The League Tavern is a gastropub…read more "Gastropub". That word is so 2010's. A decade ago calling yourself a "gastropub" was the coolest thing in the hospitality industry. Now, it is a lost artifact of another decade, along with Swedish House Mafia and Britney Spears. The League calls itself a retro reminder of the eating clubs of the 1920's and 1930's. It is pretty damm good as a gastropub. It would not really want to be an eating club of the Prohibition era. Menus in that era could be pretty awful. Mashed parsnips. Liver and onions. Greens that have been cooked to death. Tough steaks. Low quality lager beer. The Indian Puddings were all right. The fish was great if it was fresh. I wish they would bring back Welsh Rarebit. But the League sticks to a contemporary menu ... And I am glad they do. Their contemporary dishes are just great. I had a faro salad with grilled shrimp on top. The faro salad was everything I would want a grain salad to be. (I have had some awful tabboulehs and quinoa salads in my time.) The shrimp were completely lovely. Prices are high - but that is what comes with being a gastropub. The concept is: Pay more. Eat higher quality. The Lakeway market will certainly support the League in the prices it wants to charge. The selection on the menu - and for that matter the selection at the bar - is fairly restricted. Having a small menu is not a necessary correlate of being a gastropub. Some gastropubs offer you an expansive range of choices. But careful management of the menu choices means that each and every dish can be polished to a high degree of execution finesse. Practice makes perfect. My guess is that the League envisions itself as a neighborhood place - albeit a rich neighborhood place. Their customers are likely to be regulars. The regulars order their favorite dishes over and over. I myself like my bars and grills to be Cheaper, Funkier and With bigger selections on the menu and at the bar itself. So the League is not exactly my style. But what they do, they do well. They are expanding, opening more branches in more locations. They can do this because the League fills a real need in the Lakeway-Bee Cave market. If a Lakeway resident were to invite me to be their guest at the League Tavern, I would be happy to accept that invitation. Especially if they were picking up the check.

The chicken is so tender and flavorful. Very fresh salad nice touch by adding fennel and orange segments. Comes with a delicious homemade ranch, but I also tried the lemon aïoli on the side. This is an upscale wants-to-be-better-than-fast-food roast chicken and chicken tenders place…read more They sell whole bottles of wine. Upscale beer is available as well as elegant Yuppie beverages. They have very good filtered water served for free in a nice samovar. I recommend the samovar. * * * I am likely to be fussier about Chicknic than are Bee Cave Residents. I would take those enthusiastic Bee Cave Resident reviews seriously. Factors that shape my not-with-the-crowd views on Chicknic. 1) It is actually harder than one thinks to do a roast chicken and chicken tenders restaurant that beats the competition because the competition happens to be very good. 1a) If you want chicken to die for, Your two best options are to go Peruvian or Guatemalan, All of which are available in Greater Austin. Inka, a Peruvian fast food restaurant on Wells Branch in the Pflugerville/North Austin nether land Makes some of the best roast chicken on the planet. Guatemalan chicken - which is done best if fried, can be found at Pollo Campero in Round Rock and the Buda/Kyle nether land. Pollo Campero is another experience not to be missed. 1b) If you limit the competition narrowly to American fast food chains, the chicken category actually has some of the most high integrity fast food chains in the country. Chick-Fil-A sets the standard for putting out good honest food in a fast food format. It doesn't hurt that they are ecologically responsible as well. They play "Southern Fast Food" because that is what they have to do for marketing ... but they are actually working at a higher level. Boston Market is more in the take-home-dinner niche. But they also turn out a high integrity product. 1c) The level of the competition means that Chicknic really has to be very good in order to beat out formidable rivals. 2) Bee Cave is seriously restaurant short. This is particularly the case given the high density of high income residents. So it doesn't take much to be a major contributor to the Bee Cave scene. Lakeway used to be that way - but Lakeway is finally fully restaurant stocked. Austin and Round Rock are rolling in restaurants. So us Yelpers from out of town can afford to be a little fussier than can Bee Cave Residents who for now are over a barrel. (Over time, Bee Cave will fill in appropriately.) * * * So what is my take on Chicknic? Under-salted. There is not enough alternative spice and not enough native flavor to make up for a basic lack of NaCl. Salt at the table would be a huge form of First Aid here. It could be fancy Pink Himalayan Salt from a gourmet store if management needs something more in sync with the ethos of the place. Strangely the sauce I had (the sweet sauce that comes with the tenders) does not provide enough spark to cover for the chicken. And sad to say, the tenders just are not all that interesting as chicken, given the other stupendous chicken dishes that are available elsewhere in town. It could be the roast chicken is better than the tenders. It could be that the alternative vegetable side dishes are stupendous ... Although - the salt question aside - my traditional French Fries weren't too bad. * * * I think management really wants to have a legendary classy place. Certainly, most Bee Cave residents are not going to drive to Wells Branch to get take out chicken to bring home. Locals give this place enthusiastic Yelp Reviews. I see their point. If you live in Bee Cave, believe your neighbors. If you are the type of person who eats all over the place, then you may be more in agreement with fussy old me.

