Wheel Away Cycle Center has changed owners and Rick is no longer in charge of this company. I went into the shop to get a simple chain replaced and also had them look at my break pads. They told me I needed a whole new drivetrain and cusette and it would be about $500-$600 dollars instead of just a $50 chain. I said are you sure, I take really good care of my bikes and I don't think it is in need of that yet. They insisted and I said ok. When they went to change the parts they realized they were not in stock and had to order the parts and said they could do it in a week when the parts come in. I took my bike and went to another shop La Dolce Velo Bicycle Shop and they said wait you are not even close to needing a new drivetrain or cusette. They gave me a new chain and my bike is running like a dream. I called Wheel Away Cycle Center and they were rude and acted like that is what they say to everyone. They did not apologize for the incorrect information and were very disrespectful over the phone and very very rude. I will never go to this Cycle Center again I'm very disappointed that they blatantly lying to up sell me and they are not a honest bike shop! I had a fantastic experience purchasing my first bike. I had originally purchased a Specialized Rock hopper Comp at Mike's Bike and had to eventually return it since they sized me incorrectly. When I went to Mike's Bike I had a terrible customer service experience and waited 2.5 hrs to get my bike. They didn't bother to check if the bike fit me nor did they take their time to see if I was comfortable with the bike. I called Wheel Away Cycle Center the next day and they had a bike in the next size up.They were very accommodating and had the bike built right before I came. I was greeted when I first arrived and the folks at the store were beyond helpful. They really took their time to give me details about the bike and sized me properly. I did not feel rushed at all and felt like they genuinely cared for their customers. I would recommend this bike shop to anyone who is looking for a great trusted bike shop. Dropped my bike off Sept 17th Tuesday for a mullet conversion on Stump Jumper Evo. Young kid who wrote my tag said it would be ready Thursday Sept. 19th. I gave him the new linkage and 2.75 rear wheel for the conversion. I went to pick it up Thursday Sept. 19th around 3:30pm. I handed my receipt to a mechanic and he disappeared in the back for quite a while. I then saw him bring my bike out and he threw it up on a work Stand. The mechanic who was standing there said "whats this?" The other guy said "it's a mullet conversion" then said to me, sorry man it will be done in 1-1/2 to 2 hrs. I replied I'd be back the following day. I went back the next day at 3:30. I handed in my receipt and had to wait a while. Then I heard a guy say "is it done?" The reply was, "as good as it can be". My bike was brought out unfinished. The mechanic said I had the wrong part and my particular bike "wasn't convertible to mullet, there's no part for it" I was shocked! because that's why I baught the bike. He told me I could just ride it with the smaller wheel as is and deal with the lower bottom bracket. So I went home and looked up my bike and the specs. It turns out I had the linkage for a carbon fiber frame not aluminum frame. And it's available from specialized. Although he said "there wasn't a part for my bike and it wasn't convertible." I'm taking my bike to have it converted where I baught it. Where Away I'm sure is good, it's been around for 50+ yrs family owned. They don't work on specialty stuff. Just basic flat tires, tune ups, kids bikes, etc. I wouldn't take my bike here again unless it was something super basic. Additionally for a Specialized dealership they should know more about their products and what they can do or not do. Their communication with the customer is poor. I never got a call in 4 days telling me the couldn't fix my bike, zero communication between the staff and customers! I'll be going to Trail Head Cyclery from now on and Bike Therapy where they have a brewery next door. read more

I love my bike sooooo much! I was showing it off at work! Having carbon frame makes it so lightweight ( i can easily lift in & out of commuter trains, #1 on my list). So glad I stopped by after checking out 2 other specialty bike store in my area. Bar none, the best deal (than getting a Fuji that I was initially thinking of getting)! I can definitely tell how much the carbon frame helps absorbs some bumps on the road. Definitely ready to join my 1st group road bike this weekend! Incredibly rude customer service. Those working seem inconvenienced by anyone coming in to inquire or try a bike. Questions asked were answered with a short answer, and the staff does not seem knowledgeable. I would not recommend this place if you have inquiries, or don't have a "high knowledge" of bikes. I was looking for a bike shop close by to have them add air to my little toddler bike and came upon this place. I was also on my way to Fry's to get some stuff. There was two gentlemen, don't know if one of them is an owner or not but while one was helping a customer, the other took my sons bike and put air in there. We didn't get charged to fill up the tire, not sure if we are supposed to pay or not. That goes to show you that I am not into cycling. They have a lot of selection of bikes, gears and clothes mostly catering to adults rather than youth. read more

