Their drinks are sugar-based; this place serves ceremonial grade matcha that is ethically sourced and imported directly from Japan. Came here during the first week of grand opening where they had the 50% off special. On a weekday I had waited about 1hr 15 mins so if it was the weekend I'm sure the wait was a lot longer. Most items were already sold out, so when I got there it was only the 5 pc original flavor left and I also ordered the hojicha latte with mochi. The mochi was really good even I couldn't finish so saved it for the next day and it was still very soft and fresh. The hojicha latte was delicious as well expect I think I didn't stir or mix the mochi enough so it clogged up my straw so it was very difficult to drink it. Overall it's very delicious and I'd want to try the matcha mochi next time, but without the 50% discount it is a hefty price indeed read more

So happy there's a spot in LA for warabimochi! It tastes just like Japan, but it is quite pricy so I'm only giving 4 stars. I've been obsessed with warabimochi ever since I discovered it a couple years ago on a trip to Japan. Ever since then, I get it in Japan every chance every time I go. Needless to say, I was super excited when I heard there was a spot opening up at the Shops at Santa Anita that would be making and serving it. Warabimochi Kamakura is located in the food court of the mall, not along the walls but in the middle. Google maps did a pretty job of guiding me to the stall. I stopped by Sunday evening around 7 pm and luckily both the original (with kinako / soy bean powder) and the matcha were available. I got a box of each, which comes with 5 pieces. The original goes for $8 a box, while the matcha goes for $9. The staff recommends eating them within 2 days, so it's definitely not something you should keep around for too long. They offer a variety of drinks as well, but I skipped those as I was here purely for the warabimochi. We took them home and ate them the next day. Both flavors were so good and tasted exactly like what I had in Japan. Super soft and chewy!! I preferred the matcha one more, but I just like matcha more than kinako so it comes down to personal preference. Each box comes with a small bottle of sweetener syrup, but we didn't use these at all as we felt the warabimochi was sweet enough on its own. This is a nice sweet treat in the Santa Anita mall. This is in the middle of the food court area in the mall. There's lots of seating available in this bright mall area. The service was pretty quick, we got our drinks and mochi within 5-10 minutes. It's pretty expensive in my opinion but it's high quality and freshly made. The drinks are pretty sweet. I just came back from my recent trip to Japan and I was excited to see this type of mochi in America. Mostly I wanted to try and compare since I just came back and it was fresh in my memory. The warabimochi itself was pretty good. You can taste how fresh it was and I love kinako so I like that there were a lot. The only thing I wished was it was in smaller pieces. The pieces were a bit too big for my liking as the ratio of mochi to kinako coverage was off. Too much mochi, not enough kinako so I cut them into smaller pieces and smothered them in the powder. I also did not like the syrup. There was no need in my opinion as it's perfect the way it is. The one thing I was surprised and liked the most was the mochi drink. It had good hojicha flavor and I loved the soft mochi in the drink. It was similar to drinking pudding in my boba but the warabimochi is way better than pudding. 3 stars As well-known as warabimochi is in Japan, I hazard a guess that this little shop is the 1st of it's kind in this part of town. Sure, we have mochi, ice cream mochi, & even hakka mochi, but warabimochi isn't one I've seen in Arcadia, yet. So, during grand opening week, I stopped by and was horrified to find a 2-hr line waiting for us...so I ended up skipping it because they were out of the mochi already. Frankly, a lot was crossed out on the menu, so I waited until today to purchase. I bought the 5-pc. Original Warabimochi for $8. It came in a small, white box with a minimalistic design. Upon opening, you see 5 blobs dusted in sawdust-colored powder. I tried a piece before drizzling on the brown sugar syrup. And, I do think 5 pieces is more than enough for 2 people because of it's sweetness. The sweetness definitely grows with every bite, but the texture is something I'd have to get to used to. It's not a bad experience, but I can't recommend this to anyone who isn't already a fan of mochi. If you're a texture-person, this may or may not be for you as it is more slime-like. The first location in the US has opened, and yes, lines are crazy long - think amusement park attraction lines. Arrived around 10:30am on Sunday before they opened and there was already quite a line, but it got even longer. Once they opened at 11am, it took us about 45 minutes to get to the front of the line and order. Currently, there is a grand opening promotion of 50% off until 11/6 but there is a limited