The fish quality here is inconsistent. Sometimes it's good and fresh fish quality but other times it tastes kind of fishy and has an ocean taste. I usually Go for nigiri when I eat sushi so I can tell how good quality their fish can be because it's just fish and rice. If anything, the service here has always been consistently good. They're very attentive and they fill you water and clean up any dirty dishes off your table right away. One thing they do really well with is their vegetarian sushi. I'm in love with their vegetarian sushi. The shiitake mushroom one is amazing and so is their tofu dice and the new mr bean as well. If you have any plant based friends you gotta take them here for the vegetarian options!!! read more

The prices are little on the higher side and almost every single one of their rolls is spicy. I enjoy spicy but I like to balance my meal. The service is fine. Not bad not amazing. Wazabi Sushi is located close to Old Towne Orange, which is why I came to this joint while perusing in the area. I read some mixed reviews but I thought to myself, "Let's give it a try." The interior is a typical sushi restaurant, with a TV (Lakers were on, yay) and many booths and tables. Service was spectacular, everyone was kind and prompt. I took a while to order as the menu is extremely extensive. I got the halibut sushi (2pc) spicy scallop hand roll, oyster shooter, and Wazabi Wrap. Sadly, the fish here was not fresh. The scallop roll was okay, the spicy mayo did most of the flavoring so it was fine to eat. The halibut sushi..was not soft, and the rice was bland and kinda dry? The oyster shooter was honestly the best item. I tried to save the best for last... But it was the worst.... the wazabi sashimi wrap... The sauce of the dish is very salty, sweet, and creamy. It gets easily tiring. Salmon sashimi was decent. It could still flop and had some fat. The tuna, yellowtail, and albacore were frozen for sure. The texture of the fish just was not soft or tender. I removed them to further examine them and they were still a little frozen. At this point, I just didn't feel like eating anymore :( I try not to waste food but the texture and taste just made me feel sick. I didn't feel like I should send the food back since I messed up the whole plate but it's okay. Live and learn. I do not understand the hype of this place. I was planning to come here all day because of the wonderful reviews but left feeling disappointed. LOCATION & PARKING // Located in Old Towne Orange, it's right next to Snooze. They have a decently sized sign so I don't think you would miss it. There are a couple of designated parking spots next to the restaurant but you could also park on the street or park in the free parking structure (free for 3 hours) right across the way. FOOD // Between the two of us, we ordered: MISO SOUP 5/5: Honestly, this was probably the best part of the meal. I thought it was flavorful, light, but delicious. It came out right away and was a wonderful starter to the meal. Unfortunately, it goes downhill from there. SOFT SHELL CRAB 3/5: This was okay. The crab was fried pretty well and the crab itself was easy to eat. It came with 4 pieces, dipping sauce, and a side salad. While the crab was cooked well, I felt it was lacking in flavor. However, when I tried to dip it in the sauce, it became too salty. It made me not want to dip the crab in the sauce which kept it bland. COSMO 2/5: We didn't really enjoy this that much but ate it all. It felt overly saucy and the fish to rice ratio was bad. It honestly felt like I was just eating a rice ball dipped in sauce and crunchy onions. I wouldn't recommend it; I could barely taste the fish. QUARTET 3/5: This was better than the Cosmo but still not great. There was more fish in this roll but the rice wasn't soft so it almost tasted a bit stale. SERVICE // The service is also where it gets weird. We got here at 5pm (when they open) and all the food arrived in a timely manner and I didn't have any issues with that. My issue is how aggressive they were with how fast they cleared the table. It was too much. We would pick up the last piece and a server would immediately come and take it away without saying anything. It felt like they were rushing us during the meal and it was honestly pretty uncomfortable. Servers also stood right next to our table waiting for us to take the last piece so they could take our plates away. They gave us our check 30 minutes into our meal and completely stopped refilling our glasses of water. OVERALL // 2 stars I don't get how this place is really highly rated. Maybe we had an off day but for the price, I do not think this place is worth it - both the food and experience. I wouldn't return and I'd say skip this place. read more

