Disappointing dinner evening. I took a friend for dinner at the restaurant for his birthday. We ordered special Filet Mignon of the day, but was served the normal fare instead of the special. We ordered dessert for two, but was served dessert for four. The waitress was inept and incompetent, and didn't even know what was in their menu. Though the front desk knew and confirmed several times that my dinner companion was the birthday person, the waitress failed to recognize that and didn't provide any special birthday dessert. I fault the management for hiring inexperienced wait staff and not training them. The meal was expensive, and we received poor service. And to top it all, the food was ordinary, not exceptional. My husband and I both really enjoyed our dinner at Winston's! Our friends have been telling us about this spot for awhile, but we had just never headed on in before last night. For a Wednesday night they were quite busy and our room had a large party of 14 going on. Wouldn't hurt to make a reservation in the future to ensure you won't have a wait. I got the Salmon Cesar Salad and it was great, super flavorful and the fish was cooked perfectly. My husband got the Winston's Burger and he devoured it. We were both looking for some classic American fare and Winston's had an extensive menu that did not disappoint. I have been here numerous times throughout the years! I love Winston's! The only reason I give it four stars, is because I wish their menu was a bit larger. Winston's a bit pricey, but pretty worth it! I love their bar - it has a great ambiance and also provides bar booth seating. The restaurant is spacious, clean, lovely, and good classics/oldies are always playing, which I love! Service is almost always impeccable as well. As far as their menu - great drink/wine selection. For food, everything I have ever had here has been amazing. Their brunch is delicious. They serve the most delicious blueberry muffins with brunch. I have also had the omelets, quesadilla, and eggs Benedict - all amazing. Regular menu items that I have had include the Sesame tuna salad, BLT salad, and black and bleu salad. I love their salads - huge, filling, fresh, and delicious. I usually would get steak or salmon on the BLT salad. The jam jam shrimp and crab dip is great for appetizers. Other entrees that are amazing include the filet mignon and chicken pasta. Their burgers are AMAZING, chicken salad croissant wonderful, and they have some of my favorite fries! I wish there were a few more entrees to choose from but everything is great that I have tried and always consistent. Lastly, they have a Bananas Foster - it is insane. Overall, a pleasant meal and experience. Nothing was exceptional but I wasn't disappointed by anything either. I came with a large group of ~15 for a birthday dinner. They don't have a private room, but they seated us in a more secluded area which was nice. It's a popping place so I was fairly impressed by the service. Our server did forget about us every once in awhile but if I requested anything, she made sure to follow through. Food was pretty good as well. However, I found many of their dishes leaning toward the greasy and bland side (Like their crab cakes, chop steak, chicken special) I guess I didn't pick too well off the menu, but it was still tasty don't get me wrong. Had a very nice meal here. Large portions, great service, but a little on the pricier end. My husband got the fried green tomato salad, my mom got the Monterey chicken sandwich, and I got the BLT salad. All were good. The dessert tray looked heavenly but we were stuffed. read more

