I had this place bookmarked. I don't recall what made me want to come here so I went in with no expectations. Our reservation was at 5. They open exactly at 5 and several parties were waiting outside for them to open when we got there. When we walked in we were taken aback by the interior. It was a very nice. We were led to the back room and seated in the corner. It was nice to see restaurant before it got crowded, which took maybe 30 minutes to happen. The service throughout the meal was great. The staff really worked together to serve and clear. At the start of the meal our server, Thomas, explained how he suggested ordering and that dishes would come out as they are ready. He checked on us throughout the meal. We had mocktails to start - the passion fruit cooler and spicy mango soda. The spicy mango wasn't that spicy. I also didn't dare put the chili pepper in the drink. To eat, we started with the octopus a la plancha with fennel. I think this was the first time I had fennel. Looked like a giant onion. Next came the eggplant balado. This was a bit spicy which we didn't expect. My friend doesn't really like eggplant but this dish might have changed his opinion of it. We only ate half to save room for the rest! The corn fritter seemed to be popular so we tried. It's like a funnel cake but instead of powdered sugar on it it's got corn in it. Definitely deep fried. The meat on the crispy pork ribs was very tender and fell off the bone. We finished with the crab rice. The rice seemed very light. The crab seemed fresh. Me and my wife came here during the Birthday week that we share. What a great meal. We had Chef's table seats where you look through a window and watch the 3 person staff cook meals for a fully packed restaurant. Seeing their methods up close was really entertaining and added to the experience, definitely suggest reserving those seats when booking. The service was very attentive, helpful and polite. We ordered the trio of Satays (Chicken, Pork, Chickpea). This was the highlight of the meal, with all three that we chose tasting great. The Pork was the most "authentic" to the Indonesian flavors I was used to from the one other Indonesian restaurant I've ever eaten at (Long Pura in Amsterdam), the chicken was great and the Chick Pea was really creative, never seen that on a skewer before. We then ordered the Tomato salad which my wife loved and the Cauliflour based entree. The entree was amazing, great sauces, great cookery. Really perfect. I also had some of the pork ribs which fell off the bone and had a great bbq like sauce on them. The dessert we ordered was good, but not my favorite thing from the night. Highly recommend backroom as it is a more intimate space with a dimmer environment and a splendid hallway. The food was fun to try out with different flavours and texture. Across food, ambiance, service this is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. It feels equal parts trendy and casual, urban and tropical, experimental and homey. Additionally, while not inexpensive, it is an excellent value for what you get (think Cote before the hype really caught on and prices near doubled). This restaurant is screaming for a Michelin star. The food is as delicious as it is inventive. Each dish is always executed well and arrives to the table at the ideal temperature. There is something for everyone as even my less adventurous brother enjoyed the best chicken satay he has had in recent memory. Expect small portions - you are coming here to taste unique food and to enjoy the vibe. My standout dishes are the escargot rendang, crescent duck, corn fritter, and hiramasa sashimi. Seriously, you need to try the escargot - it is not anything like what you would expect. If I am not mistaken, they do switch up the menu from time to time. The ube banana sundae is a MUST and I would definitely get this before adding any of the other desserts. As for dishes, the server recommended we order 6 dishes total - 3 small dishes and 3 main dishes. We ordered: the octopus (3/5)- the octopus was not as tender as I like and the sauce was a little tangy and just okay to me squid (4/5) - perfectly fried, but i wish there was more sauce corn fritter (5/5) - absolutely delicious! loved that they had a mix of different vegetables that highlighted the corn flavor lobster noodles (5/5) - these were to die for! the lobster was highlighted with butter and noodles were perfectly cooked. Although the food was good, 33% of the group was nauseous and vomited soon after. Probable due to food poisoning? The restaurant was considerate and tried to rectify the situation. This has been on my list for some time now so I was happy to snag a last minute reservation for two for outside. It was helpful that January has started out with unprecedentedly warm weather. As I entered the outdoor dining, I was unaware of the incline and awkwardly tripped my way into the outdoor dining space. It was a little embarrassing. Otherwise the space was nicely decorated. We started out with drinks. My friend got the ube drink. I got the black