I'm not sure how I feel about this but it I think it leaned more towards "burnt" than "pleasantly charred" chicken wings were crispy and juicy but bland cucumber tofu was bland, and tofu texture was gritty / sandy ... Chinese broccoli dish was crunchy and fresh but again bland ... And these dishes and 2 beers came to about $80 for 2 this place is definitely a little too cool for school .... better off going with a more OG vibe read more

Love that this is a family owned business. I originally came a while back when they first opened and got to meet the mom. I haven't been back as of recent and it turns out my son really loves this place. He's such a picky eater but here he will mostly eat everything. Our go to dishes are the fried rice, the vegetarian noodles, chicken wings, tofu fish cakes, any of their dumplings (especially if they have a specialty), and we recently tried their pork belly over rice (which is amazing!! The pork is super tender) I don't think you can go wrong here, and if you're non Asian this is definitely a place where you can try anything and you'd probably like it. read more

On some Tuesdays, Woon hosts B'ivrit, an Israeli vegan pop-up where they collaborate on some funky inventive creations. The Woon x B'ivrit menu has some really experimental things going on and the dishes change. Naturally, we had to order everything. * 5 Spice Falafel Bao: A giant round falafel stuffed in a bao, genius! The falafel is crispy and brown on the inside with a golden chickpea center seasoned with five-spice powder. The steamed bun is also filled with julienned carrots, cucumbers, pickled vegetables, and cilantro. * Cold Tahini Chewy Noodles: The noodles are firm, long, and indeed perfectly chewy. They are served cold and coated with tahini sauce. Fried soft cubes add a contrasting texture and the mint perks up the flavor. Think of this as a great riff on traditional cold sesame noodles. Woon's Mama's Way hot sauce goes great with the noodles. * Green Tahini Pistachio Gai Lan: Gai Lan, or Chinese broccoli, is steamed and the tender green stems are placed in a bright green tahini sauce studded with pistachios. Squeeze the lemon wedge to brighten the flavor. * Coconut Knafeh: Knafeh is a dessert of shredded phyllo pastry soaked in syrup and baked normally with cheese. Here they have used coconut to achieve the familiar gooey center with a different flavor profile. Parking: The lot at Woon is tiny, but there is a ton of easy street parking in the residential streets. Ordering: Walk ups and dine only. There might be a line out the door. Pork bao was deliciously tasty with crispy veggies. Overall very fresh , tasty and satisfying. About 30 seats total inside. Parking is on street but Tuesday 10-1p is street cleaning. This place has been all over social media, and I wanted to see why. After having it, I'm convinced everyone that likes it has never had other Chinese food before. It is incredibly overpriced for its small portions, and lackluster food. The beef noodles and the wings were just good, but the scallion pancakes were some of the worst I've ever had. The chairs are uncomfortable and the tables are wobbly. To top it off, their water is served from a tap in the wall. I would not recommend this place. read more

This place is a hidden gem that I am now adding to my spots for which I am willing to brave LA traffic to visit. First and foremost, the food was delicious and filling. I haven't tried everything, but everything I tried was amazing. Second, the service was awesome. They were accommodating and friendly; we originally ordered food to go but when I saw the cute outdoor seating - both patio and sidewalk-- we had to stay and they were totally okay with putting our food into regular bowls and serving us at the table. Woon in a hipster-minimalist Chinese restaurant in Filipinotown. While it helpfully labels all its vegan options, most of the dishes fell flat and I won't be back anytime soon. We started with the chilled cucumber & tofu ($5) which tasted fine. The wood ear mushroom & bean curd stick ($5) sometimes tasted good and other times not, depending on how much vinegar you got in a bite. Northern Cafe (a mini-chain in the LA area) has similar dishes but does a better job with them. Same goes for Joy in Highland Park. The soy veggie wraps ($6) are basically egg rolls but wrapped in fried yuba (tofu skins) instead of a rice or wheat cover. I thought the outer skin was too chewy/rubbery and the interior filling lacked flavor. The gai lan (Chinese broccoli) can be made vegan ($8) and disappointed us. I hated the flavor of the sticky sauce they covered the gai lan in, and the vegetable itself was overcooked. Similarly, the veggie noodles ($10) consisted of overcooked noodles, mushrooms and bok choy with an off-putting grilled/smoky flavor. The noodles were also way too chewy. If you're looking for better Chinese food in the area, Fat Dragon on Sunset is your best bet. Pine & Crane is also hipster minimalist but suffers from the same problems as Woon. read more

