This restaurant is a cute and quaint place that reflects the vibe of Holland very well. Located on the downtown strip with many cute shopping places this place is a perfect getaway for brunch with friends. I went here with a fairly big group of people and due to the restaurant's small size we did have to wait about 45 minutes. However the wait wasn't so bad because we were in a very cute area. I only ordered a cinnamon roll because I wasn't too hungry. However the cinnamon roll was the greatest cinnamon roll I've ever had in my life. It was large and in charge, doughy and warm, drizzled with plenty of delicious frosting. I couldn't even finish the whole thing. It is very sweet and it reminded me of how my grandma made them. My friends enjoyed the breakfast they ordered. The food comes in large portions and it is very easy to share if you're not too hungry. First time in Holland MI and it's seemed like this was the place to get breakfast when staying in town so the wife and I gave it a try. After reading some reviews and hearing from some people the Hash brown omelette was the way to go, so I ordered that. Apparently you get a side of toast with that which apparently can include pancakes or French toast! So I was all like why would you get plain bread when you can get pancakes or French toast? Everything was good. The Hash brown omelet tasted much like you might imagine a large half moon hash brown and egg omelette stuffed with cheese, onion, and choice of meat. Can't say that the pancakes were that great. They were a little chewy but tasted okay. Ultimately this place is a diner. The coffee isn't that good the breakfast fair is good and inexpensive. You can eat a lot and feel full. If you are looking for a upscale and elevated breakfast/brunch spot this is not it. If you want good food for a good price then give it a go. read more

