While this place may be small, it makes up for it with the food and staff. I had the fish and chips when I visited. The waitress was real friendly and made sure we had everything we needed after our food came out, stopping by several times. To my surprise, the dish came out with a fried fish the length of the plate, much bigger than other restaurants I have been to. The fish was fried nicely and not very greasy. The fries were well cooked but could have used a little more seasoning. Having said that, I was happier seasoning them myself than having someone over season them. The other surprise from the plate were the hush puppies! The plate comes with some hush puppies included, which won me over. I love hush puppies. These were definitely a treat. I was excited to try somewhere new for breakfast so we chose Westerville grill. Got a table right away. Cute little place. However that was about as good as it gets. Coffee was weak and watery. Never did get refills unless we continuously waved down our server. I got one egg bacon and home fries. Home fries were greasy with no flavor. Egg was the same way. Got a pancake to try. It was big but flat and chewy. Told the waitress that it didn't taste good but she didn't do much to try and fix the problem. Westerville Grill is a great American diner located in the heart of Westerville. It features good service, a great kitchen and a full menu of well-prepared American favorites at moderate prices. Breakfasts are terrific, and always available. Sandwiches (bologna, BLT, meatloaf, burgers, fish), dinners, sides, and desserts are made fresh (not from frozen). Breads, pastries and desserts are from some of the best local sources (like Uptown's Schneider's Bakery, and Just Pies). Everything I've ordered and eaten here has been top-notch...numerous breakfasts: the biscuits and gravy, the home fries are superb, eggs any way you like them...pancakes, omelets, all on point. Luncheon sandwiches and fries are terrific, as are the sides (onion rings, salads, etc). Dinners delight as well. Good portions, expertly cooked and always served hot. There are several things on the menu I've not tried because I tend to order favorites but I fully intend to try them...and Liver 'n Onions is next! (Hard to find most places). This, on its own should earn them serious diner cred. The Americana decor is clean and cute The vibe is upbeat and real. When weather permits, the patio is quaint and charming. I love the Westerville grill. It's just good diner food and the portions are good. We are repeated customers and plan on being that way. I brought my family here for breakfast while they visited for my daughter's graduation ‍. So party of 8 was very well accommodated! My uncle loved the place so much he wanted to go back for dinner! Staff is always courteous and friendly. When they are busy you need to be patient. It's only 2-3ppl working at most. They have great menu options. I especially love their country fried steak. My daughter loves their mac n cheese. My husband likes everything on the menu. I recommend them for simple breakfast choices in the AM and great sandwiches for lunch. I came to this restaurant do to it's good reviews. But let me tell you, this dinner is not good. At all. My friend had the Tap omelet with a side of gravity. The omelet was ok but not great. The hash browns was tasteless. The worst part was the gravy. It was so thick and lumpy with no taste. I had the country fry steak with mash potatoes and a side of chili. The country fry steak tasted frozen. The mash potatoes didn't have any flavor. Not even taste of butter or salt. The Chili was ok but it didn't taste fresh. Inconsistent food, shoddy service, and uncomfortable seating. This place is really hit or miss. The food usually isn't bad, in fact their pancakes and omelettes are usually pretty good. A good example of the inconsistency is the eggs benedict. I've had it where the hollandaise is rich, thick, and delicious, but I've also had it where they barely put any on, and the sauce is watery, flavorless, and separated. Been here several times before but did not write a review. My oldest son wanted to take mom out to dinner. He had never been. Our waitress Anna was not only waiting tables inside but also outside on the patio. I needed a moment to look at the menu. About 8 mins later she comes back to take our order. My son ordered the meat lasagna and I ordered fish & chips. We received our orders fast! Mine had one huge fish filet, fresh cut skin on fries, and 2 hushpuppies. Smothered the fries with malt vinegar and it was very tasty and scrumptious. All my food was not greasy at all. It was like they were all baked. My son liked his lasagna. He did not want the side