sesame tequila based cocktail which was surprisingly a lot sweeter than the description made it sound. It was hard to drink. We were told to get 2-3 dishes per person. We shared the yellow tartare and the octopus. They were good but not extraordinary. Then we got the clams which sat on a bed of ?kelp. The clams were average. For the price of almost 30 dollars for only 5 clams, it would be nice if the clams were on top of something edible like vegetables. We had the branzino, which was definitely the highlight of the meal! I would get again. The ribs were horrifically bad. They were so charred that it made it really hard to get the meat off the bones. It made me miss the ribs at Wayla. Lastly, the crab fried rice was ok. It was nowhere as good as the crab fried rice at fishcheeks and sala Thai. Good lord, the prices here are astronomical for the amount you're getting. I came with a friend and we got the escargot, lobster salad, sashimi, AND scallop satay and each of these dishes were small, appetizer size, except for the lobster noodle, which is enough for just one person. Each of the small dishes were a minimum of $15, which I thought was ridiculous for the tiny amount that we got. Each dish was great, in their own way. It was my first time trying escargot and really enjoyed it. Tasted like chicken, and each little bite was pretty good. The lobster salad was also delicious, but part of me can't help thinking that it is something I could have made at home. For $30+, there were only small slivers of lobster scattered sparsely through the noodles. Texture of the noodles were great though. Service was mild, in my opinion. I thought the manager (tall guy with long hair) seemed a bit cold and impatient with me, and I noticed that the other workers seemed to respond to him in a weirdly disciplined way. To put it short - I just did not feel really welcomed by him. The lady that helped take our order though, was very nice and told us from the beginning that what we originally ordered (three dishes) was not enough for two people. The food, however, was just... okay. We started out with the satay (lamb, chicken, beef) and it was amazing. All with complementary and thoughtful flavors and perfectly cooked. We got the nasi goreng and it was also good, but I've definitely had better. There could've been more depth and flavor. The lobster noodle was my least favorite thing- it was glorified instant noodle. While the flavor was packing, it was just drenched in sauce and too overwhelming creamy. I had a party of 9 and it totaled around $160 per person - although there was a very hefty amount of food, the overall experience was not worth the price. Our servers barely spoke and there was slight miscommunication at serval points. Our food was also very oddly paced - we would go 30-40 minutes without food then all of a sudden 3 main course would come out back to back. The pork ribs and octopus lack flavor but are cooked pretty well otherwise. Wouldn't recommend the pork or lamb satays, they were quite dry. The yellowtail tartare is very fresh with floral notes, which is pretty unique and enjoyable. The lobster noodles are very flavorful and the corn fritters are very crispy and well made. The food was just so mediocre. The drinks were OK. The avocado-mango-cucumber salad--if you can even call it that--was literally just a few pieces of cucumber, avocado, and mango. The dressing was practically nonexistent. No balance, no integration. It tasted like mango, avocado, and cucumber--separately. Their "signature" lobster noodles? You could barely taste the lobster. The butter, pepper, and everything else completely drowned it out. Honestly, if I tossed spaghetti with that much butter and pepper at home, it would taste the same. The fried rice? It tasted like someone poured instant soup over it--so salty it was hard to eat. The fish was OK, but nothing to write home about. To make things worse, the waiter pushed us to order an extra dish, insisting it wouldn't be enough. It was. I couldn't even finish the last dish--pork ribs, another "signature" item that was just plain mediocre. The corn fritters? Just chunks of corn fried in a thick layer of dough. Semi-tasty, sure, but heavy, greasy, and not worth it. And for all this? We paid nearly $400. Definitely not worth it. Nothing stood out. We went to a show afterward, and I still had a bad taste in my mouth--literally and figuratively. Worst part? This is a modern, upscale French-Indonesian restaurant with a dimly lit ambience and some tiki-like decor. I made reservations in advance just to be safe, as the busy-ness greatly varies - sometimes a random weekday is super full but a weekend day can have many reservations. Indoor back dining is more preferable as it is a lot more spacious and away from the hustle and bustle of the entrance, though the bar is super nice when we walked right in. We shared a lot of dishes, as the server recommended 2-3 dishes per person. From this experience, 1 small + 1 large with skewers is more than enough, as we barely could finish the last dish