Loved this place!! Came from out of town with my bf to visit Holland for the day and came across Windmill on Yelp. Lots of great choices; it was hard to choose one! The cinnamon rolls are a staple and they are known for the hash brown omelet. Everything looks good. Smaller restaurant, so we had to wait a good amount of time before getting seated, but the wait was well worth it. Just a really good breakfast place with great food and overall "home" feeling. The Good: The Omelette was good. The bread was very very good. Thick cut and homemade, I'd go back just for the bread alone. I was impressed when I asked for some hot sauce, the server mentioned having over 20 different varieties. I tested him, and he came through with the semi-obscure type I requested. The coffee was also pretty good. Not so Good: My wife ordered the french toast. Not so good. The bread slightly tasted of onions, and the custard had cooked on top of the bread instead of soaking in. This is a great place for breakfast. If you are the kind of person that wakes in the up morning grumpy and looks at the world like you could punch it in the groin, then this place is for you. Once you get that first sip of coffee served to you by a Waiter or waitress that has such a great attitude and a smile that you swear is emitting sunshine, your morning will quickly turn around. I have tried many things here but my favorite is the corned beef hash omelet and homemade wheat toast. The Windmill blew me away! The pics of the hash brown omelette do not do it justice!!! It was amazing and a half! Got the cinnamon roll as a substitute for toast and was NOT disappointed. It's super sweet though, so be prepared! But this place nailed it on all accounts. The girl that helped me was great, got right in, and hot food just a few minutes after I ordered. We waited in the line outside the place, which naturally makes you think the place is worth waiting for. It was not. Its typical diner food, and mediocre at that. The name leads you to think it will have at least one or two Dutch options, but that also wasn't the case. We sat at the bar, and the entire bar of people who cam in after us or at the same time, cleared out before we even had our food. The other servers seemed great, but we seemed to be an afterthought to ours. The house made cinnamon roll came out and wasn't even warm. It was made hours earlier and wasn't even heated to be served. If I could give it a negative review I would. We sat for 10 minutes before I had to get up and ask if we had a waitress. 30 minutes goes by after she took our order and nobody had been back to our table. I asked to speak with the manager which I was hoping would turn it around and he was so rude. Not only did he cut me off mid sentence but he treated his staff the same way. He told us he would pick up the bill but made sure to mention there was nothing else he could do. I wasn't asking for free food I just wanted us to be acknowledged and waited on. My boyfriend and I finally decided to try this restaurant out after a recommendation from a friend. There was a line out the door when we got there and I was told it is usually always like that. You can't put your name in for a table. You just have to wait in line. We waited and were seated at the bar. The service was great. Very prompt and pleasant. We both got omelettes (I got the Holland and my boyfriend got the Spinach & Feta). The omelettes were good but we both felt like the food wasn't worth waiting in line (outside) for a table. After we ate, we found out that the bread was made in house so we ordered toast (we opted for no toast when we ordered our omelettes). At that time, the waitress also asked us if we would like to take our coffees to-go. We were very impressed that the waitress asked us then and were both very happy about it. I would of rated this restaurant 3 stars because the food is 'okay' but after the to-go coffee and after we sinked our teeth into the delicious amazing homemade toast, we turned the 3 star review into a 4 star review. The restaurant offers booth and table seating for mostly smaller parties. They also have a breakfast bar that is fun to sit at. After living in Holland for 17 years I have eaten at every restaurant & the windmill is the best of the best. On the weekend as a testament to their quality there is usually a wait on the weekends and events like Tulip Time. If you are hungry for the best food in town this is your destination. Awesome breakfast place in Holland. The only place open on the block before 10AM on a Saturday morning made parking easy and we quickly spotted the line. Hashbrown Omelette: Oh yes!! This is definitely worth trying after we read all the raving reviews. If you love hashbrowns and then having some meat inside of it, this is it. In fact, this entree was the highlight of my 4 days in Holland. Cinnamon roll: As everyone raves about them, it is true - these are good. The only tough part is that they are served at room temperature so my family boxed ours to reheat in the microwave at home. Service: Once you are seated and on your way, the staff is great. Providing insights into how big an entree is, what are the regulars' favorites, and doing their best to keep those drink glasses filled. NOTE: If you have a big group, it might be easier to order and take back to the hotel. The 1st day we waited almost an hour for enough seating to allow our party of 12 to sit together. Despite our 3 requests to seat us in smaller groups, the staff insisted on asking us to wait to seat us together. On Day 2 we knew - take it back to the comfort of our hotel. The Windmill is probably my favorite breakfast spot on the planet. It's a can't-miss stop any time I visit the coastline with friends and family. To get this out of the way right from the start: yes, there's almost always a line that leads out the door, but the Windmill is worth waiting for. Just be sure you dress for the weather. We usually just treat it as another opportunity to chat and mingle amongst ourselves, which is part of the reason we go out to breakfast together in the first place. The staff is very cordial and willing to meet your requests. If bar seats open up before a booth, they'll ask your preference before seating. We're usually willing to wait an extra moment or two for prime booth seating. As for the food itself - we're bread folks, and that's where Windmill delivers. I'd absolutely 100 percent recommend the homemade bread. Thick & fluffy, and so delicious. It's good enough that I can order french toast AND homemade bread and no one really bats an eye (even though I'm essentially ordering bread with a side of bread.) Perhaps best of all, this place is affordable, allowing you to squeeze a great deal of product onto your tab while still retaining a manageable price. I can't say enough. We were looking for a breakfast/brunch place in town this past weekend and came across Windmill. Very small seating and we waiting about 15 minutes for a table to open up but it was well worth the wait. The wait staff was on top of things from the start and answered a few questions on the menu. I'm a big Egg Salad Sandwich fan and went with that as soon as I saw it on the menu. Great choice because it was excellent with perfectly toasted homemade bread, lettuce, tomato, etc. and one of those meals I would choose time and time again if I lived in the area. My son went with the hashbrown omelet but it was just so-so. I took a taste and thought it was very good but he mentioned that it seemed to have way too much hashbrown vs. sausage. Just his opinion though. The other people in our group got the rolled pancakes (with blueberries) and a chicken salad. Both were excellent. Overall a great visit and I'm thankful we got there when we did because the line was way out the door by the time we left. Loved the atmosphere of the place! The Windmill is a classic. This place is known around town as the best spot to have breakfast. It's a small, cozy and traditional diner located in the heart of Downtown Holland. The coffee is unlimited, the cinnamon rolls are gigantic, and the staff is overly friendly. It's Holland, Michigan - of course they will be. PLUS, breakfast is served everyday till 2pm. The portions here at the Windmill are huge. Everyone who comes here usually orders the hash brown omelette, and it's enormous! Either come hungry or leave with left overs. I must add, if you're thinking of coming here on a Sunday for brunch, EXPECT a huge line. I've been to this place where the line is out the door and around the corner - even if it's in the middle of winter. And YES people wait. read more

I grew up in what was the Diner Capital of the US - New Rochelle NY where diners are still manufactured - and know a great diner. The Windmill is a storefront - not a manufactured building - and it's not open 24/7 - just 6am-4pm - but... This is classic great diner food in a hometown diner atmosphere, plus there are local twists - the homemade white bread, the bird's nest breakfast - that make it special. Downtown Holland is always worth the trip. Just add The Windmill to your visit. read more

Classic Holland restaurant. Hashbrown omlet and other similar offerings are great. Also, make sure you get cinnamon rolls in place of toast. The rolls are about the size of a person's head. Keep in mind that you can't make reservations and restaurant has limited space. For this reason, it is best to go during odd times (aka not Saturday morning). Like almost all other restaurants in downtown Holland, Windmill is closed on Sundays. All Hope students and visitors to Holland should try it out at some point. read more
