I had a great first time experience, came during the week, wasn't busy at all, and the flavored holiday coffee was delish and the prices weren't bad for eggs toast and home fries. Pancakes were good. Unfortunately, my second time was not so good, I went on a Sunday and it was packed and a long wait time and there's no where to stand, your standing in front of other people trying to eat in booths, over crowded on the weekend, and the food was all burnt and the order was messed up, everyone was missing something or had something wrong on their plate. You could tell the cooks were rushing. The waitress apologized and said sorry we are too busy. ?! Ok.. I thought I'd reviewed the West Side Diner previously because it is one of my favorites. But I can't find it so I'll try to remember all the things I would have said before and add recent experiences. Let's start with this - the food is great! Breakfast dishes that satisfy that greasy spoon urge WITHOUT being greasy! Seriously, corned beef hash (home made) and fried eggs and hash browns and not a drop of grease on the plate when I finished (and that wasn't because I licked the plate although I was tempted!). On a previous visit, we were treated to a variety of favorite breakfast dishes including their Eggs Benedict (normally something I don't try in a diner) which was very good; huevos rancheros also very good; pancakes; hash; and other dishes I can't remember. All good. And, you can get an adult beverage if you're so inclined. Love this place and it always seems to be busy so others must as well. OK, every great review needs one negative. I thought the muffins were just so-so. I love baked goods so this was a little disappointing but all the other food and the attentive service more than offset this one minor flaw. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have been waiting for this place to open for the better part of a year. My hope was that it would be good, fast and open early - like a diner should be - so that it would alleviate some of the morning congestion at Nick's and Julians and provide a viable alternative. Well, it IS open early and I took my friend over there this morning as a treat for her birthday. We walked in and were quickly told by the waitress that we could sit anywhere we wanted, so we chose a booth along the front of the diner. The table had yet to be cleared from the previous patrons. Five minutes later the waitress who spoke to us at the door swung by and grabbed a couple plates but left glasses and cups and food still spilled on the table from the previous patrons. Five minutes after that a couple of older men walked in and sat at the bar. They were given coffee and menus almost immediately by the woman who was ostensibly our waitress. At this point we had been there ten minutes and had no menus, a dirty table with dirty dishes and no offer of coffee or anything else. My friend asked if I wanted to leave and go somewhere else. I said we should give it five more minutes. Five more minutes passed - now fifteen minutes since we walked in - and still no attention from any waitstaff. The two older gentlemen at the bar who came in after us had now ordered food. I asked my friend what she wanted to do and she said that we should give it five more minutes. Five more minutes passed with no change in service for us. Twenty minutes after sitting down in a diner that wasn't particularly busy at the time our table still hadn't been bused or cleaned, we hadn't been given menus, offered coffee or even been spoken to by any of the waitstaff. I told my friend that it had been twenty minutes and she said "Let's just go." So we left and got breakfast somewhere else. It appeared to me that none of the other booths were getting any service from the waitstaff. I don't know if this place is just understaffed or poorly staffed, but with half a dozen booths and a counter in the front of the diner it shouldn't be difficult to ensure that everyone gets prompt service - much less any service at all. I can't provide any insight about the food other than to say that it was hard to come by. The interior looks like a classic old diner, but clean and relatively spacious. I also really enjoyed that there wasn't any music playing. I don't know why places like Nick's and Julian's feel the need to blast music when it is already too loud from the standing room only crowd - it just makes people talk louder and increases the unpleasant din. I hope that West Side Diner keeps it music free in the future. Yes, I will give this place a try again. Maybe some morning at 6am before work. I may wait to hear that they have increased their staffing and sped up the overall experience, but I will be back. Until then, it was a disappointing and hopefully anomalous experience. read more

Omg. I came here for an omelette...I'm a hot sauce guy and and I never put salt on any outside food. This food was SO BLAND that I had to put salt AND hot sauce on it! No wonder why I never see people of color in here. I would suggest Johns Diner instead. read more