Service was really really bad- like some of the worst I've had in years. Which is a shame because the sushi was pretty good. We came on Sunday for lunch at about 1pm. There were maybe 8 tables and at least 3-4 servers and they all seemed like they weren't busy and didn't know what they were doing. Our server was supposedly Mint- and she was unfriendly and absent. But we did only see her for the initial seating and for our drinks. For seating she didn't say hello or follow me just waved to an open table and walked away. When we ordered they were out of multiple drinks, which was annoying but not a deal breaker. We ended up getting the Thai tea- it was delicious, not the best I've had but really good non the less. They used crushed ice which was a nice touch. We ordered lunch specials and food came out promptly- the server (not mint) dashed away before I could ask for soy sauce. We never were given soy sauce or wasabi. Before mint came to break down a table next to us she saw us grab the soy sauce because no one came to bring it or offer it or came anywhere near our table for that matter for me to even ask for it. She laughed a bit- like is it funny we have to resort to finding our own soy sauce? and I asked her to please bring wasabi. She never came back- and I saw her doing a whole lot of nothing behind the server station. So after waiting another 5 to 10 minutes I had to wave down a different server for wasabi and ginger. The saving grace of this place is that the food is good- sushi was fresh and rolls were large. Which honestly made me so sad that the wait staff were souring our experience. Also- Mint never came back to our table, another server came to bring us our check- which also I had to wave someone down to get after we waited awhile and no one showed up to check on us. The thing is- I work customer service and I work for a small business. I understand how exhausting it can be working with the public, and how sometimes working for a small business can spread us a little thinner than a higher staffed corporate team. But i didn't even get basic customer service, no hello, how are you, can i get you anything, etc. It was like i ordered from quick service restaurant except worse because i relied on them to get me condiments and the check and they were absent. At least at a quick service restaurant I can pay at the counter and find my own condiments- and im not expected to tip staff. I don't think I'll be back, I just moved near here and was really excited to find a sushi place near my house that I could go to regularly. I don't expect to be waited on hand and foot when I go out to eat, but I got neither attentive staff nor friendly staff. The bare minimum is service that functions without ruining the experience of the food which was unfortunately not the case. Really a shame, the manager/owner needs to put some emphasis on training the wait staff for basic customer service. read more

Thai guys know sushi :-) Service with lots of smiles and fun. The place is near Chapman U. So it's lively with a sort of urban feel. Parking may be a little hard to find. The fish is quite delicious with general selection of your favorite fare. We were there towards the end of the lunch hours. So we basically closed out lunch. That's when the 5 sushi chefs, yes 5, start to relax and helped us empty some sake bottles :-) What was intended to be a brief lucnh turned out to be an early friday happy hour. Its been a long time that we wanted to check out this cute place. Always long line, but we got lucky on a Wednesday night. Very good service, fast, polite and clean. Love the design, very authentic and cozy. Lots of great choices on the menu. We got miso soup too, super tasty. Fish was very fresh and I totally recommend to get either sashimi or no rice rolls. The only flaw was rice rolls, the rice was not the best. My favorite was their 3 option of no rice sushi. The sauce was very interesting, some mix of peanut and soy sauce. Dont forget the hot sake! Prices are pretty fair for the quality. Got sushi, a handroll, and a combo (bento box) for dinner. The rolls, sushi, and sashimi were very good and the chicken katsu tasty and had a bunch of katsu and rice left over for a mini meal the next day. They're quite stingy with the sauce however, so that was the only bad mark given. Definitely need to come back for lunch when there are even more deals, but it's definitely worth it for a nice and quick dinner. How much do we love sushi? Let us count the rolls. There's a nice balance of beginner rolls and specialty rolls. My new love Golden Dragon Roll. Lots of flavor with a little kick. I love to sit at the counter and watch the sushi chefs create, but here unfortunately they aren't able to be seen, so there's no perk to sitting at the counter. Next time I would totally sit on the outside patio. If you have littles they do a kids plate that is chicken or beef teriyaki + 4 California rolls or tempura for $10. Our kiddo opted for sushi instead. Things to know about this location: parking lot is TINY. Better off finding street parking. Be flexible where you sit. You'll be seated sooner. read more

