This is an iconic restaurant in a historic building. It is full of personality and has a great staff. If you pay attention to the daily specials, you can do really well in terms of value. Sunday's pork chop dinner for $19 is regularly priced at $42, for example. (Please see my photo of the daily specials board.) That said, this former bordello does have some downsides, which I need to mention: First, it is too loud -- nothing sound-absorbing in the place, and the jazz music recording was turned up the day we were there. This caused communication problems with the waiter, who misheard me, and I really couldn't hear what he was saying. This is not an intimate spot for deep conversations. Second, parking is a challenge. No parking lot. There are some spaces across the street along the railroad tracks, but not enough. I parked on the other side of the tracks and hiked over the rails, but that is a little dangerous. There are some $ 5-a-day parking lots up the road. Is the pork chop better than Perry's? I liked the mashed potatoes, and the meat was properly prepared for sure, but the seasoning was not exactly right for me -- I think they added cinnamon, though my wife thinks it was allspice, and a hint of sugar. An East Texas sort of flavor--I prefer Perry's. But a close second for sure. Allec, I can't find your card, so I know I am spelling your name wrong, but you were a great waiter, and so I am giving this shack a 5.

Amazing Service from start to finish!! The waitress even offered to take us on a tour of the upstairs rooms/museum! Ask for Zoe!! She's the BEST! Hubby thoroughly enjoyed the appetizer trio with sausage balls, cheese curds, and fried pickles, but his FAVORITE was the double cut chop!! It was juicy and tasted more like a ham than a dry chop! The elote was a hit and he ate so much he made himself sick. I liked the appetizer as well, but was really happy with my wedge salad and mushroom soup!! I also had a slice of beer bread with honey butter, and it was good but not as notable as the rest! Great "saloon" feel in an old building that has been open for 100 years as a brothel, restaurant, hotel, and saloon! Big screen TVs in the bar for the sports fans! Go Astros!

Wunsche Bros Cafe & Saloon has been here since 1902. The sign on the building says so, the front room leans into the history with wood walls and staircase. Everything else has been either redone or remodeled to death. Nothing feels or looks old, the bar area looks downright 2000's hipster industrial. The bathroom was genuinely cool though. As a history teacher I'm giving the decor a D. Once again, the wife and I had some errands to run in the Conroe area. I decided on Wunsche Bros, a place I've always wanted to try. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. We ordered beer bread for an appetizer, a Caesar Salad, and the Chicken Fried Steak with Mac and Cheese for the entree. The beer bread was okay. It was dense and had a good flavor but I've had better. Beer Bread gets a C. The salad had identity issues. The lettuce was a little limp. The dressing, and parmesan cheese slices were top notch though and that kept it from getting a failing grade. Caesar Salad gets a B-. The Chicken Fried Steak was good. The breading was crisp around the edges, and held up against the gravy. The steak was firm but not chewy.. The mashed potatoes were velvety and creamy. I liked the chunks of skin. They felt like they were marinated in butter. The Mac and cheese was a let down. They tasted like elevated Kraft macaroni and cheese from the box covered in seasoned breadcrumbs. My wife said everything was too salty for her and after contemplating I had to agree. Chicken Fried Steak: C+ Mashed Potatoes: C- Mac and Cheese: F Service gets an A. The wait staff was very attentive and worked quickly when my wife spilled her water. Overall it finishes with a C minus. I liked Old Town Spring and plan to go back but I won't go back to Wunsche Bros. There's other places to try and this place didn't make the cut for traditional "must do" places. I had high hopes though. *extra credit- crispy mashed potato bite: good combination of the mashed potatoes and crispy fried breading. It gets a C minus. Beer Bread Steak Sandwich: beer bread is too dense, not recommended! It gets a D minus.

