This was one of the first places I 'discovered' in the Cincinnati area. It quickly became a favorite. Everytime I go, I get the same happy feeling when I enter the bar. It is just the right blend of friendly, hole-in-the-wall, and hip. It isn't trying too hard. The menu doesn't scream for attention. It's just comforting and homey food set in a random dark corner in Covington. The picnic table seating makes it even cozier. And you can catch live music, too (though it can be loud). I guess the VW bus shell on the back wall makes for a good photo op. read more

Fantastic! The bartender was very knowledgeable about food and alcohol and her recommendations were spot on. We both started with Westaphan beer which was so refreshing. We then ordered some beer cheese and a pretzel. That beer cheese was some of the best I've had and that was the largest, thickest pretzel I've seen. I ordered the Turkey Reuben and my boyfriend ordered a bacon cheeseburger. Man, like their pretzel, these sandwiches were not only delicious but massive. My Reuben probably had a 1/2 pound of tender, smoked turkey on it. Amazing! And my boyfriend's burger was juicy and flavorful. I definitely recommend this place! I came here because of the incredible ratings on Yelp. I must have come on the wrong day because this lunch went from great to horrible in a hurry. We started out with a giant pretzel with beer cheese dip. The pretzel is pretty good, not great (they have better ones at the Cincinnati Zoo in my opinion), but I'd still recommend. The beer cheese that comes with it is super tasty. It is slightly spicy in a good way. When you've finished the pretzel save the beer cheese to possibly use later. Next came the pierogis. Now these are special. They are potato filled, as is commonplace, but are so fresh. What is not commonplace and turns out to be a great idea is that they blanket them in a sauce with onion and bacon. I've never had them made this way, but they are definitely on to something here because I don't want them any other way now. At this point in the experience I'm thinking I'm on to having one of those lunches you leave and tell everyone about, including strangers and drifters on the street. But that wasn't meant to be. We were still waiting on the homemade sausage made in house and the Wunderburger. We waited. And waited. Then we waited some more. Over an hour after we ordered they finally came. And, it was apparent why they had taken so long. By the looks of them the cook must have had a night job at the crematorium. These meats were extremely over cooked. The kind of over cooked where one small bite of them takes all the moisture out of your mouth. Add to that the fact that you have to go back to the bar and wait indefinitely for a refill. I was parched. Couldn't eat either one of the meats. The worst sausage I've ever had. The worst burger I've ever had. Again, based on the reviews here this must have been an anomaly. But, based on my experience, I can only recommend the pretzel and pierogis, and would avoid the sausage and burger. read more

Excellent Brussels Sprouts, braised cabbage, currywurst, and much more. Mixed crowd of "everyday" folks, hipsters, and neighborhood locals. No pretense, just good food. Tip - don't sit by the door in the winter (if you have a choice). Would be a FIVE star if they had table service, but to their credit, there's a sign on most tables letting one know there is no table service. I suspect there's no room for servers. read more

I'd heard lots of good things about Wunderbar, but somehow had never given it a try. I finally ventured in this last weekend for brunch,- me I'm so happy I did! The gal at the bar was working alone and 100% needed another set of hands, but she was holding it down amazingly. It was pretty steadily busy on the bar and the kitchen side, with most tables full. We got a rueben and the French toast, and both were incredibly tasty. Totally worth the wait. I'll go back when the weather is nice to sit outside and try some more of the menu! read more