It's been a minute since I had a genuinely original noodle dish, but Woon really impressed with their fantastically chewy Beef Noodles. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Woon is a cute little neighborhood shop, and they're staffed with cute little neighborhood folks who are happy to explain the concept to you. The menu is simple and the food comes out quick. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $11.00 will get you a medium portion of Woon's signature noodles, and $5.00 will get you sizable pork bun. You should probably get both like I did. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I'll start off by saying that the Pork Bun was just okay. It compared to Bao Haus in my opinion and fell just short of the lightness and fluffiness that you find at say Ippudo. Having said that, this trip was about the noodles, and the noodles didn't disappoint. I'm not sure how Woon does it, but their noodles have this unique chew that I'm not sure I've had elsewhere in Los Angeles. The chew isn't just a texture thing, but it laps up the sauce in the same way that homemade pasta laps up Italian sauces, and it all went together nicely with the Bok Choy and sliced beef. I had lunch at Woon with my friend Bret H. a couple months ago, and I definitely feel overdue for a second visit. I could not believe how good this place was--my mouth is watering a little bit now remembering the bao and the noodles. We met up at noon on a Tuesday and the place was pretty quiet. There was no line to order at the counter, and service was great, friendly and fast. It was nice out, so we sat on the patio, which was pleasant, cute and relaxing. We both work from home, so we decided to make the most of it, getting a couple of draft beers. I forget what was on tap, but I think it was some kind of pale ale. I enjoyed it, whatever it was. The food was absolutely delicious. We shared an order of the pork belly bao, and honestly, I could've done with my own order, and maybe two or three of them. I've had a lot of pork belly buns over the past ten years (I feel like they were all over the place for a while, thanks to David Chang), and this might have been the best of them. The slow-braised pork belly was fatty and rich with a lovely lacquer, and it came with mustard greens, cilantro, and fantastic house-pickled carrots and cucumbers on a steamed Chinese bun. You could do worse than coming to Woon and eating pork belly buns and nothing else, but then you would miss the beef noodles, which are also superb. We each got our own bowls, and this was a good, if somewhat gluttonous, call. The noodles were outstanding, perfectly chewy with a little bit of crisp, stir-fried with marinated flank steak, bok choy, and shiitake mushrooms. Woon recommends having them Mama style, mixing in chili garlic sauce and white vinegar. I followed this advice happily and ended up with a wonderful flavor bomb of a noodle bowl. We shared an order of the fried rice, and this was great, too: white and black rice with Chinese sausage, Chinese broccoli stems, egg, and green onion. The rice had a nice, nutty texture and I liked the sausage and broccoli stems. This wasn't as amazing as the buns and the noodles, but it was good, and tasted even better the next day, when I microwaved the leftovers for lunch. I was so happy with them that I actually texted Bret to let him know he was foolish for relinquishing his share. If any of this sounds good to you, you have to get over to Woon and try everything for yourself. It's hard to do this food justice without forcing it into your mouth. [Review #429] 2019 Yelp 100 Challenge (81/100) OTM Club 06/09/19-06/15/19 It was a bit of a drive to redeem this week's offer from OTM Club/Woon: Mama Fong's 5 Spice Chicken Wings. Before Woon opened up a restaurant, it was a home-style pop up Chinese noodle cart serving fresh noodles, baos & specials -- a simple Shanghainese influenced menu. The restaurant is located in the Westlake area on the corner of Temple St. & Reno St., with only 1 compact parking space & 1 handicapped space. There's plenty of free street parking on the opposite side of Temple St., but Reno St. was filled by residential parking so watch out for fast traffic when you cross the street to the restaurant. Chill vibes & decor with easy-going, friendly staff. In addition to the OTM Club offer: MAMA FONG'S 5 SPICE CHICKEN WINGS [五香炸雞翅], I added WOOD EAR MUSHROOM & BEAN CURD STICK [涼拌黑木耳腐竹], BEEF NOODLES [牛肉粗炒麵] (chewy noodles, marinated flank steak, bok choy, shiitake mushrooms), & FRIED RICE [臘腸炒飯] (white & black rice, Chinese sausage, Chinese broccoli stems, eggs, green onions). The wings were the family fav, & the best dish of the group; the wings were somewhat small but were crisp & had good flavor. The fried rice reminds me of my Dad's rice (he used white jasmine rice only, peas, diced carrots, & corn) with a twist of black rice & broccoli stems, except this was really greasy (there was about a couple tablespoons of oil at the bottom of the takeout carton. The beef noodles could have been a really great dish too if it weren't