Although I didn't end up buying a bike yet, they get 5 stars just for their stellar customer service. I'm a newbie to bike shopping and the employees made me feel at home. They let me test out a couple bikes to understand the differences and ranges of each bicycle. Their friendliness and my shopping experience was just overall amazing. Prices are normal for a good bike shop. You can't expect to pay on the low end for a good performing bike. And they do offer financing, which is a plus. Kind, down to earth, and such friendly staff! As a beginner, I sometimes feel uncomfortable going to bicycle specialty stores as they can be quite snooty or out to get $$ out of the customer's ignorance. This place is definitely neither. I stopped in needing them to remove a crankset and bottom bracket from my old 10 speed. Me knowing nothing about bikes felt like the whole experience was super smooth, ended up buying all new hardware from them (at a very reasonable price) and they ended up not even charging me labor. I did like the service here and everyone was nice. I told the sales guy that I was only looking around and comparing prices and he seemed to really understand that and let me try out a bunch of bikes. But after I was done doing my research, he seemed kind of pissed off. I would have considered coming back but that reaction really turned me off from the place. Maybe he knew that once I had left, I'd discover that the bikes they were selling were almost cheaper at every other place. Though overpriced, I really do think that this place has great customer service and probably have really loyal customers. I was only turned-off by that one sales associate. My husband and I went shopping for my first road bike and we started at this place. We tried a few other places and ended up back at Wheel Away. The Customer Service from Jake and the owner was excellent and they are so knowledgeable. We purchased my bike, my daughters strider bike and mine and my husbands shoes here. Wow! This is now my go-to bike shop! I called around and no one was doing repairs due to COVID. However, when I called Wheel Away, they said I could walk right in and they would repair my daughter's handlebars and put a kickstand on our other bike. I was so impressed! They didn't even charge for the handlebar repair - just a quick tightening needed and the price to add the kickstand was super reasonable. They were friendly, efficient, and I was impressed that they were all wearing masks and following social distancing protocols. Thanks for saving the day! Our kids are SO happy to be back on their bikes again. I'll definitely return when I want to purchase another bike. Places like this are such a benefit to our community. :) read more

Another stop on my quest to find THE ONE. Bicycle, that is. I know, I'm a bit crazy about this whole bike thing, considering it's just a beginner bike and not that big of a purchase. But the comfort and look of it will greatly affect whether or not I'll ride it more than once. I guess a bike is kinda like a car, you wouldn't be that eager to get in a beat up pinto would you? I came on a Saturday afternoon and they were quite busy with customers. I had to wait a little but JAKE was able to thoroughly help me. After visiting so many bicycle shops, I was no longer a newbie and better able to communicate what I wanted because I already decided my standards/preferences/price range/etc. Service was wonderful. I said this about a lot of the places I visited beforehand but now I know! If I could compare the service and attention here to boyfriends, I'd say this is the one for me after a few medicore ones that I thought were good but didn't know any better! I felt Jake went a step above to ensure I'd be happy with my choice. He showed me the basic beginner bikes for Specialized and Cannondale. I am glad for his expertise because he was able to help me decide between a basic and a step up. He advised against the step up because he actually listened to me about how much I wanted to spend and what I was going to do with the bike. Another thing I really liked about Jake was that after trying a bunch of bikes, he suggested a bike that wasn't even on the floor after watching me ride around in the parking lot, because he felt it was a better fit/frame for me. Apparently, I'm all legs? Not really, I'm only 5'6". Anyway, it showed me he didn't care about making a sale right away and would rather have the customer be fully satisfied. I also liked how he put up with my girly ponderings and need for input on which style looked cuter. Another plus was the whole 2009 Specialized Women's Catalog he gave me to take home so I could look at everything not in the store. Wheel Away is on Hamilton right before the HWY 17 entrances. WHEEL AWAY FROM THEIR TERRIBLE SERVICE!!! 3rd time now that service was terrible - after years of going to this place and buying 5 different bikes, we've decided never to return. Strike Three: I brought in two bikes for service, and they told me that I would have to bring them back in a month because my bikes would be "in the way", when I could see there was plenty of floor space for at least 50 more bikes. Strike two: They wouldn't match Mike's Bike's price that was only $50 difference. Strike one: Owner kept trying to convince me not to buy the bike my daughter and wife wanted because he said "it wasn't right for her". If he just would've listened to us we would've bought two bikes that day. Oh, and then took three weeks just to get a simple bike tune up. read more

