Made a quick stop at When Pigs Fly on our way to a show in Hampton Beach. While we've eaten loads of their bread, we haven't been to their restaurant. We sat outside on their nice picnic tables and enjoyed the summer afternoon. Our server was quick to seat us and took good of us. When one of our sandwiches didn't come out as ordered, she was quick to get it fixed. My meatball grilled cheese was really tasty (I left off the hot peppers). My partner's Turkey BLT came out on the wrong bread, but once it was fixed, it was great. The bacon was thick and smoky! Plus there was live music while we ate! What a great spot! read more

I had the Date and salami pizza ( which I think is super popular) and my partner had the meatball sandwich. Both were made well and tasty however something was a bit off... A very loud atmosphere that is very cluttered. There were kids everywhere that were just being far too loud. I could not hear nor speak to the waitress for the life of me due to it. The only seating for large parties available is on high tables which prevented my elderly grandmother from being able to easily sit down. Other then that, the place is very nice, the bathrooms are very aestetic. The waitress was nice when I was able to hear her except she split water everywhere and failed to clean it up. The menu is very limited especially when you are looking for dishes that are not pizza. This is definitely one of those pizza's that my heart is made out of as the flavor profiles that can be found here are nothing short of magical just like a flying pig! Of the many different options it was all about the momma lil's for us as it had sausage, onions, and peppers on it all things that make a pizza fly! That pizza was delicious and just oh so good with every bite it was cooked perfectly and those flavors were totally there in every way! For dessert we ordered the chocolate chip cookies s'mores it too was beyond yummy as that ice cream had all components of the s'more in it along with yummy cookies you really can't go wrong! Great pizza, but not the dining experience we expected at Pig's Fly. We came here as a friend recommended this as her favorite pizza place, so we were excited to try! Reviews on Yelp said they allowed dogs outside but that's not entirely true. They don't allow dogs at their outside seating that's table service...but they have some picnic tables to the side, beside the parking lot, where you can order takeout and sit down. As we had our dog with us...this wasn't ideal. We ended up ordering takeout to sit on the picnic tables. Not the biggest deal but a little bit of a bummer. You can order drinks from the bar and take them outside too. They also provided napkins, plates, and cutlery. So, at the end of the day, at least we didn't have to go home hungry and still had a good dining experience. Just not what we expected. The pizzas we ordered were phenomenal though. Neopolitan style pies that were cooked to perfection. We ordered the EGGPLANT & BASIL RICOTTA topped with fried eggplant, red sauce, basil and mozzarella and the MUSHROOM with roasted garlic rosemary ricotta base, white wine roasted mushrooms, balsamic onions, fontina and topped with truffle aioli, arugula and romano cheese. The Mushroom was definitely my favorite! And for someone whose first choice is NEVER mushrooms...quite surprising! The appetizer of Buffalo Wings was a well worth the visit. Big sized wings, juicy tender meat, the sauce was the right level of spicy...over a really strong dish. The pizza however was a bit disappointing. The crust was not only thicker than I expect with a wood fired pizza but the center of the dough wasn't fully cooked (visually could see it was still raw). I got the meatball grilled cheese and it was vile. I was so excited about the hot pepper relish and really wanted to love it but the meatballs (that's a joke they were some weirdly shaped squares) were so dry they were almost inedible. it was physically hard to eat as these squares of meat were massive and had the consistency of shredded cardboard. The hot pepper relish was super salty and the fries were luke warm. The only good thing was the bread but you couldn't taste it over all the salt. This place is so good!! It was packed right at opening when we went! We got the ricotta toast on their homemade bread- it was so good we bought all the ingredients to try to replicate at home! Still a favorite go-to place, the falafel salad is to die for and the outside seating they added during pandemic is a big enhancement and fun with corn hole and music. I have not been able to eat the pizza since 2014 when I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy. I believe they are one of the only places on earth that doesn't accommodate gluten sensitive people with their pizzas. I think since it's a bakery it's possible they are concerned with cross contamination - but 95% of folks who are gluten free can tolerate cross contamination- celiacs cannot and I understand that. Also - since they are a bakery - why have only wheat flour? How fun to play with other flours! Teff, almond, rice, so many options. Ugli brand are amazing sourdough gluten free pizza dough brand. Anyway - have to remove a star after 10 years. We still go there about once a month. Would go there a lot more and restore 5 stars if GF crust. Enjoy! read more