Ordered the West Coast. Pizza had sun dried tomatoes. Artichoke, olives, and spinach. The crust was outstanding. Lightly golden and light crisp. I wanted to order wings, but they were out. So I got the mozzarella sticks instead. They were okay. The dinning area is nice. Their patio is epic. Really big, and the view is outstanding. I wish I knew of this place when it was a little warmer. That patio looks like the place to be in the spring, summer, and fall time. I we will be back for sure

I went with the chicken wings, I'm a bit of a chicken wing enthusiast and the wings were fantastic not too spicy, just perfect. I also had the chicken Alfredo and a Greek salad. Alfredo is definitely americanized but still really good and the Greek salad was huge even the small size. Overall, I was super happy with the meal the staff the food all of it period. We had the pizza delivered so our experience is based upon that. Out of all the pizza selections they had, we ordered two custom pizzas. For the first pizza we tried to do a veggie pizza. It was surprising how they offer a "Garden Veggie" pizza that comes with zucchini but you cannot order the zucchini when you build your own. And while they do offer tomatoes, also surprised they do not offer sundried tomatoes. So, we did the white garlic sauce with artichoke, red onion, black olive and mushroom. This was certainly the better of the two but the sauce and cheese were quite scarce. For the other build your own, we did pepperoni, sausage, mushroom and jalapeno. Again, the sauce and cheese was very scant. As already mentioned, the veggie was the better pizza and I would order with more sauce. The traditional pizza with the meats fails the "cheese pull" test. When you take a slice of the pizza and pull it from the pie, there was no visible cheese. Another odd thing is the slices are incredible small. They slice the pizza into way to many slices. Instead of a slice, it's almost like a bread stick. I worked in a pizza place throughout high school and the owner used to tell me the most expensive thing on the pizza was the cheese So, I kind of get being careful when they put cheese on the pizza, but sauce is one of the cheapest parts of the pizza so why do they need to be so scarce with sauce? I know I can order "extra" sauce, but it seems I would paying more just to get a normal amount of sauce. The same goes for the cheese. I would have to order extra cheese just to get the normal amount of cheese. Overall, the pizza is okay. But it's disappointing you cannot order something like zucchini as an additional item on a custom pizza when they offer it for other pizzas. Lack of sauce/cheese also makes this a place I wouldn't regularly go to. Last, the price. We knew how much the pizzas were going to be when we ordered, but them but for the price, these pizzas should have had much more sauce/cheese.

Free parking is available, but I am sure it's better to visit at night in the summer. We were 4 people, and after hiking, we were, I mean, hungry. They welcomed us and took us to the corner of the room, where families occupied a few tables. Since the tables were so close together, we just got up and told them we would sit outdoors. I was wondering why they insist on using only one side of the indoor dining room, since the rest of the room was empty. The outdoors were not that crowded. A family with their cute pets was enjoying the food and conversation. Thank God it was a nice breezy day. It was kind of a late lunch/early dinner time, so we decided to try a few things. Since we have never been to this place, our server recommended a few things. I was craving a burger and salad. Please take a look at the pictures. The food was not bad, and the service was very attentive. We ordered dessert with ice cream and enjoyed the ice cream more than the actual dessert. At the end, one of us went to the bathroom and came out fast, and said, " Don't use the bathroom. It's very dirty. That was sad. We took two hours to get here, and now we need to find another place to use the bathroom and wash our hands. So are we going back? I don't know. Front desk help was ok, could be friendlier. I mean, just a welcome smile will be appreciated.