My son's bike had a bent wheel from hitting a tree. The bike was nothing fantastic, it was a 26 inch bike bought from Target for about $150. I thought the bike's wheel could be fixed by bending / hammering it out. When I took it in, it was an empty store. I was told that the wheel needs to be replaced and the type that was originally on the bike was not available. If it were to be ordered it will take about a week or two and cost about $60. The other option is about $75 but I will have it right away. I did not want to wait any longer because my son said he would like to go biking again. I also did not want to go to another bike store and run the risk of covid. So I just asked them to replace it there and then. It took only about 20 mins to be done. To be honest, I do not think it is not worth it for a tire to cost as much as half the bike, but the bike was still very new so I don't want to be wasteful. So I guess it's a choice between convenience and budget. read more

Really awesome store for bikes. The biggest difference from other bike shops that I notice is the level of service and vast selection of bikes they offer. Rick and Kevin are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I went in just thinking bikes were all the same but boy was I mistaken. They both took the time to explain how to ride and sit properly and explained all the nifty options and materials the different brands and models offered. No issues on parking as they have there own private lot. Pricing is reasonable and they take all major credit cards. This place used to be good. Now all they want is to sell you a new bike. People take pride in taking care of their bikes regardless of how old it is. They have a repair center in the back, but what's the use if they're going to say the best thing to do is to replace your bike with a new one. They're stupid because I would've been prepared to replace a bunch of components on the bike just to get it back to where it was when new. I was prepared to spend $500- $600. It's now at another bike shop getting the work done. Customer service is dead at this place. Never talk down on people's stuff. I've been to many bike shops throughout the Bay Area and this shop is simply amazing. I got no help getting warranty coverage on a broken crankset on my road bike, so Wade from Spokesman told me, "Go see Jake at Wheel Away." Wade has helped me with so much, I ran and took his advice. Long story short, this shop got me replacement cranks - covered under warranty - within a day. This is a shop that did not know me, as I had never spent any money there. Now THAT is what I call customer service! These guys are kind, and they know their bikes from top-of-the-line speed machines to sweet looking beach cruisers. I was impressed with the number of families looking for kids bikes when I went in. The staff was attentive of every customer, and I know now that I have a brand new shop from here on out for service, parts, etc. So, if you are anywhere near Campbell and you need a bike or some help with your bike, stop in and see Jake (and if you are in Santa Cruz, go see Wade at Spokesman!). read more

I was in need of a bike rack because my car (4 door Lexus ES300) back seat doesn't fold down or trunk is big enough to accommodate a bike. Shoving a bike in the trunk while tying the back with bungees is ghetto and I don't recommend it. (I tried this) I called into Wheel Away and asked what my options were and they recommended an over the trunk bike rack that was easy to put on and would put me out for about $130. Not bad at all!! So worth not popping the wheel off of my Mountain Bike to get into the backseat! Previously I called another bicycle shop and they recommended for me to install a hitch THEN buy a rack so I'd be spending a minimum of $500. Um can't do that because I seriously ride my bike a few times a month if that. So when I got there they put together the bike rack, put it on my car, and taught me how to take it on and off on my own. Feedback: - If you're a bike novice like me- the knowledge that they tell you about the all types of bikes can be overwhelming. - The over the trunk bike rack ALSO needs some bunjee cords! After I rode away my bike kept flying everywhere (super scary on the fwy!) So make sure to get these to tie down the wheels and get it more secure to the car. read more

We bought our four year old daughter's bike here, and the selection was excellent. Customer service was great, I got helped right away, and they mounted the bell to her handlebar for me while I was paying, saving me a few minutes of time. The selection in the store looks like it's pretty good and the price was reasonable. We looked at a half dozen different bike shops before buying from here and I was very happy with the experience. Honestly, it's more about the experience at the other places that makes me realize how good this place is. At many other shops, people either had no idea what they had for sale or how much it cost, or we'd wait for fifteen minutes for someone to help us, or they had no selection. I'm not a serious biker so I can't attest to how good this place would be if you're an adult looking for custom bike parts or whatnot (though they seem like they have a lot of stuff.) If you're looking for a bicycle for your child, though, I think this place is great. read more

Came in on a Sunday afternoon with the hopes of going home with a bike. I was helped out by Tyler who was very patient and committed to helping me find the bike/color I wanted. Unfortunately they were sold out of the popular models and colors. Tyler pulled a couple of bikes out of a boxes to show me colors when I saw the bike I really wanted. Unfortunately they didn't sell disassembled bikes due to laws but I was eager to leave with that bike that day. Tyler spoke with a manager and they reassured me they could have it assembled and ready later that day which would save me having to drive all the way back from Gilroy on a later date. As busy as they were that day, wheel away and Tyler outshined in customer service and showed me how committed they were to provide to their customers. Not only was their customer service beyond great but they have the best prices compared to other bike shops I've previously shopped at.
