Finally , a Ma-la-tang in Fort Lee. Came out here for a weekend brunch and found the place to be quite empty. Just like any other Ma-la-tang, you have your choices of meat and vegetable. Here, everything is kept in a open cooler. From a quick glance, I've found the vegetable and meat to be of pretty high quality, no welted leaves or defrosted meat or anything like that, which is usually the first sign I look out for. We decided try both the dry and soup version and asked for mild spicy. Between the two, I highly recommend the dry version because it's much more flavorful. I did find the spicy level to be somewhat toned down. Same goes with the oil situation in the dry version. I usually like mine stirred with a sinful quantity of chili oil. Other than that, the ma-la-tang is pretty decent, still a bit away from what they serve in Flushing. read more

You fill up your bowl with meats, veggies, and other ingredients such as noodles and rice cakes and they cook it for you, either in a hot pot or "dry" hot pot. The hot pot is basically a soup (spicy only) and the dry hot pot does not have a soup base and is cooked with spices and you get to pick how spicy. My husband and I had the dry hot pot. Mine was "tiny" spicy and my husband got the medium spicy. My husband said that his was tasty but the spices were a bit overwhelming. Mine was surprisingly tasty and mildly spicy. Service was good and veggies were fresh. I give this place only 4 stars because I felt that it's a bit pricy. Lunch was $34 plus tip for both of us. They add a $2 charge for the dry hot pot because it's served with rice. The individual dishes that we didn't try were around $14 on average which I feel is a bit much for a weekday lunch. read more

Worse experience ever!!! We were there around 5pm on a Friday night. The place just opened up and people were being seated (no one was eating at all!!). We were standing at the door way for good 10 min and no one greeted us, instead, a girl server started to talk to people who came in after us in Mandarin. She asked them how many people and told them she is arranging a table for them. I speak fluent Mandarin but my husband doesn't, so I seldom speak to others in Mandarin when I'm with him. So, when I approached the girl and asked her what should we do (in English), she replied "I don't know" and walked away. I'm not sure how is this place operates, but I'm pretty sure I'm in a country which the primary language is English. Anyway we left the place before any further aggravation. Extremely underrated - everyone should give this place a try. There's no other place in Fort Lee that is similar to Wok Bar. You can choose what you want to put in your soup/stir fried hot pot, and they charge you based on the weight of the items you get. You can also choose the level of spiciness which is great. The vegetables here are as fresh as you can get!! I got the hot pot version - mild spicy, and it was delicious. It's always flavorful but a hit or miss whether or not they add enough salt. It's not even that i like salty food but without salt it tastes bland even though there's many seasonings. This is the only restaurant of its kind which I've found before crossing the GW bridge. I live in upstate NY so I'm really glad they opened up this place! Alright now let's start with a review of the signature Mala tang, and Mala xianguo. Basically both are the same except one has soup while the other doesn't. Mala tang has soup, Mala Xiangguo does not. You choose the ingredients yourself from a variety of vegetables, meats, noodles, and fish balls. There is really a large selection so you can customize the pot a lot! The ingredients seem to be decently fresh when I went. But the main thing is the spices which they cook your hotpot with! It's very tasty and quite authentic from what I can tell. I like the Mala Xiangguo (dry hotpot) better btw. Prices are $9.99 per pound of ingredient, it's not a bad price. But to have the dry hotpot you need to add $2 and it comes with a bowl of rice. For the normal hotpot it doesn't come with rice. There are also skewers and other Chinese dishes you can order. Some of them are quite spicy so be careful if you can't handle the spice ;) All in all I definitely recommend this place. Try it out for sure read more

My BF and I popped in this evening for a late night bite. This place was perfect because we were able to create our own size bowl of food which we were not looking for anything too big. The staff was super friendly and helpful as they could see it was our first time there. We were able to load up on lots of veggies and we picked the lamb and beef as our protein. We were super happy with the dish and I loved the large pieces of ginger and garlic and had the perfect amount of spice. I've been waiting to try this place since it opened. Finally got a chance to try it last night, and I'm glad it's a new addition to the fort lee Asian food scene. They have a unique concept of a combination of hot pot where you get to handpick ingredients yourself and place into a bowl. Once it's its chosen its weighed. You are charged by the weight. From there you have a choice of them either cooking it with soup or having it stir fried with a level of spice of your choice. They do the cooking for you. I tried medium spicy on a soup dish and shared a stir fry dish and it was just right with the spicy level. The decor is nice and modern. All in all it's definitely a place to try out if you are looking for a new experience. So far this is the first of its kind in New Jersey. Very authentic malatang, something that's becoming super popular all across China but rarely found in the States outside of the busiest parts of Chinatowns. This isn't hot pot where you cook your own food at the table. Instead, you choose your own ingredients in a bowl (think veggies, noodles, mushrooms, protein, etc), weight it at the counter and they cook it for you as a stir fry or as a stew with szechuan flavors. I got mine with enoki which just soaks up all the flavors. A ton of umami in every bite. They have kebabs too (including lamb kebabs) though those are a bit less authentic but still good. Entrees on the menu too though most people there ordered the malatang from what we saw. Friendly and enthusiastic service. Owner stopped by and offered us a complimentary tasting of a new cold noodle appetizer dish they just added to the menu and it was delish! Will be back! read more

This place just open a few weeks ago and it's already getting great reviews. I have to agree that it's very tasty and would go back again. We did take out by going to the restaurant and pick up the ingredients then decide how it gets prepared. It's either cooked dry or with soup. We went with the dry option and it was great. One benefit of ordering pickup at the restaurant is you can mix and match the ratio between seafood, meat and veggie instead of picking one choice when ordering over the phone. I love to eat spicy hot pots and goes to Chinatown or flushing to get eat it. A friend introduce me to this delicious place around New Jersey. It sells spicy hot pot that you do not cook yourself. You just need to pick the meats and vegetables and the chef will cook it for you. It can be cooked dry or in soup. I order the spicy dry hot pot, spicy hot pot and young chow fried rice. It were better than I thought. The price was reasonable and the service is great. Definitely coming back for more and happy don't have to go so far for the spicy hot pots! I was able to split one hot pot with my friend and we were both full at the bottom of the bowl. The total was under 17 dollars! Flavorful, and actually spicy. The broth was a bit thicker than I hoped but it was still delicious. Also, I'm not sure what the name of it is but there are these thick glass noodles that I highly recommend adding to the mix. There is a good variety of fresh ingredients (meat and vegetables). But the issue I had was the soup. I don't know if it was just my order...maybe they spilled some seasoning into my soup...but I have never had any food where over the course of eating it, I started to lose my sense of taste.