salad that came with it. Just the 2 slices of garlic bread. Since Anna was servicing all areas, she was not very attentive to our table. The only time she stopped was to see if we wanted a slice of pie and if I wanted more water. I did want more water and placed my glass by the edge of the table but by that time we just wanted the bill and was ready to go. So glasses were not kept full. One of our favorite restaurants, I usually get the prime rib, or the liver and onions. Both of which are fantastic. Especially the liver and onions. Well tonight I wanted something different, so I tried the country fried steak dinner. I have to say, I was less than impressed with this one. Mainly because the gravy was pretty sub par. It was full of little dry clumps of flour, and had a very heavy uncooked flour taste to it. Like the flour was thrown into a pot with some cream and heated up. Our service was fantastic though and I was hungry, so I didn't complain about it. I didn't want to stress out our waitress over it. Our waitress Anna was so sweet and accommodating, and that was very refreshing. Thank you Miss Anna for the excellent service! New to Ohio, have family here, and 6 of us met last minute to celebrate birthday @ Westerville Grill on a Tuesday evening in May. Met owner; who allowed parents park in his space, really kind and unexpected. Pretty little spot. See photos. We were given choice outside or inside and seated immediately. Waitstaff knowledgable, friendly and attententive. I had Country Fried Steak with gravy and 2 sides. Steak was good. I tried Onion Rings- awesome and Mac & Cheese (basic). Also served Fish&Chips , average, but would order again. Pulled BBQ sandwich with Cole slaw, could use more BBQ less bread. We have been going to the Westerville Grill for probably 7-8 years. It's always been our Saturday or Sunday breakfast stop. The last few months the service has been horrible!!! There are 2 older women who usually work the weekends & they have a bad attitude!! Went in there today with a party of 2 people. There weren't any open tables for 2. There were 2 open tables that seat 4 and no one waiting! We were told if we didn't want to sit at the counter (shoulder to shoulder during cold & flu season on a cold hard stool) then we'd need to wait for a 2 top. Said the same thing to an elderly couple who wanted a table as well. None of the 2 top tables had received their food orders so waiting would have been at least 30+ minutes for them to eat & leave. It was nearly 1pm, they close at 3pm so it wasn't during peak time. Leaving tables empty & hoping someone fills them brings in zero revenue!! We left, I believe the elderly couple left too. We went to Sunny Street Cafe and had a great meal with great service. Tipped the server $20 on a $25 bill. WE WILL NEVER RETURN TO WESTERVILLE GRILL. read more

Coming home from TaeKwonDo one night, we decided that we wanted to try something new. Westerville Grill has been around for a while, so my husband decided we would go there. the front door to the restaurant is a little confusing, as it literally just seems like an entrance - you have to go through another door in order to get to the dining area. we were seated right away, and chose to sit outside. The weather was beautiful. The food was awesome. They serve all day breakfast here, and even for a child's meal, their portions are HUGE. Yes, this place is a pretty small hole in the wall diner. I've been here a few times and have yet to have a bad experience. I was surprised at how much food they give you for the price. I've had an omelet and a sandwich here & both were huge. You will not go hungry here. I love the home fries & the biscuits. They taste homemade. My sandwich on the other hand was a tad burnt, but the large portion of fries made up for it. My advice, stick with their breakfast menu. They serve breakfast all day. My friend and I went to lunch at Westerville Grill today around noon . The fact that there was no one there should have been our first clue. The floors were quite dirty, but we were greeted by a very nice and attentive server. I ordered the grilled chicken salad which was a very small bowl with bagged salad dumped in with a huge amount of cheddar cheese dumped on top with only five very small dry pieces of chicken on top. Horrible! I could have done better at home. My friend ordered a burger, well-done which was mostly burnt. The fries were decent though. Saturday Breakfast visits. We just missed the rush at 915am. Great diner with many special qualities. The small but private parking lot, with overflow in the municipal lot, alleviated the limited street parking worry. Everything was neat and clean. They have an outdoor patio seating, which