This review is for delivery only. Wokuni is a hidden gem for sushi lovers! The quality of fish at Wokuni is unbeatable for the price range, especially in the Midtown area. The kaisen-don, which I believe is only available for lunch, is the best sushi meal one can find for under $20. You get 8 large pieces of assorted sashimi, a generous serving of ikura, and spicy salmon tartare over a bed of sushi rice. The wasabi is even the freshly grated sort, which means you can really pile it on without it being overwhelming. The quality of the fish is much closer to what you might find at a $250pp omakase than a "cheap" sushi spot in a similar price range, which makes the $18 kaisen-don and other offerings truly a steal. read more

Pretty solid spot for quality, fresh, tasty sushi! The staff is very attentive, friendly and accomodating. They really gave me the impression that they prided themselves on being professional and dedicated. We had a very easy time reserving and dining on a Saturday evening. We both ordered the sushi "platters" - 7 sushi 1 roll and they were very accomodating with substitutions if we didn't like something. I also ordered some nigiri on the side (salmon and yellowtail). All of the pieces were fresh, flavorful and delicious. Rice was great - warm, didn't fall apart at all. I will be back to this place for sure! read more

Five stars for the food. It's not easy to find good and fresh Japanese seafood restaurants in NYC that don't break your bank. The menu is quite extensive although not the most creative, and if you are a sashimi lover like me, you will find many good things here. Highly recommend their lunch sets. I was very satisfied with the quality, presentation, and portion sizes of the food given what I paid. I understand that restaurants went through a hard time during the pandemic and many, including this place, are understaffed right now while trying to reopen to full capacity. The service was a bit slow but I can tell all staff members were trying their best to take care of a full house during lunch service on a Saturday. FRESH authentic seafood straight from Japan! The place doesn't look much outside but the inside is just amazing. The vibe, service and food was amazing. I'm a big seafood person and very careful where to spend on things like this but this place deserves more than 5 stars. We ordered the "Kani Nabe" king crab hotpot for 2 and it came with udon, soup and veggies. We complemented this with "Sake" king salmon and "Chu Toro" medium fat tuna and it the food was more than enough to make us full and more than satisfied. Honestly worth every penny. While the food was good and the waiter was professional, the owner or manager who went around greeting everyone was clearly avoiding us. Considering the other guests he was greeting were speaking Chinese or Japanese or white speaking English, and we happened to be speaking Korean, I figured he had issues with our ethnicity and thinks it's ok to be discriminatory. You're in the US and we're Americans bro get it together. Considering all the anti-Asian sentiment we just went through it's disappointing to experience what we experienced. I don't recommend this place if you're going to openly speak Korean. Maybe just stick to English or be white or non-Korean. I know that I have to give them a 6-star review, but yelp only allows 5. Wokuni is my fave, everyday Japanese restaurant for max satisfaction. The food - everything is AMAZING! The quality of the food is consistent, and they give you the best they can offer every time. I honestly love dining in here, but being able to get their take out during the entire pandemic has been a lifesaver. I thank you guys for keeping open and making good food. Some restaurants I loved don't and can't deliver the same quality of food. This is so important that you guys are sticking to your principals. I am in heaven every time I get my Wokuni fix. I think the quality of the food here is comparable to those in Japan. If you are looking for a bargain, come here during lunch. The price is fantastic for the food you get. Their "fish market" items are so good too. I always get their unagi (grilled eels), scallop sashimi, tuna, salmon, uni, or whatever they have to offer to treat myself. The food was delicious here but I knocked down 3 stars due to a bad service experience. Friends were visiting me from out of state and I made a reservation for omakase because they had never tried omakase before and really wanted to. On my reservation, I specifically said we were all doing omakase. When we got there, the staff said they don't do omakase for lunch hour. I don't understand why no one told me this when I made the reservation, or when I called to confirm the omakase specifically? This was a disappointment to my friends and also to myself. Another negative point is they were closing the kitchen in 30 minutes. Why would they allow you to book a reservation so close to the kitchen closing time? We were rushed to order, and then rushed to eat because it was closing until the dinner