Yesterday, on a busy Sunday afternoon, while shopping at Tysons Corner Center in McLean, Virginia, we passed by Wasabi and saw the delicious range of offerings. We did not have time to stop and dine, so we made a take out order for both fresh sushi and for some warm appetizers including spring rolls and dumplings. Our dismal ranking for this experience was caused by two outcomes. First, we felt the portions were quite small, disproportionately so when comparing price and quality with others. Second, and more serious was the disagreement with the manager at the counter. He failed us terribly by giving us 3 vegetable spring rolls in our order, when the menu specifically listed four portions. He made unintelligible excuses and argued the point with us needlessly and unsuccessfully. He seemed determined to send us away unsatisfied - even with this tiny matter, to put us in the wrong and not try to correct their error. He begrudgingly did so. We left, not happy with the impression, the food or the experience. The warm appetizers were obviously problematic too, and tasted as though they'd been sitting in their kitchen or warmer too long - dry and unappetizing. This clearly will be the first and last visit we plan to make. It is a spot intended to charm spontaneous visitors who do not make many demands on the quality or quantity of the food they purchase. We do not feel this is a welcoming or hospitable place to visit. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately I don't think it's worth the cost. The sushi is good. Probably better than other low-cost areas. However, I did not get full despite spending $30. The portion sizes are pretty small and you have to grab a lot of plates in order to feel full. I also think that some of the prices were a little higher given the amount of food that they give you. Overall, the experience was really nice. Having the conveyor gives you a lot of options and lets you pick up the food fairly quickly. The service is really nice. The people are really nice and I enjoyed their service . The ambiance is a little strange since you are eating in the middle of the mall. However, I think it goes with the experience. 1.75 Wasabi was good for a long time and had a decent run. Unfortunately the service has taken a massive nose-dive with some pretty horrible waitstaff. As such the quality of food has also taken a hot. There are times where I would grab a seaweed salad from the belt as well as some sashimi and it obviously looks bad and spoiled. I was there on a Saturday around 7 and the waiter kept telling me the restaurant is closing at 8 pm. 10 minutes before closing visibly upset he ordered me to pack up and leave (I was with my kids) and he yelled at us. My kids got scared and started crying. I was already leaving. I informed the manager and the manager stood silent. I will take my business elsewhere moving forward. read more

Have been seeing this revolving sushi for a while now and decided to give it a shot. The service was very prompt and our waiter was sure to check up on us every so often. The sushi quality isn't the freshest but it still makes for a good quick bite. All in all this was a pleasant stop for lunch I just wish they would have had a few more options going around. Most of the plates we got were the purple plates that cost $6.25 . So we spent about $35 and i still was kinda hungry . So that's the only down side . Who wouldn't be lured to this place? A conveyor-belt sushi restaurant at the center of Tyson mall. Everyone sees this place when they take the escalator going down. We wanted to go to this place purely because it's a gem to find this kind of experience. For what it's worth, the experience is worthwhile. It adds up in price as each dish costs like 4 bucks so don't be surprised if you end up eating 20-30 bucks worth of food. What really pleased me was the fact that they offered pokebowls at a very low price of 9.50 - this is one of the lowest I've seen. The bowl was extremely fresh with delicious ingredients from avocados, to masago, and seaweed. Probably wouldn't come here again for the conveyor sushi as it's quite expensive but I'd come back for a pokebowl always. Highly recommend for first time experiences though. read more

Not sure why people are rating this mall restaurant as a 1 star establishment. We had a wonderful time here. A couple things you have to remember when rating this restaurant: 1.) You are eating sushi at a mall. If you are expecting the freshest of fresh sushi, maybe try going to a sushi restaurant that isn't located in a mall. Just a thought. 2.) You are paying for the "conveyor belt" action as well as the food. Keep this in mind when you eat there and grab $2-5 dishes off the belt. You aren't eating at a food court. Unlike my typical level headed reviews I am going to embrace my full fledged school boy enthusiasm for this concept and their food. Are there better revolving sushi places? I don't know. This is the first one I've ever seen and it was amazing. Yes, it's in the middle of a mall and I don't care. It could be in the middle of a rodeo, I would still love it! It's Sushi on a conveyer belt and you can grab as much as you want and just pay for what you take! There are also desserts, snacks, and other lovely things! What a time to be alive! The food was also amazing. the secret to good sushi is freshness, and you get that from volume of business. This place is constantly packed and has to have an industry leading table turnover due to the delivery method for the food. This leads to very high quality and freshness. 2 Michelin stars are awarded to places that deserve a detour to dine at. I have taken detours to get here. read more

