I grew up in w Michigan and visit often. Windmill has a wonderful breakfast and is pretty budget friendly. Our server, Mel, was fantastic. My dad goes there with his buddies every Tuesday and he was eager to introduce his family to one of his favorite servers. She was wonderful. She even remembered all of our names as we left the restaurant. Pretty impressive! After waiting in a line for 45 minutes on a Monday morning, my family and I were more then ready to be seated when they brought us to our table. That's when the magic happened. Our server was very attentive and helpful with our children. After our orders were taken the food came out no more then 10 minutes later. My wife and I got the hash brown omelette with ham, onions, American and cheddar cheeses. The omelette came with your choice of toast, pancakes or cinnamon roll. Get the cinnamon roll, it's outstanding. You can get it deep fried and with half chocolate half regular frosting. It was huge and delicious. The portions here are large. One omelette could easily be spilt between 2-3, especially when you factor in the cinnamon roll! read more

Love, Love Love the Windmill. I ordered the Denver omelet with fresh cheddar cheese. What made the dish over the top is the fresh bread that is served as a side. OMG! If your saving carbs for a special time, use your carb count on this bread. It is smothered in butter and if you prefer, they'll substitute for homemade cinnamon bread too. I could've eaten an entire loaf! Someone else in my group had a side of cinnamon buns and said it was beyond delish....did i mention you can order it fried as an option? Yes and the locals says is pretty darn amazing. One more thing....try the breakfast sausage. Not sure what brand, but an tell you it's absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked - the best part - no gristle! The staff is wonderful too! Friendly, smiling and always will to help. Awesome service and friendly staff! We came here during the tulip festival, and although there was a line out the door the staff was willing to sit us at the counter for no wait. I had the spinach and feta omelette with a side of the cinnamon roll (this is a must - the cinnamon roll was the best I've ever had & the icing was phenomenal!) My friends had the French breakfast (a heartier breakfast option if you're real hungry), the pancakes, and the tomato soup and egg salad sandwich. For dessert we had the coconut cream pie - also amazing if you have a sweet tooth! This is where you go for breakfast in Holland. It's a diner, only open for breakfast and lunch. The omelettes are pouch-style-- inside your pocket of egg is a center of cheese or other fillings. Hash browns. Townies, not tourists, but a more casual environment than the somewhat geriatric crowd of Russ'. Great little diner that is best known for its breakfast but has a full, expansive menu. You can order anything on the menu at any time, so having a good number of choices is never a problem. 4 daily breakfast specials, each under $3.25, are a good place to start. The service is steady, as they won't let you see the bottom of your coffee cup. Probably the best place for "people watching" in all of Holland. Oh..and get there early, especially on the weekends. I was instinctively going to give it 4 stars but there's nothing for me to complain about or wish things were different. Located on a busy stretch of 8th street near River Avenue, there is some public parking just north on River Avenue. There isn't much room near the front to wait but if you're near the cashier, you can at least smell the different candles for sale. I took the recommendation of other yelpers and went with the hashbrown omelet since I like hash browns more than eggs. The waiter asked if I wanted onions (yes!). The waiter also always asked if I wanted refills on my water rather than assuming. My lady had one of the daily specials and really enjoyed her meal as well. She asked for her hash browns crispy and it came out correctly. I enjoy hash browns more than eggs so I was really happy with the omelet since it kept the cheese and bacon warm throughout. My rye toast was well buttered and the ambiance was nice. The high backs on the booths gave us privacy yet you could see the decor of the Delft porcelainware. Being that it was July 4th weekend, they also decorated it appropriately with American flags. Overall, it was a great meal and a place I'd definitely return to for future meals. read more

This place is like the Cheers of breakfast places. The waitress knew everybody's names. Except the "out-of-towners" like us. Maybe we got the the "Tourist Treatment". Really...I wanted to like this place more. They were one of the only spots open for breakfast downtown on a Sunday morning. The "liking more" part just didnt happen. First of all, the table are on top of each other. I mean, we literally had breakfast with the tables on either side of us. Cozy for sure. Second, the service was S-L-O-W. After a long wait while we were starving..the food just didnt deliver. Pretty generic stuff. The price was pretty decent, but I would have paid more for better service/food. I got the Hashbrown Omelet (which comes with the most delicious homemade wheat toast - seriously, it is so good!) after a good dispute with my boyfriend because we can never order the same thing. We like to try as much as we can. So he end up ordering the Windmill Favorite, but when I saw his pancakes I almost switched back. Very good food, great service, awesome coffee!! There was a line to sit down out the door, but it only took a few minutes to get seated. I was surprised there wasn't a kids menu, but they had a special of 2 pancakes with 2 pieces of bacon for $3.35, so that worked out well. The only reason this is a 4 star instead of 5 was my disappointment in the biscuits and gravy. It. Was. Awful. Bland, dry, the biscuits were obviously yesterday's biscuits, dense and chewy. The gravy was so bland I poured salt on, which I never do. The salt helped, but it was still thick and pretty tasteless. My sons pancakes, the bacon, and my husband's hash, however, were all fantastic, so I'm hoping the B's and G's were just a fluke. We would definitely go again, I'll order a cinnamon roll next time instead! read more

Love it here. There is always a wait, partly because it is small and partly because it's so good. My mom and I come up to Holland one weekend a year and try to fit in everything we love while trying new things. Well, we never skip out on The Windmill. Their coffee is tasty and they have flavored creamers. This time, as usual, I got the hash town omelet. It is a meat of your choice along with cheese wrapped in yummy hashbrowns. I get the smaller version so I can have another side. I like food people. Their homemade bread is delightful so be sure to order that as your toast. My mom had corned beef has and eggs. She got the corned beef hash well done and it came out to the perfect, non burnt, crisp. The Windmill is adorable and quaint and we love it there. They also have some great soy candles for sale. We were walking around downtown looking for a place to eat breakfast when a local stopped us and told us we should go to the Windmill. So glad we did! I had the mini hash brown omelette and it was delicious. The mini was more along the lines of a normal sized omelette and not at all "mini". The coffee was really good too, which is simple but something a lot of places manage to screw up. They had a lot if good sounding options on the menu and it was tough to decide what to get. Out waiter was super nice and helpful. I will go back for sure my next time in Holland. read more

This is a great diner. There are many reasons why: The hash brown omelet is brilliant. They have a wide variety of hot sauce (big plus). The staff is very friendly. They have homemade bread. They seem to know most of their regulars and were very accommodating to us out-of-towners, too. We sat at the counter and chatted briefly with the wait staff and the people sitting next to us. The omelet actually had excessive onions, so be cautious if you do not like large amounts. The homemade wheat toast was amazing, best I have ever had. Well let me first begin by saying I have NEVER seen a crew work so hard! These ladies were constantly making fresh coffee, refilling drinks, wiping counters, seating tables, and on and on. They never slowed down, and they never made the customers feel rushed with their meals. Always friendly! The food was delicious it was hot and the coffee was just perfect. I honestly can not say enough good things . the stop here at Windmill Resturant made my impromptu trip to Michigan perfect. I will for sure be back and be leaving yet another perfect review because I dont think this place will ever falter! Kudos to you guys!