service. Despite making a reservation several weeks in advance for lunch, the restaurant had run out of its namesake Wokuni-Don (assorted sashimi with shrimp tempura). Their QR-coded menu was unwieldy and the animated server -- rather than recommending similar alternatives -- told us to go back to the QR code menu to "look at the pictures"? The Bara Chirashi we had instead was oversized and had "chopped and diced" fish along with uni and ikura, which had too many competing flavors and a less-than-pleasant combination. We visit this spot for lunch on a weekend, for their lunch special that is also offered during weekend. The inside was really beautifully done, modern and sleek, with minimum decoration. The high ceiling made the space to look and feel much bigger. The hostess was non-Japanese female, but most of other staffs were Japanese. Our lunch order come with salad, soup, and small appetizer. They were brought out first. The appetizer was edamame. I ordered Bara Chirashi set for me. It looked beautiful, like a sparkling jewel box (or a jewel bowl?). It definitely had the "WOW!" factor, from the size, colorful look, freshness of ingredients...everything. I was in heaven... For my hubby, he wanted the special item that is only offered five a day! We made sure to get there before they opened for the day so that we can ensure to receive this dish. It is called Wokuni-Don, and is made with assorted sashimi with shrimp tempura in one bowl. It had a generous amount of super fresh sashimi pieces, fluffy eggs and some tempura pieces. It was like the king of lunch donburi! Our server was not overly friendly, but very polite and efficient. We were well taken care of, we had a great lunch here. Japanese food is life, and this sleek 'n' chic restaurant is your birth canal. Get ready to get born! The fancy decor is fortunately not reflected in the menu prices, particularly if you come for happy hour, where glasses of wine are $7 or you can order an appetizer plate + wine for $10 (think kaarage chicken, etc.). The sushi is a bit smaller than I'm used to, but pretty well-stuffed with the good stuff. Service was attentive and friendly. We loved the tamago so much we made three orders and fished them all. The only thing I have to say is that the server never smiled and was very very serious. I don't know if it's an authentic Japanese restaurant standard service thing or he was just unhappy that day. But he was very attentive and professional; I did appreciate his non-chatty manner. Favourites of the night included the maguro tartare, ebi tempura, and steak. The steak with the garlic crisps was delicious and the flambé makes for a nice little show! They have happy hour daily and our party just made it to the restaurant at the end of happy hour and the waiter was nice and let us squeeze in a drink order! Went for Christmas dinner with my boyfriend. The greeter was so sweet and kind (She gave the cheeriest "Merry Christmas!" I've ever heard). Ordered so many appetizers. The spicy and creamy shrimp is what the name advertises. Juicy shrimp that goes "boing boing" in your mouth as you chew - slathered in a slightly sweet and very addicting sauce. The salmon and avocado is alright, but go with the maguro tartare if you want a salmon and avocado appetizer. The long island roast duck is juicy with excellent hearty flavor, but wish the skin were a bit crispier. And the sashimi (5 kinds) is a beautiful exploration of all kinds of the freshest raw fish. I came in for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. The place was pretty busy. I got a seat at the sushi bar which i preferred. A few of the lunch menu items I had wanted were sold out already. I ended up ordering the Daiginjo bara chirashi which was their premium chirashi. The premium pieces were uni, scallop, and crab. There was a chopped up shrimp tempura as well. The quality of the fish was good and it's a large amount of food. Miso soup and edamame were included as well. It was a good meal and I'd come back to try some of their other items! We went to wokuni for a 9:30pm on a Friday night. We were welcomed by the name on our reservation and seated promptly. The moment we got to the table we were told we had to order immediately because the kitchen closes at 10pm. That was very anxiety inducing since the menu is so expansive. We took about 15 minutes to look over the menu and had to put everything in at once. We are the type of people that order over multiple rounds as the night goes on, adding as we go, so ordering everything at once was not fun. This also caused problems for our seating arrangement because we were seated at a both and the kitchen pumped out all the food ASAP and our table was not large enough to accommodate everything. We essentially had to rush to eat things so that they could take the plates away to put new dishes down. The restaurant was close to empty but we were never offered a change of table to accommodate space. We also ordered 3 servings of chicken thigh which never came and when we asked we were told they