Sadly Wokuni has changed. While the place was packed, our meals were sub par. We each ordered the Chirashi bowl for lunch. What they describe as 3 types of fish ( salmon, yellowtail and unagi) only the salmon had flavor. Plus there were 3 miniscule pieces of unagi). The vibe of this restaurant is one of my favorites! It's a perfect date spot or a nice dinner with friends Ambience: we ate at the sushi bar and I loved it! I can see the chefs making all the rolls and other food! Despite being very busy, you don't feel the crowd because of how this place is laid out and the lighting! Food: we ordered a bunch of small plates! Some of the most interesting ones were the uzake, where the eel was a really good texture. The ebi gyoza is a perfect dumpling. The couple of sushi rolls we ordered were also pretty good! Some of my least favorite dishes were the agedashi tofu, i don't think the dashi is my favorite flavor. You can tell the ingredients are fresh and high quality. Service - great. checked on us appropriately, and was available if we had any questions or needed anything. I went to wokuni to try the chef's sushi omekase, which was a chef's preselected tasting menu and rotates frequently based on the season. There were 9 courses and all were generally good. My favorite one was a fish series of three in which each piece varied from lean to fatty and from unsalted to briney. I definitely left rather full and enjoyed most of the pieces, but I wouldn't say all dishes were equally transformative or unique. I really only loved 2 of the 9 dishes. At such a high price ($150 base, but nearly $200 with taxes and tip), I just don't think it was worth it when dishes included tempura, soup, and basic avocado rolls. Most pieces were fresh, but there is only so much freshness that can be in sushi if the pieces are sourced from Japan to NYC. Knowing there are so many more affordable (and well revered) or more notable omekase places at that same price point in NYC, I would not recommend the omekase from Wokuni. Perhaps I will return to try something on their a la carte menu, but I find that unlikely as well. Beyond the food, service was okay. Our server explained every plate in depth, but I felt like we were not attended to as often. Initially we were at the bar waiting for our table to be prepared, and the bar tender did not come over to take our drink order until we explicitly called him over. Perhaps just an issue of being understaffed, but I hope it improves. The decor creates a very cool atmosphere. read more

I stopped by Tuesday night close to 7pm. It was pretty crowded but still had a few open tables. The ambience is very nice and the interior decoration is beautiful. I ordered the Kaiden Hitsumabushi, which was a bed of rice with a variety of marinated raw fish, tamago, and shiso slivers. The server informed me that there were three ways to eat the dish. The first way is to try it on its own. The second way is to add the provided toppings -- fried shallots, puffed rice, and wasabi. The third way is to pour dashi onto the rice to create a rice porridge. All three ways were delicious! On its own, the dish was light but still flavorful. Adding the toppings made the dish have more interesting texture with the crunchiness of the rice and the kick from the shallots and wasabi. Eating the dish with the dashi was comforting and full of umami. This was probably one of the best raw fish bowls I've had in New York! read more

Got here at the end of Happy Hour. A beer and fried chicken for $10 - what a steal. We were in casual sushi mood, so it was a bunch of rolls. We tried mostly the spicy ones, which were all very good. The fish was very flavorful - the rolls were packed nice and tight, not like a suit of armor made of rice. We really liked what we had but something tells me, that's not even really their best stuff. Would like to come back to try more. I've read the restaurant has a fish farm in Japan. This allows them to sell much less than others. The menu prices are quite low for many of the premium cuts of tuna. $13 negitoro/torotaku? These rolls are usually around the $18 to $20 price. read more

This is a great Japanese restaurant in midtown. Stopped by here for lunch and had two of the lunch special platters, each for around $25-29 and each comes with edamame, a tiny salad, and miso soup. I had the grilled salmon and we also got the Bara Chirashi fish medley that sits on top of rice (and opted for the additional fish eggs). The food was very good and I also had a happy hour Asahi beer for only $5. The first thing I must add is that while my party arrived on time, I was 30 minutes late because of the holiday traffic in the city -- even on a Sunday morning! Been wanting to try out Wokuni for the longest time and honestly they did not disappoint! Located in Murray Hill, Wokuni is quite a hidden gem - the front entrance is a bit inconspicuous when it comes to announcing that this is a Michelin plate restaurant. When you peak in, you'll see that it has a grand interior with dimmed lights and large shelf of drinks. We ordered the Kaisen don (classic!) and 7 sushi rolls that were much more than we expected. The ingredients in the Kaisen don were ever so fresh - and we were still quite full sharing it between the 3 of us. They give you a few ways to eat it too: just the bowl itself, or adding some broth into it, or the fish and rice with dry rice balls and pickled sides. All three were delicious! Loved that it could be eaten three ways too. The sushi rolls were also much more than we thought, as you'll see from the photo. Lastly, we had called and asked if we could get a candle for our dessert since it was our friend's birthday, and they did just that for us. However, my pet peeve - The flavor for limited Wokuni don seems to gear towards more Fusion than Traditional, lots spicy/hot flavored food in my bowl so I guess this is more towards Non-Japanese customers. I stopped by Wokuni for lunch on a friend's recommendation and I am so glad that I did! Wokuni is a great place to get quality Japanese food at a reasonable price. I ordered the Bara Chirashi lunch set and opted to add ikura. The fish was very fresh and Wokuni was generous with the amount of fish included in the chirashi. With regards to the other items included in the lunch set, the dressing on the salad was tasty and the miso soup and edamame were a nice touch to round out lunch. Not only was the presentation of the lunch set absolutely beautiful with all of the different colors, it also tasted great. It's always a bonus for me when the food I order looks just as amazing as it tastes. People will definitely ask you where you went to eat if they see a picture of the Bara Chirashi. I am always looking for good Japanese food at a price that makes it sustainable for repeat visits in the future and Wokuni is definitely one of those restaurants. Great food! We got their tempura udon and the steak hitsumabushi. Their udon broth has a great flavor that easily topped the udon I've had. Plus, their udon also tasted different from a normal udon. Tempura was fried into perfection and no complaints here. The steak hitsumabushi was top notch too. The beef was really tender and soaking it in tea was beyond delicious! My god this is the best value sashimi/sushi restaurant I've been to so far in NYC. This is considered "high end" but the prices are not bad at all considering what they give you in their sashi bowls. I ordered the wokuni set and it seems to be a popular choice as everyone else was ordering it. They do however have limited sets per day so I recommend to go early. The fish is flown directly from Japan and is fresh! I don't particularly like most sashimi except salmon so I asked if I can replace the other fishes which to my surprised they accommodated! Most places don't usually replace the fishes or if they do they'll have an additional charge. Service was great and the ambience of the restaurant was nice and high end. Their lunch combination sets are such a great value; they give large portions, lots of fresh and delicious sashimi and they are priced very fairly! I wanted the Wokuni Don but they were sold out (only 8 made at lunch) so I substituted the one (can't remember the name) that had five different kinds of fish and that was amazing (they only make five of those at lunch). My mom had the bara chirashi and they make cute little lunch boats for kids at $13!! The lunch boat came with salmon, ikura, and the egg sushi, edamame, fruit, shrimp tempura, chicken karaage and had some treasure underneath. A really awesome idea for kids and my son loved it! You get 8 large pieces of assorted sashimi, a generous serving of ikura, and spicy salmon tartare over a bed of sushi rice. The wasabi is even the freshly grated sort, which means you can really pile it on without it being overwhelming.