Great sushi spot in Old Town Chapman!! Best time to come is for their lunch specials. I came at 4:45pm for dinner time and there was already a line - within 20min of opening, the restaurant was already full! Parking: There's a small parking lot beside the restaurant for customers only, but other than that... good luck with trying to park on the Main Street! My favorite items: - Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice: More on the sweeter soy side than spicy, but this is for sure the biggest crispy rice I've ever had and it was cooked to perfection - perfectly crisp, sticky, and seasoned. - Spicy Scallop Cut Roll: Again, not as spicy but still a large and flavorful piece with some nice texture from the cucumbers. - Salmon Nigiri: Buttery soft as always - did not disappoint. We also ordered the Hamachi with Jalapeño (too bitter for our liking), Tuna Nigiri (too dry " "), and Halibut Nigiri (too chewy " "). Overall, will definitely come back! SERVICE I dislike leaving bad reviews, but this poor review is well deserved. I must be honest. My hope is to help someone, somehow. I tried helping the manager and the server, but neither care, so now I'm offering this critique to help would-be patrons. I know I'm not the only one who has sensed a bait & switch and an overall decline. This feeling sucks, but I must remain honest & helpful. We arrived without a reservation at 5:30PM on what may be the hottest day of the year so far (May 9, 2025). Our wait was only 10 mins. We declined outside seating due to the elevated temps, so we waited an extra 5 mins for indoor seating (A/C, shade and nice, low light). We were seated in the first booth to the right of the front door (PLEASE NOTE, as it is important to know if you're going to come here despite increasingly mixed and poor reviews). About 5-10 minutes after being seated, and my eye pupils adjusting to the low indoor lighting... AND THEN someone opened the front door and I got a blast of hot, bright sunshine straight into my eyes! What the heck!!! Oh how I wish the server would have warned us before seating us there. The seat in our booth facing the front door faces the afternoon sun head-on whenever the door is opened. When this happened, I had to think fast, so I grabbed the menu to shield my eyes from the shockingly bright rays of sunlight. This unpleasant process was repeated every 5-10 minutes at random for the rest of the evening. Not wanting to be the one to disrupt the peace of the group, I decided not to make a scene by suggesting moving to a different table. So, the unpleasant process went on. And on... Until our food arrived. Unfortunately, each food item came at different times, to the point where one person in our group was finished eating by the time the second meal arrived. The rest of the sushi items came staggered as well. We told the server about the unpleasant sunlight issue, and she told us that the chef hates it too, which felt like a brush-off (and zero apology). Something simple like raising the height of the shade screen would help the chef and prevent patrons from being pestered by the afternoon sun. 1 star (why did we bother tipping!?) FOOD Quality has taken a dive. Baked scallop roll was cold. Flavor was stale. I won't go into the rest of the detail that has been covered by other low reviews. 1 star. MANAGEMENT After the meal, I spoke to the manager; he literally said he wasn't interested in addressing the sunlight issue, nor was there an apology. No self-respecting manager I've encountered at a legitimate Japanese establishment (in Japan or stateside) would dare act so brazenly indifferent. But then again, people are noticing that this place is now asleep at the wheel. Are these new owners, or are we beginning to see true colors? I'm shocked, but it's starting to make sense now, as other reviewers in the know are convinced something has changed for the worse. It's been a while and I've had good food experiences here in the past, and nice service. This bad experience has cemented my new opinion and now I've lost trust. Hopefully this information helps someone avoid a regrettable "Japanese" dining experience. 1 star is being generous. OVERALL I won't be back. The food was better when the place was trying to prove itself. Obviously, they've relaxed and they couldn't care less now. We got our sushi from Wazabi Uber'd and had a delightful at-home sushi date. I always go for a shrimp tempura or crab roll, something with a lot of sauce, so I got the golden dragon - absolutely DELICIOUS!! I loved the eel on top as well with the hint of sweetness it brought to the roll. Everything was packaged carefully so we were able to experience the meal just as we would have if we dined in. Wazabi Sushi has a 4.5 star rating on Yelp which made me wonder it took us this long to try them out???!!! Anyway, this is our first visit and came away with smiles on our faces and a happy belly!!! We had a couple of beers, some edamame. Had the Wazabi Sashimi wrap and Salmon Poke Bowl. Now this is fresh and tasty!!!! What a nice lunch experience! The iPad says one hour wait but we got seated in 30 minutes on a Wednesday. I noticed most diner leave after 30-40 minutes so the table turn around is fairly quick. Food and service are great. Although it's no sushi bar quality, we still enjoy the food with no complaints. Servers are extremely polite and nice.