Our first time here. But I can tell this place is normally a solid 4‑star spot, although today's visit was a 3‑star experience at best--mostly because the small, meaningful touches just didn't happen. Birthday Misses: I told the staff three times that we were celebrating my kid's birthday. We got one quick "oh, happy birthday" at the start, and then... nothing. No candle. No card. Not even a simple "happy birthday" when the cake we ordered arrived. I actually had to say as a prompt, "we have to order a slice of cake since it's her birthday," which felt like pulling teeth. Even a tiny acknowledgment when dropping off the dessert would've made her day. Service & Knowledge: I think this came down to our specific waiter--clearly new and still learning. I saw other servers who looked fantastic, but ours didn't even know what sides came with the steak, and couldn't answer basic questions (including the ghost stories my kid was excited about). Food Notes: * My kid's steak was ordered medium rare, but came out very rare and blue inside--see pic. I would've loved it because I love Pittsburgh style steak. But my kid don't like it when the meat is still kick'in. * The whiskey cake wasn't sweet or chocolaty, which is unfortunate because that's exactly what my kid loves. Her review: "Wait... that was chocolate?" * The half‑priced pork chop was excellent--right up there with Perry's!! * My mashed potatoes had cold pockets, which was odd, though most of it was fine. Atmosphere: We were seated in the half of the building that previously burned down. It's very obvious which side that is, both on the inside and outside. We asked about hauntings (my kid was hoping for a fun story), but our waiter didn't seem to know much or want to embellish. Final Thoughts: I still recommend this restaurant--like I said I can tell it's usually a strong 4‑star place. But today, between the missed birthday moment, the undercooked steak, and the uneven service, I feel it just didn't reach its usual standard.

A true Texas legend started over a century ago when two local brothers Charlie and Dale Wunsche, opened a Hotel, brothel and saloon for the railroad workers and travelers. The business thrived until prohibition when it was sold and became a café in 1949. Today we came to try the popular $19 pork chop special. They have wonderful daily specials. They do have wonderful starters such as sausage and sauerkraut balls and Texas style queso. The fried green tomatoes are fabulous. Numerous burgers and sandwiches. They have campfire fair such as house smoked sausage and stuffed poblano peppers. Traditional entrées, such as chicken fried steak and fried catfish. They have steaks and their double cut smoked pork chop. Tons of southern sides, such as southern collard greens and squash casserole. You might wanna end your meal with their famous whiskey cake, which started being served the day after prohibition began to use up the rest of their whiskey. Yummy! Lots of seating but the parking is definitely a premium. If you're looking to throw a gathering, they do have an event and party space downstairs as well as upstairs with a rooftop lounge and patio. Charming but also a bit loud for dining conversation. We did receive fabulous service from Allec! Enjoy

Modern restaurant with southern vibe. Service and atmosphere: This is modern and well designed restaurant and bar. There are plenty of seating options and different rooms to hire on the second floor for special events. The place was clean and organised. Our server SiSi was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Food and drinks: Good menu options. You can choose here meat and seafood dishes , salads, sandwiches, and desserts. We enjoyed our mains, mashed potatoes with wasabi and seared ahi tuna, and fried chicken plate. Good seasoning and flavours. Chicken was still succulent and had perfect amount of crunchy breading on the outside. There is full open bar where you can order beers, wine, and signature cocktails. Pricing: $$/$ - the menu items were priced fairly and the experience was worth it.

The service at our table was amazing. Harmony made our evening special and memorable. We decided not to order appetizers to save room for other items. We ordered their beer bread which was just ok. Nothing real special in our opinion. We ordered a Caesar and House Salad. There were very good. My wife ordered their beer bread grilled Salmon medium rare and she thought it was great. I ordered the smoked sausage and it was good, but I thought the food temperature should have been hotter. The white bread on the side is really unnecessary. The portion was great, and the grilled jalapeño was phenomenal. I could have read the menu wrong but I thought the onions were supposed to be pickled red onions, and they weren't, The ambience was nice. It is an old salon and the nostalgia is dripping all over the place. All the employees were encountered were super friendly. We ordered the Pecan Pie dessert and it was mediocre in my opinion. I don't drink alcohol and normally order cranberry juice. If you want a juice refill you are charged for it. I came here for a Yelp Elite event about a year ago, and this is the first time I had a full dinner experience.