Wunder bar at is a hidden gem in Covington. Went for a Sunday dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and space. Das ist gut! Wunderbar is a quirky, little bar/gastropub in an interesting neighborhood in Covington. We decided to try it out after reading that they made vegetarian sausages and had huge pretzels. After an early evening playing with the kids in Smale Park, we walked the mile and a half across the suspension bridge to check it out. First, I have to say, I wouldn't do this on foot again. The walk is through a few fairly, gritty blocks once out of the main streets. Also, everyone was stuffed with carbs after dinner and unable to make it back across. We had to send my friend's husband to go get the car in Cincinnati. The narrow, dark interior reminded me of one of the places in my old neighborhood (Germantown) in Louisville. You order at the bar from a menu on chalkboards behind the booze and find a seat. There are several picnic tables set up Hofbrauhaus style, so you'll get to know your fellow patrons quickly. There's also a back patio, but we didn't venture out since the walk made us amply sweaty and thankful for A/C. We ordered beer and two pretzels with beer cheese to start. The beer was cold and the pretzels were ginormous. Crisp on the exterior and pillowy on the interior - perfect! The beer cheese was warm and the consistency of queso, unusual but we liked it. They were out of most items, bartender said it had been an unusually busy afternoon, so we went for the pierogi, specialty sausage with roasted cauliflower, a potato cake, Brussels sprouts, and a burger with house fries. The pierogi were huge and looked handmade. Stuffed with potato and covered in a cheesy, creamy sauce, they almost put me in a food coma! The veggies were good, but a little salty. The verdict on the sausage was very positive, but the kiddos filled up on pretzel so had to take their very large burger home. Next time I'm in Covington, I'll stop back by. Aside from our hostess/bartender being a low key bombshell this burger was 10 ounces of succulent beef. The only way to eat it is cut in half and sideways like a taco (without making a mess). I was so hungry and it was cooked to order. When it came out had it been alive id've killed it myself. This burger completely satisfied the carnivore in me. I found his place accidentally after another burger spot I went to was closed until June. There's a German theme complete with German beer and paraphernalia but I couldn't partake because I was on my lunch break. They did look appetizing though. I'd love to go back here. I have heard nothing but good things about this place so I'm surprised the food was not good. I ordered schnitzel sandwich with red cabbage. The sandwich tasted like a formed breaded patty that you can get by the box-full at Costco. The texture was that of a processed piece of meet. The best part of the meal was the cabbage. Also had a burger that was ordered medium well and when we got home it was still bright red and bloody. Had order of pierogies and I'm not an expert but they where very soggy and mushy. We headed into Kentucky to go to Wunderbar for lunch on Saturday. Their menu seems to be ever-evolving based on current offerings, but from what I could see on their Facebook photos, the food options looked promising. Sadly, I was disappointed. They no longer had the veggie sausage - they did helpfully point out the couple of other vegetarian options. Yay, another portobello sandwich. :( They also explained that there was no table service - you order at the bar and they bring the food to you. So, we ordered our lunch and seated ourselves at one of the large picnic tables that fill the area. We got the Giant Pretzel to start with - and that is not a misnomer. This sucker was huge. We made a good dent in it, but we still had plenty to snack on over the next couple of days. It paired perfectly with the beer cheese - we ended up getting another cup of beer cheese to go with us so we could dip the rest of our giant pretzel later. With limited entree options, we went with the portobello burger with a side of potato wedges and potato salad. The burger comes on a pretzel bun, so it is thicker and heartier than most buns. The ketchup that comes with the fries is interesting...it almost tasted like 'Indian-style?' The husband speculates that it had cumin in it. While I was impressed at the size of this pretzel, nothing else of this meal really stood out to me. I wanted to like this place more than I did, but that is mainly because of the lack of vegetarian options. The staff is super-friendly though, and they mentioned that they make their sausages from scratch or get them locally from Findlay Market. So, not for me, but still worth checking out! read more

I had heard so much about the place. It is a bit of a hole in the wall with great atmosphere, a German, alpine feel. Not there for the charm, which it has and the food was VERY good. They make a variety of wonderful sausages and their seasoned potato wedges are a must. Neighborhood joint where every head turns when you walk in but everyone is so welcoming. The bar tenders know the regulars, and the people are friendly. Yes, the location is less glamorous if you're used to downtown glitz, but just come here for the food. The Pirogi are to die for (you can have them as a side). I wish I had known about the Pretzel dumpling before I ordered... but that would just made the choice between the available dishes so much more difficult. In our day of firsts, it was our first time here. It's a great local bar with personality everywhere! We got the pretzel and beer cheese. Having previously had the pretzels at Braxton, we already knew we wanted one. The chef came out with just finished bacon slaw for us to try... It was delicious! We popped in for brunch after a night of drinking, and I fell instantly in love with the cozy atmosphere & live jazz band. I ordered a beer & after seriously considering the entire menu, I went with the pork schnitzel sandwich. Folks - it's hands down the best schnitzel I've ever had, and I consider myself well-seasoned in the ways of German food. My partner ordered the big breakfast and it was divine. Thanks to Yelp nation for turning us on to this little gem in Covington. 13 of us invaded for lunch and the sever worked her butt off to keep things moving with our sudden entrance and a bar full of regulars. German festhaus-style menu with homemade sausages, pork schnitzel, Reubens, burgers, eclectic sides and the most incredibly humongous pretzels served with a literal pail of garlic beer cheese. Wunderbar takes all of the glorious simplicity of a small American gastropub and puts in into a small German village with authentic sausage, sides, and beers. Wunderbar doesn't try to confuse you with overly complicated foreign menus nor do they try and make it too hipster and dilute its German mystique. Overall a very enjoyable experience and one I would definitely recommend. Let's go a little bit more in-depth... the bar is fairly small comprising of a 100 ft long room with the bar/stage on one side and one long biergarten table on the other. Very intimate setting. The sausages are amazing. You have the opportunity to choose from a variety of meals with combinations of sausages and sides. There are 7 or different sausage recipes/sauces to choose from and they are quite tasty. I would personally recommend the currywurst; you can never go wrong with a good currywurst. I also have to recommend the giant pretzel which literally is giant and measures 14" wide with a diameter of 2". The bier is the weakest link, nothing special and it didn't detract from the experience. read more
