chewy. So different from other mochi I have tried before. The nutty powder with the sweet syrup poured over tied everything together. The drinks were amazing and I loved the mochi bits in them. I tried their coffee milk with mochi, which I would recommend getting half sweet (accidentally got it standard and was VERY sweet). The mochi bits inside were a nice complement to the drink and I really enjoyed them! I also got their Warabi mochi which I enjoyed as I find it hard to get Kinako mochi (roasted soybean flour) topping here in California, where it is much easier to find in Hawaii and Japan. I came here 2 times in the span of 1 week. The first time I ordered one of each, the match and the original warabi mochi. They only have the option to buy the 5 piece. So you'll be jipped if you buy two of the same thing. They don't have the 10 piece options. They should really change their menu if that's the case. Anyways, the warabi mochi is nice and light. Overall, I prefer it over the heavy dense mochi option. The brown sugar syrup added an added umami. I like the OG better. The matcha can be a bit bitter. This was my first time trying warabimochi, and I LOVED it. It was definitely pricey, but I think it was worthwhile to try and I really want to bring my family here to try it as well. My friends and I ordered the warabimochi, strawberry milk with mochi, strawberry yogurt with mochi, and matcha strawberry with mochi. I really enjoyed the warabimochi and strawberry milk with mochi. The texture of the warabimochi was so soft, and it was not too sweet. The mochi inside the strawberry milk was also very soft. I liked it way more than boba. Of note, you have to make sure to mix the strawberry milk very well before drinking; otherwise you'll end up just drinking all the strawberry syrup first. The yogurt flavor in the strawberry yogurt drink was very tart and strong. I think it was good but could be difficult to finish just because of how strong the yogurt was. The matcha strawberry had a light matcha flavor. The wait was about 10-15 minutes, which was not too bad. It took about another 3-5 minutes for our order to be ready. I was ecstatic when I heard they were opening a location in the Santa Anita Mall, but the hype was so crazy when they first opened! The lines were unbelievable and they would run out of product, so I decided to wait until the buzz calmed down a bit. Once I felt it did, I headed over to the food court and found it! The service here is great and everyone was Japanese the day I went, which will help if you're bringing someone who only speaks Japanese. The packaging here is beautiful and there are two main choices- matcha, kinako, or a combination of both. If you aren't a fan of these flavors, this won't be a good choice for you. There are plenty of drink options to try, like their strawberry matcha latte which was delish! But there is a generous coating of flavored powder and also get a small dropper of sauce to top the mochi with. If you've had this before and like it, you will LOVE this one! It's super soft, the powders are of high quality, and it's very traditional in taste and texture! Most people who aren't familiar with warabi are going to expect something like the Mochi you get with Mochi ice cream or as a topping at a yogurt shop. My girlfriend had their iced Matcha+Yuzu Lemonade with Warabimochi. She thought her drink was okay. I wasn't a fan of mine. I did ask the cashier beforehand if there were milk powder in the matcha since I'm allergic to dairy. She checked and she said there's none. When I got my drink, there were white and green specks in it . It looks like the matcha powder and whichever milk powder brand alternative wasn't whisked well. This Warabimochi Kamakura location is the first to open in the US, opened towards the end of October, and is located on the first floor of the Arcadia Mall (The Shops at Santa Anita), by the food court, in front of Daniel's Jewelers. For those that are not aware, warabi mochi is a chewy, jelly like mochi that is traditionally coated with nutty roasted soybean flour and drizzled with kuromitsu syrup (a browm sugar syrup that is similar in color to molasses but thinner and not as sweet. My husband and I decided to come out the week after their opening. We came on a Tuesday and got in line around 10:05 am (yes there were already people ahead of us waiting in line). Total we waited about 80 minutes in line (although we only waited 18 minutes to order once they opened at 11 am and then another 5 minutes for our order to be ready). Why were people waiting in line so early? This new business was giving 50% off. Anyways, when it was our turn to order, we ended up getting: Warabimochi, 5 pieces, $8 prior to tax- I ordered 2 of the 5 piece sets. It was dusted with roasted soybean flour. We were given a small bottle of kuromitsu syrup in a small plastic bottle (two since I had two orders). My husband and I decided to share one box, as we sat at a small table nearby. I really loved the soft chew of the mochi and found the flavoring to be the right sweetness, even without the kuromitsu syrup. But the syrup is also a nice added touch, that doesn't over power the mochi and does not make it too sweet either. The pieces were also pretty large, even though we got an order of 5 pieces (but have read in recent Yelp reviews that it seems that the pieces are smaller now). My mom also liked the mochi (the second box I purchased was for her). But I do want to mention that you should be careful not to choke as the soybean flour may get in your throat. Warabimochi Hojicha, Large, $7.24 prior to tax- We both decided to order this drink. I really loved the flavor of this drink. For those that may not be familiar with hojicha, they are roasted green tea leaves that has an earthy and mild taste, much different from regular green tea (in which traditionally tea leaves are typically steamed). It was nice to try something different with warabimochi in my drink instead of mochi, but did remind me of the similar texture of boba. I really like this combination. But my husband had a piece of tin foil in his drink. Another Yelp member had also mentioned the same (on the same day we had visited). I think the mochi made most likely was wrapped in tin foil that as the employees were peeling away the tin foil, they may have missed a few small shards/ pieces of it sticking to the mochi. This is definitely a choking hazard and am at least glad my husband was able to detect the tin foil and not swallow it (if it was my mom, I feel she may have just swallowed the piece, as she as not as careful and observant). Because of this, I had to lower my rating of our experience. ---------------------------- (Total= $16.80 after tax + 50% opening special) Price point I think is pretty fair, even at full price (but of course it was nice that I was able to take advantage of the 50% discount special). I do like the warabi mochi but I am not sure if I will be back. This is Warabimochi Kamakura's first location in the US with the yummiest freshmade mochis right in the heart of the Shops at Santa Anita. I did not know what warabimochi was until my trip to Kyoto last year. If I were to explain it, I would say it is piece of mochi covered with either powered matcha or soy bean. My favorite is the matcha flavor. The mochi is so soft and chewy. The matcha powder has a bite as usual, which is countered by the sweet bite from the mochi itself. The soybean flavor is also very good. It comes with a sauce but I didn't use it. What's nice is that you can use the extra matcha powder and make a latte. Warabimochi is a nice dessert you can bring over to a guests place if you don't want to come empty handed. The texture from the mochi is top notch and worth every penny.