My boyfriend would like to be buried here, he is so obsessed we came up here on a slower weekend (the weekend before Memorial Day) and it was packed to the gills! We luckily got two seats at the bar. We ordered two beers, the Caesar salad, the hot honey tenders and the mushroom pizza. All the food was outstanding (I now am understanding my boyfriend obsession). This is a really great place for a casual lunch or dinner! We were really impressed that they were about to accommodate our group of 10 over Labor Day weekend. We thought the service was really great and our server was very attentive despite it being busy. We got the poutine, a Greek salad and a bruschetta pizza and liked everything. We absolutely LOVED the poutine, highly recommend adding brisket. Our vegan friends went with us and they were able to accommodate them as well with not just pizza but some apps which was nice!! I really hate to write this review. I have always loved coming here and every time we went to Maine I had to stop here. Unfortunately, this time I was very disappointed. First, the prices have gone up quite a bit. This wasn't too unusual as everything has gone up pretty much everywhere. However, I did not expect the quality to suffer. The pizza was terrible. I couldn't even eat one piece and I was so happy that we had ordered fries. I don't know what they did but the cheese and the sauce were both different. It did not even look the same as it used to. If I come back here I definitely will not have pizza. And the fries are the only reason for the two stars. Even the service wasn't great. It's very disappointing because I really loved the pizza here. I just can't recommend this place anymore. If you want pizza just go to Amato's. read more

Overall: 4/5 Brief Thoughts: Already an excellent bread store, When Pigs Fly makes equally excellent pizza! The outdoor seating space was a nice touch (though be wary of the bees during the summer time; they do have traps hanging around the area to help with this). Presentation on some of the apps was somewhat lack-luster, but the overall quality of all the food ordered was excellent. Highly recommend this spot if you find yourself looking for a detour heading down route 1. Pros: high quality + excellent tasting food, friendly service, and an amazing bread store nearby Cons: the beeeeessssss, some food presentation Items Tried: Mushroom and Chicken and Bacon Pizza, Wings with Sweet Chili Sauce, and Bruschetta Review: Traveling back from Acadia on Route 1, we hit a massive patch of traffic right close to the MA-ME border near Kittery. Our crew of tired travelers decided a pit stop for lunch would be SUPER helpful, and thankfully When Pigs Fly Pizzeria popped up on our radar. As a New England local, When Pigs Fly breads was a familiar name; I remember seeing their advertisements on TV growing up, but had never had the chance to try their products. Thankfully that got to change upon this visit. Their store in Kittery acts as both an in person shop for their baked goods, as well as a kitchen/ pizzeria to see their products and work in action. We reached the restaurant and which was fairly crowded, but turned around tables very promptly: were told there was a 10-15 minute wait, and they stayed on the dot with their timing. In the mean while, I got the chance to scope out the store and find some bread to bring back (HIGHLY recommend their Olive and Chili bread). Once seated we were quickly greeted by a waiter who took our orders; the waiters were very patient with us as we took a look through the menu and figured out what worked best for everyone's preferences. We decided to split 2 pizzas (Chicken + Bacon and Mushroom) and some small plates for the table (wings and bruschetta). The apps arrived first; the wings looked well cooked and came with a side of sweet chili sauce, and had the perfect balance of crisp skin on the outside and tender meat as well. The bruschetta came a little jumbled, with olive oil-drizzled bread, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella bites somewhat haphazardly tossed; the overall flavor and quality, however, were bang on, with the bread being the absolute star of the show. I was hoping this would be an indicator of the pizza's to come, and thankfully it was. Both pies were excellent: the mushroom pizza had great, full bodied flavor profile with some bright/ bitter notes courtesy of the arugula, and a light but much appreciated truffle flavor courtesy of the added aioli. I was initially afraid the Chicken and Bacon pie would be too heavy, but the addition of tomatoes on the pie was enough to brighten it up and alleviate the expected greasiness. All the food together was more than enough for our party of 4, and we ended up having leftover to bring with us in the car. Overall, I left When Pigs Fly extremely pleased with my experience-- the overall quality of the food was spot on, and I only dock a star just for some minor presentation issues and the bees in the outdoor space (though this definitely would not be a concern to indoor diners). I definitely will try to return to this location some day, and hope to swing by the When Pigs Fly stores local to me in Cambridge some time soon! read more