Wanted to try a revolving sushi restaurant in the area, and decided to make the drive. The restaurant is located in the middle of the mall on the first floor. The seats were socially distanced, and each booth had plastic dividers to separate you from other guests. Re the food, the choices were mostly the same that you would find at a local fast food Japanese restaurant. There was only one type of sashimi but it was more like the chucks/end pieces you find in super H mart, rather than the neatly sliced pieces you normally expect. Most of the rolls were the generic (CA, Rainbow, Salmon/Yellowfin Nigiri, etc). I don't recall seeing any maki rolls. They also offer Poke bowls at price, but only 3 hot appetizers. read more

I've always loved Wasabi, and I've been in the northern VA area my whole life. Whenever I'd hit Tyson's for a quick shopping spree (that's pretty often) I made sure to eat lunch here. I find it quite affordable, fun, and tasty. It makes the mall experience complete. Perfect for dates, mom and daughter moments, first time eating off a conveyor belt, or just a quick lunch. Make sure you don't miss out on their Miso soup! It's more flavorful than most places I've ordered it, and to me miso is a must before sushi. I always pick the seaweed salad, spicy tuna roll, and volcano California. The Tyson's roll is delicious too! I tried some new ones yesterday- most of which I really enjoyed especially the spicy crunchy salmon! I do not recommend the dragon roll- the eel had little bones in it I did not care for and I fount it too bland. Portions are small but again perfect for lunch or the experience. Make sure you keep your plates to the side since they total your bill based off the color of the plates! Clean tables, and the conveyor belt has what seems to be little ice plates keeping each roll chilled. We showed up early at 11 am (opening time) and they already had a solid selection of rolls ready for taking. However, It seems they put out more of the intricate maki rolls as time goes on and by noon there was more variety. Here's what we tried: Spicy crunchy salmon- this one was the table favorite. Spicy tuna- disappointing and a seasoning on the rice that I was not a fan of Kazoyu roll- the Smokey salmon overpowered the entire roll- not worth it Chicken dumplings- the worst. Skip. A fun and delicious experience! Similar to the tables/stores in Japan where a rotating belt of plates is offered to guests sitting around the table and you can take which ones you want. Plates are price standardized by color. A large variety of options go around the table ranging from sushi to deserts. Good drink menu too. On the negative side it's in the middle of the Tyson's atrium which makes it sometimes a bit hectic, particularly with how busy/popular the establishment is. Sushi is average but what can you ask for in a mall? I can tell that they value quantity over quality with their products. They make a lot of items from a rice press and everything is made like an assembly line. I like the conveyor belt concept but I think they should provide more variety for the lower tier priced sushi. They had tons of high tier items but not everyone wants to eat the fancy stuff all the time. Sometimes simplicity is good as well. The main draw is the experience of grabbing sushi off the conveyor belt and getting to see what the sushi is before making your choice. I dined here solo during a shopping trip, and the waiter was very friendly and helpful in explaining how the pricing and set up works. (The dishes are color-coded by cost.) I ended up having four dishes, which is double what I intended when I sat down. Cons: if you have something in mind or are a little picky, you'll still have to wait for it to come around Tip: read the menu before selecting sushi to be sure of the ingredients in what you're pulling off the belt. For instance, I love Philadelphia Rolls. So I grabbed the first one I saw off the belt. I was shocked to find that they use smoked salmon in their Philadelphia Rolls! After some research, I found that this is not an uncommon practice on the east coast, so I can't really blame them. The Maryland roll was inedible to me. It was seasoned with bay seasoning, and tasted something like a crab roll. Not at all the taste I expect or want when I am eating sushi. The sushi was messily rolled, something I attribute to the style in which it is served. The prices aren't too bad. I had