I lived in Korea for a year and I would consider what I ate here authentic to what I experienced in Korea, for the most part. Service was on point.... food was so good. Pay for the hot stone bowl (makes the rice deliciously crispy). We will definitely be back. I didn't take any photos because I was too busy enjoying the food! We had the wings (appetizer)-these were so good I would've liked that with rice as an entree, but I ordered the Galbi just how it comes. It was well served, the portion size seemed a lot. The rice was very good. I enjoyed it very much. My husband ordered the Dwaeiji Gigogi (Spicy Pork) it was also delicious but unfortunately just not as much meat portion as mine. I'll be honest. When I saw a Korean restaurant in Bozeman, Montana, I said to myself "no way this is going to be good Korean food." Upon entering and not seeing any Asian people at all, kind of a red flag. But hey, I'm here. I found it odd they charged extra for banchan (side dishes) which are typically included at nearly every Korean restaurant. Also noting people using chopsticks to eat bibimbap was a bit odd. But hey! It's Bozeman. Everything is weird. I ordered the stone pot bibimbap, added spicy pork. When the dish came out I was surprised at how massive the portion is. I was also surprised to see they use Korean black rice (which turns the rice purple). All I'm going to say is every assumption I had flew out the window. This bowl rocked. I was blown away. The vegetables in the dish tastes so fresh and the spicy pork was grilled to perfection. The sizzling stone bowl (dolsot) perfectly crisps up the rice. Quality of vegetable ingredients was good. Local and fresh. But they let them down. Flavor was meh. Had only a tiny amount of beef in the bulgogi Bibimbop was mostly fat. Was looking forward to wagu bulgogi. But the veggies and rice were good. It just didn't have any flavor. We used the hot sauce and the dip from the appetizer to try to make it better. Korean food has so many good spices that we're missing. The lions mane pancake was way too greasy and super mushy in the middle. Also lacking in flavor. The mushroom should have shined in this dish but it was like the batter wasn't cooked on the inside and there were not enough scallions in it to taste. I really would like to give a higher rating, but I've has mixed experiences here. The food has been fairly inconsistent, in my experience. I've had the dolsot (hot stone) bibimbap and kimchi jjigae multiple times. With both of these dishes, it's felt hit or miss. With the bibimbap, the rice texture (really wet/mushy), stoneware temperature, and gochujang spice level varied significantly. The kimchi jjigae was great the first time I had it. However, as compared to other Korean restaurant that I had been to: - This place does not serve enough side dishes. There was only one small pickled cucumber plate for 5 of us! There was no kimchi or anything else. - We ordered Kimchi soup and Bulgogi but I only wrote review for kimchi soup. It was bland. It just tasted sour and spicy. We walked in at 6:30 PM on a Wednesday night and we we're seated immediately. Service was prompt and staff was pleasant and accommodating. I love the Whistle Pig and the delicious food served here. We loved this restaurant. The vegan bi bim bop in a hot ceramic bowl was delicious. The bowl kept the large portion hot and crunched the rice in the bottom of the bowl. It had lots of fried tofu in it and fresh crisp vegetables. The pork stew had a complex tomato based sauce with just the right amount of heat. Our server kept our water glasses full and checked on us occasionally without being overbearing. We also loved the black sesame coconut cakes. They came in a little bag when we ordered them--rather than being served on a plate. But they were a wonderful end to a great meal in a restaurant with a comfortable warm ambiance. This is an incredibly unique restaurant. I am so glad I stopped by. I didn't know what to expect and found the menu a little confusing and so I followed yelp recommendations on what to order. I got the bulgogi bibimbap. I ended up with a delicious rice bowl with beef, spinach/mushrooms/veggies, and gochujang sauce with cool fresh pickled cucumbers on the side. They offered me a hot stone serving bowl made of granite. This is what made the experience and dish so unique. It comes to your table sizzling and the hot bowl puts a beautiful golden brown crust on the rice and browning on the veggies. The stone bowl was still too hot to touch after my meal... so careful with kids... otherwise mix that bowl up and dig in. This was our first dinner in Bozeman. There are no reservations and is first come first serve. The best things we ate were the hot dog bread and bibim mandu. They don't offer many of the traditional Korean sides, but the few they gave were good. We also enjoyed their bibimbop and jopchae.