One of the best pork chops of my life was had today at a haunted hotel and brothel built in 1902. They hand cut their French fries like Fritos scoops and are amazing! Famous squash casserole was surprisingly sweet but good. Sweet potatoes are praline sweet! Expensive but you're paying for quality.

We stopped in and ordered a variety of appetizers to share. Standouts were the cheese curds, Cesar salad and pork bites. It is a historical building with lots of charm and fun decor. From the moment we walked in, the experience was top tier. Our server Hannah was incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed -- customer service was A1 I ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and mac & cheese, paired with a non-alcoholic hibiscus margarita and BABYYYY ‍‍‍ FYE DOESN'T EVEN COVER IT. The food had that perfect home-style comfort feel, seasoned just right, and cooked to perfection. My mom had the fried catfish and fries, and every bite was crispy, flavorful, and so well seasoned. You can tell care goes into the food here. If you're looking for comfort food done right, a welcoming atmosphere, and great service this spot is a MUST. We'll definitely be back!

Today was my third time visiting, and honestly, it was the best experience yet! We came on their Wednesday pork chop special night. My husband and I were in a time crunch and only had about 50 minutes before our next plans. Our server assured us we'd be fine -- and she was right! Our food came out in about five minutes, which absolutely amazed me. My husband's pork chop was massive, tender, and full of flavor. The apple butter paired perfectly with it. I ordered the chicken fried steak, and I can honestly say it's the best I've ever had. The portion was generous, and the mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious -- especially with the steak. The mac and cheese was simple but still tasty. We also tried the Wunsche Mojitos -- they were sweet and refreshing (I just wish it was a touch stronger). Our server was fantastic! I didn't catch her name, but she had such a great personality and made the whole experience even better. Can't wait to come back again -- and enjoy our leftovers tomorrow!

Excellent service and excellent food. We hung out in the upstairs bar for a bit listening to music, having a few appetizers (please add more bar food to the menu !) with friends (5 of us) and then moved downstairs for a great dinner. We love the place and the service is always great ! read more

I am really trying to like this place. I've been several times since it reopened. The original was famous for its burgers. They have burgers here, too. They aren't cheap so I expect them to be good. But EVERY SINGLE TIME, they aren't. They cook the hell out of them. Not burned but also not juicy or flavorful. They are dry and sawdust. To me, this is inexcusable. Any decent restaurant should be able to cook a good burger. I've had the pulled pork and chicken fried steak. Both are good; better than the burger. However, it is the burger that I come for. Service is usually mediocre: not bad, not good. Drinks are a saving grace and they are usually pretty good. I'll come again. It is a convenient and good place to eat in Old Town Spring. But the restaurant scene is picking up and Wunsche needs to up its game or it will lose customers. read more

We had a very pleasant experience as this was our first visit since they reopened after the fire. We had a large group of 11 but were seated after a short wait. The staff was super nice and helpful, and did not make any mistakes with the food. The burger was every bit as good as I remember it, same with the beer bread. The fries were not my favorite style, kind of like homemade potato chips, perhaps a tater tot option would be nice to offer. The older side of the restaurant was very well preserved, the lower section was very modern and austere by comparison, but seemed to be functioning fine. It just clashes with the older hotel section. Staff were also face friendly so that's a huge plus for me. Will definitely be back! read more

We were with a large group that had reserved a room for lunch. We sat down at the end with two seats and were denied service because the waitress (who ignored us when we sat down at the end) came over to kick us out of our seats because she said they had a reservation for two for that particular table when there were tons of empty seats in the other part of the restaurant. I highly doubt that reservation was specifically for those two seats when there was seating elsewhere and we were sitting with our group that reserved the room. We left and will never come back. RUDE!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

Called in for an order, they let me know the kitchen was open and still serving. I ordered a club sandwich with fries. Received the club in a box, was told have a good night I go to leave and realize I have no fries. I walked back in and asked about the fries and they stated sorry the kitchen is closed so can't give fries, so for principal they were hoping I would walk out and not say anything which is trashy in my eyes. The girl looked at me like she had zero moving parts in the brain. So I left the sandwich on the counter and said keep it, 20$ for fries and a 2$ club isn't Jack anyways. lame service and lame attitude there. typical Texas read more