a salmon nigiri that was actually pretty good, although some of the salmon I saw in other rolls wasn't even pink. The seaweed salad and the sashimi salad were also good. I would say the majority of the sushi offered here is cooked. We got a few things such as the California rolls, Ugnagi(eel), noodles( I think it was soba), and crunchy tuna, all totaled up with tip to be $20. Service was good, sushi tasted average, it looked fresh but like all sushi restaurants, it was kinda pricey. Although each plate doesn't cost more than $5 each, those plates do add up considering that most plates don't contain more than a few bites of food. The food itself is decent, but I didn't get any wow-must-come-again kind of factor. If little plates of rolls/sushi isn't for you, you can also order a bowl for $7.50 - choose a base (rice, noodles, etc), meat, veggies. I really wanted to enjoy this place more than I did because I love the concept of revolving sushi restaurants, and I was so happy when I found this one because I miss the ones I've been to back in California. I think I would have enjoyed this spot if I came here with a bigger group of people so that we could have gotten a table, which means more space. If it gets packed and if you're sitting at the back/far-end bar area, there's no space for any of your stuff other than the floor. The counter space for the food gets very tight, which is not good for those that are just slightly claustrophobic. Wasabi has some of the traditional rolls, and a lot of "specialty" rolls uses the California roll base. They do have a decent number of vegetarian roll options. One of them is the sweet potato tempura roll, but it can get confusing because the label is "sweet potato tempura." We may think it's sweet potato tempura, and not the roll (fried sweet potato, avocado, cucumber & sushi sauce). When I was there, most of the plates they had were the $4 and $5 plates, namely: Rainbow Roll (cucumber & avocado maki wrapped in salmon, yellowtail & tuna) California Volcano (crabstick, avocado, cucumber, eel sauce & spicy mayo) Shrimp Tempura Roll (fried shrimp, cucumber & eel sauce) Kazuyo Roll (fried shrimp, cream cheese, smoked salmon, masago, spicy mayo & eel sauce) Baja Tuna (spicy tuna, jalapeño, avocado, red pepper & cilantro) Each had 4-6 pieces, some bigger, others smaller. It gets frustrating when the plate you want is under the top plate as they stack them to put more on the belt. I had some of their nigiri, such as the tobiko (the little red eggs) and the salmon. Both were my favorite things here, but they were $4/plate or $2 each piece. It's similar to some other restaurant pricing, but other restaurants have servers bringing you the fresh food on prettier plates with garnish. They also had ikura (the salmon roe), but there were not many pieces on top of the rice as I'm used it... I saw the white space of rice! AHH! I don't mind the concept of different price per plate, but the person that I was with does. He said that it impacted his decision of what to get. I guess he was used to going to a place in CA called Kula Revolving Sushi where each plate, no matter what it was, is $2.25. As most other revolving sushi places, you can feel free to place custom orders and any plate that you don't see on the belt. The food seems fresher if you go with this option, though they say that they have timers to let them know when a plate has been sitting on the belt for too long. This is also good if you want to order "hot" foods, such as spring rolls and dumplings so ensure that the spring rolls retain that crunch. Yes, this place is great for a quick sushi meal, but it does add up to feel full. I had ~$30 of things here today, and I could have eaten a burger afterwards if I felt like spending the money for one. read more

Wasabi (located in Tyson's Mall) offers a great experience and variety of options. The sushi comes around on a conveyor belt and you select what you want. All the sushi is covered and completely covid friendly. The sushi in the picture is the Tyson's Roll, it was good, but not the best seaweed salad I've ever had. I think the best thing about this place is that the plates are color coded by what price they are, so its up to you whether you want to have just a snack or go for a fuller meal. One of my only complaints would be they didn't have a ton of traditional rolls that I typically enjoy (and they went a little light on the eel sauce).