I had an excellent meal at When pigs fly in Kittery Maine. I ordered a Greek salad with chicken and ate half of it. I said to the server that I would like to take the rest home however she did not hear me. When she came back to the table, I asked her if she had heard me and she said no I'm so sorry I didn't. And she immediately said we will have the kitchen make you a salad to take home. I couldn't believe it! Stopped in last night for dinner shortly after 5PM. The place is cavernous and there were quite a few empty tables. But that didn't last long. It filled up quickly with folks young and old. Being from New York originally one of our highest quests has been finding good pizza in Maine. It's been an arduous journey. This is really one of better places IMHO! Started with a delicious bowl of mussels topped with the freshest most garlicky chimichurri sauce, which of course, was accompanied with their delicious bread. We then consumed a meatball, ricotta and mozzarella pizza that was really delicious. A glass of house Pinot Grigio at $4.25 was a real bargain. Our server, Theo was top notch. When our pizza arrived missing one slice. He informed us that they would comp us a 2nd pizza. So lunch today is set. The menu is pretty varied. visited over the Labor Day weekend. Kind of a funny story, I was here when COVID first hit and they were serving outside in a make-shift set up of tables on the front lawn. It was tough but it got the job done even though the spring weather in the state of Maine can be tough. Well, we arrived today, the same set up is in place except they built an outside bar which was beautiful and they added nice large picnic tables and lighting. A very nice set up! I counted 20 outside tables and 18-20 seats at the bar with a TV and great lighting! When we arrived, we had to wait 10 minutes for a table. We decided to eat outside instead of inside. Tables were turning over rather quickly so it was not a big deal. We were sat by the hostess and quickly approached by Liz, who did a great job throughout our visit. We ordered drinks and perused the menu before ordering. After getting our drinks, we were ready to order. My wife ordered the grilled salmon sandwich with fries. I had the margherita pizza. We did not order an app but if so, we would have gotten either the wings or bavarian pretzel. Both looked great as they came out to different tables while we were waiting. The foot was delivered within appropriate time and boy was it delicious. My pizza was cooked perfect and tasty! I ate three slices and brought 3 home with me. My wife was thrilled with her sandwich and fries and she commented that it was perfectly cooked and exactly what she was hoping for. I thought that this establishment has always been welcoming and inviting to all guests traveling to and from the outlets and NH areas. The food is always fresh and the service is always spot on. You would think that with the fact that this is a semi-touristy place, that it would take away from the experience but it really does not hamper the small town scratch baking and cook feel and we love coming here. Another plus about this place is the beer list. I feel that there are different types from all over the New England area. This time that I came here I had the brussel sprouts as an app and the steak salad as a meal and it was fantastic. The steak was cooked perfectly and the brussells were roasted just enough that the caramel of the glaze made it crispy and delicious. I used to love this place but their prices went up and portions shrank. I came on a busy Wednesday where they have a great special $5 select pizzas. I got the margarita with mushrooms- while the dough was great the sauce and cheese had no flavor at all. We had mussels which were tasty but $16 price tag is high even though it was a fairly generous portion. $12 burger that doesn't come with fries? Yikes. The pizza size was what I'd consider a small- 6 slices. I appreciate they have diary substitutions but they weren't allowed on the special even if we paid an up charge- that's a tad frustrating. Service took awhile, a lot of waiting to order, waiting for the check, waiting to pay. Just a lot of waiting.