Y'all not even kidding, just had my first experience of real co-Ed restrooms in this "family restaurant"! I haven't been here in years, it has been remodeled and I'm just like WTH! My 15 year old daughter came running back to our table, mom an old guy was at the sink smiling at me! All stalls in one big bathroom area! Went in for lunch and had my server, Kolby, surprise me with what I ate. Kolby chose the seared tuna. Oh my goodness, it was Fantastic!! I would have never chosen it and it I would have really missed out on a savory meal. The tuna was refreshingly light and mild in flavor while the seasonings they used were the real star! I highly recommend the seared tuna, and getting Kolby to be your server!!! read more

Iconic stop for anyone in the Spring/Woodlands area. Good food, good drinks, and good people. This restaurant is a solid 4 out of 5 in every category. Pretty hefty pricing compared to other restaurants in the area, but worth a trip if you're in the area. Great selection of local craft beers and drink. 8/10 do recommend. read more

There's not too many places where you can get quality service, food, & a vibe. This place literally has it all! We came here after getting recommendations from co workers since we are new to the spring area. When we came in, we were greeted by a group of super friendly hostesses. We were given the option to sit anywhere (this was on a Friday after work) so we chose the rooftop area. It wasn't too busy. The decor & vibe was historic yet modern & the music selection & volume level was just right. The entire restaurant was also super clean & neat which I personally appreciate. We ordered A LOT of food & everything was good. Our favorites were the chicken fried chicken & squash casserole. We also loved the trio side option since I enjoy having several sides as opposed to one big main dish. The bartender also made me a specialty tequila cocktail since I didn't care for the vodka that it came with. Our waitress was attentive & answered all my questions. I would definitely come back again. This is the perfect place for large groups, a family night out, or even a cute date night. 10/10! read more

Haven't been to Wunsche Bros. in decades. My husband and I were so glad we did. Their vibe is classy, casual, and clean. I love their open kitchen, cool bar area, and the food was delish. Our waitress, Jackie, was attentive and told us about the days for live entertainment, and the special upstairs area as well. I ordered the loaded baked potato soup. It was perfect, and the best I've ever enjoyed. My husband ordered a side salad, chicken fried steak, and mashed potatoes. I helped him finish the steak, because it was large, tender, and tasty. My Oh My!! I wish Wunsche Bros. the best, and I hope the good word gets out. read more

I've been coming to Wunsche Bros. for as long as I can remember. I don't live here, I visit from AZ to see my Mom in Spring. I've seen this restaurant evolve. Had the sauerkraut sausage balls and Stesti lager. Never disappoints. Jackie the bartender took care of me, you can tell she enjoys working here. I'll continue my allegiance. read more

Revisited this restaurant after reopened. The building was restored to pretty similar to the original building before the fire. Food was great. We ordered blue cheese mushroom burger, chicken tenders and whisky cake. Overall food and services were great ! I liked their burger bun. It has little sweet taste to it. They also make homemade fries. I also took their famous beer bread to go. It is a must try. read more

The food was okay, but the drinks were definitely disappointing. Ordered a mimosa and got what look and tasted like just a glass of OJ. Any amount of champagne in there was flat, which should have been where I learned, but I next asked for a mimosa with just a little orange juice. I got back a small glass of that and champagne was definitely completely flat. Really not good. We got the poblano peppers which were okay but did lack flavor. Appetizer was the sampler and also would not recommend that for the price. read more