for the overwhelming amount of oil. To make superb noodles, an important factor in the cooking of noodles is 鑊氣 ("wok hei" aka wok fire), & cooking over a high flame while stirring quickly without shredding/breaking the noodles. The amount of oil needs to be precise, or the excess oil or dry texture can ruin the dish. My Dad says well-made noodles are a great way to test the skills of a chef in Cantonese-style cooking. While this is no 乾炒牛河 [Beef Chow Fun], the method of cooking the noodles is similar. I added the garlic chili sauce with vinegar to add some oomph to the dish, but these noodles have wwaaayyyy too much oil that I'm more cognizant of that over the other flavors. =( I liked the mushroom & bean curd salad; it had decent flavor but I would like a tad more acidity. It's a small portion for $5.00 where I can usually get 3 sides for the same price. :-| Due to WiFi issues, my cc was ran 4x so I have to wait a couple of days to see how many times I was charged. The restaurant is small so the limited menu is a great idea, but execution needs some work... a solid 3.5 stars with potential to serve truly great homestyle Chinese food. Couldn't feel luckier than to have moved into an apartment within walking distance of Woon. Have not had a less-than-perfect experience here yet, whether it's been pickup, dine-in, or one of their awesome collaborations (shoutout to Bungkus Bagus!!!). A focused, family-drawn menu where every single item is an absolute banger. Our first time we ordered one of everything and we have a hard time not doing so on each return trip! Chewy beef noodles, tofu fish cakes, smashed radishes, and wood ear mushrooms are a combination that takes me to another plane of delightful existence. I live close to Historic Filipinotown now and have noticed a new addition to Temple Street! This turned out to be Woon and oh my, am I glad my sister and I had the chance to have lunch here last week! Cute corner spot with both indoor and outdoor (patio) seating. Parking wasn't too bad at all in the surrounding neighbourhood. In addition to the food displayed on their menu, they also sell favourite childhood snacks like Yan Yan and Hello Panda! There's also a fridge full of canned drinks one typically finds at Asian supermarkets like 99 Ranch or Nijiya Market. We ordered from the counter and were given a number to place on our table. It's pretty much first come, first serve so feel free to choose whichever table you'd like. One Yelp reviewer mentioned they bring complimentary spiced nuts to your table as you wait for your order? Didn't happen to us. Maybe a one-time/only sometimes thing. We ordered three things to share: Beef Noodles, Chilled Cucumber and Tofu Salad, and Fried Tofu Fishcakes. For drinks, we grabbed a Singha Soda Water and Royal Milk Tea. Everything was absolutely delicious! The noodles were our favourite. They were made even better by adding chili and vinegar, as per our server's suggestion! We couldn't get over how chewy and tasty the noodles were. I also liked the smoky flavour, which made me think of Pad See Ew. Hm I do wish the serving was bigger though. Perhaps a family size option for those wanting to share? Mmm mm mmmm. Woon accomplishes what many restaurants fail to do: keep up with the times. They've invested in a modern vibe with tasteful seating with both single tables and communal. The lighting is perfect especially during golden hour allowing you to snap a crisp clean photo of the food and venue focused on minimalism. You do the marketing for them since it's hard to resist sharing those images. The food is not unique but they create a unique experience telling the family story and reminding you add chili and vinegar to your bowl to customize the flavor to your liking. It feels comforting. It distracts you from realizing that you just paid $43 for basic Chinese take out food for two people. The actual noodles aren't too special. They were a bit softer than I'm used to, but it was a good texture that slightly mushed together. For $11 you get a single bowl. For the same price you can find the same dish that could feed 4 people in a venue more east, but less.. photogenic. Same amount of oiliness, same vegetables mixed in. Same same, but different... atmosphere. The baos are fluffy and the pork belly is thick. The $9 for two pricing is enticing since it allows you to share with your eating partner. The $9 Gai Lan is flavorful, but also too familiar. And people love it because it feels warm and "clean." You're paying for the experience and it's worth it sometimes to pay for something familiar in the context of something more welcoming and with a higher LA restaurant grade. But at least I come out full compared to a certain porridge spot down the street trying to achieve the same. read more