This restaurant had a really nice ambiance and great staff. The crab dip was pretty good as well as the warm rolls that we were offered. I tried some of the fries as well and they were really good. I had to remove stars because of the shrimp and grits because they were very off putting to me. They did not really look too appetizing in the way in which they were plated but that wasn't too big of a deal. The shrimp, the main part of this dish, had a very weird smell to me and I am not sure if it was the seasonings or the shrimp itself but it made it difficult to eat. Altogether, the taste of that entree was not very great. I am in no shape a picky eater but I could not finish my meal. Trust me, I've tried the burger, salmon, pasta, crab dip, sushi, crab cake salad, health nut salad, and Cajun chicken sandwich. My husband hates the food here but obliged me by driving from Clayton to get my favorites brownie. Our thinking was that we might as well grab dinner too. Nope, not today. Not ever again. The restaurant is large and dimly lit, but not too dark. When we were seated it was really cold, but after a little bit it warmed up. I got the chicken pasta, my mom got the bone-in pork chop with a maple bourbon glaze, mashed sweet potatoes, grilled corn, and green beans. My sister got a grilled chicken Caesar salad. We all shared, and everything was wonderful! For dessert we got Heath creme brûlée, a gluten free chocolate torte, and key lime pie. All were equally as amazing! We have driven by Winstons numerous times and said we should try it and finally did for our anniversary. Our biggest regret is that we didn't go years ago. Even though it was a Thursday, the restaurant was packed. Everything about it is first class-the food, the service, the decor and the clientele. We both had the shrimp and grits ($16.95). The shrimp were perfectly cooked with a multi-flavored sauce atop a smooth, creamy bed of grits. While we don't normally get desert, we did share a Bananas Foster which was huge and splendid. This restaurant is an old standby, but they manage to keep it fresh by having changing menu items paired with a solid lineup of classics. I'm a sucker for the ribeye paired with the hand cut fries, but honestly, I've never had a bad dish here, and I've been eating at Winston's for well over a decade. Part of what makes the place great is the staff - you see the same faces time after time, and they bend over backwards to give you great service. Besides the prime rib, the crab dip appetizer is in a class by itself - one of the best appetizers I've eaten anywhere, not just in Raleigh. Cheesy, gooey, and not in anyway healthy, but you will find yourself eating it by the forkful after the toast points run out. Also, save room for dessert, especially any of the ones paired with their homemade ice cream. Like some of the other reviewers here, I'd definitely suggest reservations if you're going on a busy night - the waits here can get to be north of an hour on Friday and Saturday, but if you've made a reservation, you will be seated at the time your reservation is set for. read more

My first time at Winston's. I made a reservation 24 hours in advance, advised the Hostess it was a special evening for my adult daughters Birthday. She stated she would note the reservation. Upon arriving, we were greeted professionally, escorted to a large, overly cool (temperature) dining room and seated by an outside doorway. I immediately requested another location. When I quietly confirmed our Birthday plan, my server had no idea what I was talking about. OK, a breakdown between hostess stand and server, even though I had confirmed arrangements early in the Afternoon. Our server was pleasant, but seemed, initially, to immediately want our meal order. We delayed dinner order opting for an appetizer and beverages. Upon bringing those items, again she asked for our dinner order. I deferred again opting to enjoy what had been served before placing our dining order. When we did order, the meal was served timely, well prepared and hot. After dinner our server brought the single special B'day dessert without prompting or asking if anyone else would like a dessert. We were able to order deserts which were excellent after a long wait. Here is my take away: nice restaurant, good food. If this is an upscale restaurant, my service level did not match the reputation. Oh, prices on the menu were consistently higher than prices on the menu shown on the internet site. All of the issues are within attention to detail or maybe I just expected too much. read more

We have lived in the Raleigh area now for 2 years, we moved from the southwest area of Michigan near the lake. I have been trying to find a restaurant that serves a very good prime rib. I am still looking after our visit to Winston's Grille. We started with the bruschetta bread and tomatoes, basil, garlic, olive oil and goat cheese with a balsamic glaze. It was okay at best, it was lacking in flavor and it was light on the balsamic glaze, could not taste the garlic. We both ordered the house salads with the creamy balsamic vinaigrette. The creamy balsamic vinaigrette was very light in flavor, next time we will order a salad with the balsamic glaze on it. I ordered the Prime rib which I have been dying for. I noticed right away when they put my dish on the table they it was more of a gravy type liquid on it then au jus. I ordered med rare with extra herbs and spices, well I got medium with pink through out and it lacked flavor. My wife ordered the Asiago Chicken stuffed with dried tomatoes and crab meat. My wife said it was delicious. She also ordered the Winston's Creme Brulee for take home and said that she loved it. I had a Long Island tea and wifey had a plain Margarita on the rocks. Both drinks were very good so the night was not a total bust. Our bill was just under $120. a couple items were over priced. You should not have to pay over $30 for a good prime rib and my drink was $11. We will probably go back as I would like to see the full menu and there was some other items on the menu that I may like to try. The server was great and came by often.