was tented for winter weather. They began heating this area as we were leaving, to accommodate a second rush of customers. Other diners offered favorite menu items, and no bewares. Our server Karen was warm and friendly, with great menu knowledge, and suggestions. Our food arrived timely, and correct. Missing that 5th star because It's a great diner, but everything is not perfect. There's a table near the soda machine that is kind of loud for conversation. The food was abundant, and delightful. The grits were having a good day. Grits are temperamental. Just ask, and they will tell you. There's no shortage of potatoes. My coffee never touched bottom. The window seating is a nice spot, but a little cooler in the winter. I must say that "Fruit Topping" on items does not mean compote. It is just fresh cut fruit. Plenty of friendly check backs. I saw many pie choices from "Just Pies" local biz, including a Grille signature recipe. Restrooms were not evaluated. Look forward to dining again at other times, to ADD THE OTHER STAR. I have since returned on several occasions to the same good diner food, and service. I did have a corned beef hash. No they do not dump it out of a can. They do however use their homemade corned beef. Grilled, mixed, seasoned, and worth a try. They have daily specials which now include 3 hash's(see pics) I've tried here. I would prefer more seasoning, but that would not please everyone. Omelettes(see pic) are stuffed. Pancakes(see pic) are huge and light. If you add blueberries or chocolate chips, you are going to be ecstatic at the abundance. LOL the blueberries were so juicy that they squirted onto the front window. This spot was just meant to a diner. While at Otterbein, I saw this place as Westerville Grill and then a short stint as a hot dog joint. I love hot dogs, but every college town must have a place to grab reliable diner food. I definitely recommend grabbing breakfast here. You'll find all the staples and you can't go wrong with the pancakes or an omelette. A few weeks ago I stopped in for lunch and enjoyed a veggie burger. Although, be warned the guy next to me huffed at the thought of a veggie burger and proclaimed, "a burger is a burger." Judgements aside, I enjoyed it! My wife and I recently stopped in since the new owners took over. We didn't know what to expect...but after reading through the menu...we developed a taste for some comfort-food. One of our go-to's in Westerville. Uptown burger is one of the best burgers I've ever had. Turkey Manhattan is comfort food at its best. Prime rib special on Friday & Saturday is really good. Homemade soups are always delicious. Pancakes are outstanding. Pies from Just Pies are amazing (of course). My only gripe here is about the service. It's always really good or really bad. Not a lot of in-between. Our favorite server is Channy b/c she is the only one who recognizes us as regulars & treats us as such. We sat outside on the patio recently & the owner came out to greet all of the other patrons except us. Even if he didn't recognize us from coming in almost once a week for over a year, it would have been polite to at least check in, see how our meal was, & maybe introduce himself. We would have only had great things to say, but that snub kind of left a bad taste in our mouths. In any case, tasty food in the 'burbs is not something to be taken for granted. Was craving some corned beef hash and the diner experience so whipped out the phone and up this came. It is a small space when the patio isn't open and unless you hit it just right you will wait...and waiting when it's cold can be no fun. Parking is on their lot or on the street without meters! A lot of regulars come here I could tell by the servers greeting them and saying things like "didn't recognize you with the hat on" stuff. Service is quick and it has to be because they are hustling to take care of all the folks that are in there. I got the hash with 3 scrambled eggs and a biscuit; big plate! I'm used to hash that is cubed up smaller, this came with taters like you'd but in an au gratin and slices of the meet. Wasn't bad - needed more onions and peppers in my opinion. Was disappointed by the biscuit which tasted like it came out of a store wrapper and wasn't even warm; toast next time. Hubs had a meat lovers omelet and I could see the big chunks of meat spilling out from it. Folks were coming in and ordering the pie or the big donuts first before eating their regular meal. That must mean something good. While I wouldn't order the hash or biscuit again I would happily go for another breakfast special and that $1.99 coffee felt so good on that frigid day. The seats are close to one another but that's ok. While you wait for your food read all of the magazine covers they have on the walls and the old ads. Our total bill for two meals and a coffee and a hot tea (extra tea bag cost 99cents) with tax came up to $24.13. We shall return! read more