Since moving from my hometown to LA I haven't yet found my comfort food, but Woon may be it. The minimalist decor and menu makes it easy to choose and exist. We ordered the beef noodles, rice, and chilled tofu cucumber side. You see everything being prepared and it's served with the same warmth/encouragement to dig in that I felt in my favorite childhood restaurant. I can't wait to try the buns and bring my vegetarian friends here for the veggie noodles. They have a fridge of canned drinks to choose from, like tea, and some beers at great prices during happy hour. read more

I really wanted to love this place, and while I had a great time, I wasn't especially blown away. I think this review would make the most sense if I broke it up into two different sections - 1) atmosphere/vibe and 2) food/price. I LOVED the interior of this place. Parking is okay, there are a few spots, but not a ton. I think there's a lot of street parking though. The inside of the restaurant is fairly small, but they have a ton of space on the patio outside. The interior is very thoughtfully decorated, and you feel so calm and at peace as soon as you step in. The atmosphere is also casual and laid back, so it's a great place to chat with your friends/hang out. The food was pretty good. But, I will say that the portions are extremely small. The beef noodles were chewy, but the portion was so small for $11. I think our serving should have been at least twice the amount they served us. They were also dry - not sure if it's because they brought it out a little later, but if there were some sort of mixed sauce, or if they served the sauce separately so guests could mix it themselves and eat it fresh, I think it would've made the world of difference. We also ordered the fish tofu (which was good, but it wasn't as crispy or hot as we expected), the soy paper egg rolls (which were also good, but I think the soy paper absorbs a lot of oil - as soon as we bit into one, oil gushed out), and the baos. The baos were exceptionally good, although I think the pork could've been a bit more tender/chewy. I think that in addition to the sriracha, I would've appreciated it if the cashier had made notes or drawn attention to the garlic chili crisp or other sauces/condiments provided. Lastly, we also ordered the fried bao ice cream dessert, which was delicious, although also slightly expensive for what it is. I think there should be 1.5 or 2 scoops of ice cream in the bao because the ice cream to bao ratio was off. I think this place is a solid 4. I would bring my friends if they wanted someplace chill after work, and I know that they just opened, so I am excited and willing to see how they improve in the months to come. I am happy to see more places like Woon pop up close to where I live (Koreatown). The establishment is clean, modern and hip with outdoor seating included. They serve Chinese food with a little twist, as well as beer which is a plus for me. We ordered the beef noodles, pickled radish, bean curd and wood ear salad, and the chinese broccoli. Beef noodle - I thought this was going to be a noodle soup, but it was a stir fry. I enjoyed the flavors of the beef noodle, but the noodles were too doughy and tacky for my liking. I wished they were chewier. Pickled radish - crunchy, vinegary goodness. Love pickles to cut through the savory noodles. Wood ear and bean curd salad - the flavor was there, but I felt it needed to be amped up a notch. Chinese broccoli - cooked and seasoned well. You can't really fuck this one up. I am swoonin for Woon, really honestly the best meal I've had in a super long time. I can eat there forever. I had the -Radish salad: Super simple but really well marinated and sooo satisfying -Earwood mushroom salad: I love earwood mushrooms they are my fav of the mushroom family, this was really good -Chinese broccoli: The Chinese broccoli was good to perfection super fresh and had just enough crunch -Beef Noodles: I think the noodles were housemade the beef was tender and the flavor was off the hook. -Pork bao: the fluffiest bun ever with a super flavorful pork and the veggies topped on were the perfect addition. Lil soft, lil crunchy, flavorful goodness. Nothing was disappointing, everything felt like it was curated for an awesome mix of flavor and texture. Seriously really good, the best Chinese food I've ever had. EVER. The staff was also super nice and attentive. I look super forward to coming to Woon again. I was bummed that my BBQ joint closed down but was excited to see a Chinese spot open up in it's place. Overall, it was good, but a few things stood out Food: I got the bean curd and cucumber - haven't had this since I was a kid, not bad. Got three veggie noodles, similar to my mom's but the noodles were a little doughy/undercooked and super greasy. Not sure if the cook was rushing because it was so busy. Flavor was still good. Then we got the fried tofu fishcakes - I love fishcake but never had it this way - pretty good. Price: reasonable but not cheap. Portions are a little small for what you pay. Think tapa / dim sum sized dishes. Alcohol: this was BULLSHIT. $11 for a tiny ass glass??! Service: really good, nice, responsive and helpful, pretty fast too Ambiance: nicer than the BBQ joint before it, tables are first come first serve so it's a little frenetic waiting and jumping on an open table.