had run out. We were never informed of that and by the time they told us, the kitchen was closed and we weren't able to put in an alternative order. Our server was nice but the logistics of everything was terrible. I don't think they should offer a 9:30pm time slot on opentable unless they can provide a comfortable experience. The food itself was enjoyable to the extend that it can be when having to eat it quickly. The sashimi and sushi was standard but not the freshest I've had. We got a variety of their blue fin tuna and I think its priced higher than at other restaurants of higher quality. I did however love their uni. It was probably the best part of the sushi/sashimi. I liked the sweet jumbo shrimp, but jumbo is a generous term. We got the octopus carpaccio which was delicious. The butter scallops were small and overcooked. The king crab hotpot was also delicious and very cute. I liked the subtle but flavorful broth. It's a portion size that would be good to share between 3 people. We got the 7 fields sake which was sweet and I would get again. Overall I think the service made me view things in a poorer context. Best of all, they even have a little market selection of sashimi, grilled fish, and accouterments if you want to make it a sushi night at home! They have a great happy hour, a reasonably priced omakase (used to be around ~$75, but is now $110) and delicious sushi. The service is excellent and the vibe is very trendy Japanese. It's straight from Japan, and one of the more casual restaurants that is part of the Tokyo Ichiban Foods group. The interior is really nice! more on the upscale side with dim lighting all around. They're not open for lunch right now, but I think they will be in the future. Our waiter was great and gave us suggestions on food and drinks. We all got the 7 piece sushi + roll meal, which is $29. We also shared the chicken skewers, tempura, and omelette for appetizers. - Chicken skewers: on the dry side, $9 for 3 - Tempura: 2 pieces of shrimp per order and quite a bit of extras. I liked this one the best. It was fried perfectly! - Omelette: it sounded really good because it is served in a fish broth. I thought it was just ok, but was a nice light addition to our meal TBH I was a little disappointed with my sushi in particular. They brought out each plate one by one. Everyone's looked identical except for mine. The roll it comes with is a salmon roll, and for some reason mine had spicy mayo drizzled all over it. My salmon and tuna pieces also looked different compared to the others (see below) - not sure how to describe it, but it did not have the fatty streaks and were more bright in color. We asked a different waiter, just to make sure, if this was how it was supposed to be served because it was so different compared to the other 5 we ordered. He assured us that all the pieces were the same, but he stumbled a little when naming the fish because I think he was also a bit confused? He also couldn't address the spicy mayo because he thought everyone had it, but realized mine was the only one. Overall, I thought it was pretty good for the price. But the sushi seemed a little 'cheap' with the spicy mayo and the off-looking/tasting pieces of fish. Would I come back? Had lunch here with a friend and we were initially impressed by the portions. I had the Kaisen Don which had large pieces of sashimi. The problem is the pieces were too large and not sure if the chef was an experienced sushi chef or not but the pieces seemed to have been sliced incorrectly rendering of the pieces a little too chewy. The rice was also a little too oily for some reason. The most important part to a sushi meal is the quality of the rice. Did I read somewhere they had to downgrade their rice due to cost? Due the size of the portions, my friend and I couldn't finish our sets. We both added ikura to our choices for $8 which made our sets over $30, not a bad deal but the quality and difficulty with this amount made it not so enjoyable to eat. The miso and tea surprisingly helped offset the richness of the dishes. The place was beautiful and service good though. I first discovered this place when I was looking for somewhere to buy fresh Toro in the city. They have a little section in the front that they call the 'fish market' where they sell cuts of sashimi for takeout alongside other side dishes they have. The fish they were selling was super fresh so I knew I had to go back to dine-in. I was expecting much from a tofu and avocado salad but this was actually really good and I would order it again next time! -7 piece sushi and 1 roll platter- all the fish was fresh and for the roll you can given a choice between tuna, salmon, or yellowtail -Kaisen Hitsumabushi- The star of the night! The waiter explained to us that there was a special way to eat this. The dish is first divided into four portions, the first portion you eat as is, the second portion you eat with various sides provided to you, and third portion you eat with a broth, and the fourth portion you pick whichever way to eat!