I stumbled upon this place by accident while on my way to kitchen. Since they were full up, I drove back to the West Side Diner. This dining car had been parked here for years, I wasn't aware someone finally renovated it and opened it. And what a renovation it is! The place is gleaming, it looks brand new. I was very impressed. The diner is fairly wide and open, and they've added a large dining room to the back, with a bar. It's pretty stylish, and with its 1970s large patterned wallpaper that's come back into fashion, it manages to be both a little retro, as befits a diner, and thoroughly modern at the same time. Five stars for the renovation and general cleanliness. We went for breakfast, and ordered stuff that would be pretty hard to screw up, to be honest. I had the western omelette bagel sandwich ($5.99, I think) and a side of home fris and my husband had the hash and eggs ($7.99?). It was all good, but honestly, it would also be hard to screw that up! I tend to judge breakfast joints by the homefries, because an egg is an egg is an egg. And the verdict there is ok, but not exceptional. Could be a little more seasoned, or have added onions or peppers. Service was on the slow side, but it was the kitchen and not the service; Since the cook would walk the plates back to the waitress in the back room, I know we got our food as quickly as the waitress could get it to us. Nothing I can't forgive for a newly opened restaurant but if it had been five minutes more or a few months from now, I might have started getting aggravated. Our waitress was nice though. I'm torn between rating it a 3 or a 4. Truthfully, maybe it just deserves a three, as it seems like an average place to go for breakfast, but I feel generous because it's great to see another restaurant in this neighborhood, especially one that's sparkling clean, spacious inside and actually has off-street parking! P.S. Someone below complained that they wouldn't serve breakfast after 11 am. I don't know if that was a weekday but I can verify that on a Sunday, they serve breakfast after 11. read more

I got the two two two and the Hungry man Breakfast specials. OMG good! I love this place! They are great! The staff is super friendly. The restaurant is clean and they have a cozy back room that can fit a large group. I really enjoyed their home fries and the bacon! All I can say is Yum Yum Yum! You have to try it! read more

So, I had the crab cake Benedict. Eggs were poached nicely, hollandaise sauce was ok, but not great. I like the hollandaise sauce at the Grange much better. Crab cakes were more like bread cakes with a bit of crab in them. Dense, heavy, bread bombs, not crisp at all. I took one bite and knew they were not good. I ate one, hoping there would be more crab, I could not find it...;( I told the owner, and the crab was taken off the bill. I asked for the hash browns, extra crispy, they were the best thing on the plate. Twenty minutes after eating and I feel like I've got a lead bomb in my belly. I might give them another chance, however with other better places in town, I won't run back. That's a shame. read more

This place is new so I'm hoping it gets better! I will give it another chance in a month or two and if it happens - I will change my review. It was pretty bad so it's going to be tough to make that second trip into this diner. The food was not great and the service was lacking. I specifically said I don't want runny eggs so I got over medium. My eggs were runny, bacon was rubbery, home fries lacked any pizazz, and the toast was nothing short of thinly sliced sandwich bread. Closing at 2pm on Sunday and stopping breakfast at 11am shows how little they know about the demographic of the west side. The standard are pretty high here! We have a lot of great places to choose from so if the West Side Diner wants to stick around they better hire professional staff and look into the demographic - asap! read more

This is a combination of an old diner car attached to an old mechanics shop with some additional outside seating. The diner concept was originally invented in RI and this car has a long history. It has been carefully restored and I strongly suggest you sit at the counter for full authenticity! I can fully recommend the eggs benedict. The poached eggs were perfect. The spinach and feta omelette was made with fresh spinach and high quality cheese. The huevos rancheros had a good portion of spicy chorizo and fresh avocado. I would have like a bit more cilantro. Next time I am going to go for lunch and try one of the burgers. You can still get 2 eggs anyway you like them with potatoes and toast for $2.99. Most everything else is under $10. The service is fast and friendly. I know it is just a diner, but it is not the typical super greasy kind. I almost took a star away for the fact that they don't have a milkshake machine. I kicked them an extra star for the freshness of the ingredients and another star for the friendliness of the staff. Only open until 2pm every day. read more