menu, with one 5pc box limit per person for the warabi mochi. Staff was patient and courteous despite managing the hoard of people, and the wait to get your items once you order wasn't as bad. The entire wait time ended being around 1.5-2 hours. Our group of 3 ordered 3 5pc boxes, a small hojicha mochi drink, and a small matcha mochi drink. There are tables off to the side to eat at as part of the food court but most take it to-go. The packaging is simple but sleek, and the warabi mochi was really good (although I don't think I'd wait more than half an hour for it again). I found the mochi sweet enough by itself, but it does come with a cute brown sugar syrup bottle to add to your preference. The hojicha wasn't the best I've had, but the drinkable mochi was good and added some sweetness to the drink. Overall, the warabi mochi definitely shines and is worth a try, although I'd wait for the lines to die down a bit. They've been selling out before their closing hour so if you are willing to brave the line, be sure to arrive early! On a weekday afternoon there was no line. I felt like for the pricing the drinks looked small but it is a hailed brand from Japan right?! I ended up getting what they are known for their OG Mochi. It's a box of 5 pieces of mochi dusted in nut flour for 8 dollars. Whew! A hefty price. It comes with a small bottle of syrup which I thought was necessary otherwise the mochi could feel too dry. The mochi is very smooth, slightly chewy and the powder very very fine around it. There is finesse but for the price it fell short to me. I don't know what more I can expect though. I didn't even consider coming here for the 50% grand opening promo knowing how crazy the lines would be. I value my time more than waiting in line 2-3 hours for a few bucks off. So I came on a regular Saturday morning at 10:30am. Tag teaming with my husband the hour went by quickly as we took turn having brunch around the food court. Hey team work right? At 11:30am we finally were able to purchase 2 boxes for each person along with 2 Hojicha lattes. Our order was ready about 10 minutes later. The mochi is super soft, almost jelly like, and absolutely delicious. I enjoyed both the regular and the matcha mochi. Be careful as they do overly put the kinako powder, do not inhale the same time as you eat or else there's a chance of choking. (Real experience from a family member). The mochis in the latte were a nice touch and better than any boba drink I've had. We shared our extra boxes with family and friends and everyone gave thumbs up. Note the mochi were still fresh and soft one day later. I'm not a huge fan but it's not bad. It's a personal preference thing but I like chewy toppings more than soft ones and just prefer pudding or tea jelly over mochi. I wanted to try for myself the newest Japanese mochi in town, and swung by the Santa Anita Mall on a Saturday to check it out. Warabimochi is located in the food court on the first floor. We arrived around 2:30PM and waited for a mere 15 minutes to place our order. The store only has two options for mochi: 1) Warabimochi, 5 pieces for $8/box or 10 pieces for $14.50/box, or 2) Matcha Warabimochi, 5 pieces for $9/box or 10 pieces for $16.50/box. They did have some drink options, but I only came for the mochi! Due to what I assume is popularity, each customer is limited to buying 1 box. When we got in line, the 10pc box options (both flavors) were already sold out, and the 5pc options looked to be in stock. By the time I got to the front of the line, the 5pc mochi Warabimochi option was also sold out. Shortly after I ordered the 5pc Warabimochi, it was similarly sold out. Understanding how labor intensive mochi is, and how they only had limited quantities per day, I've come to the conclusion that the store must make their entire stock for the day in one go, and so I was a bit surprised I still needed to wait 10 minutes to receive my box. I enjoyed my mochi at home, which wasn't for another 3 hours and that time did not appear to affect the texture of the mochi at all! It came with a small plastic vial of what tasted like molasses, and it was a nice compliment to the super, super soft and chewy mochi, covered in soybean powder. If you're in the area, definitely give this a try; but be warned it does not taste like your typical rice based mochi! read more