Nice little spot on route 3, quaint throwbacky seating and décor, complete with a nice looking outdoor eating area (:gasp!: I didn't try that!). The service was fantastic, very attentive and nice and helpful, the cook/manager came out and talked to some of the guests, and seemed genuinely interested in what they had to say. Obviously several regulars there during my visit, so repeat business seems to be no worry. They have breakfast all day, so of course... I tried the sausage gravy w/ eggs, which came with biscuits and hash browns a la Tee-Jaye's Barnyard Buster, but where Tee-Jaye's meal clocks in at barey $5, this meal ran $9, and was not quite as impressive as said Buster. And when looking at the entire menu, that was the rub for me. Value was blarish, and none of the menu really popped for me. There was little of interest or distinction, and little reason for a re-visit. If I hadn't found the breakfast menu, I very likely would have tipped a couple of dollars and left to eat elsewhere. I hate saying that, as they were super nice and helpful, but que seras. I might revisit, but with Jimmy V's, Pasquale's, the Thai Grille and other options, the possibility is slim. read more

I was in Westerville one Friday morning and was looking for somewhere new to try for breakfast. I was torn between The Old Pancake House and The Westerville Grill. I chose the grill due to the photos that had been posted on the Yelp reviews. I really had a taste for some home fries and the plates looked enormous. Alas......pictures can be deceiving. The place itself is a very quaint little spot located on State St in downtown Westerville but it's really small. I mean REALLY small. The food was ok, nothing to write home about. My plate left a little to be desired and my home fries were the size of a serving for a 2 year old. I'm sure the coziness adds to the allure of the place and the service was impeccable. If I were to visit again, it would strictly be for my waitress. But all in all, it wasn't anything mind blowing for me.It'll probably be awhile before I visit again. read more

Couldn't be more upset about the brunch I 'tried' to have with my friends. Showed up and there were two empty, but dirty tables. A waiter said he'll seat me after clearing off a table but that took about 5 minutes. All 3 of us got waters and cokes. At one point, all six of the glasses were waiting at the edge of the table for a refill and it wasn't until I flagged down a waitress that we got them refilled. Two of us ordered the uptown burger with fried egg. Came out with incorrect sides and no egg. The waitress then brought us two fried, greasy eggs with solid yolks on a separate plate. We both bit into our burgers and they were completely raw - dangerously raw (ordered medium well). I mentioned it to the server. Instead of getting new burgers, they put the old ones on the grill (toppings and all) and brought them back to our table. At this point my Texas toast was a dirty, brown, wet sponge. The burgers were a burnt hockey puck, and when we bit into them sure enough they were still dangerously undercooked. I told the server I was sorry but wasn't going to eat the burger, didn't want a replacement, and didn't want to pay for the ones we received. So I've been holding back from posting a review because the food Has at times been really very good. We used to go here all the time and get take out at least once a week. We stopped going here after the girl that was handling our takeout order was a complete bitch! All I wanted to do was check my order to make sure all the orders had a pickle because if you order your kids the same thing and only 1 of them gets a pickle it can start a whole thing. She would not let me go through my order, insisted that I was being rude for even suggesting that I go through the order and that all of the orders had a pickle. Let's be clear one of my kids did not get a pickle that day after all that! So fast forward to today, almost 2 years later. We decided to give it another go. We waited almost 20 minutes for someone to take our order (they were not busy). Another 25 minutes to actually get our food. Then they brought me a burger with a small amount of unmelted shredded cheese just sprinkled in the center. First time in my life I had to send food back! The chicken fingers were hard? Not the breading the actual interior chicken. And the wait staff was pretty much non existent and less than enthusiastic about anything. Needless to say we will not be back.