served. For starters, we got a variety of skewers - scallop, beef, and lamb. The scallop one is quite creamy, and the beef and lamb dipped in the sauce is excellent. This was a great first impression. We also got the crispy baby squid, avocado gado gado, octopus a la plancha, and hiramasa sashimi. The crispy baby squid is rich and fresh, with a lot of spices. The avocado gado gado is a special take on traditional gado gado that would have had more vegetables, but I prefer the traditional one more. There is still peanut in this dish, but it is a bit fainter. The octopus has some nice grilled onions in chunks and is quite chewy and tender. The hiramasa sashimi has other Indonesian spices mixed well with the sashimi. For the mains, we shared the lobster noodle, corn fritters, crab fried rice, crescent duck, and crispy pork ribs. Lobster noodles is solid, with a thick sauce, though the noodles are a bit on the softer side. Corn fritters is great for a side, though a bit heavy from the deep frying. There is apparent corn flavor throughout so the ingredients are well distributed. The crab fried rice is good, with the crispy rice as additional flair, and the crab was fresh; however, it was a bit on the spicier side. Crescent duck is rich and meaty - there are at least 8 pieces of duck breast that is juicy and flavorful, with some more duck meat underneath. The sauce pouring by the server made the experience a little bit elevated. The crispy pork ribs are well seasoned, a little bit on the saltier side, but the meat is super tender inside and as the name suggests, crispy outside. I personally also got the Island Gal drink. For $19, it is on the pricier side for cocktails, but it is quite strong and it felt like at least 1.5 drinks in terms of amount of liquid inside. Besides, it is quite pretty. Service and cadence of the dishes felt a bit too rushed. For restaurants of this caliber, I expected the dishes to be coursed, as we got a bit overwhelmed with a lot of food coming out all at once. As we wanted to fairly share each dish, that would mean the last dish in a given round would not be as fresh. Food itself is excellent, but the pacing of the dishes could be improved to make this well worth a Michelin guide or even a Michelin star worthy type of place. This place is not cheap - itemizing everything, I spent around $111 so I would have expected a more relaxed experience that is fairly ubiquitous in NYC despite the general fast paced vibe NYC gets in public. read more

The spice mix is truly so special and a flavor explosion. It is sweet, salty, spicy, rich, crispy, soft, literally everything complementing each other perfectly. Escargots rendang (4.5/5) - The only French fusion dish I could find on the menu. It's good, the brioche toast was buttery and crispy. A rich vessel to carry the escargots in a rendang sauce, which is a nice twist from the traditional garlic butter preparation. Lobster noodles (3/5) - I was disappointed with this dish, especially with all the hype surrounding the dish. The problem is that the sauce is too strong and dominates the subtler lobster flavor. Sure it is rich and all, but the pepper flavor kicked too hard, it is most of what I could taste. I also found a shell in the lobster. Pandan custard (4/5) - The Passionfruit was way too sour. If there was less Passionfruit, perhaps it would have been an incredible dessert, balancing sour and sweet and rich, because the panna cotta part was perfect and so creamy. read more

Despite our large number, the staff found space for us immediately and served us well. They understand where good food starts. Their employees are friendly, dishes taste good, and serving sizes satisfy. This spot serves quality food quickly at reasonable prices. My next visit is already planned. read more

Up scale modern fusion spot. I came here for brunch for 2 on a Sunday and was able to get seated easily. The menu is not extensive but you can get a variety of dishes to try as plates are small. Honestly, everything was good but I would say a bit overpriced for what it is. Get the corn fritters - very unique and flavorful. Skip the skewers - meat was dry and bland. Their crab fried rice was pretty good as well! Their drinks are really delicious so definitely try one or two! The meal ends with a complimentary passionfruit dessert. I was initially skeptical but the food came out way better than I imagined. Wayan managed to capture the Indonesian flavors well but I would describe the cuisine to be more French with a hint of Indonesian. Well either way I take it as a win for lesser known south East Asian flavors. I thought the rendang eacargot was my favorite. Never had such a combination before and felt the flavor went well together. The hamachi was a pass. My friends really liked the duck and I liked the lobster noodles (although we joked about how the noodles were from a 50 cent pack of indomee.) the dessert was delicious. We ended up dropping $500 for the four of us. Cocktails were solid Waiters were attentive and kind which is a plus. Vibe was kinda rich Indonesian.