Ordered 2 of the sandwiches in the menu, one with pork and other with beef. Again it's was Ok. Recently my husband and I purposely avoided the lunch crowd and got there a little after 1:30 PM. We ordered 1/2 loaf of beer bread and onion rings as an appetizer. We kept waiting and waiting on the bread. It's never a good sign about your waitress when someone else not only brings your appetizer out, but also your entrée. Katelynn was busy talking to another table. When we ordered, I had asked her for regular butter instead of honey butter. Of course we got the wrong butter. Katelynn finally came to the table. I told her about the batter. She went to get regular butter and brought out a small plastic cup with a scoop of rock hard cold butter. I couldn't even spread it on the bread. The onion rings were good, but not as many as I thought we would get for the price. Of course five minutes later here comes our entrées. Our burgers were good. Nothing special. I thought they would be a little more chargrilled tasting. They definitely need to get some ripe tomatoes. I'm glad I went because I haven't seen it since the renovation. Very nice on the inside. Yesterday I went to Wunsche Brothers restaurant in Old Town Spring and the food and the service both were terrible. I sent my food back and it came out just as bad. When I arrived home I went on to their web site and wrote the following to them, "The food tonight was terrible. There was more grease on the food than in the fryer. I will not return or recommend this place to anyone!". I later received a email from a man named Nathan Laviage that read "Kiss my ass don't threaten me bitch". I called up there this morning and found out this is the owner. This needs to be brought to the knowledge of the public for Spring Tx. i will be contacting a news station as well. I went for lunch this past Monday. I ordered the Monday Special "Meatloaf" OMG it was good and moist. For one of my sides I got the Okra, Yes Please. It was perfect. I have been to this Cafe maybe 3 times in the last 2 years, and it never disappoints . My only negative I have to say is the parking. Zero customer service or the brains to understand what it is like to run a restaurant. I was on a first date that night and after the amazing service from Chris we asked to check out and she came out of nowhere with a horrible attitude.. made things very awkward when we were simply asking for the bill. She was extremely rude and disrespectful to our kind waiter Chris and made us believe he was treated unfairly and illegally within his rights as an employee. I believe in fair working environments and WILL NOT come back here or recommend this restaurant to anyone considering the unprofessionalism and bullying we experience here di to our waiter Chris. The name on the bill is Eddie Ramirez. To see a good hard worker treated with disrespect is appalling to me. We believe in treating workers and the working environment with fairness and respect and this did not happen... the management (blonde manager) made things extremely uncomfortable and weird on my date night to have me and my date question the integrity of this business.. Please practice better management before you get another bad review from lack of professionalism and low quality experience from here based on management interference on bullying an innocent waiter on a good date night.... So disappointed.

I asked our waiter if the charred steak mushroom "bow" was a steak because it said flat iron stead. He said yes and I said medium rare then. Well it's not steak in the traditional sense and it's not "bow". I thought it was bow like a bow tie. But now I think it's just a typo. The cubed Steak was well done. Not medium rare. And honestly I didn't see a single mushroom in my dish. Cake jar is lemon flavor. It was ok. Nothing special though. All in all I'd just go for the atmosphere. Or maybe after playing a round of golf and being tired and hungry, I'd be much more impressed.

I visited here when I didn't know what to eat for dinner. This is a sports bar with a pretty large…read morefood menu and they even have daily specials. It is non-smoking, thankfully. They serve everything from apps, to soups (5 different kinds), salads, sandwiches, burgers and even larger entrees. If you want to splurge, they have 2 steaks that are around $28-30. They even make their own homemade potato chips. Some interesting dishes which you don't usually see at sports bars include: shrimp & crab fondue, jaegerschnitzle/spaetzle, and red fish fritters I originally came in for the burger, which is make your own, but after seeing they have a wing special on Mondays, I picked the wings. They're 10 bone in (or boneless) for only $10 and choose 2 sauces. I picked lemon pepper and mango habanero from among their 9 different sauces. I also added a beer on tap. They have 20 on tap currently. Wings - these were really good and meaty. You can tell they are fresh and likely even cut up back in the kitchen as they were various sizes and some were not cut quite properly. My fav was probably the mango habanero. It wasn't nearly as spicy as Wingstop, but nearly similar flavor. The lemon pepper are pretty good, just not quite as great. Service was pretty good as I was checked on several times by the bartender. Overall, this is a pretty good place to grab a casual meal, or watch some sports with your buddies.