We stopped at West Side Diner early Saturday morning. Our first time in the diner. The staff was exceptionally friendly and we immediately felt welcome. The Federal omelet was excellent and more than enough food. Coffee was always a full cup. A classic diner setting and very clean. We felt like a regular by the time we left. I'm an out-of-towner with family members in the neighborhood. Had breakfast shortly after the recent opening-- best. corned. beef. hash. ever. Not a canned paste that's pan fried but has real pieces of shredded corned beef in it. The eggs seemed very fresh and they have orange marmalade on the table and Frank's Red Hot available, 3 of the top 10 on my checklist. Recently had cheeseburgers to go. One would have satisfied both my wife and I but I got 2, complete with fries. Could barely finish one of them but I did and felt pleasantly guilty all day. Not sure if the charcoal flavor is real or applied but I don't care--tasted like an outdoor grilled burger in DECEMBER! Wanted to get breakfast on New Year's Day but got up too late and had to head home. Will return again and again as time permits. read more

We walked in at 1:55, unknown to us they close at 2:00. I get it, I've worked in the restaurant business, I know the feeling when someone walks in just as you're about to close but to have your first words be "we're closing in 2 minutes, hurry up and order (then just stand there)" is totally unprofessional. We had never been, we were unfamiliar with the menu, and wanted to look over the menu. I can promise you you were not leaving at 2:05, you need to cash out, count your tips, clean, restock etc. that all could have been done while we were eating. I would have preferred to been told they were closed then say "hurry up were closing in 2 minutes," and again, just stood at the table waiting for us to order. Get me a coffee, get me a water and then I'll order. I'll give it another shot, and will be sure to arrive earlier, but that's rude and very unprofessional. read more

Solid three stars. Serviceable diner close to home without much of a wait. Price is good, selection is above average and food quality is satisfactory. A greasy spoon in the truest sense- a diner car with an addition- so good amount of seating. What more is there to say? Good for groups and kids. Lots of parking between the lot and the street. You can't go wrong with diners. They get the job done. Classic American is the perfect way to describe west side diner. The staff is super friendly, the inside is classic diner set up.. however, west side diner has a really cool back room which feels like it's out of a scene from a 70s movie. If you get the chance to sit in there, do it. The food is decent. Pretty standard diner cuisine. I was impressed that they do offer a tofu scramble option. To (hopefully) resolve some confusion: They serve breakfast (only) all day (well, all the hours they're open) on Saturday and Sunday, but only until 11:30 during the week. It's a beautiful place, nicely restored and bigger than it looks from the street. The counter seems to go on forever. It was also nearly empty around 12:30 on a Saturday; there were five waitstaff there who didn't have much to do. My experience was great overall--I was greeted the moment I walked in the door and handed a menu and a cup of coffee shortly after I found a seat at the counter. My Blueberry Crunch Pancakes (a special) came quickly and were, well blueberry pancakes--it's hard to mess those up, but the pat of softened butter and sprinkle of powdered sugar on top were a nice touch. The total was about 11 bucks for a stack of pancakes, a bottomless cup of pumpkin spice coffee, and a glass of orange juice, about what I'd expect from any diner in Rhode Island. It hasn't quite displaced the Modern as my favorite breakfast spot in the Providence area, but it looks like you can get in without a wait, and variety's good. read more

Came here for breakfast our server was Kristin and we had the worst service in the world, she took 35 minutes to bring food out because she was too busy talking to her friend on the counter will never be coming here again, was my first time and last not only our food came out late she got me the wrong omelette by that time I was mad and was not waiting for mine to come out never got to eat, if she wasn't too busy talking she would have payed attention to her tables, the table next to us had to get up and pay there ticket because she never went to the table!