When I saw the word Mochi, I had to stop and try it out. I grew up eating mochigashi. I frequent Japanese grocery stores just to buy daifuku (mochi filled with red bean paste). I asked if I could have whatever it was on the a frame sign. She went out to take a look at what I was talking about, and it was the Warabimochi with kuromitsu syrup (Okinawan brown sugar syrup). She was very nice in explaining that the Kinako is roasted soybean flour. I should have taken a picture of my Warabimochi as soon as I received it, because when I got home they weren't as pretty. They tasted much better than they looked. I can't understand the negative reviews regarding the Warabimochi. It is the best mochi that I have ever had. It deliciusly melted in my mouth. I tried it without the brown sugar syrup, and It really didn't need the syrup. I took a small teaspoon full with a drop of brown sugar, and it gave a nice hint of brown sugar to the Warabimochi. Then I tried it with numerous drops of the brown sugar syrup, and it reminded me of the brown sugar boba ice cream bars but much better. We were really excited to try this place finally! While I don't think the texture of warabimochi is for everyone, we really liked it! The mochi is super soft and delicately sweet. The flavored powders complemented well. We liked the matcha one more than the regular because of the added bitterness that offset the sweetness of the mochi better. We did try both with the brown sugar syrup, but we preferred it without it. As for the mochi drinks, I'm glad I tried them, but I felt the mochi was too sweet. I'd probably skip the mochi type drink next time and just get the regular or go elsewhere for the drink (they sell hojicha and matcha lattes at Churnt next door). The tea flavor itself is good though. Also to note, we got here at 1pm and the 10 piece boxes were already sold out, they're more affordable per piece, but I do think 10 pieces is a lot for 2 people if we had gotten two boxes of them. 2 of the 5 piece boxes was the perfect amount for a small snack in the mall. I stumbled upon this brand in Japan and it was very memorable, so naturally I was so excited to see that they opened a spot in LA!! Since I tried the strawberry yogurt the last round, I opted for the strawberry matcha latte mochi drink...and needless to say, I was so disappointed :( Taste: Make sure to give it a good mix, but the mochi and strawberry syrup were WAY TOO sweet. I had to resort to watering it down because it was to the point where I felt it was inedible; and because I added water, the watery drink became even more thin. It definitely has SO MUCH potential if they just make this specific drink like 50%-75% less sweet. Prices: $8 for this large drink is a pretty sweet deal these days, especially when boba is so expensive. I tried their coffee milk with mochi, which I would recommend getting half sweet (accidentally got it standard and was VERY sweet). I also got their Warabi mochi which I enjoyed as I find it hard to get Kinako mochi (roasted soybean flour) topping here in California, where it is much easier to find in Hawaii and Japan. I came here 2 times in the span of 1 week. The first time I ordered one of each, the match and the original warabi mochi. They only have the option to buy the 5 piece. So you'll be jipped if you buy two of the same thing. They don't have the 10 piece options. They should really change their menu if that's the case. Anyways, the warabi mochi is nice and light. Overall, I prefer it over the heavy dense mochi option. The brown sugar syrup added an added umami. I like the OG better. The matcha can be a bit bitter. My friends and I ordered the warabimochi, strawberry milk with mochi, strawberry yogurt with mochi, and matcha strawberry with mochi. I really enjoyed the warabimochi and strawberry milk with mochi. The texture of the warabimochi was so soft, and it was not too sweet. The mochi inside the strawberry milk was also very soft. I liked it way more than boba. Of note, you have to make sure to mix the strawberry milk very well before drinking; otherwise you'll end up just drinking all the strawberry syrup first. The yogurt flavor in the strawberry yogurt drink was very tart and strong. I think it was good but could be difficult to finish just because of how strong the yogurt was. The matcha strawberry had a light matcha flavor. The wait was about 10-15 minutes, which was not too bad. It took about another 3-5 minutes for our order to be ready. Warabimochi Kamakura, a well known mochi dessert shop from Japan, opened its first U.S. spot at the Shops at Santa Anita in Arcadia, and it was chaos with crowds at first. We returned after the hype settled, and with shorter lines, I finally tasted what the fuss was about--freshly made mochis that are soft, stretchy, and downright delicious, sprinkled with kinako (roasted soybean) and deep matcha powder. The experience gets even better with their Okinawan brown sugar syrup, which adds a bold sweetness that's hard to resist. We also paired the mochi with one of their specialty mochi drinks, where the mochi topping totally awesome, and this combo that truly lives up to the viral fame. The mochi is soooo soft and it's clear which is cool! Taste wise not much taste tbh, the syrup brings a good flavor. We tried the regular and matcha mochi. Had to walk awhile to find a place to sit and eat but that's what you get for coming to the mall on a weekend afternoon! This is a small cart by the food court. Their handcrafted warabimochi is INCREDIBLE. I bought the 5 piece Kinako Warabimochi and the portion is perfect for two people. Love the roasted soybean flour on top of the soft, silky warabimochi, and the drizzle of black sugar syrup really ties it all together. Highly recommend! read more
